How to stream DAW audio on your Mac to use in OBS / Streamlabs OBS for live streaming and recording. This method requires two pieces of Mac software (one free + one paid) and works in all DAW's and for all streaming platforms (including UA-cam, Twitch, Mixer, Facebook, Logic Pro, Cubase, Ableton Live, Digital Performer, Cakewalk, & Pro Tools).

STEPS IN VIDEO:
===============
1️⃣ Download the free Soundflower audio router: rogueamoeba.com/freebies/soun...
*If you are using Mac OS Mojave or later, you'll need to use this workaround to use Soundflower, since it is only supported up to Mac OS High Sierra: www.fluxforge.com/blog/soundf...
*Alternatively, you can buy the $99 Loopback app which does exactly what Soundflower does, but I'd rather you save the money! But if you prefer: rogueamoeba.com/loopback
2️⃣ Buy & Download Audio Hijack app: rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack
3️⃣ Turn both Audio Hijack and Soundflower on while recording / streaming for your audio to pass through to your viewers. While in OBS or Streamlabs OBS, all DAW audio will show up as "Desktop Audio". If you have headphones plugged into your audio interface, you will be able to hear both your microphone & CPU audio.
*Here's a screenshot of how I have my Mac routed to stream DAW audio through Audio Hijack, Soundflower, and OBS: stevenmelin.com/macobs

I personally bought loopback & hijack and this worked very well for me. I had given up on trying to stream my sessions since I have a iMac but this my friend has changed the game!!! Thank you so much bro!!
I’m glad to hear that!
You knew I needed this XD Thanks man!
Heh, yessir! You and dozennnns of others have been asking for months. I finally got to it! 👌
Man thank you!! You literally just helped me start my streaming journey. I appreciate u!
Thank you so much for this! You saved my concert! What's odd is that I've had issues for two days now, and had questions in to both Streamyard and Rogue, and neither one of them mentioned Audio Hijack.
thank you so much! just starting on twitch. appreciate this!
man that was a mission to set up but thank you I got it,... much love from New Zealand
Great stuff! Thanks so much! I use StreamYard for streaming, and was always curious about how to connect my DAW audio to it.
You literally just saved my channel! Thank you so much! The only issue I am having now is that when I talk it only monitor to the left ear. I am not sure if that is just how it is. Or if you know a way to fix it. I have the same issue with ishow u audio capture too.
Great to hear! Hmm, is your Audio Hijack session set to stereo or mono (Channels 1-2 or just a single channel?) How about your DAW session?
MacBook Pro, 2ch Scarlett, microphone + Sound Flower + Audio Hijack = the best future songwriting live-stream on twitch. Thank you so much! (My band, My Brothers And I, owes you big time!)
So glad to hear this works for ya!
Hi "BAGC" Steven, Thanks for this great video! I'd been trying to work out how to pull in audio form Cubase and Dorico, to create OBS videos and use for Zoom sessions with my high school students in lockdown. Thanks, you did it! Subscribed / Liked / Watching out for you again... Best wishes from the UK.
That’s awesome to hear! Ha, yeah...my channel name change is weird, but it helps people find my content vs. my name.
Pretty clear thanks bro
this was really helpful and my DAW is coming through obs and sounds great... until I stream then it sounds very robotic the vocals specifically. any suggestions?
thank you very much steven!
I’m glad this is helpful!
Thank you so much for this video, it was so helpful!!!!!! I have a question: Everything is working for me, but when I press record in Hijack there’s a slight echo. I think I hear it in this video too. Do you know what that could possibly be from and how to solve it? Thank you!
Yes! Mute your desktop audio. You’re likely hearing both the original source + the Audio Hijack audio at the same time in your headphones.
@@StevenMelin thanks so much I will try this!
Man, always like your ‘problem solving’ videos. Thank You! Unfortunately, this didn’t work for me. Most likely I’m doing something wrong. Sooooooo frustrating. I’ve been trying for a while now. Different options, downloads, tons of instructional videos... and still haven’t been able to get it going. Workflow... ProTools PreSonus Digimax LT/MOTU 896 HD (or Scarlett 2i2), iMac 2013 27” running Mohave, OBS. For some reason there’s always 1 element in the equation that doesn’t seem to work. Any suggestions?
Great tutorial
I’m glad this is helpful!
Great video. Im using soundcard xox k10 and mic at100 insert through from soundcard. Im using cubase. How to set up in/out in cubase for soundcard xox k10. Thank..
Thanks Steven.
