You guys are actually both right! Joe was from London and when the Reputation era happened she moved to London for that year when she went into hiding. She's saying So Long to Joe and to the love that they had when they lived there AND to the city itself! 😄 (In my humble opinion)
PS-Funny you mention Shakespeare! When she sings "Oh the tragedy" that's a specific Shakespearean reference, since he was from London & a large percentage of what he wrote were called 'Tragedies". He wrote tragedies, comedies and sonnets!
I know it’s such a sad and serious song, but that “Oh the tragedy” felt out of place because it came off sarcastic in a song that’s so heartbreaking. I still love the song though. It’s amazing and one of the saddest songs she’s ever written 😢

Having lived in London for a year of Theatre school, I took that as both a Shakespearean Tragedy reference, since Shakespeare's Globe Theater is in London, as well as commenting on the drama of the way the relationship ended, that it just felt maybe so performative? I mean, the premise for so many of her young love songs is predicated on the idea that she loved the story of Romeo and Juliet, but wanted it to have a happier ending and you can see her kind of doing that in a lot of her other songs after Love Story.
It also may be a reference back to You're Losing Me where she said "how long could we be a sad song til we were too far gone to bring back yo life?" Saying "oh the tragedy" is really jarring, I agree with you, but it also sort of sounds like what she may have been hearing from other people or how she maybe imagined what people in the media or in the public would say about her having issues with Joe. They might be o like " Oh, it's so tragic (eye roll) She's broken up with another guy!" about their issues in a sarcastic way. At least those were some of the references my brain decided to pull up😉
@@megandelynn6114 That’s actually exactly what I meant. It almost felt like a somewhat sarcastic response to the media and everyone immediately jumping on to the news, like “How Did It End?” hints at. I just thought it was out of place, but I do get what you mean about the performative feel to it. Maybe that’s what she was going for.

There's plenty of songs for me, whether it's Taylor or other artists, where I love a song but there's something in it that sort of takes me out of the story or makes me not like the song and it could be a word, a phrase, something instrumental maybe, and I just CAN'T anymore! I call it the musical equivalent of someone "getting the ick"! 😂
@@Sweetmuffins0018it's only the first time when she says "Oh, the tragedy" that it seems theater-esque. I think that's because she's almost mocking herself for the work she put in & the tears she cried for nothing...
The second time she says tragedy it's not in that tone at all. The "How much tragedy?" Is in the middle of her yelling at London Boy because how much sad did he think she had before she would implode. This time the So long London is about time instead of leaving. She's pissed that her now ex is accusing her of abandoning the relationship when she's the one that held it together for years.
The third part she doesn't sing tragedy at all. She has said her final words to her ex and has getting color back into her cheeks. She can say good bye to the life she had in London now. It's for the best.

The opening part is done to the tune of Big Ben. Beautiful, but heartbreaking.

Was it Knox Hill or ThatSingerReacts? I love both of their reaction videos because they both appreciate her artistry. ThatSingerReacts always says her lines are basically bars. Knox is a rapper too and he really breaks down her lyrics well.

This song is connected to “You’re losing me” I stoped CPR (remember the heart beat in You’re losing me? I’m just getting color back into my face.. in you’re losing me she talks about her face being grey..

This particular song is one of my favorites. It's haunting, dark, and a bit creepy, i love it. It's fucking brilliant!
You guys reacted to “You’re Losing Me,” right? If you remember in that song the repeated line is “Stop. You’re losin’ me. I can’t find a pulse. My heart won’t start anymore. For you.” So the whole CPR metaphor for reviving the relationship is basically the ending to “You’re Losing Me.” Also, the line about just getting color back into her face seems to connect back to “My face was gray, but you wouldn’t admit that we were sick” in “You’re Losing Me.” Her mind is something else.
She also talks about “the hospital” in another song. I love how she has call backs to other songs.
The beginning sounds like the bells of Big Ben in London.
I feel like Taylor would probably carry any relationship because she gives so much and she does so much. We see what she does with her fans. We see what she does with her friends and how much she gives. I hope she find someone who gives as much as she does.

One of my favourite things about this song is that one looks at the title and thinks "this is a farewell", which, to be fair, is what it means initially. But she then shifts it to mean some kind of frustration over something that lasted for a long time but came to be nothing: "I'm pissed off you let me give you that youth for free for so long, London" and "I'm just mad as hell cause I loved this place for so long, London"
I love that there are so many guys starting to appreciate Taylor's music and realizing that her songs aren't just sappy teenage music. Her lyrics are poetry, and she is a genius at hiding clues and hints in her songs. There are layers upon layers in her music, which gives you a clue into how clever and artistic she actually is.
