GENIUS OR GARBAGE? Specialty Live Shrimp Holder Hooks!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- I found these bizarre hooks recently and I knew I just HAD to try them! These are Live Shrimp Holder Hooks. Supposedly, they cradle the live shrimp on the hook rather than piercing it so it will stay alive longer while fishing. Let’s see if this crazy invention is genius and catches me tons of dinner fish, or if it’s complete garbage.
Erin is sick this week, so I’m off fishing with my Dad instead! We want to target trout that we can cook up for dinner tonight. It’s a little grey and gloomy out, but that won’t stop us from going out and having a good time!
Please remember, that these are my opinions based on my experience. Just because a product didn’t work well for me doesn’t mean it won’t work well for you. Has anyone used these hooks before? How did they work out for you? Is there a secret tip or trick that I’m missing? Let me know in the comments below!

There is some tackle that catches fish, and some catches anglers .. 😂
Lol it caught me this time
@@HeySkipper happens to the very best of us ..
Gooood ♥️ 🇩🇿 🐟 liké
I wonder how a J hook and a rubber band would do. Like Richard Gene hooks his crawfish
I would rather not throw plastic or rubber into the water, maybe thread would be a better alternative
I second this comment. I say alittle rubber band. Wont hurt anything.. they hold so well you wont lose many rubber bands if any.
Plus second thought.. people use rubber o rings on senkos all the time.
Suppose to set the hook instead of reeling like circle hook?
Tried many different ways with many missed fish! Perhaps it’s just the editing that made it seems just one way
By the time you reel In all of the slack, you have no time to set the hook!
@@HeySkipper It seems like the point of the hook lies along the body of the shrimp. Maybe if the hook point was bending lower and fully exposed it would work better. Cuz it seems like the fish would eat the shrimp but when you reel, the hook point is flush against the shrimp.
Hey Skipper , I only use circle hooks when fishing , the problem with the test hooks is that the gap is to narrow and the hook in general has a thick gauge , if the hook is thinner and wider then it will be a more successful product in the specified application it is used for .
I have some of these hooks. I bought my first one in Basspro about ten years ago. They really are good for the shrimp, although they are heavier than a circle hook that I would regularly use. I have found that the hooks do tend to rust quite quickly.
If the hooks faced up, I think it would be more effective
Seems like lots of people agree with that
I have used these hooks since the 9 ties. They do spare the shrimp from being pierced, but do not provide a good hook set due to the way the hooks are positioned alongside the body. Though they are beneficial when a weedless set up is needed in cover.
It’s not popular in Texas
Abraham Ramirez I wouldn’t say it’s “popular” anywhere. This is the first I’ve ever seen these. I would venture to say that it would only be popular with people who don’t want to “hurt” the shrimp (even if they are feeding alive to fish...)
Yeah... thats my thought exactly.
This is still one of my favourite channels, you two are great!!!!
🎣😎🇬🇧
To get the same effect you could take a circle hook and rubber band (small one). Especially since you aren’t casting far, when I was stationed in Florida someone told me that to keep the shrimp lively and to open the bail. Just close the bail and let the fish hook itself. Do 1 or 2 twists and the shrimp won’t get off when you cast
yep. I thought about that, too but haven't tried it yet. My only questions are will it squeeze the shrimp and how many bands will you need to hold it on good.
Can you bend them out like frog fishing hooks for bass so it catches their lip more?
WHAT?!!! I'm from Texas and I for one do not use those when at the bays fishing.
Same here! I've never seen this silly thing until now. Did he just disrespect us Texas anglers?!
@@redbirdsjunkie I think he did, I'm used to using kahl hooks for trout fishing. Least I know that when using a popping cork you are supposed to you know pop it. In the video they just mostly let it sit there lol.
Lolol
@@HeySkipper I'm just teasing you. I love your videos, and I do love when you bring these wacky fishing things out.
Texas born and raised and have been fishing the gulf for about 10 years and I've never seen anyone use those hooks.
I live in Texas and I have never seen that hook or would I ever use it. Circle hooks all day!
Just freaking lift never seen it either!
