    Very interesting T. My buddy and I go back and forth all the time on hook sizes for carp. Goes to show, not all size 6 is the same like you said. Enjoyed it as usual. Fish on Brother.

    Thank you! It helps that u did this video because it gives an idea of the hook i/we need, since both are popular it helps even tho. i haven't read anybody talking about using eagle claw #6 or #4 for fishing carp. I hope they are not too weak...

    I have to use carp hooks with a thicker gauge in my area. They love to dash into the weeds and straighten normal gauge hooks.

    Have you tried using barbless hooks for carp Tom. In England we use pliers to pinch down the Barb. It does no damage to the fishes mouth and is much easier to unhook. I’ve been using barbless hooks for over 30 years and have never been concerned about losing fish as long as the line is kept taught.👍

      @OutsidewithTom  6 місяців тому

      I prefer the barb. There are actually many times when I'm not able to maintain a tight line, e.g. when a fish runs toward me, or when I'm fighting multiple fish at once. I can see why barbless makes sense in England, as those fish are being caught over and over and the cumulative mouth damage would really add up. The wild fish I catch here likely have never been hooked, and never will be again. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

    I fish both hooks and both work, but I did decide a couple of things. The Gammi's are forged, therefor heavy, and will sink a floating bait. Also, the Gammi has a flat eye, so the leader will control the hook point. Tie 2 hair rigs, one with the line exiting the eye towards the point and one exiting the eye away from the point. Pull both through a closed fist and notice how the point contacts the skin. One way works much better.

      I've never been a fan of the hand test, mainly because I've never seen a fish with a mouth like a human hand. 😀

    I have both of those brands, and actually think Gamakatsu are better hook thickness wise, but with that said I have never had either hook break on me and you CAN NOT easily find the Gamakatsu in your local store. the Eagle claw I can easily find. I actually use another hook I think is called fairland and they work also. I think recommending the Lazer Sharp is better for the average joe, price wise and ability to find.. some people (not you) over complicate carp fishing. Your hair rig video is the best around, simple and works. I have alarms, but I don't need them I can easily hear my Kastkings peeling drag. I like that you are not pretentious with your carp fishing

      Yeah, sometimes people try to make things more complicated than they need to be so they can feel sophisticated. Just not my thing. I appreciate the kind words, thanks Michael!

    I've had something very similar. I got to carp fish with someone with 30 years of US carp fishing experience who uses size 6. I showed him my size 6s and they were a full size smaller than his size 6s. His suggestion is to match the hook with the size of the bait going on the hair rig more than looking at the numbers.

      I like that philosophy on choosing hook size. 👍

    Do you have a preference for hook color? Silver, red, bronze, black?

    • @OutsidewithTom
      @OutsidewithTom  2 роки тому

      Black for sure. Shiny stuff can scare away wary carp. Of course, if your water is like chocolate milk than it probably doesn't matter much.

    I think the Gama’s are using the European size 6 which is the North American size 4. That’s what I use because that’s what they have at Walmart.

    😂 don't feel bad Tom, i get told my hooks are too large but i catch plenty enough carp to say i had a good time whenever i get back from going fishing.. I use 2/0 same type of hook as you and I use L042 in size 2. I'm not sure which one I like better but I'll tell you for the amount of pressure I generally put on a carp in the areas I fish I'm pretty glad to have a hook that won't break and if I get one stuck in a log I've got to wrap my 25 pound mono around a stick and take 4 or 5 steps back before the hook will straighten out

    I just have had the best luck with number 2, or 4. But I mostly use number 2. I have caught carp on 3/0 circle hooks well catfishing many times in the last 3 years. So really if it can fit in the carps mouth and hook them in the lip then it ain't to big, it's that simple. I just ain't a fan of anything smaller than number 4. I will use a number 4 usually with a hair rig. #2 for when I'm just loading the hook up with corn. Reason why I like the number 2 is its small enough for carp but big enough for when Mr channel cat decides he wants to play spoiler. But I welcome catfish or carp anytime.

    People always gonna have a opinion on what u do bro. Every one thinks they always know better and whatever. U know I use the more traditional euro carp style but never will judge some the do it differently than me. I think I like about your videos I the u keep it real and definitely u use what works best for you and in the end that's what is all about. I keep being you and forget about stupid people. ...

    The G-carp are garbage. I ordered both the wide gap and the curved shank and Ive never lost so many fish as I have with those hooks. I think it's the micro barb it's way too small, any slack line whatsoever or if the fish runs towards you the hook pops out. Kordas are crazy sharp and are good hooks but honestly I do just as good with those eagle claws, been using the same ones you have for 3 years now. I like to use size 2 and 4

      Interesting. I've never used them, they're still in the package. Just bought a pack to compare size with the Lazer sharp.
