I’ve got a first generation BL serento V6 here in Australia. It’s has 460.000 klm on the clock and still pulls like a train. I brought it of an elderly couple who had it since new and was used to tow a small caravan and sometimes a dog trailer to dog shows all over Australia. It is DUEL FUEL petrol lpg and will travel up to 1000 klm on both tanks. I currently own a 2005 Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDI and I love the car. It's got 296000km, no rust what so ever, only need to replace the fuel pump. Can't complain, powerful engine, great car.
Very honest review, I live in Montreal, Canada and I had exactly the same problems you mentioned, mostly rust and electrical problems but a part from that they really last! I had a 2007 Kia Sorento lx for almost 4 years and I just exchanged it for another Kia Sorento 2008 because the old one had lots of rust but never gave me any problems and it had 320 000 KM and well as you probably know there’s snow up here most of the year and let me tell you that I’ve never used my shovel since I got my first Kia. Pretty reliable 4x4
Can you do a "Best buys under $5k" video for different classes? While I'm partial to an estate, I watch the rest for general knowledge and entertainment.! Keep up the good work!
Another known issue with the Diesels is the injection seals. They degrade and allow some oxidation and sooting in the oil sump. The carbon build-up blocks the oil pickup pump and when that happens, major damage can occur. It's the same engine that's in the Hyundai Santa fe and iload. This issue happened to my iload/H1 work van. Ceased the engine. Broke the turbo. Complete rebuild. 18k repair bill (New Zealand dollars) Luckily insurance paid. Thanks for the review
mine just had a $4500 rebuild in Australia. Same issue. I bought it with 180,000km on it, drove it 8000km home with no trouble, daily drive it for another 2000km, then another 2000km roadtrip (Fluids & filters service before it, of course,) and little did I know, the rings were overdue for being changed when I bought it. Took me two years on a pension to save up to get it rebuilt, Flying down to Sydney and picking it up next week.
we just returned from a 3200mile trip to Spain and back in ours. bought new 16 years ago 2004 auto 2.5 diesel with 180000 miles on it pulled our 1.5-ton caravan and never skipped a beat. I live in rural N. Yorkshire. 4X4's in use round here would surprise people - Dacia, FIAT, Ssangyong, Subaru and Suzuki abound. What the wannabe rural set don't get is that real country folk don't spend £90k on a fancy LR 4X4 and then wreck it - farmers and retired folk are much much more savvy. ( none of them buy a Proton Savvy btw ) the Chelsea tractor set/ WAG's have fallen for a lie
I'm in Devon Darren loads of old defenders. The favourite here used to be the daihatsu four track. Now the farmers tend to use early mitsubishi l200's. The little jimny is also supposed to be brilliant
This one is going to be the OddBall. I close to purchasing 2009 2,5td Sorento with 170HP and 400 of torque. All this because I was looking for a kinda like the one here. Ended up with brown leather everywhere, an OLED display panel, and all the bell and whistles cars around 2010 had. It has way better interior plastic. The interior look changed from gray with gray to graphite with black and brown. It is not much used at all 100k miles. The turbo and clutch were changed with a double mass wheel as well. I would call it boring if I wouldn't want to go for lifting the body, changing tires for Off-road, M/T, and adding steel bumpers front and back. The price is 4200 euro!!!

Great video, I have mine since october, its a late 06 XT manual and I have to say its a lot of car for little money. Now with this corona virus crap going around I have lifted mine and going to waxoil whole underbody. Its a challenge, as you mentioned they do rust quite a lot but, they are no worse than early Land Rovers. I had 02 Discovery and have to say this Kia is much more comfortable and nicer to drive. Yes probably not that capable off road but who need that these days. All back roads have tarmac on them and if you looking to go off road you have to pay in some adventure centre or some local quarry...
