Do you think Morobu only practiced one kata? Or did he practice multiple?
@Musashi's rage Great point of view!
Dude what style did he practice
Motobu ryu karate jutsu
I think he practices pinan or heian katas because he is under from itosu anko
he was one of the best karate guy
Thanks for the mention sensei! 🙏 Hope to film together soon again 🎥
Of course!
Let me shoot you a dm.
definitely sensei.. we want that 😊✌️✌️ Oss!
WOW!!!!
This is probably one the the best collaboration in the youtube karate circle.
I'm happy that the online Karate community is getting really united lately like Wonderboy, Seth sensei, Karste nerd and Waku sensei.

Great quote!
Yo respeto mas al hombre que entrena una sola patada mil veces y mil patadas de repertorio ....yo hago eso !
Just to add, It was 10,000 kicks and 10,000 times.
Never takes long to find the fanboy quotes. Next is the Tyson one about having a plan😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@Lee-sj8tj he has died many times? Ok Yet Bruce died only once. Like a phoenix rises from the ashes so to has Mike Tyson.
The most EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUES tend to BE THE SIMPLEST
Yes!
1 to the chin or hook to the spleen or kick to the jewels
He was probably the best fighter because he spent most of his time fighting and little time on kata or perhaps a lot of time on both however one kata perfect is better than 20 kata sloppy thanks for the videos😁🇺🇸
There are only two ways that I know of to become a legendary fighter. The first is practice hard and have lots of fights. The second is become a martial arts screen star and die young
I've studied many kata over the years, but for the handful of times I have been involved in a real fight, I have only used techniques from Naihanchi. I totally agree with Motobu Sensei.
One of the Shorin Ryu masters stated that the Niahanchi kata was easy to learn....but to master it takes years.
New sub .. I’m getting old , and I’m very physically broken . But do to a lifetime of Kata , even after breaking my back in six places , I get up and and continue every day. I’m no longer a fighter (I’ve gotten much wiser ) ,yet still deadly if forced . Kata has been my Goto for 25 years now. To maintain mind , body ,and spirit ,and to refine my waist of movement and energy. Now I focus more on my other Martial art , music ... amazing how the two flow together ,as do all arts.
Thank you , be seeing ya .
🤠🎸🎶🙏✌️
Choki Motobu is straight up OG gangster and I'm sure he studied other katas other than Naihanchi, but he chose Naihanchi and he literally studied it to its full potential to utilize it for his personal self protection method.
Nope ... he only knew naihanchi... why? Well, history has him being an Ass... and a drunk, getting thrown out of every dojo he went to. By the way... the fight with the boxer never happened (No recorded proof of any real western boxer visiting japan at that time... ) most “real” martial historians think the story was made up.
@@Blueslicks321 so a news article from the next day is no proof whatsoever? Enlighten us, master, as you seem to know everything about the time. How was life back then? You obviously have been there yourself.
@@Blueslicks321 Stfu! That is what you dreamed last night?
@@justagerman140 Notice how he hasn't responded
@@Blueslicks321 Lmao the og article and its translation is online. Your point is moot
I can believe it. I got a chance to practice Tae Kwon Doe forms as an “untrained” student to help a black belt obtain their instructor certification. Even after years of martial arts, that one hour helped me move as smooth as butter for days afterward. I take the forms seriously now.
Thanks!
His training and teaching methods were very different! He focused more on footwork and posture and transitioned to more practical fighting methods versus the standard way of teaching which was done and still done in , past all karate schools. He rarely touched on kata and thought it was a waste of time. Very interesting martial artist!
I don’t think he thought is a waste of time! That’s too strong to say I think
@@KarateDojowaKu yeah you're right it might be too strong to say that it was a waste, but he belived that Kata had it's limits, and that we shouldn't be constrained by them.
''The techniques of Kata have their limits and we're never intended to be used against an opponent in the arena or battlefield''.
-Choki Motobu
(No karate practioner here) He didn't say kata was useless, he understood that karate's particular use of Katas as a teaching tool was necessary with big group of students but tuning out the bunkai(applications) might turn the practice of Katas(by extension karate) in art form with loose relationships to real fighting and self-defense. One has to understand that before Karate and Judo, MA was an elitist endeavour and the myth of peasants creating MA and their associated weaponries is just a myth. Traditional MA teaching was created for small groups of privileged students or only wealthy or nobility families could afford a MA instructor. Motobu himself was scion from a prominent Okinawan family like many great Okinawan karate masters. Actually many karate schools(uechi ryu, goju ryu) consider sanchin as THE most important kata in their school.
Well according to his book, you still had to learn kata's. The order being Learning basic movements -> kata -> then sparring.
I've been in the martial arts for a very long time. I learned many Shotokan kata, but only really practice one that's my favorite Tekki Shodan. I have black belts in three karate systems, my highest rank is 5th Dan. I'm humbled by your video. Arigato gozaimasu.
