    I feel the same and have asked the big manufacturers at the gun shows if they would be doing any in the future and most do not seem interested. I think a tx 200 or the hw 97 with a magazine would be awesome 😎👍🏻

    Did the other day little tuning job on a new 77 - piston buttoning, sleeve buttoning, short stroke seal, shorted full power spring - boy oh boy did it turn into a super sweet shooter. And I had a reason to get my lathe usable again. Great review Dan.
    Edit: Just winging it - the Weihrauch HW77 you can still buy new, the other two are out of production and collectors items. So unless you get lucky either of the two can go for as much as a new HW77.

    Nice , my first air rifle was a BSA Superstar. Underlever with rotating breech loading 16 ft lbs. Wish I still had it. Best wishes from Northern Ireland.

      The Superstar is a nice looking rifle I've still got to review one of those. The Goldstar was a nice bit of kit but I think its light weight worked against it.
      I've had a few comments saying how ridiculously accurate the Superstar's where and I really need to get my hands on one. I need to find something to beat that German!

    Great review dan but I would like to say the important thing about any gun especially if being used for vermin control is laser accuracy to be humane the perfect head shot is needed in a sub 12 ftlb , not what it look like, or the capability for a quicker second shot, the quarry should be clinically despatched with one shot, that's why you buy a laser accurate pcp to do that job more efficiently, but if you do choose a springer at least use the most accurate as its far more important on live quarry than it would be for punching holes in a piece of paper, so on that point the hw77 wins aswell not the bsa surely, even rats deserve a single shot to the head do they not, Really sorry if iv'e offended in any way but I feel strongly about the importance of accuracy when it comes to dispatching wild creatures humanely, targets are just for honing your skills, zeroing in scopes, and for competitions are they not, Anyway apart from that difference of opinion it was a good review of three very different guns well done dan 👍

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  2 роки тому

      Hi Alfred!
      I agree wholeheartedly and I have the toughest time trying to explain to people that accuracy always trumps power.
      A PCP may be easier to shoot accurately but a good shot with the right springer can and will match PCP's down range and that is especially so when hunting. I myself only hunt with a springer and it's yet to let me down when it comes to cleanly dispatching quarry.
      In regards to the BSA it's easily capable of cleanly killing vermin at the yardages we tested and having the ability to quickly load the second shot for another rat/rabbit etc is an advantage that's well worth praising.
      Thanks Alfred and no offense caused at all I actually agree with you. Accuracy>power.

    and the Weihrauch is 34 years young !!!!!!!! My´n ( .177)is 18 years old , has the original spring in it and shoots like a dream. The only thing I did is reduced power from 18 fpe to 11.5 fpe ( shoot´n to hard) and put a layer of a beer can around the spring for get away the tweng ! It works perfect!!!!!!!

  • @bobthebarsteward

    I found loading the Eclipse easier and probably quicker than the HW77, or any other sliding breech rifle I've owned. The underlever on the 77 needs to be held with a small amount of tension when loading for safety reasons, which is using a small amount of your body's energy reserves each shot, the Eclipse doesn't. I also find it easier getting a pellet in the Eclipse's breech, and should you drop it, it's easier to fish out than a dropped pellet in a sliding breech rifle.

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  5 років тому +1

      Hi Rob,
      I definitely agree with you regarding dropping a pellet in the breech. From experience in doing some pest control in low light conditions with a HW97 it is a nightmare if you drop a pellet in the wrong place. Which is easy to do especially if you have cold fingers...

  • @Mike_P646
    @Mike_P646 5 років тому +2

    My friend had an eclipse back in the day and we put a Venom powr-lok spring in it.
    It was horrible,quick lock time but it was harsh and would regularly snap the front stock screws.
    The factory spring was a lot better.
    Great review by the way .👍

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  5 років тому +1

      Hi Mikey,
      Jesus that thing sounded powerful to snap the stock screws!!! Mine recoils petty nicely with it only being slightly harsher than the HW77, the thing that makes it seem worse until you get used to it is the high pitched "chank!" it makes upon firing.
      Thanks for the kind comment mate, I think I'm going to be finding some new pellets to try in the Eclipse as I can't have it being out-shot by Herman. I simply cannot let the Weihrauch guys and girls be right haha.

    I enjoy the enthusiasm of the sport and accent but I'll take my NO QUESTIONS ASKED full power versions here in the US. I purchased the new BSA Meteor Super solely because it was made in England and love it's lightweight and super quick gas ram lock time but the Hatsan Proxima in .177 full power is just as accurate as the German 77 and has a multi shoot mag. People slept on the Proxima. I love Underlever guns and German guns but that Proxima finds itself in my hands more than my Diana 56th and that rifle is wonderful. It's heavy but that's what a tree for bracing is all about in the woods. Great video man. I just recently come across your channel. Will continue watching. Btw, I miss my Cometa Fusion.. wish I never traded it off!! LONG LIVE THE SPRINGER!!

