In Finland the main dealer wax oiled all Sorentos before they were sold to the first owner. Probably that's why mine has survived without excessive underside corrosion. Mine does also have rusted rear arches, but you can get repair kits for them for dirt cheap and they are easy to replace. By the way, it's a 5-speed auto because it has the tiptronic style gear lever.

This is so so nostalgic for me. My dad had one of these for 5 years, same year wheels and all but silver. 2.5 turbo diesel manual and had full cream interior. Massive fun, amazing on and off-road, decent MPG if you drive it a bit more daisy day to day, and it only had very few things go wrong with it. In the end it had to go as it had 180k miles on it and the rear subframe started to get holes in it. It was sold and used for another year before it wasn’t MOTd since 2018 and is probably sat in a field now as the scrap marker still hasn’t been fulfilled.

It was a game changer for anybody who towed a caravan, a horse box or a small yacht. You didn't need an old Land Rover tucked away for weekends. The Sorento could do it all and be the daily driver. The Sportage couldn't do that, and the early ones were a bit ugly. The Mk1 Sorento could tow 3500kg.

We had a 2004 Kia Sedona MPV for a few years, this was predominantly used for towing our caravan. For a solo drive it would be a lumpy old bus and cornered like the titanic around the iceberg but put a ton and half caravan on the back and the Sedona came into its own and cruise up steep hills like a freight train. A brilliant workhorse but eventually Hyundai offered us to much money to px it in for an IX35 to turn down. The VED cost was getting out of control too. I was very fond of that big old Korean car, it was so very dependable, powerful and comfortable. Everything we look for in a working car.

I agree with other comments that the first-gen Sorento is probably the car that gave Kia a massive credibility boost in the UK. When I was a kid we used to go caravanning, and these where everywhere at campsites. I thought for a Korean car they were pretty stylish, and I think they've aged well. Shame the same can't be said of the structural integrity! Reminds me of 1990s Fords.

All that rot could have been prevented by getting a hose under the sills and chassis on a regular basis, to wash off the salt. People don't wash their own car any more, so they don't give it the TLC to make it last.
The other moral of this tale is ALWAYS check out a car before buying if you are a private buyer. A two minute walk round of that and you walk away or offer the vendor scrap value.

Yes, that amount of corrosion hasn't occurred during the last twelve months surely. MOTs are a bit of a mystery. They've moaned about the tyres (particularly the o/s front inner tread very low) on my old Lexus two years running. I don't use it much, however I thought I'd get a second opinion as the front drivers side looks fine to me. The manager of the tyre retailer measured the tread on all four tyres and we agreed with the tester that the back ones are on 3mm, inner low, but he concluded that both the front ones were fine. All of this bearing in mind that they're in the business of selling tyres. 🤔.

This generation of Sorento was very popular in Greece. Some people still use them, despite the fact that they are quite old. Most of them are very dependable and all of them are rust free. I was socked by the amount of rust..

Greece is surrounded by salty water you would think they rust there too, maybe the climate is good.

I quite fancied one of these when they first came out, I wanted the diesel as I was doing about 25,000 miles a year at the time. The dealer offered me a drive in a v6 petrol and got quite annoyed when I said I’d prefer to drive the diesel version I actually wanted to buy.. we agreed to disagree and went on our separate ways!

It’s only 500 miles a week. 40 miles a day commuting to work 5 days a week and the rest zooming all over the country visiting family and friends. It soon adds up!

Had one of these which was a good car until somebody hit it, so it had to go. Had it for five yeras with no problems at all, a bit agricultural but very robust and reliable.

Watching this 8 months later, and here's the update:
18 March 2023 - 103,426 miles (126 miles after the walkaround). Pass with NO advisories
    13 April 2023 - last change of V5C
I'm assuming whoever bought it didn't like welding as much as their tester liked a good tip!

I'd always thought the worst ruster I'd ever encountered was the W210 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which can dissolve faster than a Berocca tablet, but where the Mercedes rusts for fun and puts it on full show, the Sorento takes its rusting SERIOUSLY, and hides it under relatively tidy bodywork.

Had an 08 plate that was a great tow car until it suffered the dreaded fuel tank delamination at 10 years old, Kia did fix it but it was never ever the same. Cut my losses and got rid.

I got rid of my XS to We Buy Any Car six years ago. I loved it, but at 160,000 miles the problems were stacking up. I had spent quite a lot on it in the previous two years so I kept it two years too long. I had it for eleven years.
