- MAKING MONEY RESELLING | GATEWAY ANTIQUE MALL SHOP-A-LONG!
One great thing about doing antique shows in different parts of the country is that resellers share tips about their favorite haunts! That’s how a lead from the Petoskey, Michigan show took me to Ringgold, Georgia.
Here where the Civil War raged in 1863, a large mall full of vintage and historic items stands ready for plunder. Gateway Antique Mall is a vast emporium I’m surprised I’d never seen driving down I-75.
Barbie dolls, Legos, die-cast trucks and other more contemporary toys have value to many collectors, but make me question my friend’s lead at first. Once through that aisle, though, I begin to find true vintage goods as small as shot glasses and as large as Chevy dealer signs. 1960s Christmas angels and a Deruta jar shine, while a venerable Boy Scout sign is a truly scarce discovery.
Fun things like Neil the Frog canisters and serious antiques like R.S. Prussia bowls and whale oil lamps show that this venue has finds for a variety of collector tastes. A healthy display of McCoy pottery and a pile of vintage radios are attention getters as well.
We find enough examples of Frankoma Pottery to illustrate clues as to its age (and desirability), discuss why Occupied Japan marks please some collectors more than others, and reveal the history of the Royal family through commemoratives. As the size of this immense mall hits me, I realize that another video will be needed to show all it has to offer!
Here are some more of the items we see along the way in this tour:
H.O. train gear, Wade Whimseys, DeSoto and Dodge hubcaps, enamel advertising signs, store counter cabinet, deer mounts, lanterns, door push, wall pockets, teepee ad figurine, copper extinguisher, electric churn, enamelware pot, bus stop sign, etc.

I so appreciate your understanding of cultural issues in vintage goods and your sensitivity to it! The most intelligent thrifter/antiquer viewing anywhere!
Thank you for the "shout out" George. I fell in love with old radios when I was a very small boy. On Sunday afternoons, my bother and I were taken to visit our great grandfather who was a very old man in the early 1970's. We would both stand in front of him and recite a Bible verse that we had memorized and then our great aunt would take us to the kitchen for a treat. In the 1970's, he was still listening to his HUGE Philco floor model radio that he purchased just after the war. It might have been out of style (about 30 years old in 1975) but it worked perfectly well and he was a frugal man. I remember the radio was as tall as I was and the sound from the vacuum tubes seemed to "boom" and fill the room. Wonderful memories. I could go on and on but I'll just say thank you for your lovely videos. I enjoy every one!
I'm so glad! I really enjoy your format too. I love to hear your stories, I grew up with a 1931 Zenith floor model radio in the house because my dad had been a US Navy radio engineer, saw it at a garage sale and decided he could fix it...he never did (lol) but after he died, I found an old repairman who did it for me and I felt really glad that I could honor dad's memory (and procrastination) that way.
@@TheAntiqueNomad Zenith radios were quality built for sure. What a nice memory of your father.
Great story Scotty! ❤
Your great grandfather would be proud of your new beautiful bungalow. ❤
Great video George! Thanks for sharing! ❤
Thanks for showing an RS Prussia piece during your antique mall tour. I collect RSP and I show a lot of it on my channel. The bowl that you showed is very pretty. I would have snapped it up for that price 20 years ago. Now, I find them for low prices at estate sales. Good luck shopping this week!
Thank you! I still think they’re lovely and now a terrific value for the money
My mother had wall pockets in the 50s ,I barely remember them but ,I would love to have some
They're fun and cute and a great collectible to me!
I missed the live. I am so happy you are getting the recognition you deserve. I know its hard work but you are going places.🥰
Thank you so much!! I'm just glad people are enjoying my adventures and going along with me
I think your channel is so interesting and informative. Thank you!
I'm really glad you enjoy it and I'm working on more!
@29:00 I love Scott from The Old Curiosity Shop!
