Just letting yall know… if you are a beginner I HIGHLY recommend getting something with an alt-az mount or dobsonian mount, as an eq mount would be very frustrating and a huge hobby killer.
Are you talking about the Skyscope. I purchased one in 1952 for $30 thru Sky & Telescope magazine. A 3" mirror in a cardboard tube, with 3 iron pipes screwed into a primitive mount, with 60 power and 120 power eyepieces. Cheap, but I could just make out the red spot on Jupiter, the north polar ice cap on Mars, the mountains of the Moon and half of the Messier objects.
@@eugenegrudzien5040 Yeah, must have been ! It still works... i bought a 30 power eyepiece and it was perfect for the moon and some clusters. That was when I was twelve, so 1957. That started me off... in high school my senior year we got a 10" bought by the school, and that was great ! I started grinding my own 6" mirror... still have it, unfinished. Thanks for the reply, good memories...

Just letting yall know… if you are a beginner I HIGHLY recommend getting something with an alt-az mount or dobsonian mount, as an eq mount would be very frustrating and a huge hobby killer. But great video Damon!
Thank you Damon. This video is very accurate in presenting a realistic picture of what these scopes can do. I have a 22 inch reflector. A lot of things affect what you can see and most are usually not considered before buying and using a telescope. as a result many are disappointed and give up the hobby. A good idea is to go to a local star party and sample the views of other telescopes to be better informed. My large scope requires a dark sky to reach it's full potential. This means driving some distance. JUST DO IT! take the time and be prepared to stay up at least half the night. You will never forget the experience.
I was lucky enough to pic up an orion skyquest xt6 for $125 at a yard sale and i also live in a very dark area to view the night sky and i can see the moon very clearly and up close as i got a lenses that can zoom but i am still new to this hobby and having a blast.
Thank you. I was recently gifted a Celestron "FirstScope" telescope (3 inch / 15x and 75x) and found it an incredibly unrewarding experience. Not only did it take ages to locate even the most prominent of objects, but using the 20mm (x15) eyepiece offered no improvement to the naked eye. Mind you, I am now looking as Mrs P at number 47 in a completely different light so not a total blow out..... Will try the binocular route next - difficult to run with a telescope....! 😊😊😊
@emranismail Bought it for $500. Old StarFinder in decent condition. Had to take it on his word the mirror is good. Said it gives sharp views of Jupiter. Missing some spacers between mirror and cell and mirror needs a cleaning, so first light will have to wait. Hoping next weekend.

I can see Saturn's ring with my spotting scope which is $60 new. 25-75X 70, maybe even better than the binoculars? But I'm wondering about what my next upgrade should be.
It's hard to buy used scope as a beginner... I would love to see a video on how to properly evaluate a mirror, optic or? When we are at the seller's house on the daylight.
This. I’ve been using cheap binoculars to take pics of the moon and want to upgrade to a telescope but don’t know if I should buy used because what if it’s broken or dirty?
@@rorschach723 The best move you can do is find your local astronomy club. They will give you a lot of free and excellent advices and probably tell you where to search.
I have an old Russian TAL 4" telescope, and a Celestron Skywatcher 150mm. To be honest, the TAL just has the edge, but I agree that a decent pair of binoculars are a good starting point. The equatorial mounts can be a pain for a novice to set up.
Any recommendations for a telescope you can view all the planets with? I'd love to see Neptune as a little more than a very small dot and be able to see Jupiter and it's moons in great detail.. my budget for this is 200-600 dollars, over that is way too expensive. Also at 07:15 is that what you see with your eyes?! if so, that's awesome! or does it look more like 07:11 ?
Should be super early in the morning which means your window for observation will be very short. Yeah, binoculars would be your best bet. All the best!😁
I’ve bought 3 different binoculars. All three were miss aligned right out of the box. Two were celestron. One was Barska. 25 X 70 you have to either use a tripod or brace your elbows on the car or wall. Since they are misaligned, I just look through one side like a telescope.
@ Not sure that’s correct. I believe you have to adjust something inside. You peal back a covering and there are tiny screws. But I gave up. Not talking about focusing.
You should try the sky watcher heritage 90 (the Maksutov) i bought it and i had a very pleasant surprise , ( it s a little more in the £350 range but it s a great telescope vor viewing the planets and the moon, you will get very sharp images( especially of Saturn’s rings
Great advice, I myself use a 200mm Skywatcher Newtonian and 2x 102mm refractors for the moon and planets. Always use binoculairs as well, necessary tool to quick scan especially the condition of the sky. I also have the Bresser 127/1200mm refractor but I like the more compact 102mm, almost the same level of details, Skywatcher and Teleskop Service, not bad at all for the pricepoint. Advice from me: never buy expensive equipment if you are watching the night sky on monthly bases, just buy the scope between 300-700 and spend some money on better eyepieces, those things make a major difference. Barlow lenses, mehhh not great fan of them, takes away the crisp clearness of the image when watching visualy. Clear skyes everyone! ⭐⭐⭐

The larger telescopes of Meade's Infinity (90mm and 102mm) series are good too, they're both refractors so they're more crisp than potentially a 114 reflector
