Thanks to Tyler, The Creator, ASAP Rocky, Tracey Emin, and all the other artists featured in this one. Feeling confused or overwhelmed by balancing interests and time is an issue close to my practice, so I hope some of the thoughts I've got together here resonate for people out there.

Many years ago at a job when i was in my 20’s…I had a lot of creative pursuits. One day I announced to a co worker that I was going to start repainting old furniture and maybe learn how to re-upholster. She suddenly blurted out…”You just need to find one thing and stick to it. You are all over the place. Finding one thing you like to do and sticking to it is the key to success.” I know she meant well but my gut was shouting, “STFU!” I never forgot it. But I never could just find one thing to stick to, except painting, now for a solid 9 years. It took all those other explorations to get to the painting. They all contributed experiences to who I am right now. I still have other interests but I stick to painting as my constant and everything else informs my painting. If you need to create, just create. All creative pursuits are honing your creative process and adding a tapestry of color to your life as a whole.

Definitely understand. I have had tons of different interests over the years that I got into. Really fun. A year and half ago I started a woodworking channel. One of the best things I have done. I think that has forced me to get better faster. Keep doing your thing man.

Your garden analogy reminds me of the idea of “creative crop rotation.” When one lets a creative pursuit rest, and then tends to another, it allows for more vitality and depth when it’s returned to.

I changed my mind set and now one creative outlet impacts my other art forms. When I'm doing photography, I'm also building my painting references and catalog. When I'm running, I'm finding photography inspiration. When I'm teaching art lessons I'm improving my own skills. When I host figure drawing events, I'm building my drawing skills and in turn my painting skills. When I'm editing photos, I'm refining my drawing and painting composition and color grading skills. It's all linked together.

So grateful you mentioned the “lock in” perspective, I feel like I am a living experiment and I’m excited to allow myself time to bloom and let life flow the way it’s going rather than “gripping for control” like you mentioned

This is just what I needed to hear. I constantly beat myself up jumping from one creative project to another and with this carry around a restlessness and guilt at not focusing in on one form. I love your constant curiosity and willingness to embrace each journey!

I think building your own aesthetic through your own principles and codes by being disciplined and not waiting for the muse all the time to come around for you to create art is the best way to be an artist and gain respect from the audience for being different and standing on your own ground regardless of criticism and critiques.

I've been thinking about that last poi nt a lot, where you'll have a lifetimes work to look back on. It relaxes me to not put so much pressure on the one project in hand. I don't go into a project thinking about how to reflect myself, I just let the work do that for me and when I look back I can then see how the work reflected me.

How do you find an original way to do something, but in a creative fashion? I’m creating an online school and community dedicated to self improvement, truth seeking in the universe (quantum physics, ancient history, etc) and mental health. Having a hard time getting CREATIVE with it. To where it’s ALSO an art piece, and something ageless, priceless and infinitely self generating.

I'm watching the rest of this vid later (bedtime) but I wanted to compliment you on the tape it ad. Best ad I've seen on youtube, ever, I think - because you mean it. Too bad I'm on android, otherwise I'd use it because my voicenotes get misnamed by android because I have to click 3 times to be able to rename them and android always fumbles up the auto naming bc I'm making notes in a different language than english.

Thanks Barrrt - I'm glad you picked up the fact I really did hope Tape It would support some of the audience here. I've spoken to enough mates who make music, and had my own long history with messy voice memos to know there's space to make the default phone apps better. Thanks for taking the time to drop into the comments and let me know I've done a good job - that's nice.
