Woodturning: The Myrtle Kiss
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 лют 2022
- This amazing piece of myrtle burl was the subject of a concept I have wanted to try for quite some time. Given the unique shape of this burl cap, it was difficult to reveal a gentle curving shape while also maintaining some of the more interesting features of the natural edge and wood grain. It was a delicate balancing act of approaching the final form one millimeter at a time until the shape felt correct. In the end, I was left with one of the most annoying sanding jobs of my life, trying (and mostly failing) to avoid those nasty points and edges, being relegated to hand sanding for upwards of 6 hours. When my wife saw this piece for the first time, she said it looked like a meringue or a Hershey Kiss, hence the title!
Please let me know what you think of this piece by leaving a comment below! I cannot always respond to every comment, but I make time to read each one. I always appreciate feedback, positive or negative.
A lot of people as where I find unique wood and burls to turn. I won this particular myrtle burl cap in an Instagram auction by @worldwide_burl. Check him out! He has daily burl auctions.

I could watch this for hours!
if you squint your eyes at the end, it looks like massive ethereal rings orbiting some great celestial needle that's remaining stationary. very incredible piece
Very cool comment. Thanks!!
I've seen you make a lot of beautiful stuff, David. I do believe this one tops them all. And perhaps it's just my own prejudice, but I love the fact that no epoxy was used in the making of this masterpiece. Superb!
Thanks! I’m trying to make some resin-free stuff now and then.
Gorgeous wood. Beautifully and skillfully made.
I'm hooked. Who knew watching wood turn on a lathe could be mesmerizing?
Once again you have shown your creativity and love in being a “woodie” I have been watching your videos for a while now, and each just blows my mind. Mother Nature is proud of you ten fold.
THE MOST SENSUAL wood turning EVER!
That myrtle burl is huge, and beautiful. great find.
I'm speechless. Thank you for sharing! You truly have a talent.
Thanks Melissa!
What more could anyone say, absolutely beautiful.
Myrtle is definitely one of my favorites.
Once I saw both pieces together, I saw an orchid. Now I can’t unsee it.
Stunning, gorgeous piece of work. I absolutely love it.
Absolutely beautiful wood grain. The finial placed inside is different, I like it.
I loved it up until the finial, which I thought looked contrived, extraneous and misplaced and ruined the piece. My opinion only.
I am definitely getting the feel of your older work with this one. It reminds me of why I fell in love with your work to begin with. Beautiful!
Thank you so much, Bethany!
I knew looking at that burl in the intro that this would be something amazing and it is! You never fail to create beauty.
Thank you, Dave!
Just in case no one mentions it, your camera work is just as good as your lathe skills! I loved watching both!!!
Thanks so much!!
From down under, as always, magnificent.
Pure alchemy. And your collie dog is STUNNING.
About the prettiest thing Ive ever seen. Thank you.
Best wood turning video on here. This one's my favorite.
Your turnings are like a good picture show. You never know how the ending will be but you know it will amaze you. Inspirational as always.
I'm amazed that you can look at raw piece of wood and see what you will turn it into be before you even start to work on it. A true gift. Your videos are very entertaining. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
It's like a drop of water 💧
Simply Stunning 🥰
Wow - with every video I watch, my need to have a try working with a lather becomes even stronger!!
You are a real artist, its amazing how beautiful a "piece of wood" can be. Thank you for sharing your ART. !!!😊
Quite lovely, something for a display cabinet. Mine's full. Well done, could watch for hours but only so many in my day, must attend to my work.
...amazing...I hope someday to have half the vision you possess in seeing a work of art in a doorstop...
I have wanted to see a myrtle turned! absolutely beautiful-
I would give this to my future wife to house her ring, “ just like this wood I want our bond to grow old and blossom into something desirable despite the age” this is what I gather from this video if it were my possession to obtain. You stir emotion with your videos sir without a word “you have a strong positive spirit about you” thank you……..!
Truly breathtaking, David! Watching you think out, adjust, create, and put on finishing touches to your creations is startling! That you could somehow see the transformation in your mind is beyond me. How does that happen? I’m guessing it’s years of experience plus an assortment of successes and failures along the way. It’s a family gift that’s been passed on for generations…..right?
Thank you for sharing. It’s given me a bit of new perspective of the world around me…. especially after watching
the “olive disaster.”
I’m sure the price tag on these creations is exorbitant, so I’ll just keep on with your videos, of which I’ve only seen two so far! 😊
You truly have God-given talent brother!!
So graceful in form. A beautiful work of art.
I would be more than happy if someone gifted me this. I could admire it day and night.😍
Amazing! I love the purity of your work.
Thank you, Kent!
Also the wood that you have access to is unbelievable
Such imagination!!! Your closing music perfectly matches the beauty of your creation.
Thanks Wayne!
It absolutely does look like a Hershey's Kiss! Your wife is obviously a very smart and fortunate woman.
I can’t believe your artistic talent. Wow.
Absolutely Gorgeous David. The two woods you picked are perfect together.
Beautiful burl. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much, Carl!
Truly a mesmerizing piece. True beauty
Ohh my goodness. Extraordinary! Beautiful, very unique!
It took me a while to get it bit the shape was that like a Hershey Kiss candy. Love the contrast colors of the wood. That dark rich color is so eye alluring. Very stunning piece that God has blessed your creative mind with.
Dear artist, my wife and I admire your art. I hope you are able to adequately and pay for your talent. Greetings from Slovaks from Serbia.
As always, in awe of what you see in a lump of wood like you started with.
That is a fantastic piece of art along with some great lathe work.
Beautiful work David. Bowl and finial are

