- I've been eyeing this piece of wood for years, waiting for it to dry. I just knew it was going to be beautiful! Maybe if someone else had turned it but, I ruined it! Finished in shellac.

A few comments about my title being "click bait." because it indicates some disaster, I guess. That was not my intention. I mis-judged this piece. I got all caught up in trying to save the bark and utilize as much of the heart wood as I could. I ruined the piece because I didn't take into account the combination of the flat sides and the difference between the length and the width of the piece. I always try not to remove any more wood then I have to but should have approached this piece in a different way. I'm just disgusted with myself.
Remember what Bob Ross always said, there are no mistakes, only Happy Accidents.
I really believe you're being unnecessarily critical of it, Phil. It turned out to be a beautiful piece, with lots of interesting bits to see.
I got what you meant. I figured it was because you didn't want to lose the bark. It was an amazing piece.
@@heathersmith1257 I tell my students that often.
You can't undo once your started removing wood. You made the best of it and it's still a nice piece.
400 views in 30 minutes of posting! There must be a lot of us hanging out for our weekly dose of Phil’s magic. Thanks again Phil for a master-lesson in Woking with the timber.
I know I do.
Thanks, Bob! 😊
Yep every week.
Wood is just like people, we don’t always get what we expect or want. We both have flaws; wood and people have beauty when we look past what we expect to what we have. Love your work.
😊
No. Not ruined. In fact it is lovely. It was a difficult piece, and you nailed it!
😊
I don’t know why you think it’s ruined! I think it’s beautiful! Thanks Phil! See you next week!
Just too thick, Brenda. Poor planning. Thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😊
I think it’s beautiful because you uncovered all of the beautiful parts. Not ruined at all.
😊
A little late to the party, but that really is a beautiful piece with it's own character. Just like our kids. Each is beautiful in their own way.
Thank you! 😊
Hey… I’d be proud to display it on one of my prominent shelves! It’s supposed to be different than all your other ones!
Thanks Phil!
😊
It’s not ruined Mr. Anderson, it’s quite pretty. I love it! ❤
😊
You didn't ruin the piece phil,it was a hard piece to start off with,I think you did your best with it
😊
You certainly didn’t ruin that lovely piece of wood, Phil, it’s lovely. I prefer thin and delicate but my wife prefers chunky. It’s all personal preference 🌞
True enough, Ray, thanks! 😊
Hi Phil, from Ocean Shores. That is NOT an error. That's beautifully done. Had to quit turning, had a stroke. Can't trust myself around machines anymore. Still enjoy your show.
Sorry to hear that but good to know you are still with us! Hang in there, maybe you will be able to get back at it and if you can't, well, you can teach! 😊
We would be proud to display this bowl in our home or office, it's beautiful. As would anybody out there. You still put a little bit of your soul into this fine work of art. As you do with all your work. You turning channel format is one of the best on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing this and all your post with us and all the good folks around the world.🌿 🌍🌎🌏 👍👍👍👍👍
Wow, thank you, Rob! I'm blushing! 😊
It’s definitely not ruined! It’s rustic and beautiful!
😊
Your unloved piece, is someone else’s masterpiece.
If you say so, Margaret, thanks! 😊
Even though it may not be your cup of tea, I think it is lovely. Very natural with all the cracks. I like it.
Thank you! 😊
We are our own worst critics!. Is it any surprise that we say the wood takes us where it needs to go, yet we aren't always pleased with the destination? It's beautiful, Phil. The wood, of course, is really nice, and your treatment of it is as always spot on. Its heavy and won't tip over easy and can be used for self-defense. Job well done!
LOL! Thanks, Steve! 😊
Don’t be so hard on yourself, Phil. You have to go where the wood takes you. Carole and I really liked the end result - it may not have been what you intended to end up with, but sometimes a piece of “treen” with more solidity to it does make sense, and Carole and I both think this was one of those. As I said in one of my other recent comments, I would give that house room in a second. And watching the transformation you guide continues to be a highly effective way for me to relax.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video enough to relax, thank you, Ian! 😊
I know you’ve said it before, you work with what you got. Another masterful teaching session from “Teacher”. Beautiful wood.