He's got a great channel and perspective on this stuff and seems like a good guy. I hope to meet him in Philly
The Antique Nomad I would love to watch you two shop together! The wealth of knowledge between you two is outstanding! I’ve learned so much from both of your channels. ❤️
Fun and enlightening as always, George! Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you for coming along!
Thank you George, for taking us along on this wonderful tour. I am in awe of your broad and deep knowledge. It’s a pleasure learning from you. 🙂
Thank you! It's a pleasure getting to share information with you
Always interesting. So admire your breadth of knowledge. 😊👍🇨🇦
I really enjoy sharing it and I'm glad to have Canadian viewers I love it up there
Holy moly, I looked at comps for that Minecraft Lego set, its about $600 on eBay solds!!
Yes some Lego really sells now
The ceramic canisters with the Neil frog on it made me smile, whilst the items featuring the Royals were most impressive. Thanks, George!
It's hard to dislike a frog! The royalty pieces are usually quite regal
Cool very nice things
Thanks for watching and taking the tour with me!
Thanks for the video, great as always.
Thanks I had fun and I'm glad you could come along!
Thanks for taking us with you. Nice video.
Thank you! I had fun taking you along
I couldn’t really see the prices of the Royal pieces. I have a collection of commemorative mugs, including the coronation of Edward the 8th. If you get a chance to visit Royal pieces again, please tell us some prices. Thanks, George! Great video once again!
Hi! I honestly felt that dealer had a good collection for illustration purposes but the prices were out of date and too high so I didn't emphasize them
💙 catching what I missed last night....
Hope you enjoyed it! You are doing amazingly well, I need to shop with you
The Antique Nomad 💚♻️🤑 it’s been pretty incredible George, I’m going to be spoiled .... you need to get over here and help me, it’s more than I can handle, I’m not even able to make it up to Denver before my car is full 😳😜🤩
I did not know that King George was euthanized! I had to go read up about it. Always interesting facts to learn from The Antique Nomad!
It didn't come to light for 50 years! Quite a shock.
Oh my goodness. Just a few weeks ago, your video(s) was where you were in Cleveland. Now you were even closer to me. I live on that same road as this antique mall, just a few miles away. I love that place & am in there all the time. It would have been surreal if I ran into you there...lol.
Maybe next time!I hope to meet you soon
long hard work day....so relaxing to discover...Oh! George! new video....ahhhhhhhhhh..thank you
Thank you, I appreciate that and am glad to give you an enjoyable break!
The extent of your knowledge is astounding! Thanks for another interesting trip!
Glad you enjoyed it! Part 2 coming Wednesday
I love the cup and saucer wall pockets.
Those are cute and there's a lot of varieties!
I didn't say a word throughout your whole vid...soaking it all in...thanks George...
I'm glad and hope it was informative
I haven't been able to get out to this antique mall yet, so I appreciated the walkthrough and information! The pottery and the political mugs are so cool :)
I thought that line was intriguing too
I usually can say whether a wood item or piece of furniture is old but couldn’t have explained why!!! Thanks
I'm glad that helped! It really is more about getting the feel of it but sometimes I can put it into words
Hiya George, seeing your videos is giving me a bad case of wanderlust! I so enjoy seeing what things go for around the US, NY is so expensive! In spite of random checkpoints coming back into NYS I’m going to need a road trip soon! We have random checkpoints coming into NYS but it’s crazy, a civil rights infringement which doesn’t sit well w/ me. (Some awards, MTV maybe, being held in LA, they’re waiving celebs from it coming back from CA, which really ticks me off as many have had Covid), at nearly 61 I’ll prob get arrested for civil disobedience🤣! Send bail! Oops nope; they got rid of bail system in NYS idiots😡! (Now considering a shotgun, have to try out as I’m so tiny a big wind blows me over!) Seeing all that British royalty stuff brought back funny memories of my mother who visited me once when I was living in London. She was convinced she’d see the queen, even though I’d been living there for 6-9 months a year for about 3 years, never saw her. She got her wish! Since then, I’d often see them in random places, very strange! I’ve got a scarf from the queen’s coronation found in the 80s at a rummage sale (fill a bag sale, prob wound up costing pennies), it’s cheap thin silk, but has a medallion w/ her portrait, gold writing on it, sadly the portrait is starting to come off the silk so likely not worth much
I did see most of this in your other post, but I absolutely agree that checkpoints are a civil rights violation
The Antique Nomad - I’m sorry for repeating myself, I guess it’s showing how much I need to get away😉! J. XXX 😘🧡😻😻
thank you for sharing. I learned a lot from this video.
