As I’ve already got a Fuji XT1 and T2 adaptor ring, that gives me a way into AP if I want to in the future. I can’t wait to get started! I should say, your chart would have confirmed my choice anyway at about 15:20. Great video!
@@LearnToStargazeIndeed and you recommend a good choice too with the same essential components as I chose with the skywatcher apo EDs, because they are synta assembled with ED glass just like the vixens, or so I’m led to believe. John, a fantastic video! Next time anyone asks me for a scope recommendation, I'm pointing them to this video. I picked up an AD8 dob for $599, it's a great value. The S50 is a game changer if you ask me. It's like the Sony Walkman of telescopes.
Great video as usual. I have few telescopes. TS-Optics 102ED, Bresser Messier 152 Mak. Celestron DX5(my travel buddy). I always recommend Celestron Starsense DX5. It's relatively cheap, lightweight and extremely good travel telescope, also for beginner it's easy to use and you don't have to know anything about the night sky to used it efficiently. Dobs are good, but if you are a bigger person or have some challenges moving, horrible choice. Computer mounts can be good, but they also can have problems.
Thank you for this excellent informative video! I've been in the hobby for 10+ years and I've always been at a loss to answer question like which telescope to get for beginners, why the one i'm recommending is so expensive, and most of all.....why is every retailer out to get us with these inflated prices for those long skinny tubes with just glass in them 😀 Now I can show them your video or give them talking points from you!

My 8y daughter got a very cheap telescope as a gift recently and was very disappointed as you only can use it as a binocular more or less. I would love to do some astrophotography, but as it's hard to combine that into one telescope i think i will get a seestar s50 (or dwarf 3) and a celestron starsense explorer Dob 8 or 10. Your video basically confirmed that this would be a good idea, so thanks!
So for SVBONY, I have their diag mirror and the set of gold line eyepieces 20, 15, 9, 6 mm which for cheap provide me with everything I need for my cheap 90mm bresser refractor. Of course, much better than the garbage that comes with the telescope. I'm getting a Celestron Nexstar Evolution 6 this year for Christmas, and let me tell you, I'm pretty excited! I haven't had a decent telescope upgrade since I got the Meade ETX 60AT (which still works somehow) back in 2009. Quite the upgrade, wouldn't you say?
Hello John! I'm a teenager looking forward to buy my first telescope with a budget around $400. So, is the Skywatcher Virtuoso GTi 150P a good choice? 15:07 and does it come with a tripod type thing to put it on or do i have to buy it seperately? Also does it have like an appy which I can connect it to? Yeah, I know I can read the info from the web but it is always better to ask someone who is experienced and great like you since I have confusions. I was also thinking about buying the one u told next, Sky watcher Startravel 102 AZ3, does it come with an app? Thanks a lot for the help! Amazing video! Love you! :)
The Virtuoso uses an app. The app is not great though, if you can find objects without an app that is ideal. It’s a table top. No tripod required. The Startravel is a regular telescope, no electronics.
Thank you so much for the chart. It really helped out. I do need a little more guidance. I am in a city and I already have a decent camera and lenses. I want to take photos of planets and stars/nebulas. What do you recommend? Do I go more with a telescope or more down the refractor.
That would be a large SCT with a light pollution filter. If you want a hyper star to image at F2, and you have your own DSLR camera, the smallest telescope that can manage this is the 9.25 inch version. You could start with a package like this: usa.all-startelescope.com/products/celestron-cgem-ii-925-edgehd-12018
Before I begin, it's too late to change this plan if it isn't that good. Anyways, we just ordered the AstroMaster 114EQ Newtonian Telescope Reflector Telescope for Beginners and I want to know what I can view when I receive it. I do live in a pretty light polluted area and far from any clear one in a Bortle level 5. I plan to see all the main planets like Mars, Jupiter Saturn, and Venus, and not a planet, but the moon. I also would like to be able to see the brightest stars and clusters that can be seen with the naked eye on a moonless night, even in a light polluted area like the Pleiades, Capella, Polaris, etc. The one I am least hopeful about, but I would like to see if at all possible is Andromeda. Just Andromeda. Any other DSO would almost 100% be in the wrong appeture-magnification ratio. Andromeda, too, but due to being so bright, less so. We are on a very tight budget and can't afford any accessories or add ons >$50 within the next year or so. Is there anything I can do and what can I expect?
I did use a few svbony scopes along the way. I had some issues with the optics on one of the telescopes I bought from them. The support was very prompt and a replacement was sent.
Thank you for this video, it is the help I needed. I was wondering about your thoughts on the Starsense explorer DX 130m You mention the DX 102 but for 10 dollars more, you can get the DX 130. Is the 102 still better in your opinion?