He is spot on. I got my 25. Diesel 7 years ago and waxoyld it straight away.. Only the basic model but one of most comfy and easy to maintain cars ive had. Oil filters a bit awkward but can be got with several extensions and oil filter strap if u take heat shield off turbo.. Saves crawling underneath.. One of best vehicles ive had
I find it much easier from underneath. It's high enough that if you throw down a tarp you can slide under it, reach up over the crossmember and get at the filter by hand. If it wasn't overtightened previous service the filter spin off by hand. And drop about 300ml of oil all over the crossbar every damn time lol. (I cover it with shop towels and just let it spill.)
This was my dream car and still very time I see this KIA just said this is the SUV I want. But till today money keeps me under its control. Can afford even a $500 car. Damnnn. Don't u have something for me over there?
Bought a cheap Kia Carens MPV for a grand this year and so far quite impressed. Very plasticky but cheap to run and maintain (2nd hand parts on ebay are readily available). The 2.0 diesel engine feels plenty powerful and I'm very happy with it.
I just found this channel and I have to say that I am quite surprised and impressed. You are so direct and to the point, no embellishments for dramatic effect. You also remind me of myself in that you have that vast knowledge base of common failure modes for everything on 4 wheels. You can only acquire that through decades of dealing with every single one of those broken bits and bobs personally. I bet you can correctly guesstimate what problems a vehicle will have based on the year, make, model, miles and location 9 of 10 times right? And if someone is having a specific problem you can correctly diagnose the vehicle based on an accurate description of the symptoms, conditions and variables at least 75% to 80% of the time. Am I right? I bet I am. I tell people that I'm like the most useless trivia expert. I know so many things that help me out in absolutely no way unless a car is involved lol. Ugh, well after that incredibly long winded comment you probably stopped reading but you've got a new subscriber, cheers from USA! P. S. Your love for cars and ability to appreciate every car in its own way. That's a sign of people who understand that cars are all massive piles of compromises. Don't change a thing brother.
Another good video. Funny enough I was thinking of buying a house in the Welsh Valleys and a 4x4 is essential if you want to get to work in the floods or snow. I was wondering about a 4x4 on a budget and you go and make this video. Keep up the good work!
Great tow cars, shame the chassis rots, had a 57 plate which the fuel tank clogged up with crap & starved it with fuel. Cat got nicked too! Good to drive, comfortable & capable on the dirt.
Very nice! I grew up in a rural area. Most everyone had a beater four-wheel-drive, to get around in the winter...old pick-ups, Jeeps, Broncos, Scouts, Land Cruisers, and Subarus. (Also VW Beetles). Many of our roads ran across rugged terrain, and were un-paved. During the summer months, the dirt roads were wash boards often coated with tar, to keep the dust down. No point in driving an expensive vehicle, due to the assault on your finish.
Last time I saw a leaking seam on a fuel tank was on a 1980 Allegro! Thought that problem was a thing of the past. Glad you explained the grille as every time I saw it I was thinking ssangyong surely?!
I bought one just like that, same year for a grand back in 2008 with 70k miles with a broken timing belt. I intended to fix and flip it but I ended up keeping it because it was so much better than I expected it to be and I used it and abused it for years. I towed with it and it pulled way more weight than it ever should have been able to.
fuel tank: rub soap around the seem, that will stop the leak for a little while. keep a bar of soap in the boot and give the seem a good rub every once in while.
I find your videos are the perfect compliment to the supercars and classics shown in Harry's Garage. From Bentley's to erm... Kia's. Real world motors to keep your feet on the ground when you've had enough of dreaming.
The fuel tanks can de-laminate inside, and the broken up coating then blocks up the filter in the fuel pump which sits under the rear seat, so you can get to it to clear it out. The only real fix is to take the tank out and have it recoated inside, or replace it. This happened to our diesel Sorento - ours was a manual and I really liked it.
got the same car, you are spot on. one more thing to check: valve cover gasket, they tend to fail. not the end of the world, but you will fail MOT. reparable DIY, althought tiring: the V6 was no designed with kindness for the mechanic in mind.
Nice to be taken into the Derbyshire countryside with Matt as entertaining as ever - seven minutes away from the wall-to-wall armageddon coverage. Carry on raising our spirits Matt before some of us oldies forget how to drive!
