@ 2:30, that was the original placement of the Mercat Cross that was moved just a few meters away to make way for modern traffic. I agree with the notion of a pub called "The Thieve's Hoose"! :p
I'm reading the novel Lantern for the Dark by Hugh C. Rae under the name of Jessica Stirling. The main character is arrested in 1787 and served time in the famous Tolbooth prison. I thought I would see what I could find on UA-cam and found you doing a walk at the old site with your sweet little dog. I enjoyed listening. Thank you.
I just love your touring Edinburgh videos. You’ve got to do more. I love them!!!!! Very interesting. I hope the next time i visit i run into you doing a video. I’m ex pat from Scone, Perth living in Canada. I’ve e’d you before. I just enjoy your knowledge based vids and walks around a city that I loved visiting and hope to come back to again. Thanks, Tony
LOVE your videos Tony,I stay in West Pilton so some of your posts are local to me.I LOVE your voice, and Merlin, If a toothless old lady suddenly screams at you from across the road "I LOVE YOU TONY" don't panic,it'll be me n I cannae run lol
I really love these walking videos with Merlin. He brings such a joy. It is so nice to see you out and about again. I love your city and these videos just make me more anxious to move there.
Always a pleasure to be on one of your walk-abouts...and the Royal Mile never disappoints! 😉 Thank you for the historical tour - hello to the women of the house - love from Denmark 🌸💕
Look up, look down, look all around. Should be easier to do if not as many people walking about. Hope to do later 2021. Another fantastic video, thank you 😊
Another great walk with great interesting info! I love Marilyn he’s got the sweetest face 😆 and yes in deed he loves his ball!!! Thank you!! Kathy Washington State
@@treelimbtlc Hello Tami Thank you for saying hello! It’s a small world! We are both in Washington State!!! Yes I love these videos!! He does a great job!!! Take care
Thank you Tony -- and Merlin -- for the tour and the history lesson. Fascinating to think how Edinburgh's historical landscape influenced the contemporary city we know today. Always enjoy your weekly videos!
On our last trip in Edinburgh a few years ago we passed the heart and I spat on the heart and a bunch of people gave me the dirtiest look. I tried to explain the story behind it. They weren’t having it. Oh well. You win some and you lose some.
As a Fifer even i know about the spitting on the Heart of Midlothian. Wondering if the unusual cross you mentioned on the east side of St Giles is the site of the original toll cross. It's the pulpit like structure that always fascinates me on that side of the building. Also the recent addition of a Kirkcaldy born individual, Adam Smith, who was educated at Edinburgh University! That whole area is absolutely fascinating.
thks for another great video.i live in Edinburgh i love your channel.Merlin is a very cute doggy great name also.hows Neville doing hope hes feeling better sending fluffy hugs to Neville xx
Absolutely loving your videos! So glad I found this channel. Such an incredibly beautiful place. My ultimate dream vacation! Thanks for posting these and sharing your knowledge!!
I think you just gave away the reason it's called Tollbooth Prison, you said it was also where the bells rang to start the market. Maybe there was a booth to house the bells there. And then think "for whom the bells toll" --- toll means ring. It's a thought anyways. Love your videos
I've never been to Scotland but I'd love to visit Edinburgh and the highlands. It seems so beautiful! I enjoy watching these vlogs a lot! It's quite cold there isn't it? That is the only thing holding me back from going there for a few months haha! The architecture is so beautiful there! I hope I can visit Scotland soon, well, where all this craziness in the world is over. Very interesting and informative vlog. The only thing I would suggest is to try to get a wider lens for your camera so that we could see all your surroundings better while you talk and explain :) well the camera I vlog with is not as wide as I would prefer so I'm about to get a wider lens, I think it would make a great difference!
Thank you so much. I agree with your tip for the camera. My camera does not have a changeable lens , and at present out of my budget. But hopefully one day. And yes. It’s cold right now. But that’s normal most of the time here.
I remember hearing as a child that spitting on the Heart of Midlothian would bring good luck. Often wondered how such a myth came to be. Now I know, thanksTony and Merlin.

Very interesting Tony. I'll keep an eye out for that when we are in Edinburgh later this year 👍
Such an interesting video Tony. I always look forward to your video's. Thanks for sharing! :)
I’m sure I stayed in a hostel near there that said it was an old jail/courthouse
My chihuahua Britain told me to ask after Neville. We hope he's doing better since his seizure.
I’ve got an old picture of the Tollbooth Prison with the platform that I printed from the web. Google it and you should find it. 😊
Thanks for sending me it.
"Look up AND look down he says. Next it'll be "Look around, too." Sure, & you'll be giving us whiplash for a souvenir!
Just trying to help. 😀
@@ClanBroonford Sorry, I was just joking! 😛
Is there a connection between the old prison and the Tolbooth Tavern..?
Not as far as I know. It was named the tollbooth prison as it was a tollbooth first. Not sure what the toll was for though.
The heart of mid lothian
Love Merlin! Not a better guide partner to be found
Next time I'm in Edinburgh let's meet at Thifs Hoose for a pint 😂
Tom Farmer : Quick Fit tyre founder.
Oh your dog Merlin has to meet my cat Merlin ;D
That’s probably not a good idea. Lol
@The Broonfords HAHA 😅😻🐶

2 great gramps did their time there. Mentioned in the King's Privy Council(Henry VIII) as outlaws and troublemakers.
That's very cool.
Merlin is cute :)
And he knows it.
Hello humans and others
Merlin says hi.