Thank you so much, Kid! 😊
I dont see a problem with this pretty bowl. I know you are a perfectionist, Phil but its still a really pretty bowl! Dont criticize yourself, sweetie!
So kind of you, Texana, thank you! 😊
Howdy Phil 👋👋... Far from ruined. It's beautiful. You're still the Picasso of wood turning
😊
Come on Phil - it's unique & has a charm of its own! The wood always has the last word!😀
😊
You didn't ruin it Phil, it's still beautiful. I am a fan of the chainsaw marks.
I love that you love the chainsaw marks too, Heather, thanks! 😊
Some of the enjoyment I receive from watching your video, Phil, comes from your commentary. Your ability to impart a level of familial friendship, added to your turning talent help to make Thursday worth looking ahead to every week. Thank you. Not ruined, different.
It's early Friday morning when I see it over this side if the pond and Phil's chuckle always makes my day. 🤗
Thanks again Phil
Well said!
You are too kind, Hubert, thank you! 😊
Every bowl that you make is "one of a kind" Just like any other ARTIST'S work. So this one came out a bit different. That doesn't mean that you ruined it. Sometimes the substrate has a say in how the project turns out. All the artist has to do is listen and see what the project is telling him. That you always do.
No, you didn't ruin anything, Phil. ;-)
Thanks, Robert! 😊
I was saving my 'what a load of rot' comment for something really punky, but 'Ruined' ? ,,,, what a load of rot. I, and I would hazard a guess at a good proportion of the viewers would be super thrilled to have one of Phil's disasters as a centre table piece. As usual, thanks agan Phil for sharing your skills and experiencesl
You are too kind, Richard, thank you! 😃
Phil… I like it, you took on a challenge and won. Nicely done. Thanks for bringing us along.
😊
I grew up with plum trees, but never saw the gorgeous purple veining of the inside! Your creations remind me of people- we are all unique in our strengths and weaknesses, beautiful in our varied shapes and colors, thicknesses or otherwise. Thank you for sharing your skills with us, helping us to see beauty everywhere.
Ah that's lovely.🙏
Thank you, Susannah! 😊
It's a very lovely bowl! There's nothing wrong with having thicker walls, each piece has its own personality
Pretty dang thick, Carolyn, but thank you! 😊
Don't believe you ruined it Phil. One of a kind, yes but great. Thanks, Dan.
😊
Well you had me going with that title. I hardly look on that piece as any kind of failure. I love that some bowls turn out thick and heavy by virtue of the shape of the piece. I think you, again, brought out the best of this piece. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Bob! 😊
I think you did better than I every have on Plum! Mine all self destructs! I feel bad for the folks who like to watch disasters rather than process. Love what you did with what you had!
Thank you, Anthony! 😃
My grandfather had a wide edge bowl he kept shelled nuts in with holes for the tools. When he passed I kept it. Thank you for reminding me of that!
Yeah, there's plenty of room to drill holes for the tools. Thanks, Carolyn! 😊
Woodturning with Phil is like a box of chocolates, never know what you are going to get! 😊
😊
Don’t be so hard on yourself Phil, it is a little different but still has a lot of character, nothing wrong with chunky sides every now and then, I’m starting to get a bit chunkier as I get older 😂 , always good to watch your videos.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Haha, I'm right there with you, Jim! 😊
Philip - I don't see how you think you've ruined it? It's a gorgeous piece of wood that you did real credit to - you did everything you could do to preserve and beatify it - so cut yourself some slack and give this piece some love 😁❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Ruined? Hell no! It's awesome.
👍👍
😊
Доброго времини суток Фил. Красивая структура дерева, красивый цвет древесины. Как всегда очень хорошая работа. Спасибо за видео.
Спасибо, любезно! 😊
As long as I have been watching you Phil I don’t think you can ruin anything it all turns out looking rate I am in awe
Thanks, Ken! 😊
I think we are our own worst critics. To me, it is a beautiful piece of art. It would have been ruined if it had ended up in someone's fireplace. What you and other artists do with wood is amazing. We see the beauty within and assist only to show the world what the wood wants to be.
