  • ‘The Speech’
    Secondhand Lions (2003)
    Hub McCann (Robert Duvall)
    Walter Caldwell (Haley Joel Osment)
    Hub McCann: What . . . hey . . . hey . . . hey.
Hub McCann: What the hell? It’s the middle of the night. What’s the matter? What are you doin’ here? You got somethin’ to say to me? Spit it out.
Walter Caldwell: What happened to her Uncle Hub? What happened to Jasmine?
    Walter: I . . . I have to know. I have to.
Hub: She died. Died in childbirth. Her and the baby.
    Walter: What did you do?
Hub: Went back to the only life I knew. Back to the legion.
Hub: For the next forty years there was always one more war to fight. Then I got old and came here. And here I am. And here I am.
Hub: You cold son? You better, here . . . you better . . . better go inside. Good boy. Yeah. Good boy.
    Walter: Those stories about Africa . . . about you . . . they’re true, aren’t they?
    Hub: Doesn’t matter.
Walter: It does too. Around my mom all I hear is lies. I don’t know what to believe.
Hub: Damn, if you want to believe in something then believe in it. Just because something isn’t true that’s no reason you can’t believe in it.
Hub: There’s a long speech I give to young men. Sounds like you need to hear a piece of it. Just a piece.
Hub: Sometimes, the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. That honor, courage, and virtue mean everything. That power and money, money and power, mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil, and I want you to remember this, that love . . . true love, never dies. You remember that, boy. Remember that. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, you see. A man should believe in those things because . . . those are the things worth believing in.
    Hub: Yeah. Got that?
Walter: That was a good speech.
    Hub: You think so? Thanks.

"For the next 40 years, there was always one more war to fight. Then I got old and came here."
So, so much left unsaid with that statement.

Whoever marketed and promoted this movie did a lousy job of it. This movie was made 15 years ago and I just watched it for the first time ever. One of the best I've ever seen. It's simple, not much of a plot, but the theme of the movie was much more important than any plot. The theme pretty much centered around the general goodness of people, and what's right. Something that's missing in most movies today.

This is the BEST film I've EVER saw, but NEVER heard of it as well, until 5 years later. I think they thought it was going to be a flop because all those KNOW IT ALL CRITICS probably tore it up, while us normal people ALL FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. Thank God for Hub McCann.

+havingfun 1968, my sister is 60 years old and is a lot like Hub McCann in many ways. She don't take any crap from anyone, especially young punk boys that think they own women. She's kicked more than one ass in her day, and she's very protective of people that aren't able to stand up for themselves, such as young children and the elderly. She's sometimes violently protective of them, which I love to see in action when someone deserves to have their asses whooped.

I just stumbled across it one day years ago at a Blockbuster and rented it. Boy was I blown away. How could something like this exist without me ever having heard of it.
Was a blessing to discover it and I have treasured it ever since.

Second Hand Lions... might be the only movie I’ve watched every few years, especially when some friend or grandson asks “What’s second hand lions?” a movie that I’ve watched many times, and every single time I love it, learn something new, see a bit of wisdom I missed the first few times through. This film is underrated, has a kick ass story, is either a family movie, a love story, and an epic action flick all rolled up into one. Underrated, under marketed, this movie deserves a thousand times the audience it received. It is one of those movies that can actually change your life, if you haven’t seen this, RENT OR BUY IT NOW!

If they tell you that this movie reminds them of you,,,, then you have made a great impression on them, one that they will carry a lifetime.
Hub and Garth BOTH remind me of my leading men. My Grandparents and their friends were very important in my young life. Aaron Hess, Wayne Black, Dave Hall, Gene Simmons, Dennis Ramey, Charles Hand.
All men who modeled the behavior that taught me how to stand up right, as a humble man and good American. They all taught me that slurs were bad, people tend not to be. Always treat others as you hope they would treat your baby sister.
This world has been so emotionally sensitive that those efforts are ever needed. Ultimately, keep love alive in your heart.

I second KJV, but especially, see the Sermon on the Mount. [Matthew 5-7]
And this: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and all thy soul, and all thy mind. This is the first and greatest Commandment, and the Second is like unto it: Love thy neighbor as thyself. Upon these two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. " [Matt 22:37-40] Key takeaway: loving your neighbor is right up there with loving God, but don't forget to love yourself, too.
As Jordan Peterson has pointed out, the message of the Bible is that, yes, we are all fallen sinners, but we all share a spark of the Godhead. No man is fit to rule another, but we are all fit to rule ourselves.
Always remember, the Bible isn't about a bunch of arbitrary rules laid down by an invisible super hero from outer space; it's wisdom refined over centuries, millenia by the people who were trying to figure out how to build a civilization in order to survive a world that usually killed them by the age of thirty or so. You might as well say, "inspired by God", it amounts to the same thing.
I wish this had been properly explained to me when I was Walter's age, and I very much want to hear Hub's entire speech.

