Hi Annette 👋 Don't you just love the smell of old books? That lovely paper smell reminds of my Mum - she's always got her nose in a book and her knitting needles clicking away! 💜
These videos are so soothing. I’m a new subscriber. You remind me of my grandmother but way back when I was a child so she was probably in her 50’s. She taught me how to knit and we loved going thrifting together. She was a wonderful woman. I wish I remembered how to do it but your videos have inspired me to go thrift for some crotchet supplies and give it a go!
Aww, that's so very kind of you to say, thank you! 🙏💗 I am so glad to hear that my little videos have given you some inspiration! Good on you for getting back into such a lovely and creative hobby! ☺️💗🧶 If you need any help, by all means let me know, and I'll help out where I can 💗💗
I am so glad you found all the scrap yarn and the knitting looms. I am making a sweater with a knitting loom and it has been great for the other projects as well.
Hi Brittany 👋 Thanks for your comment! 😊 Making a sweater with a loom?! Wow! That sounds like a fun project! Are you making separate panels and then joining them, or is there another way to make them? 🤔🧶
The mesh yarn is for scarfs, technically its supposed to be knitted but there were crafters crocheting it, when you open it up there is a foundation chain on one side that you work on, it does make a beautiful ruffle scarf.
Hi, boy, I would love to go op shopping with you. And I think that is a wonderful idea of yours take bargains, work them up and donate the results back. Op shops are really good places for bargains. When will you have a tutorial on those bunnies??? I can hardly wait. Thank you for sharing. Regards ❤
Hi Judy 👋 Thanks so much for your comment 🙏 💗 I'm currently finishing the filming of the bunny tutorial, and will be editing it tomorrow so it should be available on my channel either tomorrow night, or Saturday afternoon! 😃💗🐰
Your videos of treasure finds gets me so excited and happy!! Thank you Mel❤for sharing. I loved the yarn you found and those beautiful magazines. Loved the articles too!
Mesh yarn can make a ruffled shawl, skirt/tutu, interesting hat. I find Fair Isle is not particularly hard as it is just a matter of following the pattern on the grid but getting the technique for weaving in at the back is important for a nice finish. Prices vary in Op shops according to the opinion of each volunteer who sorts and prices, and on the expectations and attitudes of the manager. Also, importantly, some shops are run as businesses for personal profit with only a small part of the takings going to the charity.
Thanks for another great inspirational video. I am also thinking about learning to loom knit but I can knit so I have been putting it off! That kit has made me want to try it now. I was interested to see the Better Homes and Gardens books that you purchased as I also have those and others too - they have heaps of great patterns. Thanks again Mel and I look forward to your next trip 🧡🧡
Hi Tina 👋 Thank you so much for your lovely comment 🙏 💗 I'm so glad you enjoy watching 😃 Yes, I'm excited to try the looms out and see what I can come up with. I'm so glad I was able to inspire you to give it a try! 😊 Yes, the Better Homes and Gardens books do have some great patterns in them, don't they? What a great resource! I hope to find more in my upcoming adventures 😊
I was gifted some of the chain mesh yarns awhile back and never knew how to use it. In the end i just used it like a chunky yarn and crocheted baskets with it :)
Hi Thea 👋 Thank you so much for your comment 🙏 💗 I have been told in the comments that apparently it's great for knitting simple scarves with! I do like your idea of making baskets with it, though. That sounds really creative! 😃💗🧶
I think crafters must hang on to their crochet hooks because I never have much luck finding them in thrift shops! There always seems to be knitting needles however!
Great little book on lace edge’s brings back memories of my childhood ,sharing breakfasts the jug cover wow…😊 very envious of people who crochet with cottons
Hi Angela 👋 Oh isn't that a lovely memory to have? Yes, I too am envious of people who can crochet with those tiny cottons! What an amazing skill to have 😊 Maybe one day we can learn it too 🤗💗
The Knitting book is amazing. What a resource! Looking forward to what you might share with us. Internet, yes. But so much joy in the hard copy to literally be able to touch!
Hi Kaytie 👋 Thanks so much for such a kind comment 🙏💗 Yes, it is a fantastic old book, and it has that lovely old paper smell too 💗 There's just something so lovely about learning new things from older books, isn't there?
If anyone is ever in Queensland, the Salvos Op Shop in Caloundra will knock your eyes out. It is huge. Quite a wealthy retirement area so it is good to see people giving so much to help others. Lots of furniture. Hard to get a carpark any day of the week. As it comes out the front door you can see it donated at the back. So many people so it might not appeal to everyone.
Hello Mel. You could donate the crocheted / knitted blankets to Aged Care Homes. They would look so colourful on the resident's bed, making it look more homely. Have a good day.
Hi Gippsew 👋 What a lovely idea 😃💗 I will definitely look into my local nursing homes and see if they accept donations 😊 it will be nice to know those beautiful blankets are providing such comfort for people 🥰
Gidday frm nz. Love yr show. A friend of mine donates blankets to preschools. I used to donate smaller blankets to spca. Yr prices in Australia way cheaper than nz. Yr show is so respectful towards those who made the blankets etc.❤❤
Kia Ora Cathy! 👋 Thanks so much for your kind comment 🙏💗 That's very sweet that your friend used to donate to preschools and you to the SPCA! How lovely 💗 I will need to research our local charities, I think! I wonder why the prices over here are cheaper? 🤔
My teenager loom knits. It's more of a relaxing fidget thing for her. She has made a couple hats with chunky yarn. She also steals my 2mm crochet hook. She says she prefers it over the included pick thing. Thank you for giving me something positive to listen to while I do dishes. Also a timer. I can't stop cleaning until the video ends! P.s. around here the hospitals accept baby size blankets to comfort children when they're distressed. Also nursing homes for new residents.
Hi Jess 👋 Thank you so much for watching, I'm so glad you enjoy my content 🙏💗🤗 Thank you so much for the tips about hospitals and nursing homes. I will look into my local's and see if they are accepting donations 😊💗
Hi Tracy 👋 Thanks for your comment 🙏 💗 Yes I'll need to do some research and watch a few tutorials to see how to use the looms. They look like fun, though 😃 Did you enjoy using it?
I'm not interested in the looms myself as I'm a firm believer that sticks are faster, even for beginner knitters, plus they limit you to the gauge you get on them. However, there is an old lady in town with arthritis and shaky hands that uses one as she has trouble holding things these days and can still feel accomplished as long as she can hold the hook, which is a crochet hook as she finds it easier to work with than the loom hook. The prices on the op shop things were very reasonable. Those blankets - again. I think you could make another crochet cardigan with those scraps using lots of granny squares for it in all those colours. The old craft books, especially those published in the 1970's are way more generous with information, pattern stitches, techniques and patterns than anything that has been published since. There are a few I used to borrow from the library but are no longer available (having become discarded and no longer purchasable) which I would love to find for my own reference. I haven't had much luck yet. Lacework stitches do not have to be limited to fine gauge thread, doilies and such. I've used a lot of edge stitch techniques with thicker wool. You can easily use a lace edge technique with thicker yarn to edge a blanket or the hem of clothing. I don't use a lot of fancy yarn for knitting and crochet, but have some in stash from those times where the eye got caught by how pretty the ball was (we all know this yes?). I've used some up by machine sewing it down over seams on some of my crazy patchwork panels where it has worked as a great embellishment. I've also used it as embellishment with hand embroidery and other crafts.
Hi Nefraial 👋 So nice to hear from you again 🤗💗 Thank you for sharing that with me. Yes, I feel like looms would be a wonderful alternative for those who are no longer able to knit or crochet, as they seem like they would be less stressful on the hands/wrists. I hope you are able to track down those resource books you mentioned. Thank you for the feedback 🤗💗 Your work truly sounds so lovely 💗
What wonderful finds you have discovered! I can’t wait to see what you make with them. You have sparked my enthusiasm to visit lots of Op Shops in my region again. I passed one in the car yesterday but I had lots to do on my agenda and didn’t dare go in as I’m sure I would have lost an hour or two just browsing and finding new treasures to buy and take home 🏡.
Hi LooLoo 👋 Thank you for your comment 🙏 💗 I'm so glad I was able to inspire you! You never know what treasures you might find! Best of luck in your op shop hunt! 🤞 I hope you find some amazing things! 😃💗
I love your videos when you go shopping. You have some lovely colors for a nice blanket. The thrift stores here do not have much yarn. So sad for me. I love to thrift shop.
Hi Julie 👋 I'm so sad that your thrift stores don't have a lot of crafting items for you to find 😔 I hope joining me on my little adventures can bring you a little joy 🤗💗 What sort of things do you look for while you're thrifting?
Oh yes those looms I have them. I recently made a flower on the circular loom (it’s in my channel). It’s great to see that someone else will be making something with the rectangle shaped ones as I’m not sure what to make either. Hopefully a few ideas in the comments Mel 😊

