  • So you think that you might want to become an #expat that's great, but you might not be aware of what kind of considerations or questions you should even be asking to start down the path of making good decisions or knowing how to get good answers. There are many things to consider. Will you live abroad full time? Where makes sense for you. Will you be stationary or move around? What are your goals? Will you work or retire? Will you be a digital nomad? Must you work in the place that you will live? Do you need a second (or third) passport?

    Questions to ask/answer for yourself:
    Rent vs own
    Drive or ride
    Cook/dine-out
    Urban, suburban, or rural
    Immersion or enclave
    Fully retired, investor, business
    Healthcare concerns quelled
    That’ll keep ‘em busy

One of the biggest challenges so far is banking. If you don't have a physical address in the USA you have to use an address of a relative or friend. Many mailing services have flagged addresses for "Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA)" and the banks will close your bank account.

That's on the "home country" side, for those that aren't clear.

@@ScottAlanMillerVlog 100% a stupid law enacted under the guise of the Patriot Act and Homeland Security. Even thought the Patriot Act is no longer a law (it expired) many of the laws related to it still exist. A law that doesn't seem as if it would really do anything to stop terrorism and money laundering if you can just pick a random address to use as your physical address and the banks aren't required to check, but if you give the bank your REAL address and it's flagged wrong your accounts are closed.

Totally unrelated to the above video, but I'd be curious to know about "nerd" culture in Nicaragua, ie related to things like comic books, video games, table top games, anime, etc. I poked around a little bit and found advertisements for a couple small comic and anime cons, and I have to assume that Managua must have a couple comic book or gaming stores. What about other cities? Is there much of a subculture for these kinds of things as a North American might think of it? Personally I'm interested in video game tournaments, does much of that exist there?
Is all the above thought of as just kid stuff, or will you find adults that consider such pursuits legitimate hobbies? And if so how much of it just exported pop culture of NA (or Japan since I mentioned anime and video games) versus more home grown or at least of the Spanish speaking world?

Excellent outlining of a comprehensive decision making process. A lot different than just following the herd to the same handful of saturated places.
A question: What do you think of Numbeo's Quality of Life rating system?

      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Місяць тому

Numbeo is okay, it has its problems. Like an SAT test, it tests for a western perspective. So it's still misleading. But better than many things. There isn't a good way to actually do what they do, so they make do. But for example, they test for a cup of coffee. But coffee isn't the drink of choice everywhere. So it is going to be most costly in places that are poor because that's less likely to be where coffee is available.

So many people talk about being a digital nomad. How do people become a digital nomad? 😀

I've been a DN since 1999. My job was 100% online and I had no ties to any location. It's just something you do, doesn't require any ... planning.

My biggest question is what to with my kids without residency or citizenship if they decide to stay in Nicaragua? Doesn't make sense for me to work in Nicaragua nor do I need to, but how do I ensure my kids' future here? They're only 5 and 6 and we plan on staying for the long haul

Did not know that! Sorry. I have been in Ecuador for 10 years, btw.