Thanks, Martin! 😊
This piece is lovely and chunky, just right for filling with hot bread rolls, fresh from the oven, to eat with hot, chunky soup, in the middle of winter. Yum!
Oh, you've painted quite a nice picture, Stephanie, thanks! 😊
Well, Ii think you did a beautiful job on a wonky piece. I love the wonkyness. Phil, it's another beautiful piece with lots of character!
Thanks, Jane! 😊
We are all to hard on ourselves. I am thinking that this is natures way of saying it’s perfect. Love the look of plum. Thanks for sharing Phil 👍.
You have a positive attitude, Scott, thanks! 😊
Heart wood is beautiful colors. Again Phil thanks for sharing with your UA-cam family! Maybe you can put your old gouge on the wall of fame for all the years of service of turning out beautiful pieces of art
Thank you, Doug! 😊
Way too hard on yourself with this one, Phil! It's a chunky bowl, yes, but it's a pretty, chunky bowl that reflects the character of the piece. Always a delight to watch you do your magic! Thanks!
Thank you! 😊
You are an inspiration! I am learning to embrace the wood as it presents itself to me, rather than the illusion of perfection. The cracks that I find some wood always seems to have does not seem as hopeless to me now after watching you work your magic. Cheers Phil!
Thank you, Karen! 😊
Sometimes the wood just tells you what it wants and you just cannot change it lol nice work Phil😅
😊
A cracking piece again Phil. Not ruined at all but as nature intended it to look.
😊
Hey Phil, dont beat yourself up mate it really turned out lovely, you can only work with the piece of wood you have and do the best for it. I think you did real well, great job.
Thank you, Alan! 😊
You did what the wood let you do. That's all anyone could expect.
😊
How on earth can you say you Ruined this piece, Phil? Yes, it's one of a kind but if you're stuck with it, just send it to me in the UK, mate. LOL. I'd be more than pleased to own it and I'm sure most of your followers would too. Keep up the Good Work.
Thank you, Cliff! 😊
When I saw "RUINED" in the title I was expecting ... chaos ... mayhem ... explosions ... flying shrapnel ...
I'm a bit disappointed in how well it turned out.
😉
Haha, please see my pinned comment, Anna! 😊
All my life I have been my biggest critic & have frequently been taken to task over that. I understand that you have the right to be disappointed with this piece but at the same time it is far from being a disaster. You love to retain bark as often as possible & you love to retain as much heartwood as possible in your pieces. You have, therefore, been true to yourself in this piece & can not ask for more. It is still a very nice bowl with a nice finish but overall the wood decided a lot of the shape. Head up mate, tomorrow is another day & your skill will not diminish. Cheers, stay safe & well to get ready for your next project, Don from South Aust.
Thank you for your well thought out and understanding comment, Don! 😊
Unusual but beautiful Phil. 💜🙏
Thanks, Beth! 😊
I wouldn't say you ruined the piece, Phil. Some chunks of great wood just don't want to be perfect, so we do what we can with them and move on to a better chunk. Plum wood is definitely gorgeous and definitely loves to crack!
I should have approached this differently, Dave. See my pinned comment. 😊
We thought it a lovely bowl out of delightful plum! Thank you Phil😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Live and learn, Phil. A day (or a piece of wood) is a success if you learn something. I like your bowl.
Phil. You might not be happy with the results of the bowl. But remember this us viewers enjoyed watching you make it.
Good to know, Kim, thank you! 😊
Thanks Phil! Sure doesn't look ruined It looks like a pretty bowl Thanks Judy.
😊
The bowl is so lovely. The colors are gorgeous. You teach every time you give us a video.
Thank you, Judith! 😊
Phil, you’re plum crazy if you think that’s not beautiful- thanks for yet another great video.
Call me crazy, Alex! 😊
No you didn't ruin it, it is beautiful!
