  • "When It's Over" was written by Jill Gibson with Don and Horace Altfeld. Jan & Dean recorded the song for their 1964 album, The Little Old Lady From Pasadena. "When It's Over" was also the B-side of the single, "Sidewalk Surfin'".

Jan Berry was a "Genius" as well! Not just Brian Wilson. Jan & Jill wrote some beautiful music! Jan Berry was so clever with his studio talent & WRITING, HE HAD A VERY UNIQUE CHARISMA AND HE WAS A "CHEICK MAGNET" I just wish Jan & Jill Gibson would have stayed together and marry each other!

The girl in the photo with the surfboard is Linda Gaye Scott. She was a friend Jan (they lived close to each other) and he got her to pose for this photo. She also appeared on the cover of one of their Liberty Records albums. Linda later appeared on several 60's tv shows including Batman

I always thought this Jan Berry tune (I don't think Dean is on it nor cared for it much) was incredibly sophisticated and had a "Pet Sounds" feel to it even though it was recorded two full years before it. Incredible symphonic orchestration punctuated by a very wistful oboe. The lyrics are very relatable. Thanks for posting, Bob.

Yes, it is reminiscent of Pet Sounds. It also would've fit perfectly on Side 2 of The Beach Boys Today. Of course, Jan Berry and Brian Wilson worked together and both worked extensively with The Wrecking Crew. Jan Berry was ahead of his time and never got the credit he deserved.

***** You are right about the second side of "Beach Boys Today." Songs as "Please Let Me Wonder," "Kiss Me, Baby" and "She Knows Me Too Well" have been very underrated by Beach Boys catalog standards. It is a disgrace that Jan & Dean's exclusion from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame doesn't generate any buzz.

I think Jan was ahead of Brian as a producer in 1964, and this song is evidence of that. Listen to their albums from that year, and notice how many of their songs included sound effects.

Jan Berry had a son while he as a teenager; the child (Steve) was adopted and raised by Jan's parents. The photo we are discussing was taken from the Carnival Of Sound sessions in 1967, after the accident. Jan had three brothers and three sisters. I don't know if the young man in the photo is Jan's brother. Jan's brother, Ken, posed with Dean for the photo used for the Save For A Rainy Day album cover.

I've read comments that called Jan a loser because he had a son and his parents raised him. Maybe Jan wasn't perfect, but doesn't make him a loser. It was generous of his parents to raise the child as one of their own, having a large family to begin with.

If only most of their songs were recorded this well-AND had escaped all of that horrible compression that killed their dynamics and/or distorted the sound. This lovely track sounds like real music.