I agree with you and think it's a very smart choice on your part. But I'd remove that hideous grill and the weird looking exhaust tip. :-) I have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe V6 AWD and I'm only the second owner. It's the most reliable car I've ever owned and I just won't part with it until it completely dies. No rust and still looks great although the series 1 Santa Fe has this 'organic' look about it. The 2.7 V6 engine is sweet, pulls well (for a small capacity V6) and is quite economical at 25 mpg on average even with just over 175k on the clock. Everything still works, too. It's worth nothing, so I don't worry about it ever getting nicked.
Was just waiting for you to mention rust. Your spot on, rear door arch, side sills can be a issue and rear axel brackets but Kia will replace the rear axel brackets for free. And to mention the timing chain, the main one which goes is the bottom one which sits in the oil sump, had this happen to me, luckily the engine still ran after replacing it. Not cheap though looking at £700 for the full kit and labour hours. Owned mine for 4 years now and what a cracking tow car it is. Another great review 👍.
Thank you for your videos! I have never owned a 4x4 but I've always wanted to get one and get it out of my system!! 😆 I have a 1984 2.8i ford capri which was my baby for o er 10 years! I want to possibly sell it and get into the 4x4 market always liked the BMW X5! Anyway thanks again for the words of wisdom keep up the good work! 👍 Take care mate 👍
Watch out for the inside of the fuel tank delaminating and contaminating the fuel causing (very scary) engine cut-outs at random intervals. My 2003 Sorento Diesel had this issue but Kia ran a scheme to fix them FOC as they’d previously acknowledged it was a manufacturing fault. I think that scheme has ended now though, so if you buy a mk1 used, try to find out if it’s had its fuel tank replaced. That issue aside, my Sorento was excellent and very capable in all conditions. Oh, and if you get the choice, go for spec levels with the manually selected 4x4 as opposed to TOD because with TOD the rear axle wind up can be quite severe and needs the tension releasing on a regular basis by going somewhere muddy/icy (and safe of course) and giving it a good dose of wheelspin. But that’s half the fun, right? 😋 And finally, if you get one with the premium sound package fitted, buy a good head unit and prepare to get the fillings blown out of your teeth - it’s incredible.
My 03 manual failed on rot. Was 1500 to repair so i scrapped it. Got a cheap grand vitara xl7 which is just next to useless towing. Just picked up an 05 sorento auto and the difference is night and day on the gearbox. The auto makes the car a pleasure to drive. The manual is way to agricultural for day to day driving. The auto is lovely and smooth though.
This is exactly why I bought my £500 03 Freelander - as a winter runabout but I like it so much I shall keep hold of it as it just went through its MOT no problem
Many thanks another very good review. Quite interested in going for a Kia as my next car. Sorrento bit big for me , but the current model Sportage is a fantastic looking car. In fact all the Kia's range are handsome cars. Really appreciate if you took the Sportage for a run 😉
Just got my 17 sorento SXL. Fully loaded and I love it. Cant wait to throw some winter tires on it for next year! Winters in Wisconsin get brutal sometimes. The AWD should be better than my 08 335i rwd 😅😅
I bought a cheap Kia Sorento, I loved it, driving it was like sitting in your favourite armchair..it was as old as that one but a 2.5 diesel. Then it died when the rear axle hanger snapped and tore the suspension off..it got wrote off.
@@frankcoldwell4424 Ok how is that possible? Was it a high mileage one? Because I have one of these for 12 years and no major issues. It has been a great car.
Kustu I don’t know, it had done less than 80k. Maybe the damage was there when I bought it despite the new MOT. I think it’s possible that it might not have been a kosher MOT, just saying as the guy selling it has moved away now, small foreign run sales pitch.
Frank Coldwell Hi I own a Kia Sorento and Kia replaced my rear axel brackets free of charge about 2 years ago. Not sure if they still do this now, they are known for rusting out, Kia know about it and should have recalled them all back but they didn’t. Sorry to hear yours broke. And your right about it been comfy to drive and it’s a cracking tow car as well 👍
I had a Kia years ago when they weren't well known and it was a nice car but...the fuel consumption was appalling. I swapped it for a BMW 520 because that did more mpg and proved cheaper to insure and run.