    Hahaha😂 Come on Dan. You said you wouldn’t be sitting on the fence. Let’s face it. The 77 does what a rifle is supposed to do. It puts the pellets where you point it. That is all a rifle is designed to do. Very enjoyable review though. 😊

  • @99ron30

    I have a Walther LGU .177 and a Gamo CFX .22. And in use I actually prefer the Gamo. It's pretty damn accurate, is light as a feather and it has the amazing BSA rotary breech design. Also I have owned it since 2007 with zero issues.
    The rotating breech is in my eyes the best way of loading an underlever as your fingers are safe and you are putting the pellet directly into the barrel. Whereas pop up breeches or taps potentially have alignment issues. Why on earth BSA aren't currently making an underlever with that design is anyone's guess.

    Had a hw77 I was surprised how easy it is to handle given it's weight.
    I de tuned to give a nicer firing cycle,using RWS Super field which it liked and gave webley style shots rested at around 10.4 ftlb.
    I'd seen some people had used Bisley Magnums in their rifles with results like your's.
    I tried it,well the single hole of the weihrauch was revealed with the always mentioned PCP accuracy,what of the power 11.9ft!!!!!
    Every other pellet jsb and AA included 10-10.5 ftlb,11.97 was a bit rich for me so was reduced to 11.3 ftlb.
    It was self blued and came up a treat,wish I'd never sold it it was the 25mm cylinder too.
    I've had the 97k too which was a Lazer with crosman lite .177 that was reduced to 10.3 ftlb and was more accurate than my bsa scorpion se .177.
    At the time I got to shoot a Goldstar an LGU and an AA tx200.
    I don't like the clicking of either the LGU or AA.
    They both feel more cumbersome to shoulder than the slimline nature and balance of the 77.
    The Goldstar had a charm of it's own and would be the perfect ratting gun.
    I liked it's lumbering firing cycle it's chunkyness and the multi shot feature,but the looks and handling of the 77 is in another league.
    The only two UK market Weihrauchs I've not had are the 99 or the 57 in the adult size rifles.
    I've had 4 hw35's and would say that is by far my favourite of them all the firing cycle is like a gas ram,I had a Brum stingray I got from my local gun shop with a gas ram fitted that was almost the nicest rifle I ever fired but the 35 was it's equal for lock time and firing cycle and just swung it.
    Currently have a parker hale striker(lightning with a steel silencer) and a relum Taurus which is my favourite low powered rifle of all,no Weihrauchs which is strange given I'm a weihrauch fan boy,maybe another 35 as they're the most overlooked and affordable.
    A future review to be considered perhaps???

    Breathing patterns have a significant effect on grouping - when shooting in competitions I was taught to hold my breath when fully exhaled & settle into the shot before firing. Also not to fight the recoil by gripping the Forestock too tightly. (almost just resting in the palm)

  • @TheFoxio
    @TheFoxio 5 років тому +2

    I'm glad you gave the old Weihrauch the respect it deserves this time around mate.lol When you find a pellet any Weihrauch likes then you will get similar results! As for the trigger then well I applaud your uncle for lightening up a bit for you .lol It's not cheating...It's just slight adustments that any owner can do with a screwdriver.. I'm old now (58) But when I was in my late 20's early 30's I used to hunt with a 77 & stalk around hedgerows for hours at a time with no sling attatched..I got used to the weight very quickly & it was'nt an issue :) ( I was a very skinny guy..About 6 foot tall but I only weighed about 11 stone) Being an old fogey now though I get out of breath carrying a heavy bag of shopping home from Asda .lol Good video mate.

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  5 років тому +1

      Hi Derek,
      It was sabotage! There's no way that German thing can outshoot my lovely Webley.
      I personally agree about the weight thing I find that it doesn't take long to get accustomed to it, I actually prefer a heavier rifle over a lighter one and that transfers over to PCP's as well.
      In all seriousness though it's a lovely bit of kit and in my opinion no other springer will shoot as good as a well sorted HW77.
      The Eclipse really isn't that far behind though..

      Hi David,
      thanks ever so much mate, yeah it's easy to see why the HW77 got so much praise back in the day (and still does to this day). When a rifle that first hit our shores in 1983' (I think) can still outperform pretty much every other springer on the market today you know it's an amazing bit of kit.
      They really are a beautifully smooth thing to shoot.

    Great video Dan. What a cracking rifle the gold start looks ! Why ever did BSA stop production of the superb 10 shot repeating underlever ? . The BSA Gamo Maxxim equivalent looks ugly compared to this beauty. BSA/GAMO should bring back the Goldstar, a beautiful 10 shot magazine fed rifle. Please BSA !