I like to watch Your videos when you show new things for fishing, I congratulate you on your scarring by sharing these kinds of ideas to help us make better fishing
Thank you so much for tuning in:) we will try and put out more of those videos for you:)
Great video, it can’t hurt to experiment, I think the fish are feeling those two big hooks and spitting them out right away,
the circle hooks are the best, they don’t feel the Sharp point of the circle hook until it’s too late.
To keep the shrimp alive I always hook the shrimp in the head near the horn in front of the brain - be careful not to hook the brain, they stay alive and move around naturally...
you have a great channel and inspired me to continue to make videos for my channel although I have very little subscribers, hopefully going down south to Florida in a couple of weeks I’ll be using live shrimp and lures.
Thanks again for the motivation, keep up the good work....
Tight Lines from Captain Walt
THE FISHING CHANNEL NE FISHING ABC - Nice comment, and good advice
Hey Walt! Thanks for chiming in. I like your theory. It makes sense to me. I think I will stick to circle hooks like you said.
That’s a great way to keep shrimp alive!
I’m happy to motivate you, keep on grinding my friend!
Hey Skipper thank you bro !
I wonder if buying a pack of the small rubber bands from the dollar store and using them to attach a shrimp to a hook would work? The small ones in the hair section.
Love your videos. Love your focus on teaching others. Love Erin’s (spelled it right?) kindness and how humble she is. Great job guys.
Spelled it right! (Good job, not many people do!) Thanks for all the love and support. We appreciate hearing what you love about the channel because we want to make more videos for you to enjoy. Hope you liked this one!
Used before on artificial shrimp tails. Nothing to write home about. One issue though...... Never put you finger into gill plate / gills. Good way to kill and get stuck with an under sized fish.
I sent you guys a comment earlier but I totally forgot to mention the little rubber bands that kids get for their braces those little guys and all the assortment of colors are amazing for exactly what the purpose of that get up is on that shrimp also if you get on and put them around fiddler crabs and just run the hook through not only does the sheep head get irritated in and of inhaling it I promise it will up your hookups probably double and save you a lot of bait because as you probably already know those gators inhale them bad boys.... And of course you can adjust the size of those rubber bands to debate you are using such as live small blue crabs it also helps when using barnacles you can get larger rubber bands and wrap them around several times instead of having two tied them on and like I said when The sheeps or the drum try to pull and it keeps springing back they get irritated and absolutely smash Good luck try it out
You were using a cheap brand shrimp hook, the one the works great has a needle on it that pines the shrimp to the kook. they can be found on ebay. Works Good for Me.
Motivated and good information and single hook best choice for live shrimp. 👍
Stick with what works bro
If small fish on bites you definitely need a pool of shrimps ... when it comes to drag setting i always set it tight as possible but not over reach my hook breaking point.
Love the idea of these hooks
What are they called and where did you buy them from please
I'm 43 years old when I was eight my dad had us using these at the coast fishing off copano Pier. We catch some huge specs back in the day
Too much time . I just hook on the Shirmp tail , when that shrimp 🦐 land in the water they done . Free line working pretty good too
Free line doesn’t get my shrimp deep enough at this particular spot! But I love that method! P
I love this. Your creative videos are awesome. Fished with live shrimp for years mostly with treble hooks. Works great for sheepshead. I think that hook doesn’t fully allow the shrimp to be eaten. I wouldn’t use them. It’s not perfected yet besides you can easily put a hook in a shrimp w/o killing it. Your test was definitive. Reminds me of the hook setup on some plastics I’ve used for bass esp. frogs lures etc. Love this test and the circle hook is much better. Suggestion, I want you to do another vintage spinning reel video. I love those. Keep up the great work! You know - so much new fishing tackle is geared for the mind of the fisherman not the mouth of the fish.
Christopher Jenkins ✌️✌️✌️
Hey Chris! Thank you so much for being a part of our community and sharing your insight.
I will happily make more videos with my vintage gear! Thanks for your suggestion,
Have a happy day,

For me, the best hook for live shrimp is the wide gap passed through its horn. Sometimes I used a second hook with circle hook, like the ones used with jig. I tied it up on wide gap curve. It´s really works for snook, and fishes from cost.
What a beautiful life. Fishing is my passion.
:) mine too
Im sure anything you do will work! With your and your dads knowledge passed down for years you are my go to for fishing advice brother!