I’m glad this is helpful!
Thank you so much for this!
I'm curious.... would I be able to pipe in my (Studio One) DAW audio and then let's say... have all other mac audio (web browser, and iTunes) "cued up" to run simultaneously into OBS and be able to stream all that to zoom or Facebook or youtube using what you've demonstrated in this video??
That’s correct!
Save yourself some headache. If you are a mac person bothering to stream DAW audio, Loopback *is* a worthwhile investment. And Rogue Amoeba sells a bundle with Hijack. You may never need Hijack. Loopback is a use every day tool.
I definitely needed this. Do you have an Audio Hijack link where you get a commission/referral fee if we use that link?
Glad this is helpful! Thanks for asking, but nope. AH doesn’t offer affiliates :/
@@StevenMelin :( LOL. No problem
Hi, Thanks for the video. Does this work on vmix?
HI Steven- very helpful thanks!!! I had one question- I followed all the instructions- and I can hear everything in Audio Hijack except my DAW (Pro Tools). I'm using an UA thunderbolt Apollo interface. I can hear my microphone (plugged into the Apollo) as well as all iMac audio, but the DAW audio doesn't seem to be getting to Audio Hijack. In AH session, I have an Input Device (set to UA Thunderbolt) and System Audio, both going to an Output Device (UA Thunderbolt), to another Output Device (Soundflower 2ch) to an mp3 recorder. Any ideas? BTW I'm using the trial version of AH for now. Thanks!
Heyo, no need to use Soundflower with this Mac setup - that’s what is messing up the chain. Remove that piece and it should route correctly.
@@StevenMelin Thanks- I'll try that!!
Hi. Thanks for the video. I’m trying to stream audio to Omegle from a USB interface connected to my Mac that is running Reaper. Everything seems to work fine other than no one on Omegle can hear my streaming audio and I can’t hear any of them. Any suggestions?
Hey Steven,
I had a more simple question... I was wondering, if I am just doing an Facebook Live stream, and I'm using Soundflower is there not a way to just also be able to monitor the audio without needing Audiohack installed? I was just imagining using Garageband, or even your system settings you could change the routing??? (I'm assuming headphones from the interface won't work because you would also need your DAW's source audio too..?
I just was looking for the most simplified way for just FB Live, I am aware of OBS and I haven't looked into it.. but I am happy to download and install if the routing can be done with OBS. I was just thinking I could get away with Monitoring the Output Stream audio without additional software?
The method I explain in this vid is the simplest I’ve come across! It only involves one app (AudioHijack) and will definitely work on FB Live.
Thanks for this Steve, I think I'm finally getting somewhere. Q. I have a MAC, Quad capture interface and OBS and will now download soundflower and Audio Hijack; do I still have to have a DAW? Are there any basic free ones ?
You do need a DAW of some kind. Try Cakewalk or Reaper, both have free versions.
@@StevenMelin Thanks Steven will try Reaper
can't you use the monitor option for audio in OBS aswell?
So can you play instrument on logic and at the same time use the mic through logic?
So am i correct in thinking that if you arent using the internal mic of the mac, and want all of your audio to come from your Interface>DAW signal chain, you only need "system Audio" and an input and not the "input device" block you have in this demo?
That’s correct! However you may not want to record 100% audio from your computer (web browser / music player / notifications / etc), so I usually avoid System Audio unless that’s a need.
Do you have to do any setting on the audio midi ?
Hi Steven, I need a USB mixer (I think). I want to have an online radio station (Reaper & OBS). I have a yamaha quad interface already, but need to run an analogue DJmixer to it. I also want a mixer for recording bass and guitar and vox to computer. but of course want good sound quality. I want to spend £100-120. Which USB mixer do you recommend? ... do I need a mixer if I have Soundflower and Hijack?
You don’t need a mixer to stream audio. The purpose of a mixer is to have more control of volume levels during a stream, but I personally don’t use one.
@@StevenMelin ok thanks Steven
I have Pro Tools installed on a Mac Book Pro, feeded by microphones through an Apogee Ensemble interface, which has spdif outputs. Would it be possible to connect the Pro Tools DIGITAL output to an Obs installed on ANOTHER laptop (Windows), for live streaming? This Obs laptop has no spdif inputs.
I have no clue about that! Let me know what you learn.
One question, can I use my headphones 3mm to put in my computer. So I can hear what I'm playing without any problem?
Technically yes! However your sound quality will be very poor compared to using an audio interface at 48kHz quality. Honestly, none of that quality matters unless you do audio production live streaming like me where sound quality is essential.