Thanks so much! Great experience you have!
Knowing one kata, focus on each movement attacking an area of the body. Then change the area after practicing it for awhile
Changing the aim!
Nahanchi was not one but favorite kata of Motobu. Sometimes he said that this is best kata because can develope everything
I like the background music you have in this vid. It has kind of like a creepy Mortal Kombat vibe to it. Very interesting video👍👍
Glad you like it!
Ossu sensei! The thing about Naihanchi is that, if done properly, it teaches a special kind of body mechanics that makes all your techniques more effective. I believe that's why Motobu was able to break a brick by his backfist from zero distance. Cheers! Michael
Well said!
Nice video. Thank you!!
Nanhanchi,naifunchin(OKINAWA)

Great list!
Nicely done.
Great video !
Just subbed your channel. I’ve been doing karate for decades (Goju, Nidan) but usually can’t stomach much of the karate vids/presenters out there.
Very interesting and informative.
I have always believed it is not how many techniques you know, it is how many techniques you can do well.👊.
I heard that James Masayoshi Mitose, the man who brought over Okinawan Kenpo to Hawaii, also only practiced Naihanchi
Love this form, lateral attacks and grapples :)
Very nice to know. Thank you for the Video.
I began to practice Shorin Ryu on Okinawa while serving in the Air Force at Kaden a, A B. Now at age 74 I still practice some kata for exercise. Fukyugata 1&2....Niahanchi 1&2...Paisai, as well as the Pinans....also Heians.
Thank u, I subscribe ! Jesse Enkamp is the best karaté ambassador on earth ! I choose Tekki Shodan as the free kata for my black held and I still work on it 🇫🇷👍🏼🍒
Always goes back to basics.
I agree!
I have taken/dabbled in many martial arts styles in 27 years of doing martial arts since 5 years of age. 5th Shotokan, 3rd kyokushin, 1st taekwondo(presently taking! Also in the instructor program) next April will begin my cert for instructor. I have also done muy tai, bjj, judo, ju-jitsu, and wing chun. I believe what ever you work for, make your own, and dedicate yourself with a lifetime of practice, you can be successfully satisfied.
Thank you for the vid
No problem! Thanks for checking it out!
Dear Presenter, a very good point of Mr. Motobu´s Kata preference, and I also learned from Bleack Belt references of Old masters that a Karate practitioner should shoul do Kata which work for him/her, consequently it is the suitability and hence practicability of Kata that count, and not the quantity. As for methodology, a real presentation of the kata Naihanchi with emphasizing, not only mentioning its main aspects, is what Mr. Motobu could have deserved.
Paul , 66, retired instructor of Goju-ryu Karate.
I love to practice the bunkai of this kata!! It's amazing
Same here!
Well I love Jion as Shotokan Karate Kata :)!
I once read that originally when karate was starting before it was even called karate when it was only know as Te most people only studied one kata all their life. So if someone asked you what art did you study you would reply Saisan or what ever kata you were taught. As restrictions were loosen and the art became more known about more katas were taught and systems began to form. Thats a very condensed version I what I read while studying the history of Okinawa karate. God bless.
To put it into an analogy, I see naihanchi kata as like a fertilizer that nourishes your karate skill, year and year.
Pls do a detailed demonstration of this kata!
You doing great Sir!
Oss!
Respect from Pakistan!!
Thank you!
@@KarateDojowaKu You're welcome sir
Omine Sensei at the Omine Karate Dojo in San Bruno California was famous for Naihanchi Kata also. Much respect.
It ,makes sense..even in my kungfu class we learned quite a lot,of sets...in 15 years..But There are Only 2 that Really stuck with Me....and One can be All you NEED...
That's right!
Tekki no kata.! It’s the only kata I relate to for translation into practical application. The applications are very open to interpretation.
Makes perfect sense really, naihanchi is one of the simplest kata, and what techniques are gonna be easiest to remember in a real fight, the simplest ones.
Kata for me it's like Shadow Boxing, it's very useful obviously it's not a real fight but a exercise you do for let your mind sharp and always ready to fight and help relax.
I did naihanchi for my TikTok page. The amount of trolls I’ve deleted commenting on it. Telling it looks awful, it’s impractical and Kara is useless. Imagine my surprise when I hear that possibly the strongest karateka known only practiced this one kata!! The best thing is, you don’t need much room to perform this one meaning you can virtually do it anywhere. 😊
I agree with Motobu. Arigato ☺️
I learned a version of niahanchi sho and ni in shuri ryu. I think we learned it at about green or brown belt. we learned nine kata for shodan. sanchin and tensho are supposed to be for both striking power (ki) and for good health.
Hi friend...thanks for your videos.
greetings from cali, colombia.