I'm so glad I was recommended your videos. Everything you make is absolutely beautiful.
Wow I could never afford these beautiful pieces but what an awe inspiring event to be here watching thank you so much💕💕
Your ability to bring the woods beauty to the forefront is excellent. Great job!!!
Does anyone else watch these to go to sleep? I’ve been watching wood turning videos for the past couple months to fall asleep. I needed something new added to my ASMR, Bob Ross and rain sounds 😂
I was holding my breath through most of this because another piece like this flew apart. I'm intrigued trying to guess how you'll release the concept in your mind through your tools on the wood. I'm never disappointed. It makes me miss my sculpting days. Thank you!
Thank you, James!
James, instead of missing your sculpting days, why not relive them? Time to rekindle the flames
under that fire inside your heart. sawdustbob. r2t2

Thank you, Dawn!
Inspiring! That went completely a different direction than I thought it would.
This feels like the slow motion images of a drop of water hitting a body of water and making an amazing splash. Very interesting conceptually
Beautiful,mystical, organic 🙏
Thanks, Samuel!
WOW! Wood poetry! That's so metaphoric. I see mankind rising above a sea of discontent. I'll give a buck for that! Cudos brother.
Wowwwwwww such a fantastic creation art
Absolutely brilliant 👏👌
Wow! Gorgeous! Done on my bday 🎂 too!
Happy Birthday!
I know a lot of your incredible pieces: wonderful each one. What about a woodturning cube? That would be the crown of your work!!!
I get so happy every time you put out a new movie, were a bit afraid you had stopped a while back.
You are such an amazing artist, not only as a craftsman but in the way you shoot and cut your movies.
Thanks to you i bought my first lathe during the pandemic and started turning.
You are my greatest inspiration!
Keep up the great work Adam.
Wish you all the best!
Stig, Norway.
Thank you! Yes, I am trying to be a bit more consistent with my uploads. Cheers and thanks for watching!
I add a WOW to that too! You did highlight the graceful curve very well on the burl and with the finial. The colour contrast too! Dare I say it... this is an organic and sensual piece of art. 🙏
Thanks, Lynn!
its giving me The Ivory Tower from The NeverEnding Story! Beautiful work!
I'm very impressed with the shape and I'll have to agree that it really is reminiscent of a Hershey kiss, David! The grain is exquisite and you really made the most of it, I think. The little feet are a nice touch. I also noticed that you've gone back to using pyrography. Great job, as always, David!
Thank you so much, Lucy! It's my first time trying the 3 foot carving. Definitely easier than it seems!
That woodturning of that myrtle burl is absolutely gorgeous work and well worth the several hours of finish work you did.
Thank you for a cool video!
Thank you, Mark!
Watching you perform such great works of art with only a lathe and some wood chisels is so much fun. I can never guess the shape of your finials until you're done, although I always try. Thanks David. Your work is of great inspiration to me.
Thanks so much, Fred!!
Thank you once again for your beautiful art David!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks Will!
I had never heard of myrtle burr before. You made it not just to shine, and look beautiful: You made it stunning, gorgeous, and very desirable, all at the same time! Well done!
That is outstanding, David! Just every aspect of it, from design to finish. I've got my first lidded vessel near the top of my list, but not quite this elaborate. Thank you for giving us high targets to aim for.
Thank you so much! I appreciate it, Jay!
OH❣❣ MY❣❣ WORD❣❣ This s absolutely exquisite ❣❣❣ Your skill at the lathe with the various tools you used is mind-blowing!!!

Love that this is so relaxing while also being interesting and churning out cool ass art. Love these videos. Wood turning, metal forging and electronic restoration are the holy trinity of comfy watching.
It's even more beautiful then it was before you started. It's like a bloomed into a flower.
Thank you, Eddie!
A beautiful piece beautifully turned. Well done David 👏