Our planitarium people recommend Explore FirstLight 114mm Newtonian Telescope with Twilight Nano Mount - FL-N114500TN-what do you think of this one for a teen who wants to see deep space, and planets-and also possibly locate the items from his phone first and point??
For what it’s worth, I have an SVBONY laser collimator that arrived perfectly collimated itself (I’d heard rumours this could be an issue). And I mean, it’s one of their cheaper offerings, but it seems to be perfectly decent quality, and made me curious about what else they offer.
Hi mate I am from australia “I’m planning to buy a telescope and am deciding between the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT114 AZ Newtonian Telescope and the LT80 AZ Refractor Telescope. Which one would you recommend in terms of ease of use and maintenance? I’m particularly interested in viewing planets like Saturn and Jupiter. Any advice pls?
Hi. I saw a video where you reviewed the “Explore Scientific FirstLight 114mm Newtonian Telescope with EQ3 Mount (White)”. I currently have it in my cart on Amazon. I was interested in getting it for my husband and teens to view the night sky… moon and hopefully planets. No plans for photography. My budget is around $300. Is this a good choice?
That’s not the version I reviewed. I reviewed the one an AZ mount, which is good for small kids. For adults, a nice 102 refractor, ideally the Starsense or StarTravel versions, would be better. Hope this helps!
Has anyone else noticed that UA-cam keeps starting the video past the intro? I keep clicking on a vid for the first time and having to rewind to hear it
I have a svbony 15mm a double barlo lense and a right angle .really nice for the price way better then my orion lenses.i did get my telescope from amazon with 70 bucks off sale.if I would of bought it from the original seller it would of been almost 400 bucks.plus little extra got a 3 year warrenty amazon isnt perfect but I think I got a good deal.
I’ve been really interested in the z100 with a budget of around 150$ it is really hard to find good telescopes I want to see the moon planets and maybe some deep sky objects and also take pictures can the z100 get it done?
I aligned the telescope last night and saw Jupiter for the first time! It was amazing even saw the 4 moons couldn’t see much else due to it being cloudy and also your 50 things to see with a telescope book is amazing

Assuming you have dark skies (Bortle 3 for example), you’ll be able to see all sorts of deep sky objects. I wrote a book on this a while ago. Hopefully the publisher will release it in 2025.
I would personally never ever recommend anyone buy something like the PowerTank, it's just such an awful value compared to non astronomy-branded options out there. On amazon for the same price as that you can get an ~300Wh power station compared to the only ~85Wh of that PowerTank. Or if you like the smaller size, similarly low capacity ~85Wh batteries can be had for well under $100. PowerTank is just a horrendous value proposition with a crazy 'astro-tax' added on top of it

You could start with a package like this: usa.all-startelescope.com/products/celestron-cgem-ii-925-edgehd-12018
Costo has the 102mm on sale this week online. They appeared a few weeks ago and I expect they will disappear soon after Christmas.
Good luck, I’m sure you’ll make the best of it!
Interesting video. 14:10 - For around 100 $ even for DSO I think a 70/700 mm f10 achromat is far better than binoculars.
Post a link to one that you like!
I did use a few svbony scopes along the way. I had some issues with the optics on one of the telescopes I bought from them. The support was very prompt and a replacement was sent.
Good to hear!
Thank you for this video, it is the help I needed. I was wondering about your thoughts on the Starsense explorer DX 130m You mention the DX 102 but for 10 dollars more, you can get the DX 130. Is the 102 still better in your opinion?
The DX130 is nice, but it needs collimation, which confuses beginners, so I don’t tend to recommend it as often.
Thank you. No idea what that even is so I guess it's the 102 for me
I own a Orion Observer 134mm reflector. It's good for deep sky.
Our planitarium people recommend Explore FirstLight 114mm Newtonian Telescope with Twilight Nano Mount - FL-N114500TN-what do you think of this one for a teen who wants to see deep space, and planets-and also possibly locate the items from his phone first and point??
That’s a good scope for little kids.
For what it’s worth, I have an SVBONY laser collimator that arrived perfectly collimated itself (I’d heard rumours this could be an issue). And I mean, it’s one of their cheaper offerings, but it seems to be perfectly decent quality, and made me curious about what else they offer.
Good to know!
Hi mate
I am from australia
“I’m planning to buy a telescope and am deciding between the Celestron StarSense Explorer LT114 AZ Newtonian Telescope and the LT80 AZ Refractor Telescope. Which one would you recommend in terms of ease of use and maintenance? I’m particularly interested in viewing planets like Saturn and Jupiter. Any advice pls?
Honestly, they’re both pretty bad. Have you checked out the DX series? Even the StarSense tabletop would be better.
@ yes i have checked however i want something not so much expensive and easy to naintain n set up
So can you pls guide ne pls
@@ankititpyou might want to try the used market. I’m not going to recommend a telescope that doesn’t function just because the price is low.
