Rush was a great Canadian rock band formed in 1968. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. They had a lot of great songs such as "The Spirit Of Radio", "Not Fade Away", "In The Mood", "Working Man", "Bad Boy", "Fly By Night", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", "Tom Sawyer", "The Trees", "Subdivisions", "Closer To The Heart", "Xanadu", "Anthem" etc.
On all the tours that came after Moving Pictures was released, whenever they saw YYZ on their luggage tags, they'd know that they were heading home to their families. The composition here was meant to represent the hustle and bustle of moving through a busy airport, and the drop in tempo when Geddy is playing the keyboards was meant to represent a brief pause to reunite with family and friends before going right back to the hustle and bustle. Great reaction; looking forward to more! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

Sadly Neil Peart the drummer died back in jan 2020. The saying goes. Think of you favourite drummer. Their favourite drummer is Neil. Says all you need. Top three rock drummers of all time. Next live Rush song should be Working Man (Live in Cleveland 2011 Time Machine Tour), followed by Xanadu (Live 1981 Exit Stage Left tour). I would also highly recommend the original studio version of Working Man, as it was this song from their debut album that got them played on the radio for the first time, in the city of Cleveland, which is one thing that makes that 2011 show so special. Neil is surrounded by 2 integrated drum kits screwed directly into a rotating riser. One side is mostly acoustic, the other mostly electronic, and there are numerous additional triggers and pedals strategically placed throughout the rig, including a Mallet Kat MIDI marimba which is programmable. He even has blowers to help keep his hands dry! You should definitely check out some of his drum solos, notably Live in Frankfurt, YYZ live from the Exit Stage Left tour (solo is in the middle of YYZ), O Baterista, and others. Neil utilizes every single piece of that kit.
In the middle of a song on this tour three guys dressed to resemble Rush in the late 70's would come onstage, empty the dryers, and walk off with the laundry. On the Snakes and Arrows tour someone would come onstage during a song to baste the chicken. When I saw them she was dressed as a Bavarian barmaid.

Hi guys, great reaction! Actually we do pronounce it YYZED here in Canada for most part. Nice that you had the back story. It was Alex Lifeson the guitarist who was flying them in to Toronto as he is a licensed pilot. The code stuck with Geddy and Neil and they started writing the song. Alex came in later and added his part. There were 40,000.00 people in the crowd and Alex Lifeson will also use foot pedals as well as Geddy. Rush put out a number of instrumentals. Where's my thing/ Here it is live in Dallas is a good one which also includes a drum solo. I'll never forget, I think it was during the Vapor Trails or R30 tour, the lighting rig above the stage blasting "YYZ" in huge white halogen lamps when Neil started tapping out the Morse code. I miss those boys so much.
If you are going to do comparisons... Geddy & Burke Shelley from Budgie (another criminally underrated Welsh band), Both play Bass, sing in the same vocal range and even look like each other.
I saw my fair share of Rush concerts from 1996 to 2015, and by far, the best show that I saw from them was on this tour (Vapor Trails). I didn’t have the fortune of attending this particular show in Rio, though!
Geddy Lee said, talking about how this song came about, that it was himself and Neil (the drummer) wanted to do an instrumental song that would be a "bass and drums extravaganza.". Then, Alex came in and added his guitar thing to it.. and they had a gem.
Watch Yes perform Roundabout at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Pay attention to the bass player. Geddy Lee is the only man alive that could replace Chris Squire. Great reaction. The song was originally written only for bass and drums. The guitar was added after. Ronnie Barker eat your heart out.
The reason the bass was more heavily emphasized is due to Geddy and Neil having written the song when Alex wasn't around. He added the guitar parts later. It's also why the bass and drums have those mini-solos in there, but the guitar doesn't. Wanted to just add that I didn't think a couple of Brits would need to be told this, but the song is pronounced Why Why Zed, not zee. 😉
the washing machines had to do with the stacks of amps the guitar players use on stage, Geddy as a joke said to fill up his side of the stage with washing machines

Not sure if it takes place in this type of musical setting, but I like to think so. Music is powerful to us humans. Especially Rush.

