I have lived in Edinburgh all my life ( I am 77 )and you have taught me so much cheers Tony x
Five months into living in Edinburgh, and I just discovered your channel. Absolutely love it! Hope I get to bump into you someday
At the western end of Kings Stables Road Lane there was a stable that housed Giinger the horse that pulled the fruit and veg cart up to Infirmary Street to sell its wares. Also in the stable was the wee pony called Smokey who pulled Mary Dunlops barrel organ round central Edinburgh to be cawed for pennies. This was when I was a boy in the late fifties.
Before the car park was built there was what was called the " wee gardens" where you could walk through these gardens which were lovely cross Kings Stables Road and into princes street gardens then they dug the gardens up and replaced it with the car park
I used to go to the Jaffacake every Thursday, it changed to Gaia after that and I became assistant manager!
I used to rent a room in a shared flat on King's Stables Rd around 1990. Cost all of £90 a month. Opened my curtains in the morning and there was the castle.
Love the history videos, Tony. Thanks for sharing.
I don't remember that club name but sounds like it would be what was known as Nicos in the early to mid 80s.
A favourite haunt of a certain green teams casuals back then. A friend an I man handled out for dressing a certain way.
I used to work the doors In the Grass Market in my early years. Definitely one of my favourite spots in Edinburgh to this day
😃😃😃😃😃😃😃🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Love from Inger and SWEDEN
Great history bits!! And yes - bring back jousting! lol
Your videos are really Awesome
Walked along here for the first time last weekend after our first time walking along Victoria St and The Grassmarket! As always, love the history behind it!
Good stuff Tony. I've walked along that road loads of times without knowing its history. That hotel looks pretty smart too so I might try that one sometime 👍
Another great video 👍
Later the stables had milk horses in them too:)
Oh wow!
We always look forward to your educational walking videos. You explain things, and reveal little facts that nobody else is doing.
Be prepared to be accosted by two crazy Aussies if you're on the streets in October 😉
I’ve walked this road many a time, Tony, but who knew that this unassuming street (as it is now) had such a rich history attached to it?! I mean jousting?! Can you imagine! That must’ve been a sight to see! Would love to see a re-enactment! Thanks for sharing! 👍🏼😊🏴
There used to be an old steamie down there. If you can't find it, it'll be under the new flats.
So glad to have found your channel! I'll be visiting Edinburgh for the first time this autumn. I'm binge-watching your videos 😃!
Hi Tony. In the New Town, do you know if the blocked off windows are becuase of the window tax? Or were they just designed like that?
I'm with Tony. Bring back the joust!
As you passed by I saw the KSC and thought "Kings Stable Close" but you didn't go back to it, so I was just thinking OK, he'll talk about it in another video. I'm glad you went back. I like the idea of holding a joust, but too many people go too far on those reenactments, so it would need to be vetted of course. I would love to see it.
Love the history, especially when you throw in some movie trivia too! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is my favorite channel. ...
Thank you Tony! I love your history lessons! :) A Knight's Tale is my favorite movie, and how cool would that be for there to be jousting in Edinburgh?!!!! Yes!
Maybe one day!
Haven't been down Kings Stables Road for decades, back in the 70's and 80's it wasn't a pleasent place to be... actually back then neither was most of the Grassmarket lol
That said, Tony if you read this, a now and then picture comparison looking back over the centuries at King Stable Road would likely make a fascinating video for you to do... even looking at streetview in 2010 shows a lot more of the old lanes and buildings than is there now.... sadly still has that monstrous car park in it but i've always wondered what it looked like before that was built... could be wrong but wasn't the car park only built when the old Caley train station was closed down?
Very cool history facts. Love it. Thank you.
The way that Burke & Hare rendered their stock unalive has always disturbed me because of the very hands on way they did it. A means of manual suffocation so as not to leave a mark on the body to please the anatomist.
Ah yes, burking. Not nice at all.
Interesting. Every square inch of the earth has its own history, often changing with each succeeding generation
Hello Tony ✌❤
Great video. Do you know what the origin or purpose of the needle/columns are near the bridge? Stone pillars
That's a very good question! I must have been down that road a thousand times in my lifetime and i never even noticed they were there, 2 on either side of the bridge at both ends (4 in total).... it's amazing how much you miss when you get used to living and working in a City and not looking at what's around you... i really want to know why they are there now as well 😀
Walked thar Road countless times. Worked in Cleansing department
edinburgh festival is in august
Maybe Vespa-jousting...
The poor servants sent all the way down on foot to fetch horses! Maybe they waved a flag? "Page! Fly the horse flag! The King rides today!"
