- Atlantic salmon continues to be a key product in the global seafood industry, and its consumption in the US has increased 7-8% annually to a current level of 493K tons/year. About 96% of this amount, a record of 473K tons in 2018, is imported, contributing over 20% ($3.4B) to the $16.8B US seafood trade deficit. Given the magnitude of these US supply and trade deficits, there is an urgent need and opportunity to promote domestic Atlantic salmon aquaculture development. This video explains how a network of industry, researchers, educators are identifying and overcoming bottlenecks to the sustainable production of salmon in land-based systems, and building capacity of this industry in the United States.