*9.3+* Rush are fiercely talented. 😂 I very much like the crowd singing along to a song with no lyrics. 😄 Some of the 'washey' sound breaks strongly remind me of 1970s Prog Rock which used a lot of Mellotron ①. Geddy Lee credits several bassists including Chris Squire of _Yes_ for his sound, and playing 'Lead Bass'. Let me cause some controversy!! 😉 Peart was a brilliant drummer. He played like a 10yo Girl! 😱😄 _"YYZ" - Rush / Covered by Yoyoka 10yo_ ua-cam.com/video/lGETWi1QufE/v-deo.html She even dances in the breaks. 😃 To be fair, Peart composed the drums, and Yoyoka is following his lead. She doesn't have his drum kit, but does well. _Yes - Chris Squire 'Lead Bass':_ I couldn't find any contemporaneous live performances with good audio quality by _Yes_ in the '70s. Some album tracks which have 'Lead Bass' (it's often sounds an octave higher than is 'traditional'): _Yes - "Starship Trooper"_ ua-cam.com/video/DKftiJS30Cs/v-deo.html 9m27s _Yes - "Roundabout" (Original 1971)_ ua-cam.com/video/QOrrNM4md8c/v-deo.html 8m36s - the bass is funky _"Yours Is No Disgrace"_ ua-cam.com/video/1fUudna1Xuw/v-deo.html 9m40s Bill Bruford's drumming is sublime too. These are *long Prog Rock* songs, without a good contemporary live video. So not very reaction (or BP1?) friendly. Worth a listen. Maybe skipping a minute or two to hear the bass if Prog Rock is not 'your cup of tea'. It's clear what inspired some of Geddy Lee's playing. Geddy Lee even replaced Chris Squire (who'd died) when Yes were inducted into "The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" Best Wishes. ☮ ① Wikipedia: _"The _*_Mellotron_*_ is an electro-mechanical musical instrument developed in Birmingham, England, in 1963. It is played by pressing its keys, each of which pushes a length of magnetic tape against a capstan, which pulls it across a playback head. As the key is released, the tape is retracted by a spring to its initial position. Different portions of the tape can be played to access different sounds."_ IIRC the tape lasted less than 10 seconds (7 seconds?), so the 'washy' effect was partly caused by that.
Great reaction, guys, and I say that as an American who's live in Canada the past 25 years, not far from Toronto, and as a lifelong fan of Rush for their incredible musicianship, for their deep friendship that kept the band together, in studio and touring, for 40 years, and for the way they took musical craft seriously but never themselves, an unusual trait in North America. I could suggest a couple of dozen Rush classics, but since so many have already, will make a different request that I think would blow you away with music and humour, from the smash-hit musical Hamilton, one of only two songs done by one of the all-time greats of Broadway doing a Brit, "You'll be Back." While there are many videos of the song live from people in the audience, the sound quality is awful, so I suggest this studio recorded version that featured the original cast instead: ua-cam.com/video/eKFN-aqPJH8/v-deo.html

They are many bands of this era are still going strong and have a fan base from teenagers through my mom's generation.
YYZ is pure joy in person. RIP Neal Pert
The drummer is Tom Hanks and Van Damne when he was young
YYZ is the Call sign for Toronto Canada. and you need room for Neal's drum kit
You need to react to Neil Peart's drum solo in Frankfurt !
I guess they didn't understand what was happening here, haha!!
Check out Neil's Frankfurt drum solo and la ville strangiato for another instrumental.
Happy show-offs here.
Highly talented.
the washing machines had to do with the stacks of amps the guitar players use on stage, Geddy as a joke said to fill up his side of the stage with washing machines
only RUSH can make Morse code sound cool and only Alex Lifeson can make tuning a guitar mesmerizing.
