  • Following the mini-controversy that Bud Light stirred up during the 2019 Super Bowl, we bring in a beer expert to discuss what Corn Syrup does in beer. Ken Konarzewksi Jr is the Host of Better on Draft. We talked a little chemistry, discussed the commercial and mused if it changes our thoughts on their products.

    Good video as always.
    This marketing trick reminds me of when Dan Akroyd goes on shows and says "some vodkas use glycol which is antifreeze" even though the glycol used in vodkas aren't even close to the same glycol used in antifreeze.
    How's that polar vortex in your part of the state going? Battle Creek (my city) got absolutely leveled with snow and schools were closed for the whole week.

    Corn syrup is not a big deal in American lagers. It helps to achieve the gravity of the final product. My only argument is why do people pay premium prices for light beer". $6.58 for sparge water.

    Interesting information, for those of us with corn sensitivities, Bud is one of the few mass produced "mower" beers we can drink.

      Something I never considered. Great point. How do you go about finding what beers contain corn? Is there a good website on that or do you have to research each beer specifically?

    • @DrCPriest
      @DrCPriest 5 років тому

      Not really too many informative websites out there listing ingredients, you have to go to each brewer's site and look for ingredients - and sometimes read between the lines (look for corn derivatives, dextrose, maltodextrin, caramel color, etc.). Food Babe (foodbabe.com/the-shocking-ingredients-in-beer/ & foodbabe.com/not-so-fast-beer-companies-why-arent-you-disclosing-these-additives/ & foodbabe.com/why-ingredients-in-beer-matter-and-what-beer-companies-arent-telling-you/) does a lot of research, as do a few other sites. Craft beer ales and IPAs are usually safe, as is German beer that follows traditional brewing laws (Reinheitsgebot).

    • @NickDrinks

      @@nicoko_ah Good question and actually related to this video. I could do a full video on all sorts of beer science. That one is based on the yeast. When they eat the sugar (which could be corn syrup) they release alcohol and CO2 (aka fizz). Most of that CO2 escapes during fermentation but you can trap it in there for natural carbonation. These tend to be lower fizz beers. Many beers force carbonate by adding external CO2. Great question. Thanks!!

    So do companies use high fructose corn syrup beer? It sounds like there is no place for it in that drink

      This was the first time I did research on any corn syrup products in beers. I don't believe so and Ken sounded like he shared that opinion. I'll do some research.

      @@NickDrinks Not saying you should keep it strictly educational, but if you are looking for a mini-series that covers informative topics about modern beverage consumption and marketing, I think I would have fun watching that. At the very least, it'd be useful. "What's the difference between Guinness and regular beer?" or something like that.

    A nearly 4 minute video with only a couple of sentences devoted to answering the question posed in the video's title? That's weaker than Miller Lite. You could have at least compared and contrasted the different types of sugars that are used in the brewing process. Touched on how the different types of sugars affect taste or alcohol content.

      Thanks for the feedback. We did a quick turn on this to get it up right after the Super Bowl but I'll take to heart for next one. Who does a good job out there I can emulate?

    • @georgethornburg9259
      @georgethornburg9259 4 роки тому

      I would have focused on how yeast turns sugars into alcohol. Most brewers use a corn mash / barely mixture. This is just cutting down on the process of worting the corn down to... Pretty much corn syrup. Horrible add especially for a brewer that brags on using rice. If you're drinking light beer, you're not really in the position of judging beer, or the beer ingredients. Stay on the porch.