    • @bigdansairguns83
      @bigdansairguns83  5 років тому

      Hi Brian,
      The Goldstar is a lovely bit of kit mate, I've had a fondle of the Maxxim but I've yet to actually shoot one. I can see what you mean with the mag sort of just sticking out of the action but to its credit it doesn't interfere with the scope and I support Gamo for trying to bring the multi-shot springer back to life.
      Artemis have brought out their own version in the SR900S which I'll be reviewing soon and the mags sit in the breech like a standard PCP as it uses a side-lever action. It's an interesting bit of kit.

    You need to use a standard length barrel HW77 to have a fair accuracy comparison. Also, the Eclipse is your own so the trigger etc is set up for you. It would be far more fair if you were to have some practice with, and be able to set up the triggers on the other two rifles.

      Hi Simon,
      thanks for the comment, regarding the rifles and their specs the HW77K is generally considered as the better rifle compared to the full sized version with the longer barrelled HW77 not having any better accuracy at sub 12ft-lbs and being inferior when it comes to balance.
      It's a good point about the experience with each rifle however which is why we re-did the shootout after spending more time with the HW77K.. The results are quite a bit different to say the least!
      Thanks Simon.

      I think they look better as a full length barrel though personally and I'd imagine that it'd be easier to cock.
      I know what you mean by front heavy as well.. I've got a HW97 review that needs to be uploaded and that thing is pretty nose heavy, that being said though once you get used to it they're pretty easy to hold still.
      The Webley is a strange rifle as it's even longer than the standard HW77 I believe but due to the alloy piston it's actually quite a bit lighter! It's a weird thing to shoulder until you get used to it.
      Cheers Simon.

      unfortunately not mate you've got to bear in mind how many shots are left with this one.

    If the gun was owned by me guess it wouldn’t have lasted long with me , it would get dry fired by mistake a lot , were I’ve not remembered my shots left used , and since this vid , Gamo has brought out that mag system on the break barrels that doesn’t look that clever , ugly looking things in my opinion, thanks for the vid Dan , nice to go down memory lane though must admit never seen that bsa before with mag cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

    The Eclispe is very much an underrated air rifle!
    I owned and used one for many years, it was an accurate reliable rifle and loading became second nature/ a doddle to use.
    If someone such as Nick Jenkins(?) had used one in field target competitions and won with it which was within its capabilities,then it would be highly regarded.
    The TX200 is an excellent air rifle for competitive shooting(hunter target) yet the majority choose Hw77/97s, a wee bit like cars such as the miss informed popularity of Mercedes and BMWs. When I pass a broken down car on a lay-by it’s usually one of those two makes.

    Hi Dan, great reviews, only just found your channel. I would be interested to see what you made of a similar modern under lever group test, for example, your hw97k v the tx200 and pro sport from air arms. You could even throw in the SMK bam 40 (xs41) as a budget option for those on a budget?.. Just a thought, keep up the good work.

      Hi Stephen,
      I've been thinking about that for a while now. I'd have to see if I could borrow and Air Arms but I was thinking the 97 vs Walther LGU could be interesting and as stated we could throw in an XS38 or something similar to see how much of a gap there is (if any).
      Could be very interesting mate.

      @@bigdansairguns83 I believe the smk version of tge tx200 (smk bam 40) is worryingly good for around 1/3 Of the price. It could be quite a good group test when you consider you have such a gap between cheapest and most expensive. For some of course, only the best will do, but to see where you get best bang for your buck the smk might be a contender. Personally I'm a hw97/77 fan, but it's great to see comparisons of more than just the usual top two or three guns. Obviously they are going to have to be there for what is now the benchmark standard. But I feel that other great guns are always left in the shadows as a result of that and I've really enjoyed seeing your comparisons of rifles that I've not had the pleasure of shooting myself. So I'll look forward to seeing what you can come up with. Cheers Dan, take it easy..

    I don't think you mentioned this, but is it possible to dry fire the BSA Goldstar with an empty magazine or does the empty magazine prevent you from actually cocking the rifle to shoot ?
    It would be easy to lose count of your shots, so I would be concerned about dry firing it, and we know that you should never dry fire a spring piston air rifle.
    As far as the time it takes to shoot the Eclipse and the HW77, why are you cocking the rifles with your left hand and then switching to your right hand to hold the lever while loading a pellet with your left hand ?
    Maybe because your pellet tin is near your left hand because of where you are sitting ?
    Just looks way too fiddly to me, as I always cock the lever or barrel with my left hand and hold it, while loading with my right hand.
    Enjoyed the video... pretty good shooting unrested, I must say !

