  • With over 90% of seafood consumed in the US originating from overseas, we currently face a significant and growing seafood trade deficit-$16.8B in 2018. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) continues to be a key product in the global seafood industry, and its consumption in the US has increased 7-8% annually to a current level of 493K tons/year. About 96% of this amount, a record of 473K tons in 2018, is imported, contributing over 20% ($3.4B) to the $16.8B US seafood trade deficit. Given the magnitude of these US supply and trade deficits, there is an urgent need and opportunity to promote domestic Atlantic salmon aquaculture development. This video explains how recirculating aquaculture systems or RAS are providing a means to raise salmon on land while showcasing additional benefits in regards to water reusage, waste management, biosecurity and more.