Love this movie and now I have watched it with my kids many times, and each time, it is fun to watch. It doesn’t get old. Kids enjoy re-watching it.

Most seniors (I'm a real old senior) are just put aside. People look at them as just old people, almost like "the older you get the less
Important you are". Maybe we're not as sharp or as quick as we used to be but we've lived through it, we really know what it all about, we have
Had the experiences but were generally not heard, mostly ignored. I just smile and say to myself, "someday (if their lucky to live to be "old",
They'll know.) but we all, have our turn.

    • @timbettger
      @timbettger 3 роки тому +5

Everyone should have at least one old man. They don’t usually take a lot of maintenance. They don’t need to be taken on long walks, they can’t run far or fast, so you don’t need to chase them, and you never need a license to have one in possession. (Though I don’t recommend conceal carry.) Old men can be primed with far less beer and pizza than it takes to run an average college kid, and they’re usually fairly low on emissions. (“Hey, pull my finger” works to relieve any unexpected build-up of pressure.”)
But old men know: They know love, and strength, and joy, and loss, and futility, and the shockingly short nature of life. Get yourself an old man. You need one. They need you too.

I need all y’all men to listen to me for a second, I don’t know how much longer on this Earth I have, but I have been sick for a very long time. There are three women I have loved in this realm with all my heart, and that has never stopped so long as my beating heart has given me blood. My grandpappy raised me, and he himself was an orphan and lived a wild life like I had. My brothers, please, take my advice, I have killed and loved, learned and lost- reject toxic masculinity, be your own damn men. Love who y’all will love, be your own person and love yourself, my brothers. Take care of yourself, live with honour and courage, and give your whole heart to whatever you do. Please leave better men behind for me, too many women I know have been hurt by the bad ones. Be vulnerable, it’s not a weakness if you grow stronger from it. Learn from your mistakes, don’t hide them. People are generally good, and Mother Earth loves you, treat her right for your kids. I love y’all and long after I am dead and gone, I want my words to touch and teach someone, maybe then I’ll live on in your heart, son.

Yes Good does win. Where is Hitler? Weres is Stalin? Yes their stink remains but as the years go by ,, there evil is more apparentide.Thier goals falling to the way s. They died failures. Check out the last minutes of the man they called "Stalin( Man of Steal).. There are thousands of ways Good is winning all the time. It just does not have good enough press/ Love..oh its alive on planet earth, Go to a hospital and watch a tender nurse soothing the child with cancer or a crack baby..Think of people weakening their health by donating organs to see a loved one live a little longer... Visit a soup kitchen. Watch good people go out into the streets picking up stray unwanted animals, sometimes in col and bad weather an in dangerous areas, and giving them a home.Think about the tire moms and dad at Christmas time wrapping the last of the presents when dead tired to the the 5 second joy of beloved child.. Watch and look.. Love is everywhere.. U just need eyes to see. As for humans? God did not leave us. He is with us and behind the scenes making ready for a shinning new era where Love will be the building block of every new day, Its not far off. Evil is on its last hurray,,, Soon it will all be over and behind us... Just be patient and have faith,!Its almost over.....

I may not agree with GlowingGold on the whole god thing; but when it comes to small acts of kindness winning every day. As well as large ones, I agree. I agree that believing good to be dead, honor to be gone. Love to be a lie, and lies to rule the world, is a mistake. It is perhaps the grandest mistake of all. It is the belief that kindness can heal, that love matters, that honor and virtue are worth striving for, that the pain you feel and see is worth the hope that drives you to endure them, that gets you through. It is a self fulfilling hope. Yes it can fail, yes by the hands of many it can be mis-directed. People may not even agree on the hope that is being striven for. To not try, to give in to the evils and misfortunes that beat and batter at us each day. That is a sickness, a wasting disease that eats at the hearts of men. It is the attitude that becomes the infrastructure for those very same threats to take us down. For those teeth to finally clamp tightly on our throats. It can kill you, it can kill us all. That attitude and mindset disguised as "realistic thinking" or even worse "fact", leads to the very lack of maintenance that causes so many of our problems. Live for what you love, live to make things just a little better. If not for you, for someone you see, whether they are suffering, or whether you love them. There is no grand victory for good or evil. The fight only ends when you do, whether the enemy is gone or not.
