I have the utmost admiration for an individual who can talk as fluently, articulately and as knowledgably as long as Stewart does, and never ever become boring. How many of us could do that?
exactly what I thought: I can listen to whatever he has to say for hours no matter what, it never gets boring.
I bet he has a very high IQ!
Stewart expresses himself as well with words as he does with drumsticks.
One of the coolest, honest and best drummers in the world
The coolest!
I could listen to Copeland for hours. What a fascinating and highly intelligent personality.
Dude has enough serotonin for two people.
This interviewer has depth...yeah mon...yeah mon.
Stewart Copeland! Never boring, where does he get his energy?
wow, great honest talk about his dad's work. Great drummer and just a cool guy.
Indeed! Stewart is straight forward cool guy.
As a ten year old boy back in 1982, when he visited Chile with The Police, I thought they were from another planet. Since then my drumming style has changed ,he has been a big influence. What a great guy.
It's obvious why Stewart Copeland has become such a monumental figure in music-he understands it at such a fundamental level, and has a depth and breadth of stylistic experience and exposure that for him, the world is entirely open to him. He has seen clearly where for others-for most-it's cloudy at best and muddy at worst.
But he is also such a relatable and affable human being that he can connect to everyone around him to at least some extent.
Super-cool, super-funny, super-gifted - Stewart Copeland. Legend.
Good 90 minutes spent here. Cheers.
I love Stewart and I love ProgRock!
Wow. Just wow. I don't think I've ever had so much fun watching an interview with one of my favorite musicians ever! :) I heard the Police, and walking on the moon for the first time on an LP record back in 1982 as a 12 year old kid in Stings home town Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, Northern England and I was in love with the drums on walking on the moon ever since! Thank you Stuart, and THANK YOU who put this out on UA-cam!!
Created a new and beautiful style of drumming for rock. How often do you listen to a group and the drummer stands out!!! This is one of those musicians folks, a true innovator and originator. I can listen to him play all day!!!!
Amen!!!
Definitely a great, innovative drummer.
Stewart Copeland: Master Drummer & Very Creative.
Nightstone Master drummer??!??!? i don’t think so pal!!!!!!!!
I adore his music, BUT the guy is amazing ... he's one of my major influence, many thanx from France LACM.
He is the BILL WALTON of music and I love it.
Manzarek of Doors
I could listen to his stories all day...
My daughter and I loved playing Spyro. I played her Synchronicity I and she was amazed. ;)
What a GUY!!! Passionate, Talented, Innovative, ENTERTAINING, Educational, Unselfish, INSPIRING... xx SF
He is the best. Sincere and honest. And great.
When i was 10 learning to play guitar i learnt most of all the Police music as they seemed to be easy to learn on guitar. I always loved Stewart's attitude to music, life and of course his drumming... A Music Icon!
😲Forever Musical Weapons!
They Were Meant For Each Other!
THEY ARE JUST LIKE WINE!
THEY GET BETTER OVER TIME!

Love Stewart Copeland honest happy go lucky guy who just rocks.Respect
A true innovator and an inspiration.
Stewart is a Genius with drumsticks and a very sincere person!
Smart guy.
Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce to you...the Robbin Williams of Rock!!!
There's nobody like him in Rock n Roll. We love authenticity.
Well, I'm not a musician, I'm an audio producer, (but I'm not going to fuck off.)
This guy is awesome in every sense. Very comfortable in his skin, confident, smart, and basically changed drumming in his time. (And what did you do today?) :-)
He's great, but eventually all of us here now, and our succeeding generations will disappear and be forgotten. And eventually the human species will disappear entirely. Ultimately, nothing is very important beyond a given number of generations.
@@AthensGuitarLessons you must be fun at parties
Stewart rules!!
I love this. Great insights.
FANTASTIC video!! I could listen to Stewart talk for hours!! 🤘
The best drummer of century
That Ben Hur show really looks awesome I was able to catch some footage and if it comes this way I'm in!
a great man, a great musician!
Honest and in my top ten drummers
Great interview.
fantastic interview
he should have his own show
I’m just glad I was listening to the different take on drumming that Stewart was giving us in the 70’s & 80’s. And still now. Bands I played in in the 80’s & 90’s had people coming to listen. I’m hoping my influences in drumming contributed to that interest. What a wonderful wonderful man. Thanks Stewart. Glad I was alive at this time to hear and see you play
RUSH!