I have a question. How many heian katas are there??.
Great video! Thanks! BTW, in 0:44 You talked about chinese pirates, but the man in the picture is Master Yang Chengfu! 3rd generation of Yang Family Tai Chi 😅 I practice Tai Chi taught by his great grandson, Master Yang Jun. And believe or not it has a lot of things in common with Karate! Regards
I notice and curious about this too.. Why is Taiji Master Yang Chengfu picture shown on a Karate video, more over when the context is about Chinese pirate.
I learned Naihanchi and there was 3 in the series. My instructor told us it was only one large kata at one point, but was broken into 3 later. Do you know if these was the case? Sho Dan seems very short.
Thank you Sir.
Tekki ! Wow such simple kata I did not know had such far fetching impact on practice!
The bunkai of this kata is brutal (when done right). So it makes sense that this kata is best for self defense or practical application. I never understood why it is needed to train 10 different kata for your 1st dan. In my opinion only 2 kata are needed. One kata to learn the basic techniques and movements (for instance shiho tsuki geri in gensei ryu) and one signature kata for the karate style you train. This kata should learn all techniques needed for your style (like sansai kata in gensei ryu). I know it is tradition to learn more kata. But the two kata I just mentioned, were the only ones that learned me how gensei ryu karate worked and how I could apply the techniques. I learned naihanchi also, but even my sensei did not know the correct bunkai. I learned it from a shihan years later...Long story short: learn two important kata only and understand and apply the bunkai :-)
The many Kata are taught do they will not be forgotten, in the days of the old masters, like Kusanku etc. They may have only practiced 1 to 3 Kata. Most specialized in one kata, and fighting technique.
When I'm tired of Spar hard I always do Kata and gain a boost of energy it's good for my mind only train hard it's boring sometimes we need relax.
You should also try learning Daito Ryu AikiJujutsu , judo , combat hapkido , kickboxing , boxing etc.....
I’m actually editing a video on Daito Ryu now!
The only kata I still remember completely...
Why the photo of Yang Chengfu at 0.45 ? do you think it is Motobu, Also I remember a very high ranking Shotokan teacher saying that Tekki (the Japanese version of Naifanchin was boring) The bunkai of the original kata as taught in Okinawa is a complete study in its self
It is better to be great at one kata or a few kata than a lot of kata and not being equally proficient them. Sometimes less is actually more.
LOL You are so right!!! I read about Motobu's one KATA but I did not expect someone to come foreword to say so. The fact that Motobu did learn only one kata - some says he did not even learn the whole kata - does not make him a Master. He was Big and by nature, strong and charismatic fighter. Also because of this It was easy for him to win even Funakoshi who was smaller and weaker... That does not make him more advanced in technics... neither he's "karate" better than shotokan...
great video!
Thanks!
I have performed Naifanchin, as some call it, hundreds of times but would never say I have mastered it. Nice video.
As some call it?, It is the original Kata from Okinawa, that all foreign styles like Shotokan, etc. use and renamed and changed. Karate come from one place now called by Japanese Okinawa, originally Ryukyus.
I am a Kyokushin practitioners, I learn and study numerous Katas as well yet I found that--in my opinion--Tekki, Yantsu and Tensho cover the most usefull techniques in practical self defense.
The Shorin Ryu style I took, the Sensei stated that Niahanchi was the most important kata all the way to the black belt.
Naihanchi is the same from tekki shodan
Let me tell you something. I practiced this kata for about 17 years starting as a child, my dad was a perfectionist. I still return to it while training for mma. It’s really the bees knees.
Why?
Yes that makes a lot of sense.....
One thing i know about choki motobu is he was one of the teachers of my late first souke. Other thing that i know about him was he didn't teach a lot of kata. Only few. The kata should be effective in a fight. If it is not effective, throw it.
My sensei once told me: "you know many katas. Now, practice 1, 2, or 3 katas that you like everyday. No more. So, when comes the real fight (street fight or fight with no rules), the movement of the kata we practice will come out automatically."
Honestly, everytime i have to do dojo kumite, i automatically use kata pin-an yon-dan or kushanku.
Yes. One kata makes sense. That way you're not diluting your time with kata upon kata and can focus on training the actual techniques within it.
The Foto at 0:38 seems to imply that the ends of your obi used to be tucked under the obi itself. Maybe the ends became lose when moving a lot e.g. when doing kumite, but it was originally not intended to be worn the way we all are used to today?
That's a possibility!
But many argued that Chōkī Sensei knew not only naihanchi/tekki, but other katas too.
He practiced but ultimately only used naihanchi because it actually worked lol fujikoshi is and will forever be a joke
knowing isnt the same as practicing.
His school taught multiple kata still does to this day Motobu specialized in Naihanchi
While performing all the Poomsae (Kata) of WT Taekwondo, I experience some or the other direct influence of Shotokan on its forms.