Glad it was helpful! I love sharing what I can.
Thank you! Loved seeing the old trucks my brothers played with. Now I hope we find the old Navy ships.
I don't see ships often but I'm always looking
Great shopping with you again!
Thanks for coming! More in part 2
I love seeing what is collectible in different parts of the US while you're on the road. Since you were in Georgia- what would you value Beatrice Albert of Georgia, Southern Harvest mugs & snack trays?
It's so interesting to me you know about Beatrice Albert! Her work was distributed by Alfred Knobler in New York, I knew Alfred in the 1990s when he was the owner of Pilgrim Art Glass, we ran a factory outlet store for his products at that time. I only know of one set that's sold and they got $175 for 30 pieces (a cup and saucer consists of two pieces as they counted it), so I'd estimate only $15-20/set for those. That was in 2015 at Leland Little Auctions in North Carolina. The designs are very trend setting and I believe are known by the New York Museum of Modern Art, so perhaps they will increase in value, but I think they're in short supply and not well known.
Thanks for the tour! Very interesting!
You bet! I had fun in this place and am glad you did too
Very informative
Thanks
Thank you! Please join for part two tomorrow
Had no idea there was such hostility towards the occupied japan items!!
Yes, it was surprising to me as well!
Enjoyed the video, Peachtree Peddlers in McDonough GA is a large mall also.
Yes I did a video there about a month ago! I would like discover more malls in Georgia
Oh, man, I would have bought those doggies at about 10:12. I collect porcelain & china dogs (but NO resin ones for me), no matter the breed or manufacturer. I love them all!!!
Me too!
In my home state - Wooohooo!!
Cool! Whereabouts?
Covington which is near Conyers
Another great tour! I've been looking for one of the electric churns for ages. Grandmother had one, and sold it. I've wanted one ever since. Really liked the acorn wall pockets, too. I keep an eye out, every time you show vintage advertising signs...for a Dr. Pepper😂 The things are like hen's teeth. Fantastic video!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you! If you get to Chattanooga it's just south of the Georgia border
I’m getting a clue that you collect RSP too. 😀. I am thrilled to be finding more of it at estate sales now vs 20 years ago.
@@livingthegoodlifechannel I used to collect RSP, but had to sell a lot of it when I moved in with my mom to help her, after dad died. I only have a few pieces left. I love it, though, and think it is some of the most beautiful porcelain ever made. My favourite is the "Reflecting Waterlilies" on the Icicle mold.
Thanks for responding back! I love it too. I have playlist dedicated to RSP in my channel. It might bring back fun memories and be enjoyable. It would be nice to get your thoughts on my Finds. People of like minds, you know? Take care.
@@livingthegoodlifechannel I watched some of your videos of the RSP. You have some fantastic pieces of it!
hey! nice haircut!
Hi George. I really enjoyed the chat! If you have the time check out some of the coin operated antiques on my page.
I love coin op and will try to go look!