Hi Yasmin 👋 Thanks for sharing that info! 😊 It does seem like it's made for knitting, doesn't it? I seem to be finding a lot of it lately. I wonder if people over here bought it cheaply from the UK and then just didn't use it for some reason? 🤔🧶
I must get to that op shop in wendouree. That mess yarn was all the rage years ago. Its easy to work with, you just knit into the upper most loops and it knits up really fast.
Hi Angelina 👋 Oh, is that how you use the mesh yarn? I have no clue how you would use it, so I appreciate that info! I wonder what it works up like? 🤔🧶
I got 2 two-gallon bags of that mesh yarn at a church rummage sale--mess is an even better name for it! It was a fad maybe 10-15 years ago to make scarves with it. I used to make a oval rug. I blogged on it at My Little Farm in Town on Word Press. It is easy to find me by goggling My Little Farm in Town.

Hiya 👋 Yes, I have been very lucky! I imagine there must be a lot of crafters in my area, and that helps a lot 😊 I will say that finding crochet tools is still quite rare, especially compared to knitting supplies, which seem to be everywhere, don't they? She started her channel by being solely loom knitting now she mostly does crochet. But some of her old videos are great learning tools. Thanks as always Mel! I enjoy your content so much! ❤️
Hiya 👋 I would love to show you how to use that mesh yarn - if I knew how! 😆 I think I'll need to do some research and see how to work with it! I'm super intrigued! Sadley, the US terms have overtaken the British crochet terms in Australia due to the greater number of UA-camrs. Europeans are using US terms as well.
Hi Kyerryn 👋 Yes, Betty is correct. Originally, Australians used the UK terminology, and all of our patterns were written using UK terms, but with the rise of the internet, we also picked up the US terminology too. A lot of people can read both now 😊
Love all the books ! I have some from early 1900's and refer to them from time to time ! 😊🎉❤

That bag of brightly colored threads is probably recycled Sari silk. The threads are added to yarn while spinning it to make a really colorful yarn.
Oh, thanks for that info, Daphne! 😃💗

Hi Slavica 👋 yes, they are very hard to find! I've found 2 in 6 months, and all the rest were knitting needles!

Does Australia use US or British crochet terms?
Sadley, the US terms have overtaken the British crochet terms in Australia due to the greater number of UA-camrs. Europeans are using US terms as well.
Hi Kyerryn 👋 Yes, Betty is correct. Originally, Australians used the UK terminology, and all of our patterns were written using UK terms, but with the rise of the internet, we also picked up the US terminology too. A lot of people can read both now 😊