@ ok pls let me know any telescope which is expensive too . I am ok too . Incan check used market .
@ ahh , thank you! Glad I asked!
@ thank you for responding
Is that a unistellar smart scope in the background?
You totally need to put oit a review video on it later on
Yup, that’s the next video. Mostly done, but I need a few more clear nights.
@@LearnToStargaze I think the entire scope should be 999 dollars retail
Plssss help me on the telescope on my channel is it good to buy or not
Hu?
@@LearnToStargaze I found a tasco telescope on Amazon and I posted it see if it is good or not
Has anyone else noticed that UA-cam keeps starting the video past the intro? I keep clicking on a vid for the first time and having to rewind to hear it
Strange!
How is it TS teleskop 750/350 efraktor for beginer
Hu?
I wanna buy a Gemini II, could I see planets like Jupiter and Saturn
Yes, that scope can see those planets, Venus and the Moon too!
@LearnToStargaze thanks
I have a svbony 15mm a double barlo lense and a right angle .really nice for the price way better then my orion lenses.i did get my telescope from amazon with 70 bucks off sale.if I would of bought it from the original seller it would of been almost 400 bucks.plus little extra got a 3 year warrenty amazon isnt perfect but I think I got a good deal.
i have a 10 inch dob and i love it remeber me john
I’ve been really interested in the z100 with a budget of around 150$ it is really hard to find good telescopes I want to see the moon planets and maybe some deep sky objects and also take pictures can the z100 get it done?
Did you watch the whole video? I think I described this situation.
Sorry about that I kinda just skipped to the z100 amazing video really helpful
a good one is the aptura ad6
What do you think about the celestron moon mission 114 az sr
I hate it.
Just got one for Christmas but struggling with aligning the telescope to the planets and stars (also got your 50 things to see with a telescope book)
@@Karaii. Be sure to practice during the day!
I aligned the telescope last night and saw Jupiter for the first time! It was amazing even saw the 4 moons couldn’t see much else due to it being cloudy and also your 50 things to see with a telescope book is amazing
@@Karaii.wonderful! Congrats on your success!

Hi, I'm from the Philippines, mind if I ask, if the Celestron Powerseeker 114 eq is a good replacement scope from my old 76mm reflector that I purchased almost 5 years ago for 3000 php ( atleast 50 usd ). I'm planning to purchase it for personal use and academic purposes.
No, see Ed Ting’s review of the Powerseeker 127. This is just a worse version of that scope. Why don’t you look into the New SeeStar if it’s for academic purposes?
@@LearnToStargaze Thanks for your reply, and I have seen Ed Ting's review on the 127 eq powerseeker, that is why I was curious about the Celestron powerseeker 114eq, all wondering if it would be the same thing ( and sadly, it is ).
So i want a telescope to ONLY see planets in detail and NOT take photos.I also want to find planets EASILY.With a price range of 300-400$.What should i get...and i dont care if its SUPER long or SUPER wide.
A Mak on an AZ mount.
@LearnToStargaze ok thanks
U mention eye piece cameras at 13:18 .. do they have live view through ur phone or takes pics then sends to phone .. I’m looking for a live view attachment that connects to my phone
Yes, if you get an ASIair Mini, that will send the image from the camera to your phone. I did this with Jupiter in my Starsense DX5 video.
I found this feature a big sell for me. I'm going to buy it. Now, so much options for the telescopes that I don't know where to go.😅
$30 celestron 7x50 bino + $15 star map = good starter combo
Assuming you have dark skies (Bortle 3 for example), you’ll be able to see all sorts of deep sky objects. I wrote a book on this a while ago. Hopefully the publisher will release it in 2025.
perfect video
Thanks!
cool
I would personally never ever recommend anyone buy something like the PowerTank, it's just such an awful value compared to non astronomy-branded options out there. On amazon for the same price as that you can get an ~300Wh power station compared to the only ~85Wh of that PowerTank. Or if you like the smaller size, similarly low capacity ~85Wh batteries can be had for well under $100. PowerTank is just a horrendous value proposition with a crazy 'astro-tax' added on top of it
i have no budget but i like space and want to do astrophotography
Well I think I found the telescope for you the James web telescope which is around 10B and you’ll get the best pics available👍
@CalebCabush thanks I think I might sell myself 10B time so that I can get it 🤣🤣👍👍
Get a job. You arent special.
I want to take pictures like Hubble, but my budget is only $50.
You could totally take photos as good as Hubble’s first image (before the lens was fixed).
If u can recommend any telescope for kids ….. they are 6 and 12 yrs old.
That’s what this video was about.
Hoping seestar s100
Me too!
Please zwo degraded with the s30.. Imo