I was making noise in the kitchen during the first bit and I thought he said the band name was "Stark Naked McCarthyism" which actually is an even better band name.
26:39 He's talking about Eberhard Schoener. The Police are on his Video Magic album. Quite interesting.
What a great guy.
This is pretty much great stand-up comedy - love you Stew...
cant stop watching
The best drummer and most talented and very educational talker ... Unique sound for the drumming world.
What a great interview. I’ve always enjoyed Stuart’s drumming style and eloquence.
great
Its so infuriating when interviewers distract w attitude and give the impression they know all this already. Let someone else interview then!!!
Thank you for sharing your personal experiences. It's cool to see things from the inside!
Wow. I really like him a lot! (Always have since Klark Kent.)
What a cool guy.so interesting.best drummer ever
at 26:44 he makes me think of Regatta de blanc, the song. fantastic Stuart drumming also
He had the secret weapon - Arabic music.
Stewart is crazy here....... just rambling a bunch of crap ..... I love him!! He's just like me.
LOL
genius and virtuoso
I knew the Calgary Philharmonic tympanist, he was a great musician.
Man, this guy's got some balls. Dissing jazz in front of an audience of music students.
Lynn Turman No!! it’s called being pompous & arrogant!!!!!!
Butthurt Jazz fan
As Zappa said " Jazz music for the unemployed".
@@sticktrik Confident enough to call out indulgence and pretension.
@@iansummers6749 "pretension" is only a word that people accuse others of being when they are envious or jealous of them, yet no one really has any clear idea of what being "pretentious" actually is.
When I was 18 I drummed for my first touring band the cherryfire ashes. A Joy division/David Bowie type band. I've still acticely never heard that type of music I wasn't l into that type of music but they were the only gig in town. I. I ended up playing very stewart copeland esque because that was the closest thing I liked. The band was furious with me because I moonlighted for a punk/nirvana type band supporting snow patrol (they used to be heavy). On return from said gig I tried to hook up with my gf then (that was the only option or the gfs mini metro. . The band confronted me trousers by ankles in dank room where you could put hand through no the walls and there sat 50 green bottles of piss in the corridors. Loves young dream. The singers gf saw me and grassed me up I was told in no uncertain terms it was the band or I join nirvana type band. I just walked away. In reflection we sounded decent with copeland drumming but I still don't like British indie music. 😅
Great talent and hot.
As someone who understands Jazz and doesn't like jazz players I respect Stewart so much. I also respect jazz players, just don't like them.
I think he was joking
@Doug Kirk jazz jams typically use books containing only the melody and it’s accompanying chord names, written with - and + to indicate chord quality, followed by a number for inversion/interval, but even without any music to look at, there’s always rhythmic grooves to follow.
Only Stewart Copeland? If You know what I mean? Very Talented! In SO MAY Ways... 🥁
Curious statement that a musician can enjoy playing a type of music that they don't enjoy listening to. I've never played an instrument but I always thought that those who do, when they are listening to music, that they just subconsciously imagine themselves playing it, or at least are more aware of what it is calling for in terms of skill and effort on the part of the person who is playing it.
I know. Right? My theory is that he’s just not had very many positive experiences with actual real jazz jamming, maybe just tolerating one or a few loud, and annoying jazz guitarists. Maybe he is hoping more jazz musicians will challenge his bias to evolve.
only 36k views?
unreal
jazz is more fun to play than it is to listen to. It's kinda like soccer, it's way more fun to play it than it is to watch it. lol
Ya mon
27:15 "Fucking punk band...I'm Jazz......Jazzzzzzzz" LMAO
+MrJohnnyfarragut "HHHUUuuuUUUEeeeHHHHHHH!!" hahahahahaha.
Why did Stewart look like Dorothy from Golden Girls in the thumbnail for this video? 🤔
(I love Stewart Copeland). ❤
Same hairstyle he had in 1980
Stewart, in Lebanon did you experience any Levantine Rock and roll bands?
Couldn’t have been the Super Bowl on October 23 1978, in all likelihood it was the World Series .
Exactly that kind of conflict with Sting he describes is the source of great creativity. See Lennon/McCartney, Moulding/Partidge, Godley+Creme/Steward+Goldman, Jagger/Richards.
"How did we get onto Pygmies?"
Could that crowd have been any less enthusiastic? One of the greatest drummers of all time on stage and that was the response?
When was this lecture?
the interviewer's depth is a bit too narrow for Stewart's life experiences and knowledge. I would've wanted him to delve in a bit more on many of the topics where the interviewer just moved on...