I saw these hooks years ago but have problems finding them. And you guys know where you can buy them.
haha i love that you try all the gadgets out..my favourite was from some time ago when you tried casting with that wrist mounted reel thingamajig!! by the way whats that red color 4000 size reel you were using bro? Ci4?
Ci4!
@@HeySkipper awesome..the handle knob threw me off haha.
Those hooks are old school. I used to use them in the 80's.
I've used this and had no success with it. The fish would take everything but the head of the shrimp
Everytime!
I cant find these anymore. Where did you find it?
Those shrimp look good making me hungry forget the fish.
Lolol, feeding fish potential dinner for myself
Where did you find these I used these all the time growing up.
I found it on amazon.com
The idea looks good you should design something like it. Greetings from Honduras 🇭🇳🐟🍻✌
Nice idea but... if you got a bag of hair tie rubber bands you could strap a single hook on the underside. Maybe put the bow of the hook under the thorax and eye towards the tail so it swims like a shrimp?
Just a single hook next time. No need for this gimmick hook for me
Shrimp is my favorite bait when fishing for barramundi fish, I think the type of hook like that is less effective because it takes too long to set the bait, and the size of the bait should also match the size of the hook. different from the usual way, just plug the hook into the shrimp tail, finished. one hook can be used for various sizes of shrimp. greetings from Indonesian fishing vlogger.
Love the channel I learn so much from it
Happy that you can learn a thing or two:)
I have fished with them it does keep the shrimp lively for a long time mine would do loops out of the water when trout would chase them.
you are Good teacher thank for information
Nice job
That is a great spot; Launch the kayak from there... stick with the circle hook.
I will next time!
Hey, what a great catch, Greetings from Norway!
Yeet yeet
Love the videos? are you doing any cache and cook
Soon!
Thx for nice vidoes..
Awesome video bro. The shrimp hooks look cool but after watching you and your pops miss a couple bites man, I’m def not buying that hook. I love the video, very informative, very simple fishing and proves my theory “if it ain’t broken, then don’t go trying to fix it”. Gotta stick with what you know best, good ol circle hook got the job done. 👍🏻 Thanks for the video. Btw placing a order right now on your site.
I’m so upset because I had high hopes
From what I understand I wouldn't try using that in Florida; it's considered a " multiple hook". Can't be doing that with live/organic bait.
Can't wait till next vlog
Try to modify the hook. Bend the point that clips the head to the other side and rotate the rubber also. The two hook tips should be away from the shrimp. What do you think?
Amazing...
👍👍👍
Some people say putting the hook on from the bottom of the shrimp with the hooks up works better.
Yeah. You're using it right. It's just that those springs suck. I think the only way to loose less fish is to let them just take the bait and set itself. That MIGHT work better.
I wound try it !! Like the idea but we can't be losing shrimp alot $$ -
hmmmm with livebaiting i think simples just the best plus circle hooks i prefer especially if the fish ends up being just a bit under the legal size
I think circle hook works just fine!
Nice video. That hook might work for Red Fish.
Probably better for reds than the trout
I live in Texas and I don't use any of that stuff it's pretty weird to me we use J Hooks and circle hooks but that's not anything like it
take a elastic and put the shrimp one without any damage!
Thanks for the tip 👍🏼👍🏼
You are very welcome!
Great thought!
👍
Never tried it,but looking at it, it seems that the hooks lay to flat against the body of the shrimp ,., which leaves no point to penetrate the fish and the hooks just slide out... It may work if the hooks were bent up to a horizontal plane where the hooks protrude outward above the shrimp...
Yea... good idea. Poor execution
You could try to flip the little plastic holder the other way,so the hooks would point outwards. Still, good ol' circle hook is way better
I bought a couple of those at HEB grocery here Texas, I couldn't keep the shrimp on the hook. They came loose in the water.