I'e owned both a Hyundai Elatntra 2.0 diesel on an 06 plate and an 05 kia People carrier one manual one auto both diesel. Yes they sound a bit agricultural but both were extremely reliable. The elantra even had leather seats heated seats and a sunroof
I've had an 04 XS diesel for about 5 yrs. 198k on the clock, had new clutch, discs, and rear cross member during that time. Bit of rust round the edges but keeps chugging along and returning 30 odd mpg on a run.
So this is why I'm sitting in a T shirt in my garden in Trafford with a cold beer. The British weather, perhaps you should buy a cheap 4x4 every winter. Time for a review on a Subaru Forester or Outback, I remember when every other farmer was running Subaru pick ups a vehicle that had been to the Lancia school of rust proofing .
That grille is an KDM Kia grille, if I am not mistaken. The normal export grille looks MUCH better in my opinion. The bigger Borego shared the export grille and it was as close to branding as Kia ever got before Pete Schreyer came in and redid the whole lineup with his tiger nose.
You didn't mention the fuel tank has a plastic coating on the inside which brake's up blocking both filters & clogs up the fuel lines , quite a common problem & not cheap to fix but Kia has replace loads free of charge even old Sorrento's. + The rear sub frame rots very badly & very expensive to replace. Allso the mk 1 suffered with steering rack leaking , front prop shaft problems, & injecter seals failing. But I have a 05 xt & I love it a lot better build quality than my 300tdi discovery .l
Considering most of the world is in lock-down, it's appreciated that you are still making content for those of us in stuck in isolation. Keep safe & thanks.
Had. 2.5crdi version for 2 years, first year it cost a fair chunk in maintenance, but the second year it didn't cost a penny. Ran better than any other car we have had. Only sold it because the 4wd system stopped working and so was a bit useless for us. I'd have another though
injector rings perish, you get exhaust fumes blow by the injectors and get into the oil. over time the oil turns to sludge, and clogs the oil pickup in the sump. Anyone buying a diesel one of these should change the injector rings asap, and every 40,000km after. It wouldn't hurt the first service to take off the sump when the oil has been drained, inspect the oil pickup and clean away any soot from the perforated end of it with with boiling hot water or steam. These are incredibly reliable engines as long as they have their regular maintenance and services performed on time.

I have driven loads these when they was brand new I used to work at the distribution centre at killingholme were I used to valet them they do lean a lot on corners
Those 3.5 V6 Sorentos were Mercedes money when new. Would be a lovely big cruiser. Not keen on the grille on that one, much prefer the standard Kia one. But stick a private plate on it and no one would guess it was a 53 plate....
Amazing how some of these companies turned themselves round. Used to have people turning noses up at the, not anymore. Hyundai Sante Fe next please 2016 onwards haha :)
Great video, I was fortunate to own a 57 plate XE 2.5crdi auto model with only 70 odd thousand miles on the clock. One of the best cars I've owned. Agree about the electric aerial, so had mine disconnected and fitted a windscreen mounted internal aerial (perfect for car washes) and also fitted a rear parking camera linked to a rear view mirror that had a small screen, which would come on as you selected reverse. High driving position and selectable 4wd was ideal for my part of West Sussex, but unfortunately someone drove into the front N/S after skidding on ice in Feb 2019 and it was then deemed a write off by my insurance company. ☹️

Pleased to hear it! :)
That grill really sends the message - "I defy all prejudice!"
The condition for something that is 17 years old is very impressive.
Can you do a "Best buys under $5k" video for different classes? While I'm partial to an estate, I watch the rest for general knowledge and entertainment.! Keep up the good work!
Good idea!
Cant beat it for 1k, cheap useful tool 👌
Another known issue with the Diesels is the injection seals. They degrade and allow some oxidation and sooting in the oil sump. The carbon build-up blocks the oil pickup pump and when that happens, major damage can occur. It's the same engine that's in the Hyundai Santa fe and iload. This issue happened to my iload/H1 work van. Ceased the engine. Broke the turbo. Complete rebuild. 18k repair bill (New Zealand dollars)
Luckily insurance paid.