Try 2112.
Lifeson shreds on this song and the reaction?
"Cracking bass" poor Alex lol
*RUSH RULES*
RIP Neil Peart 1952-2020
💥THE GIRL WHO LISTENED TO RUSH💥
From the back of the stadium
She’s easy to see
Standing up at the stage
In her Starman tee
From Anthem to Limelight
To YYZ
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
And all of the rockers
And all of the heshers
Well they dreamed of the day
That they might get her
And drive her away
In a Red Barchetta
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
Philosophers and ploughmen
They can’t resist her call
They cannot choose
Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
They've gotta love her
No she doesn’t say "Pert"
And she doesn’t say "Part"
Yeah, she knows it’s "Neil Peert"
‘Cause he’s close to her heart
Say a prayer for John Rutsey
He was there at the start
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
Philosophers and ploughmen
They can’t resist her call
They cannot choose
Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
They've gotta love her
Why don’t girls ever listen to Rush?
But she listened to Rush!
The blacksmith and the artist
They can’t resist her call
You cannot choose
Not to decide
So you’ve got no choice at all
No you’ve got no choice at all
You’ve gotta love her

"The girl who listened to Rush"
There are dozens of you. DOZENS!
@@gfh110 Not so many back in the '70's. 😉
This was a popular guitar hero song , Also bits of the song has been used in commercials ,
It's called YYZed. one of there greatest instrumentals.
Its been discovered, using modern medical science, that people can experience a state where the entire group have their heartbeats synchronized during a musical event. Not sure if it takes place in this type of musical setting, but I like to think so. Music is powerful to us humans. Especially Rush.
Try Working Man Live in Cleveland.
This is the only song without lyrics that the crowd sings!
what is really amazing as you can tell .. most of the crowd looks like 20+ all jumping and screaming for a band 50 ish . years old .. and then you listen and you know why
Please check out Another incredible Canadian - Jeff Healy - See the light , blind at age one. unbelievable - get your seat belt on, you'll need it
Totally agree. I listened to him a lot when pop music was in one of its overproduced phases. He was a bit of a throwback even then, as a blues musician. I loved it.
In another dimension, Neil looks like Boz Scaggs if you're talking about musicians. Or Tom Hanks if you're talking about anyone.
If I remember correctly, YYZ is their ONLY instrumental. I only got to see them twice. The sound system in San Diego sounded like it rotating. The sound system at the Gorge at George was phenomenal.
Jeff, they done a few instrumentals although the titles elude me at the mo, but one of them is on Roll The Bones Album👍🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️
@@toddbrady183 they have done 8. La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, Leave That Thing Alone, Malignant Narcissism, The Main Monkey Business, Where's My Thing, Limbo, and Hope.
@@vinceaaron8921 great knowledge👍 My brain ain't as young as it used to be, Thanks for Reply, keep rocking out to the greatest band that has ever been:- RUSH👍❤️🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸
@@vinceaaron8921 and Broon's Bane, released on Exit... Stage Left album.
*9.3+* Rush are fiercely talented. 😂 I very much like the crowd singing along to a song with no lyrics. 😄
Some of the 'washey' sound breaks strongly remind me of 1970s Prog Rock which used a lot of Mellotron ①.
Geddy Lee credits several bassists including Chris Squire of _Yes_ for his sound, and playing 'Lead Bass'.
Let me cause some controversy!! 😉 Peart was a brilliant drummer. He played like a 10yo Girl! 😱😄
_"YYZ" - Rush / Covered by Yoyoka 10yo_ ua-cam.com/video/lGETWi1QufE/v-deo.html She even dances in the breaks. 😃
To be fair, Peart composed the drums, and Yoyoka is following his lead. She doesn't have his drum kit, but does well.
_Yes - Chris Squire 'Lead Bass':_
I couldn't find any contemporaneous live performances with good audio quality by _Yes_ in the '70s.
