Well that really was very nice of the bus company to hold up the bus for you!
I have visited Bulgaria - it is a very friendly, laid back and easy to navigate country.
The long distance buses are very badly overheated and the windows don't open.
If you pay a bit more for the private 'luxury' bus line , long trips are more comfortable.
Sofia was ok, but I don't care for large cities; visited a few really nice smaller ones, like Plovdiv and Kazanluk, both of which I can recommend. Stayed at the Plovdiv Guesthouse - which is actually a nice inexpensive hostel. Can recommend it. Great staff, very helpful and friendly, good breakfast.

I've travelled all over my country for years and I've never experienced such a thing as an overheated long distance bus. Sure, there still may be some older buses servicing lines between close places but in general the long distance ones all have air-conditioning, play movies to pass the time and some even offer wi-fi and no one sees them as luxury.

As an israeli that took the grey hound bus from maimi to key west i can tell you that american buses are prefctly updated for the year 1980 lol. They are decades behind what we have in israel and our public transport in israel sucks compared to western europe!

Jermaine, go pliska, preslav, veliko tarnovo and plodiv. Eat local food you havent seen before. You'll have a blast. Also hit the black sea bourgas, sunny beach, varna, golden sands, albena. There are taxis that will take you for the bus ticket price once they get 4 people traveling that direction and will leave before the bus. Also make sure you don't get stiffed because you're foreigner. Some may overcharge you (not only taxis). Have fun maan!

True, :) Yes, the east coast is a great area..... and because of the mountains to the west, the weather is more warm and the humidity is lower. I was on vacation in Sunny Beach in the summer of 2007. It was a very good vacation..... :)

@@901cali That nobody cares, as you've already noticed. So count it, probably will be 0. During the commie years lots of people from uganda, nigeria, ghana came in as students (typically medical), bunch stayed, quite a few made families. While you may not see it due to how everybody runs between home and office nowadays, people are not that unused to less seen faces. The only thing that will get your face wrecked is messing with the local girls against their wishes, especially in bars. As US soldiers found out on their first week few years back. After they sent the memo, they stopped pretending this is vietnam and its been good ever since. So yes, mind the girls... thats the danger zone.