😊
I don't think you ruined it Phil. The piece wanted to be this size and you can't really argue with Mother Nature.
Great video and off to make another cup of tea now.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thanks, Huw! Hope you enjoyed your tea! 😊
Don't be so hard on yourself, Phil. I don't see anything that says you ruined it. It turned out nice.
Bill
Nice and thick, Bill! Thank you! 😊
Very nice like every Thursday night Phil. Thank you so much for sharing. See you next week
😊
Sometimes Phil you just don't get what we think we're going to get from a piece of wood. That piece of Lilac I told you about yesterday is still sitting on the lathe because I'm just not sure yet on the outside profile. It's a little bit frustrating when you have something in mind but just can't get there. It's all part of the process of turning wood. Anywho happy turning my friend ☺️
😊
I like this bowl, Phil. Looks like a nice mantle piece to me. On second thought, I would seal it and make an indoor fountain out of it. Yeah, that's it. Indoor fountain. Thanks, Phil, for your lovely work. ❤
Thanks, Kersi, sounds cool! 😊
Phil dont be so hard on yourself it is a beautiful bowl and well done
Thanks, Randy! 😊
I have a 20 year old plum tree in my front yard that I may have to take down due to beetles, so I may have a lot of wood to practice on soon. So, I can learn from your successes and mistakes. "Every turn is an opportunity to learn " as they say.
Thank you, Jeff! 😊
You have ended up with an interesting piece, showing the various textures. Good for showing the beginner.
Thanks, Alan! 😊
Hi Phil the Plum wood is beautiful I love the purple in it and the lovely grain and marking and nooks and crannies. The live edge chunky bowl is magnificent and unique well done, you truly areca masterwoodturner. Amanda xx
Thank you very much, Amanda! 😃
The bowl has lots of character.
😊
I like it Phil. But love watching you creat your art . I share your love for the natural. As a creator myself I know they all don't turn out to be masterpieces. But there's something in itself to be learned I guess.
Always learning! 😊
Mr Phil, this piece is beautiful just like any of your other work. It may not be an exceptional standout piece. But that doesn't mean it's not beautiful. You still put your amazing expertise to work on it. I think you're being a bit overly self- critical.
I think it's beautiful.
Thanks, Les! 😊
I think you did well, Phil. The unique beauty of the wood is well displayed
Thanks, David! 😊
I wouldn’t call it “ruined”, Phil. No, it’s not your best work but how often can you do your best work? You are far too humble, my friend!!
Take care,
…..Gord
Thanks a bunch, Gord! 😊
Plum ugly, lol.
There are those blanks that keep one humble. Most days I feel like I've already met more than my share. And then, I manage to meet another.
Still fun to watch and something in there to learn from you, Phil.
Thank you, James! 😊
Hi Phil Sometimes you can only get what the wood will give and be happy with it in the end. Ruined is not a word that I would use to describe this bowl. The bark
and heart wood keep it beautiful as always in your turnings. Think you can take the thumb off Phil, maybe not your best but better than my best.
Take care Bob
Haha, thank you, Bob, I'm sure you do just fine! 😊
It's not ruined, Phil. Plenty of beauty in this plum piece. Subtle colours and character.
😊
Just a reminder from mother nature about who is really in charge...lol ..you or the wood...
😊
Well, Phil. You may not like this bowl, but I sure do. I can identify with it. A little chunky, maybe not the prettiest bowl on the shelf, kinda rough around the edges.....yep, youve turned a likeness of me. Thanks! 😎❤👍
Haha, thanks, Dave! 😊
You did not ruin this piece! You let it be what it needed to be. Perfection is a dream. We all have imperfections. You let it be cracked, a bit thick, but allowing it's own gorgeous colors to be seen. Ruined? Far from it. You showed the beauty only age can bring. 💖
Haha, now when I look at it, it will be like looking in a mirror, Vicki! 😊
Although the walls are a little thick , I still believe its a great bowl Thanks for sharing Phil . Have a great weekend !
