wow just found this, i joined RNR in 1988 until 1996, at H.M.S. Cambria, before emmigrating to Canada. Best years of my life great crew, made great friends, was a sad day when they took our boat away. miss the sea time, wonderful experience.
I served in the RNR S Wales division in the early 1980's and had some great times on this ship, including summer exercises which took us to Lorient and Pembroke Dock. Sadly had to leave when my work took me away from Cardiff.
I was on HMS Spey around 1987 - 1989 from what was HMS Claverhouse in Granton. Although I joined the RAF (as a regular) I still remember those days, even after almost 30 years.
Wow just found this. On HMS Dovey from its commissioning. Did Maple haul 1985.. Joined Clyde division 1983-1992 Dad was Chief of boat on the first leg across the pond. Helford boggy boat
Served mainly on Helmsdale and Spey with trips on Dovey, Helford and Orwell. Fine times. I remember the MCM10 shown in this video. He went balistic when one of our OD muppets chucked the man-overboard dummy into the Forth without a lifejacket. It sank like a stone.
It was 1986. The bad weather referred to by mcm 10 was end of May 1986. I was on hms itchen and we lost 75% of the sweep gear. The RNR at the time was like the curates egg...elements of being professional but quite a lot of incomplete training did make sea time difficult. The river class were built on the cheap and bobbed around like a cork. Happy days
@@markosborne8784 . Yes I was in the RNR ..in May 1986 "Springtrain" we lost most of the stuff off the sweep deck..eg floats , kites etc. Which meant we could not take part in the sweeping exercise off Gib. I'm fairly sure that was not in shore.
Blimey! Our buffer was far more polite about morning shake. Just a modest call down the hatch. (Not too welcome after an hour or so's sleep having been on watch up top.)
I'm not entirely sure. My father thinks it was between 84 and 88 (he's in it), and the music at the beginning is Dire Straits - Telegraph Road which was released in 82 so it was definitely after that.
It must have been at least 1986, probably 1987, as HMS Ribble ( 31:00 ) was not commissioned until February 1986. Cdr Simon (not Sam) Mccaskill became MCM10 in July 1985, and did indeed have a fearsome reputation. Unfortunately he was murdered in 1998, though that was nothing to do with his Naval career. LtCdr Attenborough was CO of HMS Waveney when she went to Canada in Exercise Maplehaul in the Summer of 1985. Thanks so much for posting this, I don't know how I missed it first time round, but it takes me back 30 years.

Mark Adams MCM10 was RNR. How on earth did you lose your sweep gear?
You was inshore if I am not mistaken.