I don't understand how everything was working one day and the next it doesn't. I use a focusrite to Mac. I can record on OBS the microphone through focusrite channel 1....but my guitar on channel 2 and drums channel 3 no longer record...though I can hear them working through Logic....I changed nothing..its irritating......solutions?
OBS can only pick up mic channel 1 or 2 from your audio interface. If you want to use multiple mics / inputs, use the software described in this video.
If you have an updated iMac running the current MacOS, you don't even need Hijack. Just launch "Audio Midi Setup," click the + and add an aggregate device. Then you select Soundflower, and your select audio hardware.
You can do this as a free workaround on all Mac OS versions, but you’ll have to change it back before / after every recording, which to me is not a great long-term solution.
@@StevenMelin meh. First world problems. 😜
@@StevenMelin Well, after sleeping on it, and installing the trial version of Hijack for a test, I'm a believer. I set up an aggregate device as described above for my DAW, but I also wanted to play audio from my browser. There is a conflict between Blackhole (I use that instead of Soundflower) and iShowU which apparently is needed for iMac's built-in webcam. And Hijack solved that conflict. Cheers.
@@JerridFoilesAwesome to hear!! Simplicity is incredibly important, especially for streaming. The less moving parts, the less chances for errors.
@@StevenMelin it’s funny you say that because that’s why I brought up aggregate devices vs Hijack. Lol
Great video! Does this work with Protools on a mac?
Yes! This captures audio from the entire machine, not just the open app.
@@StevenMelin got it! will give it a try later. Huge help man, huge help 👌🏾
any way to fix the latency when using an interface to monitor yourself?
Sure, within OBS in the sound settings you can add / subtract milliseconds from the “audio delay” section to reduce or add latency.
isn't Blackhole the new soundflower?
Does this work if you just want to screen record rather than livestream?
Sure does! In OBS or Streamlabs OBS you can hit the Record button instead of Go Live and it will save a screen recording.
Does this work on Ecamm live
Would I be able to do this on Wirecast???
I’ve never used Wirecast, but this solution sends all Mac audio to Soundflower, which you can select as your Audio Input in any program, likely Wirecast too.
the new macos did not allow SF. thoughts?
Have you tried an older version (link in description)?
Is it possible to use this for live guitar effects
You can use this to stream any audio from your Mac, so if you have your guitar run through your FX in a DAW, definitely!
Soundflower / kext extensions are not supported by the current OS on Mac. Blackhole works as a replacement. I've used it to route Audiohijack into my OBS from Ableton Live existential.audio/blackhole/?pk_campaign=github&pk_kwd=readme
Read the description for a link to the old version of Soundflower that still works on all Mac OS versions.
How about to smartphones? How do you livestream your daw sound to a smartphone?
No clue - is that even possible?
So it looks like you used OBS. Would this work with StreamLabs?? I’m brand new to this. I saw this just after downloading StreamLabs.
Yes! OBS & Streamlabs OBS work identically.
Steven Melin Thanks a ton! I want to get back into making music(even though I’m terrible.) and streaming might be a great venue for me to help keep myself accountable.
A.W. Melodies streaming is an amazing way to grow quickly!
Any cheaper alternatives to audio hijack on Mac??
That’s the only tool for the job outside of creating an aggregate device / switching audio input & output every time you stream (free option, but a PAIN).
Hey im having problem with my imac sierra
How can i download OBS
When i try to install they said
'OBS cannot be opened because of problem'
I try many time to fix but still the same 😓
Hmm, try right-clicking and opening OBS as an Administrator?
Anyone there can help setup my sound from fl studio into streamlabs on mac? it will mean a lot! please
Man I'm getting signal from my imac mic in hijack but not signal from my daw. (protools). What might I be doing wrong?
Are you using the “Desktop Audio” tile in Hijack as your audio output? That should capture all audio from your machine, including Pro Tools.
@@StevenMelin i am. but no go. ive emailed customer support but havent heard anything.
I can’t find the sound flower
How can I get soundflower my Mac still wouldn’t allow it
Did you download a previous version of Soundflower compatible with your OS version? If that still doesn’t work, use the Loopback free trial to at least get a functional workflow.
How do I do with a discord
Discoed Audio (“Desktop Audio”) should stream with this same setup within OBS.
Bro . This was so boring . We wanted the info . You ranted nonsense for way too long , before getting to relevant info . Omg - I knew about soundflower2ch .. sheeesh
