My favourite film, my two favourite commentators, another excellent ramble lads
25 minutes in, and it's already better than the previous Alien commentary with Duncan and the unspeakable one.
What's the problem with oliver then?
I agree, although the Jaws Series Commentaries that the guys did there were the best thing to ever happen to UA-cam. I am kicking myself for not saving those before they got pulled out. Those were lighting in a bottle, comedy gold !!
New vid from Val Verde that's my night sorted.
For the record: Yes, Alien: Director's Cut is actually 1 minute shorter than the theatrical cut.
It was really only assembled because Fox wanted to be able to advertise that all four movies in the Quadrilogy box set had alternate versions, so Ridley Scott, who's still perfectly happy with the film as released in 1979, decided to turn his "Director's Cut" into an editing experiment, trimming the movie and splicing in some of the more famous deleted scenes, like
Ripley finding Goopy Dallas and Brett's corpse.
Yes. I saw Director's Cut at the cinema in 2003 and was lucky to see the Theatrical a few weeks ago for the 40th Anniversary release :)
I prefer the Theatrical Cut.
Duncan should have done the whole commentary in his Ridley Scott impression.
They did but then he lit a fat cigar and burned the hard drive down.
Conan with an Arnie impression all the way through or The Dark Knight or any film starring Michael Caine with a Michael Caine all the way through

Well done boys, keep them coming , I love a commentary or 7
Ridley Diddley
I know most people favour the sequel but I prefer the atmosphere and suspense of Alien over the action of Aliens.
Aliens was my favourite growing up but now I’m older I much prefer the slow burn of this one.
Ram Attack feel better now?
Clearly you care enough to take the time to comment on my comment :)
But since when did offering comments on a comment board become cause for vitriolic attack?
Oh yeah, since the interest was invented.
It’s ok, though, I don’t mind your comment, it gave me a chuckle.
No, I exaggerate, it was more of a involuntary body spasm.
But I appreciate your comment.
No, that was a lie as well.
As you can tell, i’m not very good as this passive aggressive stuff. I think in future I’ll leave it to people like you.
Agreed, I lean more towards _Alien_ for its atmosphere and suspense. I also love how it's set entirely on this one spaceship with a crew of seven.
That was great, thank you. Viva Val Verde!
Alien just might be my favorite film...next to Alien 3. Looking forward to that commentary as well!
The audiobooks are on UA-cam.
The ones for 1 and 3 are fantastic.
I don't like the idea that the Alien is killing people in the original.
I know the way the theatrical movie is cut simplifies/censors things down to that, but the deleted scenes and surrounding material all clearly explain that it only kills Parker in self-defence, and Lambert out of a fascination with the fact that she's female.
The alien 'kidnaps' Brett and Dallas to turn them into new eggs, as part of the originally-conceived lifecycle whereby it only lives around 20 hours and in that time has to mate by transforming other creatures.
This is the best film in an oft-disrepected genre (sci-fi horror), but who cares? I respect it.
1:52:00 This film never makes it clear that xenomorphs bleed acid, only that facehuggers do. Presumably Cameron made assumptions for the sequel.
Please do commentaries for the next 3 Alien films.
Damn it Richard Jackson, I had your weird Ash impression in my head at work all day at work!

I watched alongside the movie right to the end, it kept me very entertained
Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) is the Navigator. Kane (John Hurt) was the Executive Officer/2nd in command, Ripley the main pilot, or Flight Officer.
OMG Yes! Please do an audio commentary on the whole Alien Predator series! I miss your voice impressions Duncan!
Thanks for the Commentary Gentlemen
I now demand an edit of Alien with a barely disguised Robot walking around on the ship. Call 'Jim Nottabott". Fantastic work guys, and that's some fine pill popping from Richard Jackson.
This has to be one of the best commentaries I’ve listened too cracking up in pure laugher 🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Hello my baby, hello my darling, hello my rags on gal"......oops, wrong Alien appearance
Oh no! Not again!!
Use the Schwartz!!!
Whenever the Ash magazine scene plays, my attention is drawn instantly to the poster of fried eggs in the background. Disappointed that you didn’t mention it. :)
The one single effect shot I don't like in this is the "clearly a man in a suit" shot when the alien is hanging out the airlock.
Reading all the contemporary interviews and design notes for Alien meant that I could never enjoy something like Prometheus. The latter film completely missed the point and overwrote so many great ideas that were built into the former.
A very jarring example is with the derelict ship. In Alien, what we're seeing is the desiccated skeleton of the integrated ship and pilot creature. Something that in life would have been coated in layers of living tissue and vibrant colours. What Prometheus did with the ship was like if Jurassic Park had featured animated dinosaur skeletons, instead of living dinosaurs. I think that bothered me even more than the retcon of having the pilot's outward appearance being some kind of flight suit.
"Harry Dean Stanton always looked like a... haunted tree."
A+
Great commentary
Great commentary.
When you read the book of Alien, you realise how Aliens took a shit on the original story.
If you read the books, Aliens makes no sense at all with regards to the biology of the xenomorphs.
