Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this UA-cam channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
"Market" in Turkish means supermarket. The farmers type of local markets are called "Pazar" (English word Bazaar). As you guessed it the locals were directing you to supermarkets. In any case, sometimes getting lost is the best way to travel.

Yay! So glad you enjoyed Istanbul. I lived in Turkey for a year a while ago and missed some of the sights and sounds. This vlog made my nostalgic for the kindness of Turkish people.... and, of course, the food!
In Istanbul ramadan changes nothing. Everything stays same. Restaurants are little less crowded during the day and at sunset might be packed. But otherwise life goes normally

I almost started crying watching your video. I studied for a couple of months in Istanbul. It was the best time of my life. Great city, great people.
I've had the pleasure of trying Kokorec, too. And it was quite good: Crunchy bits und juicy/fatty parts of meat.
I'd claim that you were quite lucky for not knowing the composition of Kokorec, especially if you usually aren't into eating innards,
because you were able to enjoy it without any nasty thoughts.
One recommendation if you like lamb meat: "Büryan Kebab" are juicy meat pieces that are cut from a roasted half lamb that has been cooked in an underground clay oven. There are some restaurants in Istanbul that specialize in this dish and it's really worth it.

Risk of an overdose of turquoise
With a coastline that spans more than 8,000 kilometers (approximately 5,000 miles), there is an increased risk of ending up at the beach. And those beaches are pristine! And the water is blue. Or worse…, turquoise. Turkey has beaches in all colors of blue. Colors that seem to change every day, depending on the weather, but always blue. So, if you’re not a big fan of blue - and in particular turquoise - stay away from Turkish beaches. You will be annoyed with the crystal clear water and the paradise beaches. In fact, there are so many beaches, that you will be spoiled for choice. Another risk here…, the stress of decision making! You can’t possibly try them all.
Risk of being immersed in history and culture
Turkey is not all about turquoise beaches and pristine bays. The country has a rich history and plenty of ancient sites to show for that. There are ‘ancient stones’ everywhere. Of course, a city like Istanbul is a cultural hub. And sites like Ephesus, Pamukkale, Mount Nemrut or Troy are world famous. The country has 16 sites inscribed on the World Heritage List! But you don’t have to visit those sites to be surrounded by history. It is simply everywhere. The smallest villages have ancient Lycian graves, rock tombs or remains of entire cities or civilizations. You will always be surprised at the amount of history that is just waiting for you to discover it. When in fear of having to deal with the beauty of history or culture when on holiday, you might want to reconsider visiting Turkey!
Risk of gaining weight
Beware! Turkish food is delicious! And there is food everywhere. Really… Even when you think you’ve just found the most remote and isolated spot in Turkey, someone will be offering you food or tea. And the problem is, this doesn’t just happen to you once. It happens every day. You will spend an entire trip surrounded by food stalls selling delicious (and healthy) street food. You will have to resist countless seaside restaurants serving fresh fish and meze. You will have to refuse complementary fruit plates after your meal or even when enjoying a drink or cocktail on the beach. Oh, and please DO NOT have a Turkish breakfast! It feels like dying and going to heaven. A traditional Turkish breakfast (köy kahvaltısı) is a feast! It is a table full of food, most of the times organic and it will take hours of whiling away the day enjoying those yummies. In short, the dangers of people serving you the tastiest meals are genuine. If you plan on starving yourself, don’t come to Turkey.
Risk of making Turkish friends (for life)
If you are the “I do not want to meet any local” kind of person, then you’re in trouble when visiting Turkey. Locals LOVE foreigners. They will go out of their way to make you happy. They are so welcoming and hospitable that they would not only feed you or even offer you a bed for the night. They might also be genuinely interested in who you are and what you love about Turkey. You might end up being the guest of honor at a wedding or meet the Muhtar (head of the village) for a cup of tea or Turkish coffee. Another thing…, Turkish people love hitchhikers and even people that are not hitchhiking but seem to have a long road ahead. It is almost part of a tradition. Makes sense, if you own a car and someone doesn’t, why not stop to take them along if you are going the same way? Of even better, why not drive your temporary guests straight to their destination? After all, that’s what being hospitable is all about! Indeed, there is a huge risk in Turkey of bonding with locals and making friends for life. If you feel uncomfortable making new friends, Turkey is not for you.
Risk of too much contentment
With all the good food, the lovely friendly people, beautiful nature, beaches, and bays and an always present aroma of history and culture, you risk feeling content and happy. Not just for a split second, but the entire time. And that is where the real danger of coming to Turkey lies… You may feel so good in Turkey; you never want to leave again. And if you do manage to drag yourself back home, beware, as you may be back sooner than you think! It’s magic!

If you ever go back to Istanbul , take a ferry out to one of the islands in the Sea of Marmara . The most popular one is Buyukada , which means Big Island. What makes these islands so special is there's no motor traffic. You get around by renting a bicycle or riding in a horse carriage. Lots of old quaint houses, and beaches make these islands a nice change from busy Istanbul. The ferry takes about an hour or less to get there.

I’m most likely super late to comment as this video was up a year ago but I just wanted to say a big thank you to Kara and Nate for showing us all the beautiful experiences through Istanbul! Yes it can be stressful finding your way as its soo crowded and a little confusinf when you’re on the streets but everything is absolutely amazing! Quick tip: when you’re on the asai side of Istanbuk the local food or street food is half the price because its not so touristy if that makes sense... Love you both!

[PAUSE LIFE] Burası Kadıköy Burdan Çıkış Yok = This is Kadıköy , there is no exit (escape)...as I am sure you saw all the Yellow/Blue flags everywhere. It is also customary to grab some simit & tea (and some bread to toss over the edge of the ferry to the swooping seagulls).
The weekly markets are called "Pazars"...so for anyone who reads this that wants to find it, you should say "Pazar nerede?" pah-zar neh-reh-deh.

As a Turkish person myself, I love that you enjoyed Istanbul! I live in the US, so I get to go there every summer! The only disappointing thing though is the amount of people that smoke. Also, I recommend going to Ortaköy. It’s pretty much an open market full of jewelry stands. I love it and have gotten most of my jewelry from there!
Yummmm that corn reminds me of the Bulgarian seaside, although they boil them more often, not grill them.
Places like that, we would just walk around and just eat 1 of everything :D Such great food :)

I'm working my way through these, because I was lucky enough to spend 6 months in Izmir 25 years ago. I love the Turkish people the most of all the places we traveled; there's something special about them. It's fun to see it again and reassuring that it doesn't seem to have changed too much.

Had they known what they were about to be served, maybe they would have passed. But now they’re glad they had that meal!
Actually not only intestines, its just the wrap on meat. sweatbreads and fat in side that roll, wrapped with intestines of lamb. It is cooked fast first then slowly. Fast cooking fries all intestines around meat then slowly sweatbread and fat cooked inside. So you don't feel the taste of intestine. If it is not cooked properly, if intestines not fried you will think it tastes like a barn with spices.
As a Muslim once I ate pork by mistake in the new year eve dinner when I was outside of the country. Yuck

İf you gone to asian side you must go to “moda” 15 min walk to the harbour. Ask erasmus students know where the taste of asian side is it. Pubs and 3 generation coffe shops you can find and half of the ppl speak english :) rarely foreign youtubers still find out