Naihanchi Shodan as explained by Taika Seiyu Oyata was created by a genius to hide such deadly moves within such simple looking kata moves
1 kata = 6 year(s)
1 Naihanchi = whole life.
Thank you for the video but I would like to point out that the photo at 0.44 to 0.50 is showing a great Taijiquan master Yang Chengfu, not a Chinese pirate.
Sensei, can you explain about different between WKO and ITKF.
I studied shuri ryu, Motobu's style. Naihanchi was about the sixth kata we learned-the first part of three, that is, at about brown belt. I only got to shodan so i never learned the third part. Motobu is supposed to have said "naihanchi done as one is the onlyl kata you need to progress in karate". I sure don't want to argue with him, but being an igronant shodan I would have thought you'd need sanchin, tensho or both , for chi development.
Hallo, it looks like the tekki s kata !!!, Sensei can you do a video with this kata ? Thanks. Greeting from Germany.
Yup true even My favourite is Tekki -Naihanchi ...
Nice!
Ananku is a very practical Kata, it is somewhat underrated.
Tekki Shodan has always been my favourite
He taught multiple kata and specialized in Naihanchi his lineage still continues

Sensei, did Motobu train only in Naihanchi/Tekki Shodan or did he also train Nidan and Sandan?
Sensei, do you believe Yantsu could be a good choice, on equal footing so to speak, with Naihanchi and Sanchin? 🤔
I've never tried it because that one is from Kyokushin :(
@@KarateDojowaKu no problem :) thank you for your answer Sensei 🙏
Some styles of karate teach Naihanchi as the white belt form some teach it as a brown belt form. I teach it as a white belt to brown belt level form because it is appropriate at many levels
Enjoyed the book. Was told not to talk about it with other students in the dojo...?
interesting that Tatsuya Naka also practiced tekki shodan alot and developed many ideas from it, I wonder if it is a coincidence or he knew about this story?
Ive been seeing and comparing karate kata and other martial arts. The naihanchi/tekki kata group is starting to look like a wrestling/counter-wrestling kata.maybe its not by acident people might call kiba and shiko dachi the sumo stance.
Very nice point on "Shiko"!
Were katas such as Naihanchi Shodan, Nidan and Sandan once one continuous kata and then divided into 3?
So was he training with naihanchi kata meaning Tekki shodan OR the three Tekkis as one kata?

How would you compare Motobu Choki to Masutatsu Oyama in terms of practicality and effectiveness in a fight?
I don’t think you can haha
@@KarateDojowaKu Oh. OK. Thank you for responding, How about their styles? Is it possible to compare them? Just curious. I'm just interested, because I heard so much about Kyokushin through the years and even have a couple of biopic movies about it's founder. I found out about Motobu Choki first from Jesse Enkamp's channel, and asked the same question. You were the only one toreply. I meant no disrespect with the question. As a fan, I'm just curious about the art.
He was the third son, not the first son, hence the reason he made his own style and did not learn Motobu Udundi. The style he created is named Motobu-Ryu. His grandson, Chosei Motobu, is the current Soke of both Motobu-Ryu and Motobu Udundi (previously kept only within the Motobu family). The first son was Choyu Motobu. Motobu Udundi is likely more similar to the old "Te" systems and looks a lot like Aikido.
review Japanese jiu jutsu vs shotokan :D?
Thanks for the idea!
What style of Karate is that kata from?
Please tell me first what is kata , and what is the meaning of it...?
A collaboration with Jesse soon?
YOOOOOOOOOO aren't you the guy in that 'day in the life of a typical Japanese university student ' by PaoloFromTokyo video a while back???????
Its like learning one style and better to master one than learn 20 and never really understand the bunkai behind the moves.
Do you think it was stronger or more effective than Uechi Kanbun?
I'm not sure, but it would've been a close match!
Consider one of Uechi's students has killed someone learning what I can assume to only be a fraction of Uechi Ryu. And also learning the body conditioning to be able both absorb and deliver blows. I think Motobu would have definitely loved to Kakie kumite with him and would have been more interested is his combative knowledge than Funakoshi.
Kanbun Uechi was intense
Motobu Choki emphasized kumite, but by "kumite" he meant what we would call "yakusoku kumite". For him kumite was an essential part of training (along with picking fights in the red-light district to test his skills). He didn't agree with the trend during the Taisho era to emphasize kata over kumite. And his kumite drills are realistic and practical, unlike modern yakusoku kumite.
Why do you have a photo of Tai Chi Chuan master Yang Chengfu at 0:49?
My mistake!
0:44 what does Tai Chi Master Yang Chengfu have anything to do with this?
i also practice these, there are three but was one long Kata
Why did you put a picture of Yang Chengfu at min 0:50?
That was my mistake!