Favourite movie and my favourite internet people. NICE.
It's quite funny that Duncan talks about the Germanic 'ei' and 'ie' for so long and yet the name of the man in question is 'Giger'...
A very good point! - D -
Now you’ve done Alien...I hope you get round to doing Saturn 3? Please.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Richard is doing what I do when I watch alien now, point out the similaritys with alien isolation, it's the closest thing to the experience of a movie I've ever played in a game, maybe of any movie game.

Emperor Palpatine Surgical Reconstruction Center xD
My favourite part is that Vader has 2 use th force 2 move. Or something along those lines
The history of Alien is fascinating. Dan O'Bannon wrote a low budget space movie about Blue-Collar grunts, called Dark Star. This was before Star Wars, and was actually a spoof of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's also John Carpenter's Directorial Debut. After that, O'Bannon decided he wanted to explore the same world, but in a serious way. As such he wrote a script which he intended to direct, another low-budget space movie. Then he was approached by writer Ron Shushet, who'd liked Dark Star, and was trying to develop an adaptation of Phillip K Dick's We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, which he'd bought the screen rights to. He persuaded O'Bannon to co-write. In time, realising that getting funding for Wholesale would be difficult, they decided to produce O'Bannon's space movie first, as it was cheaper, due to it's small interior locations. This was Starbeast. That film almost happened as a Roger Corman Quickie B-Movie, when a friend persuaded O'Bannon to offer it to the major studios to see if he could get more money. Pitched rather neatly as 'Jaws In Space', it paid off, as Fox bought it. Still nothing then happened on the film for some time.
Well, what happened was after Star Wars was an unexpected hit, Fox desperately looked to get another Sci-Fi film into production. And the only completed script they had was Starbeast. Because Fox now wanted to put money into it, O'Bannon was no longer allowed to direct. Walter Hill, who was producing, was to have stepped into the director's chair, however he was already committed to The Warriors. Hill would never actually direct an Alien movie (will he ever?), but he did direct spaceship movie, Supernova (2000). Described as Hellraiser In Space, and featuring artwork by H.R. Geiger, it is however pretty awful, and Hill took a pseudonym rather than be credited.
O'Bannon and Shushet's script of Wholesale, now named Total Recall, would eventually pop back up, under the direction of David Cronenberg, no less. However he had a falling out with the writers and left.
In 1987 Bruce Beresford was about to start shooting the movie. However that ran out of money after sets had been built, with Patrick Swayze as Quaid. Arnie subsequently had his mates at Carolco buy the project, and the perfect marriage of the writers of Alien and the director of Robocop (and the star of The Terminator) occurred.
There are noticeable similarities to Alien, and the Blue Collar workers on a spaceship just going about their everyday jobs and leisure, in Red Dwarf. Along with the lived in, industrial structures of the ship. But Dark Star was actually the main influence on RD and the radio prog, Dave Hollins, Space Cadet, that proceeded it. Certainly the humour and space bum setup.
Alien 3 is probably the closest to Red Dwarf, with it's abundance of English accented characters and actors from UK TV, in that setting. Although Aliens: Special Edition, does feature Mac McDonald (Capt Hollister from RD).
1:09:53 the birth of a Val Verde legend 🥛 🤖
Deep Purple released a song called 'Space Truckin' in 1972. Apparently it was considered a bit daft at the time, but 7 years later...who knew?!
HR GOOOGAR its the correct pronunciation, well done x
Hey guys, I do not know if u hav noticed when watching Alien 3, maybe u hav and I'm behind everyone. But whenever u see lice in that film, it has something to do with th alien, either its nearby or its th 1 in Ripley and ox/dog. Don't know wht it means or if its intensional but there seems 2 be a connection 2 me.
Duncan is so right Midnight Run is so good!!!! Future episode please .
That out-of-place music during the acid drop is from another film called 'Freud' I think...
Yes, correct. Editor Terry Rawlings made a temp track using old Jerry Goldsmith scores. When Jerry came on board and composed the complete score, Terry and Ridley actually preferred some of the tracks they'd used before. So they used some stuff from the Freud movie score, plus some other stuff.
If Jerry were alive, he would hate me for what I am about to say. I frankly preferred the use of his "Freud" music instead of his original material. I felt that the scenes where it was used was more intense with it.
This is going to be great. Can never quite decide my favourite out of Alien and Aliens - probably lean slightly more toward Alien. Hope this commentary doesn't devolve into endless fart noises like they normally does around the final third or so as Duncan gets a bit fidgety. (I shouldn't complain though as they're providing these for free - thanks lads!!)
"Endless" seems a tad hyperbolic.
I like them both, but Aliens gets the slight advantage for one reason: Bill Paxton.
@@GamerGuysReviews Don't forget Michael Biehn! Fuckin love that guy.
1:36:50 best laugh I've heard on this yet.
In Space, no one can here you use the latrine!
1:16:50 I've heard it described as a 'Tooth rod' if that helps.
This film was the first Blu Ray i bought and man it is juddery on the pans.
Is your TV in "game" mode? Have you tried disabling TruMotion if you have it?
