Yeah. Trying to learn guitar I always thought the left hand was most important. Check his right hand action where most tone and feel variations come from
I heard good guitar advice a while ago but didn't quite understand how to put it in practice until I looked at Chris Buck's tab. The advice was to essentially decorate each note you play. That's one thing that Chris does extremely well, and sounds gorgeous. In guitar tab language, instead of playing the notes 6 6, he'll play quick slides like 7/6 7/6. Or he'll do a kind of pre bend on the 6th fret to move the tone up a half step to the 7th fret and drop to the 6th. So he's targeting the note on the 6th fret, but using slides or bends to get there. Just something I found helpful, and hope it helps you.

Thanks for all the effort that goes into these. I really appreciate you sharing some insight into your techniques/articulations and how you make your guitar sound so majestic. Really inspiring.. All I need to do is grow a couple of new fingers and find all the picks I've lost while trying to tuck them into my index finger, whilst stomping on 17 overdrive pedals and rolling off the volume pot. I'll have it mastered in no time! Seriously though, you could make a living out of this..
The way to play like this isn't to fret about holding a pick in a particular way. It's about imaging the sound you want to get from the guitar and adjusting things so what you hear from the guitar matches your aural image. If it doesn't, figure out what you're doing wrong and fix it. And TBH it's a cliche but you really want to find your own sound rather than trying to copy someone else's. If you search youtube for 'Jem' you'll find a lot of people who buy a Jem and a Eventide harmoniser and a bunch of other stuff and they try to play For the love of god the exact same way that Steve Vai does and the end result is never going to be interesting. If you watch the video where Polyphia are watching other people doing covers of their music, the ones that really impress Henson are the ones that don't copy him, they play their own version of the piece (sometimes better than Tim can play it - which is saying something because his riffs are not easy to begin with)
I don't know what guitarists Chris likes but we wouldn't be watching this video now if he just copied them.
The focus should be on the sound. Just like when you learn to drive a car you don't have to sit and figure out how to move the gear stick or the indicator stalk smoothly and quickly like someone who has been driving for decades. You know it feels clunky at first but after hours of driving it becomes automatic for free.
Your focus is on what's happening out the window not on how to move your hands or feet. You concentrate on where you want the car to go, how fast you want it to go, whether you want the car to speed up or slow down. The motions with your feet and hands take care of themselves. They don't need specific practise. Most of the time when someone who plays really well is asked how they do it they have to stop and think about it. They don't know. They aren't looking at their fingers. No more than when they walk they look at their legs. They don't think "I'm writing a song, what finger wiggles could I do?" - they are concentrating on the sound and then they wiggle their fingers to get the sound they want to hear.
The thing to note though : there are some gymnasts of the guitar - people who have no interest in music and they get into channels like, hmm, let's call it Groy Trady - who spend countless hours wasting their time filming each others fingers and picks and looking at it. And they all sound pretty shit because they're looking when they should be listening. You know they are clueless when you go to their site and they've created videos explaining why Guthrie Govan sucks. Based on some 15 second clip out of a 4 decade career as one of the most acclaimed guitar players - but apparently, we learn from these misguided people that his picking is wrong. And they start giving names to the way people pick and waffling about it ad nauseum.
Don't get caught in that trap. I assume if you're into Chris you're not into that - but don't fall into the same trap of watching Chris's playing. Listen to it - if you want to create notes of similar value and quality - the secret to that is in your ears not in looking at Chris's pick.
All the stuff where he appears deft at holding the pick in a particular way, moving the pick around - all of that he got for free whilst he was figuring out how to make the guitar make the noises he wanted to hear. He didn't download a course on deft pick manoeuvring from jam central.
If there's one trick to guitar to avoid getting stuck in bad habits or dead ends it's : relax. Use as little energy as possible. Don't grab the guitar like it's a baseball bat (I say, not that I know how to hold a baseball bat). If your hands are getting fatigued then you're trying too hard. That's about all you need to do to fret about your picking or movements. The rest is a case of picking and fretting so you get the sound you want. Your ears are guiding your hands. Rather than just reading a tab seeing it says 7 9 and you hold down 7th fret, pick, put 3rd finger on 9th fret, pick again, without listening to the quality of the sound and, yes, you play roughly the right notes in the right order but it doesn't sound like music. To make it sound like music you use your ears, not your eyes - and specifically don't worry about how someone else plays or holds their pick (especially when they're not using it)

Where can I buy CD's and vinyl? Just been on amazon and can't find anything. CB has something that's almost impossible to learn or teach. And that's something called FEEL. He's an astonishingly good guitarist. Understated yet powerful. The antithesis to people like Yngwie Malmwank. I just pray Buck and Evans can back up their talent with a great album. I'll definitely look out for any nearby gigs. Though living in Shrewsbury I'm guessing I'll have to travel!
Hey Chris! Thank you very much. The album will be coming out later this year, hence not being available at the moment. I'll keep you posted on dates but it'll be late October :)
As for gigs, we'll be announcing another tour in the next few weeks. Nothing in Shrewsbury but Birmingham's not too far away ;-)