Yea... not gonna get them again.
interestinng but how do they handle on big casts as you only cast few feet in front of you and you use a float let alone the prawns have to be a certin size to fit thats a hard ask when you have lots of big bait
Sounds like a good idea! But nothing beats a tried and true method. If it isn’t broke🤷🏻 lol
Circle hook is usually the way to go for me 👍🏼👍🏼 glad I tried it so now I know
It's kinda clear why it doesn't work. Hook points should almost always be exposed when fishing. Now seeing that the hook points run parallel with the body of the shrimp, it almost makes it impossible to set the hook.
what size of hook are you using
2/0 circles
You should put colored zip ties on your handle and use it as a ruler so you don't have to keep pulling a tape measure out
Maybe you are using to large shrimps for that hook? I still love your vids and the fact that you spend so much time with your father. But then again your dad is really cool 👍😎
I tried! The large shrimps don’t fit
@@HeySkipper I have corrected a typo. I meant trying smaller scrimps?
Cool video, Thanks
Hallo new member from papua indonesia
I have a challenge. Wish list .Com pole casting net. It cost about 1.. use weight and Sinker. Other videos people wasn't using it right. Come to Hampton va
Haha okay
What’s up Hey skipper love the vids man ur LEGEND
Hey joey! Thank you for watching:)
Maybe bend the hook out wider but it could be larger
that hook is good i will try
I dont think the fish are hitting thay shrimp hard enough to crunch through the shell to the hook barb
I think you are right about that
@@HeySkipper this might be the perfect rig for softshell sandfleas then! 👍👍 if they fit
Gooooood like ♥️🇩🇿🐟
Are use those as well once and I did miss a lot of fish and I switch to the circle hook and haven’t gone back since I don’t use any other hooks but the circle hooks I have really good luck with those but I did like the idea of that hook unfortunately it just misses too many
Muy bonito video saludos
Thank you for watching my friend 🙏🏼
Gracias broski!
Hey skipper,
I live in a tiny tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean called Saipan. It's kind of hard surf fishing here cause the fish are so picky. What kind of bait do you think I should use? Thanks
If you can find crabs, any kind of small crabs should do the trick. Sorry, I'm not the Skipper
They should make this with a circle hook on it that isn't pressed against the shrimp body.
Agreed. It just didn’t work as I expected.
Nice 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed
I'm not the best fisherman but these hooks seem legit to me. You're fishing them as if it's a circle hook. You're not jogging to set the hook you're just reeling. That's just my opinion. I gotta try those hooks for myself.
*jigging
The thing with the bobber method is, that it forms a big bow in the line when there is wind. You must reel in all that slack as fast as you can, by the time you are done, there is no time to set the hook. You just reel it and set when you feel pressure. The problem is I wasn’t feeling pressure. It would hit and spit.
What state are you in
Every new stuff needs time to get well acquainted.J hooks needs to be set first and then reel...you were reeling them like circle hooks
Pls this hooks purchaseing link
The hook is too obtrusive. And dude you can't be winding down when you're setting the hook. You can do that with circle maybe if you slow down the wind but with those hooks you should check slack at all times and set the hook with rod.
True
Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching! That hook was obtrusive for sure
I think the hooks need to be a thinner gauge, might get a better hook set.
where are you fishing
Florida
its good for bottom fishing not for casting for sure.
May need to wait a little longer before setting the hook.
Don't set it like normal. Slightly pull and it will set itself. I've had a lot of luck with these hooks.
How to i buy?
Hey bud not sure exactly where you got those from but I fish a lot of trout in South Carolina around Charleston also reds use a lot of live shrimp they have a similar device that you put on a hook of your choice I'm pretty sure you can find them online it's an attachment use not to penetrate the shrimp been about a year since I've been there but I'm 100% sure it exists check it out look into it Good luck
Ahhh thanks for the suggestion
The idea of these are cool, but it doesn't seem to be the best overall design. I think the hook size just doesn't get good position and they either spit it out too quickly or the hook set pulls it out of their mouth instead of setting the hook. I always prefer circle hooks because the fish pretty much hook themselves. It was an interesting concept though and I appreciate that you experiment with things before writing them off completely.
I have used them all the time there great for spekeld trout
I kept missing fish! What did I do wrong?
@@HeySkipper idk I didnt have that problem I just set the hook.
This hook only work on large shrimp. But fish like to eat small shrimp, or small shrimp will let the fish swallow. I miss a lot of fish on this hook more than i can get on any kind of hook
My large shrimp didn’t fit on it very well:(
Shrimp. Ouch stop hooking me
Skipper. Oh no it dies not hurt them
lease focus your camera better on how you set the shrimp hook and the circle hook. Thanks
Have these but never used!