Thanks for this review.
I guess this car is a good option to use in an African country with only 25% of roads covered in tarmac 😅
we just returned from a 3200mile trip to Spain and back in ours. bought new 16 years ago 2004 auto 2.5 diesel with 180000 miles on it pulled our 1.5-ton caravan and never skipped a beat. I know it's only worth £500 but try it with a land rover (if you dare).if they put a seven-year warranty on their cars .they would go bankrupt after 5...
No you are just tight in Yorkshire
Hahaha
25k views in a day! Mate i remember being subbed when you had 500 subscribers. Here's to 100k subs plus. You are actually really good at this whole tube malarkey
I know, its crazy! I cant believe how quickly its taken off. Thanks for your support :)
Going through all your old videos as only just recently discovered the channel. Brilliant keep them coming. Liking your Great descriptions. 😆👍
Glad you like them!
Yeah thats quite right :)
A reliable old work horse that's a lot of a car for a grand , good review
Thanks for watching
Brilliants! Yeah, just the job for scabbing around the PeAk in winter. Nice one Matt.
Haha yes youre right! Thanks for subscribing :)
Another good video. Funny enough I was thinking of buying a house in the Welsh Valleys and a 4x4 is essential if you want to get to work in the floods or snow. I was wondering about a 4x4 on a budget and you go and make this video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching
This is more like it 👍. Cars that us mere mortals would buy and run
Thats right
Great car and yes so underrated. Good video dude
Nailed it Mat '
Rugged was the word you were looking for :)
I agree totally with you '
And no I'm not a rent boy :)
Last time I saw a leaking seam on a fuel tank was on a 1980 Allegro! Thought that problem was a thing of the past. Glad you explained the grille as every time I saw it I was thinking ssangyong surely?!
Sadly rust is still a problem on a lot of cars when they get past 10 years old
The engine in that Kia is the bulletproof Mitsubishi 6G74. I have in my Pajero. Superb engine, not fuel efficient, but seriously tough.
A big lump of a thing but at a grand can’t be bad. Nice to see the Peak District too.
Thanks! I appreciate it
We had this Kia years ago. One of the best vehicles I have driven. Miss this..
This exact one?
@@HighPeakAutos no not that exact one you where driving but in black and grey.
It’s so hard to get to the ignition coils I will say that total pain in the ass!
Nice to be taken into the Derbyshire countryside with Matt as entertaining as ever - seven minutes away from the wall-to-wall armageddon coverage. Carry on raising our spirits Matt before some of us oldies forget how to drive!
Thanks for watching. I've got plenty more videos coming soon
Hi matt great video again really enjoyed this one even though it wasn't from the JLR stable very informative hope you are well best wishes Ian.
Cheers Ian, take care
@@HighPeakAutos cheers matt best wishes
I agree with you and think it's a very smart choice on your part. But I'd remove that hideous grill and the weird looking exhaust tip. :-)
I have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe V6 AWD and I'm only the second owner.
Great review as usual . unbiased personal knowledge is a refreshing change to the corporate bol...x . Thanks again.
Thanks for watching
Was just waiting for you to mention rust. Your spot on, rear door arch, side sills can be a issue and rear axel brackets but Kia will replace the rear axel brackets for free. And to mention the timing chain, the main one which goes is the bottom one which sits in the oil sump, had this happen to me, luckily the engine still ran after replacing it. Not cheap though looking at £700 for the full kit and labour hours. Owned mine for 4 years now and what a cracking tow car it is. Another great review 👍.
Best honest review, I need something to use , while my credit is being sorted so I can get something modern. thank you
Thank you for your videos!
And finally, if you get one with the premium sound package fitted, buy a good head unit and prepare to get the fillings blown out of your teeth - it’s incredible.