I have a set of four shot glasses I would like to pass on to you if you ever come out to SeaTac Washington I would like to give the four of them to you as it is one of your collections George my favorite is the Pink elephant one
Hiya George, seeing your videos is giving me a bad case of wanderlust! I so enjoy seeing what things go for around the US, compared to NY. In spite of random checkpoints coming into NYS I’m going to need a road trip soon! Some awards (MTV maybe?) being held in LA, they’re waiving celebs from quarantine, everything both ways; showing preferential treatment is making people very😡. I’ll prob get my 1st arrest for civil disobedience @ 60.5🤣! Send bail! Oops nope; they got rid of bail system in NYS idiots😡! (They wonder why crime is up,🤔.) Seeing all the British royalty items brought back fun memories of my mother who visited me once when I was living in London. She was convinced she’d see the queen, even though I’d been living there for 6-9 months a year for about 3 years, never saw her. She got her wish! Since then, I’d often see them in random places, very strange! I’ve got a scarf from the queen’s coronation found in the 80s at a rummage sale (prob cost a quarter), it’s cheap thin silk, but has a medallion w/ her portrait, gold writing on it, sadly the portrait is starting to come off the silk so likely not worth much. I love the variety you show, so many interesting things! Have a lovely week! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️
I have the wanderlust too! Interesting that rich and elite people get to travel. You lived in London as well?--you have done a lot of cool things! I really enjoy your stories and hope to meet sometime. Anyhow, have fun where you can, and we'll see you soon
The Antique Nomad - Yep London is my 2nd home, miss it dearly as does my kiddo who still remembers 1st visit @ 2, almost 19 years later! I’d love to meet one day, never know since we both have wanderlust! J. XXX 😘🧡😻😻
Hi George & fans. I’ve tried to get with the program and changed my screen name from reality, Beth Txxxm. Is anyone else having trouble receiving notices for prescheduled UA-cams? Could use some tech help.
Which device(s) do you use to watch UA-cam?
I use my cell phone.
I watch on iPad.
@@oldstuffbethtx8052 You should see a BELL icon next to SUBSCRIBE button below the video. If you tap on that bell and choose ALL NOTIFICATIONS, you should get notified when new videos are published-as long as you also have UA-cam notifications on in the iPad's settings.
I get the reaction of the Japanese, I bought a nazi medal once, in a flea market here in Trondheim, to throw it in the river... the market is located on the Nid river bank. At first I was disgusted to see the piece for sale but the vendor was just an idiot selling all sorts of other idiot stuff (in my opinion), I was a vendor at the same flea market and I just couldn’t relax with that medal for sale close to me there... I had to destroy that thing. Luckily it was very cheap, so I just bought it and threw it in the river... no one will buy that thing again...
While I am a historic preservationist, I do understand how these items represent truly hurtful people and situations, and that for the aggrieved, a purge can be a powerful and healing act. I've had items at shows that represent some terrible aspects of human behavior and I've put them aside when people have complained out of respect
I get you, I am a historian myself... I also have great respect for history and I don’t support hiding or denial of the past but, sometimes, destroying a little material symbol that brings personal memories of terrible years, like the five years Norway was occupied by the nazis. In addition, I feared that piece of nazi memorabilia would be purchased by some nazi sympathizer in a moment in history when a new generation of them is making a come back pretty much everywhere. So, I decided to act... since I wouldn’t be able to destroy it with my feet, I threw it to the river...
Where are you in Georgia?
This was Ringgold near Chattanooga. I drive through to Florida a lot
I understand that you need ads to finance this but please, this is close to unwatchable due to the ads. Every few minutes an ad or two. That makes it impossible to enjoy your content. Why not put a long one in, I do not know. But people let it run while doing stuff and this does not work out for me...
I understand, I wish UA-cam didn't do so many breaks when they insert ads either. They also seem to tailor them to the viewer somehow. I think they want you to get their premium package so you don't have to watch ads on any channel
Please, crowned not coronated--no such word.
Speaking of old radios. Arvin radios used to be manufactured in Princeton KY near your home in KY. My grandmother worked there.
Really? That's so interesting to me! I go there all the time and knew they used to have a textile plant but had no idea about Arvin radios.
They make cookies there now. Lol.