Some album tracks which have 'Lead Bass' (it's often sounds an octave higher than is 'traditional'):
_Yes - "Starship Trooper"_ ua-cam.com/video/DKftiJS30Cs/v-deo.html 9m27s
_Yes - "Roundabout" (Original 1971)_ ua-cam.com/video/QOrrNM4md8c/v-deo.html 8m36s - the bass is funky
_"Yours Is No Disgrace"_ ua-cam.com/video/1fUudna1Xuw/v-deo.html 9m40s
Bill Bruford's drumming is sublime too.
Geddy Lee even replaced Chris Squire (who'd died) when Yes were inducted into "The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame"
Best Wishes. ☮
① Wikipedia: _"The _*_Mellotron_*_ is an electro-mechanical musical instrument developed in Birmingham, England, in 1963. It is played by pressing its keys, each of which pushes a length of magnetic tape against a capstan, which pulls it across a playback head. As the key is released, the tape is retracted by a spring to its initial position. Different portions of the tape can be played to access different sounds."_
IIRC the tape lasted less than 10 seconds (7 seconds?), so the 'washy' effect was partly caused by that.
To enjoy Neil”s drum kit ,try his Drum Solo in Frankfurt.
Try “ the Best Intro Ever”. Welcome to the RUSH rabbit hole. Also the whole “Moving Pictures” album. Enjoy!!
There has been concerts in Rio with 3 million people who knows how many are here they line the beach for miles
I could suggest a couple of dozen Rush classics, but since so many have already, will make a different request that I think would blow you away with music and humour, from the smash-hit musical Hamilton, one of only two songs done by one of the all-time greats of Broadway doing a Brit, "You'll be Back."
While there are many videos of the song live from people in the audience, the sound quality is awful, so I suggest this studio recorded version that featured the original cast instead: ua-cam.com/video/eKFN-aqPJH8/v-deo.html
Great reaction...I mean Neil Peart symbol work is just SICK!
Best band ever.
the crowd of Brazil is the best. please react to Brazil is the best crowd in the world
Austin Powers says "WoW Wow Zee baby, groovy"
This song was on Guitar Hero
It really is funny watching the guy with the blue shirt try and understand this. He really wants to commit. However, there's a roadblock there. Keep trying (guy with the blue shirt)...It will be worth it:)...
neil's solo in frankfurt
Brilliant track.
I was told that the washing machines were there because they wanted a nice clean show - I think someone was telling me porkys?
How many times do you see an audience sing along with an instrumental? And it was the first time ever playing in Rui.
I went to a soccer game and a Rush concert broke out!
I'm just sad gigs like this don't really exist on this scale anymore, yea if you go to local bars that have open stages you can find some good ones but the feeling of these concerts with live music must have been genuinely magical
It's funny that people always correct the pronunciation of his name from pert to peert, when he says it as pert. Guess they know better than him
Great band, top musicians, very cool cheers!
God bless you for coming your young children in the face of something new keep working at it you'll figure it out goodbye and good luck
Check out Workingman Live in Cleveland see how these three guys in their fifties end a three hour concert With three transitions 🔥 fire , just as the title suggest it’s dedicated to the Blue collar worker
🤗 More Rush! 🥰 Cool Beans! 😁🐰
he had the biggest drum kit ever
Show matador!!! Passou pela Tour aqui em São Paulo Brasil, genial !!!
Alex would kill himself laughing if he knew he was compared to Meat.
New release!!「Save Yourself」by ONE OK ROCK .Please wacth!
The English music video for this song is on the "Fueled By Ramen" official channel, not the official channel of ONE OK ROCK.
From Hemispheres album.
YYZed man Zed! LOL!
We do not pronounce the letter Z like our neighbours to the south do friends... As you know Rush was a very Canadian Band..therefore we pronounce it YYZed... properly of course.
Meatloaf?! Bono?! For shame!!!!! lol
Belo comentario desses caros ingleses.
i say 10 out of 10 !!!