    Can't believe I missed this one , I've caught it now though , it makes Me wonder if the Goldstar can out shoot a modern Gamo Maxim . I wonder why Gamo didn't re-use the older style Goldstar breech ? , It's much cleaner looking than the Maxims and looks "bullet proof" (pun intended) compared to the flimsy looking gamo which also looks a bit like a leaf/snow/ ice and assorted debris trap , possibly tangling in a bramble's whilst trying to hide from bunnykins or stalking the grey invaders in the woods leading to all sorts of cursing missed chances and even possibly expensive repairs . How about a shoot off between the BSA Gold Star Vs Gamo Maxim ?
    I've been busy for a while now so not had time to check Your channel for a while , it's been just over 2 months since the last one screened so I was really pleased to find one I'd missed , but I guess like Myself, work & life in general conspire against the best laid plans etc. so I understand that bit , But I'm starting to worry a little now just in case You've packed it in for some reason (own selfish reasons for the concerns - I like Your videos !) I just Hope Your Ok ? . ps I was rooting for the Webley though I wouldn't have minded the BSA winning but what can We say about any 20+ year old classics Vs a relatively modern and quite recently manufactured item , If the Brits had been made recently I'd have been gutted then ,but their the Old boys vs the relatively new boy so I think they held their corner very well . Beside's they've both got Class by the bucket load . Crack show as always , Thanks Dan .

      Hi Richard!
      I'm glad you liked the shootout mate and I second your thoughts about the Gamo's. They aren't bad rifles to be fair but they don't have the sleekest lines shall we say..
      I also wanted the Webley to win haha I plan on doing some serious pellet testing soon and praying I can find that one pellet that might spank the Weihrauch.. the hopes aren't high though it must be said.
      We've been away for a bit as the weather has been absolutely pants mate for ages, plus I've had a bad bout of manflu but thankfully things may be calming down a bit now so finger's crossed we'll be back in full force.

      It's good to be back watching again ! , I am a huge Webley & Scott fan ,and of course all things British , My 1st air Rifle was a Hawk MK ii Bought in the 1970s with both .177 & .22 interchangeable barrels, I loved that gun & at 14 could shoot the head of a match at 20 yards(as I! remember it anyway, it was probably only 12 - 15 yards really ) on a simple 1.4x20 scope that came with it when I bought it second hand of a mates older brother for £4.50 ! . Sadly in the mid 1980s a "friend" borrowed it and ruined it by bending the barrel & cracking the stock at the wrist (He didn't stay a friend much longer when he refused to cough up !) All because He didn't follow the Golden rule . .. ALWAYS ! Keep a Hold of the Barrel of Any break action air weapon !.
      Fast forward 2019 , I finally find another one for sale, at a price I can afford AND manage to secure it before someone Else snapped it up . It cost almost 50X more than My first one and took about as long to save for as the original had , (If I hadn't found it I was considering a PCP, until I saw the Remy Sabre but the Webley ( I ! ) couldn't wait so the Hawk it was .I've No regrets though, the guns in pretty good condition though there is a touch of slack in the breech which will need shimming when I can find a nice piece of thin brass to do it with , I have found that if I put a small sliver of a plastic drinks bottle between the gap whilst closing the breach I could consistently print 17/18mm groups in .22 and 14/15mm in .177 at 20 yards ( hardly Match Heads sadly) But it responded well with wasp (red tin) in .177 and likewise with RWS SuperFields in 5.52mm /.22 which were used for the above groups .
      If You let Me know the address of Your shop I'll post some down for You to put up the spout of the Eclipse hopefully the Eclipse will again be on top where it belongs (He He He) (with luck we'll PIP the hun - What ! LOL ) anyway work beckons and I need to go on patrol .Thanks again for the videos and feedback. Keep up the Good work that Man - - What ? Ha ha .

    I've owned all three. The eclipse was my favourite as it was lighter. The BSA magazine was absolutely dogshit. The BSA Super 10 magazine was never renowned for being good anyway. The weihrauch 77 was very heavy and was hard to load with your left hand due to the shape of the breech cut out but was superb. There was one belowthe gold star called a superstar and that had a rotating breech which opened a tiny Shoot to put the pellet in.

      Hey mate,
      You have excellent taste my friend haha. The BSA mags definitely aren't the best... we did a Super 10 review and you could hear the mag malfunctioning as I was filming.
      Credit to this mag on test though it was the original mag that came with the rifle and it seemed pretty good.
      The 77 is definitely heavier that the Eclipse but it is incredibly well balanced.. I'd still take the Eclipse if I was doing a long day's shoot though.
      The Superstar is what we need to finally put our little competition to rest, to what I've heard from some of our comments they were a cracking rifle in the day.