Thank you, Jon, you too! 😊
i just found you over two weeks ago and have been back viewing your videos you my dear are awesome and very funny love your work
How cool are you, Debra! Thank you! 😊
Nice bowl with lots of color, it may be chunky but it did not fly apart as I thought it might do from the title! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
😊
That plum heartwood really is some pretty wood. It's always a joy to watch you turn, even if you aren't happy with the final product. To get a more delicate shape from that piece, you'd have needed to cut away quite a bit of the blank and that would have significantly altered what the piece was and would become. The good news is it held together and you got a good finished piece from it. I spent part of today making cherry toothpicks while turning the cup end of a 3 piece goblet (it's never a good thing when you start seeing sawdust and chips exiting the side of your piece) and then making a replacement, so I would consider your finished product a win when put in that context.
Haha, sorry about the toothpicks, Mark! It happens to us all some time or another. 😊
Another natural beauty, Phil! Thanks😊
😊
Like it or not, it’s still enjoyable to watch.❤
Thank you, Vicki! 😊
Great job - no matter what. Beautiful bowl.
😊
Well Phil as usual looks nice to me! Maybe you need to fill it with movie snacks and you will like it better?😂
Haha, couldn't hurt, Mike! 😊
It looks beautiful even with the imperfections! I'd be happy to display it in my home!!
Thank you, Annette! 😊
You're too harsh judging yourself. I see another characteristic Phil Anderson masterpiece. I love it!
😊
I wouldn't say you've ruined it. I've always been of a mind that the wood tells you what it wants to be. Yes, we can try and force it into a shape, but we can't forget that wood is a natural thing, and we strive to show the nature in its best light.
😊
Beautiful “ruined” bowl, Phil. 😊😊😊
😊
Like always, I enjoyed your video Phil. I like the flat sides, haha. I also love to keep the original chainsaw marks. I hope all is going well for you. Take care of yourself.
Thanks, Scotty! 😊
Good example of piece of wood more suited for segments in my opinion. I do enjoy your love for any wood unique and your painstaking efforts to maximize its natural beauty.
😊
Oh, Phil! It's not your all-time best, not another Phil masterpiece, but certainly not ruined. You're accustomed to near-perfection, and falling short of that isn't a disaster. It's still better than the rest of us could do. I enjoyed watching.
😊
I agree with your evaluation of the bowl. Maybe you could roughly square the bowl to get rid of the thick sides? Maybe chainsaw it or bandsaw. Just a thought. Thanks for letting us enjoy your turning. I can only guess how much work it is to put out a weekly video.
Thanks, Ken! 😊
Hey ho Phil…you are a treat to watch and I enjoy every single one of your videos!!!
I appreciate that, thank you, Carol! 😊
Thank you Phil I enjoyed the show. I know how you feel about the bark falling off, I am turning a bowl out of mistletoe attached to a Red gum branch and had small bits vanish into space.... grumble, grumble, grumble. That's me doing the grumbling lol.
Haha, thanks, John! 😊
Only so much one can do with some pieces of wood, but still came out very nice Phil. Nice work! Lots of unique character...
😊
Hi Phil. I can't watch you very often, because when I do, I binge and watch so many in a row that i don't get anything done on my retired-person's schedule. I even watch videos I've already seen, which doesn't happen with other UA-camrs I follow.
Your videos inspired me to buy an old wood lathe of my own. It came with two complete sets of tooling, all for $20! But it needs restoration, and I don't plan to start using it till I get the grinder I bought for tool sharpening working as well. (It cost more than the lathe, and came without a motor, so I found one of those, too, but have to build a rig to hold them). THEN I need to practice tool sharpening before turning any wood other than simple stuff to learn on. We had a maple tree fall in a storm a couple of years ago, and I kept a long limb that I finally got cut into several smaller pieces yesterday.
Do I know what I'm doing? Absolutely not. But who cares? I'll take my time, stay safe, and learn. I have too much on my plate right now to even start, but this new possibility is always in the back of my mind, giving me something positive to look forward to. Thanks for that!
You are doing it right, Paul and it sounds like you are keeping very busy and having fun at the same time! That's the right way to be retired! 😊