Close your eyes and it sounds like Hermes Conrad from Futurama is interviewing him.
He could have been a great stand UP comedia. Really. The Yieeeeei jaazz!!! 😅
1:27:41 that snare was made by Pearl.
that wall has gotta be about the worse brick work ever ...just saying
bluegoose555 it’s shitty wallpaper 😂
laid by musicians
It's funky and kick-back, because that's like the music world, man.
The Who were still sticking to their guns through it all ; )
Pygmies are GREAT!
why is the audio so quiet?
stewart copeland is the shit!!
So Whiplash isn't worth watching? Stewart is my new fav musician!
8:46 LMAOOOO
Hey Doc where's Sting?
Stewart says he's good friends with RUSH. I can see him and Neil Peart hanging out. Both very intellectual guys, but Stewart is an extrovert and Neil is an introvert. They're kind of both sides of the same coin.. both great drummers, but very different styles.
Stewart’s an introvert as well as an extrovert. We all have an introversion/extroversion cycle. Astrologically speaking, it takes fourteen years for a Saturn cycle to go from one to the other. Since his time of birth is unknown, it cannot be calculated, which is a tragedy because it would help him know himself better. You could be right though, he may be in an extrovert phase nowadays.
Stuart Copeland is a treasure and so far as drumming and storytelling, but I disagree on one Wishbone Ash was certainly not a lame band
With three guitars, they were pretty damn good, especially English lore rock
There was no superbowl on that date.
Evil Edna's horror toilet, and gay bikers on acid. I'm dead XD
Gaye Bykers On Acid are still gigging!
Wonder how he sounds on speed........
Is he talkin about Klark Kent? Where?
He's an extremely hyper personality
tiluriso Must be that coke & coffee
Imagine thinking everything is artificial - typical American
Jazz musicians are often called to play on rock n pop albums..cause they are special....Stewart is great in certain areas..and he says he sucks at recording sessions...hes great with police otherwise..?
Often? Not really
He actually envies jazz musicians!!! Notice how he disclaimed his previous statement "jazz, the refuge of the talent-less" by saying after that, that there's not one jazz musician he doesn't get along with, and I'll bet you that is because he doesn't like the fame of being a rock star drummer!!! I think he is trying to use reverse psychology to see about getting himself more opportunity with actual jazz musicians who can challenge his bias and be eager to give him a good jazz experience!
Sick mind!
He could play any gender but he does not like jazz .. tnx God!
@@manuelazacchetti4726 that’s because he wants one jazz musician out there to challenge his opinion.
@@manuelazacchetti4726 it’s his way of flirting with who he most wants to play with…jazz musicians of the ear, like him.
🌚
Can I say WHEN do you come from?!!
I think that any jazzist would be honoured to jam with Copeland and enjoy his poliphonic frantic sound!!
@@manuelazacchetti4726 did you mean: WHERE ?
Copeland : (speaks for ten minutes)
Host: great mon listen mon ...
Copeland: (speaks for ten minutes)
And so on.
I disagree w/ his assessment that '90% of Jazz is shit and 90% of Blues and Reggae is great.' There's good and bad in every genre, and its' not up to a certain 'percentage'. Also beg to differ that machines do dance stuff better than humans. I mean there was great, lascivious, sexy, dance music way before the invention of 'electronic pulse'. And by the way he makes reference to the movie 'Whiplash' - he's about the first pro musician who says he enjoyed and found it believable. But from the fact that he 'loved it', I can see why he has said he 'hates Jazz'. - that shit probably happened to him!
Yes there's good and bad; jazz is 90% bad. Or 99.99%
@@LeeGee Completely disagree. If you think that , and I quote '99.99% of jazz is bad', then you're clearly not a Jazz fan, meaning you have no palate for it. Because it is not even an informed opinion. There's plenty of great jazz out there, for all tastes. .Stewart is like that as well, always was, Sting has corroborated that one more than on occasion. You cats are like guys who have no plate for any type of sushi saying '99.99% of sushi sucks'. It does not. It is you -and Stewart - who have no palate for it. Own it. It would be more honest.
I was a fan of Curved Air before you.
Finding out your father was a fan of assassination was disappointing.
Let's hope your father is perfect
@@LeeGee
Are you a moron? My father was far from perfect but I know for a fact that he did not favor or pursue murder for political ends, or any ends for that matter.
If you are commenting on the sins of the father not being those of the son, then a little shame for it might say something.