@@GamerWho No, it's a Samsung but motionplus is off and no game mode, the bluray player has a 24fps playback mode too which I have activated but it's still juddery on the pans. Not unwatchable but irritating.
Speaking of Dan O'Bannon, I eagerly await the review or commentary on his magnum opus: The Return of the Living Dead, extra brownie points if y'all do the bonkers space-vampire flick he co-wrote: Lifeforce.
Return of the Living Dead? Now THATs a fantastic movie!!
nice
Would like for Duncan to do commentaries of Bond movies
live and let die=yaphet kotto
OMG Please do a Blade Runner 2049 commentary. PLZ.
Alien rankings [IMHO], feel free to disagree:
Aliens-builds on the original [developing the Alien and Ripley] and ramps up the action.
Alien-Horror Classic, pure and simple
Alien Covenant -plenty of issues, but does interesting things with David and I liked Daniels
Prometheus-visually stunning but falls down due to Damon Lindelöf's mystery box writing and deviating from the superior Alien: Engineers concept.
Alien 3-Sigourney is brilliant, but overrides the end of Alien's rather than building on it
Alien Resurrection-Messy result of a director aiming for horror and a writer aiming for campy fun. Alien-Ripley Hybrid is a bit of a gimmick.
Alien vs Predator: Yuck
Aliens vs Predator-Requiem: Double Yuck
couldn't agree with Richard more about Prometheous script. It just sucks and Ridley just seems unaware or was this his vision all along or what?
I want to be Yaphet Kotto when I grow up
To me, it’s wrong to find Sigourney Weaver attractive. She’s too respectable for lowlives like me to fancy her. Fancying her would feel like fancying your best friend’s mum, or an English teacher
When you're a kid, there's always one friend's Mum who's a bit tasty, and I knew people who fancied teachers. Actually in the film Tadpole, Sigourney Weaver's teen stepson has a crush on her.
Yeah the original version is longer than the directors cut which must be a first. I'm looking forward to watching the new documentary; Memory-The Origins of Alien. Not sure when that's out but I've heard good things about it. Also Alien is my favourite movie so this commentary better be good or I'll unsub and go resub to the other guys dull channel.
1:19:13 - 1:30:21
My favourite part of this whole commentary is this 11 minute stretch where in between short little bits of analysis of the film is "MY MOTHER WAS A-- *FISH*"
Just do Return of the living dead ! The Milwaukee guys will understand !
A lot of the time, theatrical cuts are superior to the director’s or extended cuts, there’s only a handful of films that benefit from a director’s cut.
+floyd75dylan
What? The only director's cut I can think of that is inferior to the theatrical cut is Payback.
The paenis brought me here
Technically, the Fox logo should now be replaced by the Disney logo
As far as I know Fox isn't going away. Disney will keep them as it's own brand, as they did when they owned Miramax. There's worth in keeping the brand, and it allows them to produce R-rated and more adult natured films, as with Touchstone and also Hollywood Pictures. The only ones I can see losing the logo are X-Men, Fantastic Four, and A New Hope. But that's just to bring them into continuity with the Disney Marvel and Star Wars properties.
It is a bit annoying as the 20th Century Fox theme is usually the first track on SW soundtracks and has been played by John Williams ahead of his score in concerts. For those who grew up on it, it would be nice if they could release Episodes 1-6 with the Fox logo and fanfare at the beginning.
Mr. Jackson, please do be honest. Did you and Ollie stage a falling-out so you could follow through with your request on the Robocop commentary? Did you just want to make up again so he could say "Looks like we're gonna friends after all, Richard."
@Ewan Callister Dammit, that's fucking heart-breaking! I mean they were clearly friends.
What an ssshollie. I’m glad I canceled my Patreon.
@Ewan Callister Maybe Richard and Duncan asked Oliver to remove them? going from what Richard said in the comments to the Batman episode last week i think he'll be happy they are removed, also None of us know anything about what happened between them, its speculation
@Ewan Callister I dunno, maybe he removed them because they werent generating views anymore? who knows?Reviews and podcasts on new movies have a small window to generate views.
It’s all a bit shady. I suspect Harper met an Iago in Robin Block, n told him to ditch ‘the other two.’ Thing is, Richard n Duncan were the humour behind the old commentaries n stuff, n I always found Oliver reminded me of the square kid at school that wussed out at every opportunity n went ‘come on guys let’s stop now, we’re gonna get caught n told off...’
So I’m pleased they jettisoned from Oliver ‘everything delivered in 10 clock newsreader voice’ Harper.
Hey Rich/Duncan, you mentioned that Goldsmith’s music was odd at one point, if you didn’t know (you might already do) but a majority of the film uses temp music from other films Goldsmith scored, a lot of the music he made for the film wasn’t used unfortunately which is why at times it feels out of place, ua-cam.com/video/bAzIV27sr40/v-deo.html cool little documentary about it here if you were interested
Controversial opinion, Alien was great for its time but if Aliens (1986) didn't exist it wouldn't be talked about as much in 2019
(Production design excluded)
Definitely true that the franchise is still going due to the sequel.