1st gen sorento’s are so reliable and great off road
Just crashed myne in the ice and the full cars fucked can’t find another but loved her she will be missed
Truly look forward to these videos. Love you
Haha thanks for watching!
I have an 07 3.8 V6. Great car. Issues with the aerial as you said plus the transmission fluid needs changing often.
I looked at these as a cheap option before I got my 2010 XC90 for a bit more, good cars.
This is exactly why I bought my £500 03 Freelander - as a winter runabout but I like it so much I shall keep hold of it as it just went through its MOT no problem
Take propshaft off save a fortune in repairs and fuel
Many thanks another very good review.
Quite interested in going for a Kia as my next car.
Sorrento bit big for me , but the current model Sportage is a fantastic looking car.
In fact all the Kia's range are handsome cars.
Really appreciate if you took the Sportage for a run 😉
Just got my 17 sorento SXL. Fully loaded and I love it. Cant wait to throw some winter tires on it for next year! Winters in Wisconsin get brutal sometimes. The AWD should be better than my 08 335i rwd 😅😅
Boom! smashed it again..soooo much car for a grand!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, though I live in the US. I have a friend that looks like he's found me one of the same year!
I bought a cheap Kia Sorento, I loved it, driving it was like sitting in your favourite armchair..it was as old as that one but a 2.5 diesel. Then it died when the rear axle hanger snapped and tore the suspension off..it got wrote off.
How long did it last? I have 2006 model and no issues so far
Less than a year.
And your right about it been comfy to drive and it’s a cracking tow car as well 👍
Thank you for this video!!! How enjoyable you are!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I had a Kia years ago when they weren't well known and it was a nice car but...the fuel consumption was appalling. I swapped it for a BMW 520 because that did more mpg and proved cheaper to insure and run.
Another great vid, as Rich said, keep them coming, you need to buy more cars and possibly output 2 a day...…………...
Pass the evenings better that would
I'e owned both a Hyundai Elatntra 2.0 diesel on an 06 plate and an 05 kia People carrier one manual one auto both diesel.
Theyre great workhorses
Thanks for watching. lots more videos to come
Had. 2.5crdi version for 2 years, first year it cost a fair chunk in maintenance, but the second year it didn't cost a penny. Ran better than any other car we have had. Only sold it because the 4wd system stopped working and so was a bit useless for us. I'd have another though
I have a 2006 diesel Sorento 165500 miles on the clock. And it’s bloody brilliant.
Theyre great cars for the money
I had a 2.5 deisel a few years ago and put two engines into it.
They had a sump issue that starved the engine of oil.
injector rings perish, you get exhaust fumes blow by the injectors and get into the oil. over time the oil turns to sludge, and clogs the oil pickup in the sump.
Hey Matt. I’m a subscriber and a big fan and I learn a lot from your content. It’s invaluable to say the least and you’re an inspiration as we’re the same age. What advice would you give to someone wanting to start selling cars from
Home? I want to upscale as I’ve been selling cars from home for over a year now. I want to sell cars and get highest profits like a trade sale would as it comes with warranty etc. any advice you could give !
I have driven loads these when they was brand new I used to work at the distribution centre at killingholme were I used to valet them they do lean a lot on corners
Great video again hopefully you have some to keep us going through this virus!
Thanks for watching. I've got lots more videos coming
Kia/Hyundai have pulled it off. Nobody could have expected that
Another great video mate. Well done!
It's a very smart example. Good job! Being a Kia it should be relatively reliable, too. Great review of a REAL vehicle.
Thanks
Yeah, I'm on my second. They do like to rust......
But they're also a great tow car and reliable too.
Great review, I've now subscribed 👍
I agree! Thanks for subscribing
Watching this coz I'm just about to buy one for 2500
Mat,can you do top ten cars to buy in SUV.
Great stuff as always.
All the best ,from sunny Arizona, USofA
Kgoar.
Thanks! Are you locked down in AZ?
I need to buy like this car I like it so much
send to Yemen 😊
4x4 on a shoestring with all the extras why not. The grill would have to go. 😁
The grille has already gone! Hideous
Yes Hideous, good word for it.😄
