@20:30 That is, in fact, the legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach. Over 1,000 different artists have recorded Bacharach's songs. He has forgotten more of his own hits he than other songwriters have songs! You probably know many of his songs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_written_by_Burt_Bacharach
Mr. Baccarat was nt only a legend with the songs he sang, he was also a powerhouse songwriter with over 114 songs to his credit.. many of them VERY memorable.. His working relationship with Dionne Warwick was VERY productive.. Some of their better known collaborations include "Do You Know the Way to Santa Fe", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and "I say a little prayer for ". Some other songs that he wrote that you MIGHT have heard , "Raindrops Keep falling on My Head " with B J Thomas from the movie soundtrack to the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (which is well WELL worth the watch) , "This Guy's in Love With You" with Herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass , and "What's New , Pussycat" with the legendary Tom Jones.
We didn't make you watch everything to get ALL of the references. The black spy suit worn by Vanessa was a reference to a spy TV series, "The Avengers." Diana Rigg, the actress who married Bond in "Her Majesty's Secret Service" played in the Avengers and wore the suit. 60s movies and TV shows were prone to have musical / dance scenes, which is why the opener was like that. The musical interludes with the fast camera cuts were used in 60s TV shows like "The Monkees" and "Laugh-In," with the musicians being a reference to the Monkees and the blonde dancer in a bikini being a reference to Goldie Hawn, from "Laugh-In." Robert Wagner (Number Two) played lead in a 60s spy-type TV show "It Takes a Thief."
@@rcrawford42 Are you sure? I think it comes from "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machines" (1965). This was followed up with "Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs" (1966). The term "fembot" may come from the "The Bionic Woman" series.
Mike Myers wrote all 3 Austin Powers movies as love letters to classic spy movies because he used to watch them with his late father. He's been wanting to make a 4th movie for a long time, but he wants to make sure he's happy with the story and not just make it to make it.
the Love Guru , that very much could have been Austin Powers 4: love guru. Because in the 1st Austin Powers, he dons a similar get up to what he wears in the love guru. so, had they done that instead of that disaster, we'd be waiting for number 5.
the working title for Austin Powers4 was "Thunderballs," and supposedly the plot was Austin going back to the 80s, scott being the bad guy [taking over for his dad] and dr evil's new lease on life as a popular tv therapist- like dr phil...
Liberace was a famous pianist and singer who wore very glittery clothes. He's actually the person who turned Elvis onto the more garish clothes he'd later wear. And he was also very obviously gay, but because he was also very conservative, he never came out publicly, but the men he hooked up with told a different story.
back then people would say that Liberace & Little Richard were just "flamboyant." "You know how entertainers are..." when i was a little kid, i didn't even know that The Village People were gay. i thought they were just bad ass dudes: a soldier, an Indian, a biker, a cop and a construction worker. so manly & tough!
@chuckleezodiac24 Not all of the Village People were gay. The construction worker (David Hodo) was very private about his personal life and never spoke about his sexuality. He could be either. However, Victor Willis, the lead singer and policeman, and Glenn Hughes, the biker, were both straight despite their characters' contrary persona. Willis was even married to Phylicia Ayers-Allen (later Phylicia Rashad) of Cosby show fame for a few years. The only ones openly gay were Felipe Rose (the Indian), Randy Jones (the cowboy), and Alex Briley (the soldier).
And the bass player is Matthew Sweet, whose song "Girlfriend" had probably my favorite video of the 90's. Well, number two behind "In Bloom" by Nirvana? Definitely top five no matter what.
The thing about Robert Wagner ( Number 2) is he actually lived that lifestyle in the 60's. He is authentic, you need to see him in the original Pink Panther with Peter Sellers who was rumored to be in a relationship with Princess Margaret (Queen Elizabeth's sister) and of course he was Dr Strangelove.
“Mama” Cass Eliot was a Folk Singer both solo and as a part of The Mamas and The Papas. Gorgeous voice and for some reason there is an urban legend that she choked to death on a ham sandwich when she actually passed away in her sleep from a heart attack. She also was a guest star for Scooby Doo
Glad you brought this up. The ham sandwich tale is so unfair to Mama Cass. It's unfortunate that Mike Myers wrote it into this film but of course it was normal for the time.
@@Pravda3 I will say in his defense, this is a very persistent urban legend and also Austin Powers was made while the internet was still in its infancy. It’s very possible that he thought that was how she died, it’s just unfortunate that this movie has become one of the biggest perpetrators of the legend.
Scott was played by Seth Green, who is well known for Buffy the Tv series, That 70's Show, Robot Chicken, and the voice of Chriss Griffin in Family Guy.
28:20 - Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) was a member of The Mamas and The Papas, if you've heard California Dreamin' (among a lot of their 60's hits). She was overweight and died from a heart attack. A friend of hers had passed along misinformation that she died from choking on a ham sandwich (Autopsy was just "heart attack" and no drugs).
"Check this out, each and every one of you. Compilation tape, of my own making. I call this the "Greatest Zooks Album". Featuring artists like, well I got some Hendrix on there, some Joplin, Mama Cass, Belushi... all great artists that asphyxiated on their own vomit!" - Cereal Killer "Hackers"
More context for those interested: The heart attack was brought on by years of dieting, and at the time, she was on her most extreme one yet. A short time before she passed, she fainted while waiting to come on stage at the Johnny Carson show, if that gives you any idea of how unwell she was. I believe her ex-husband cracked the ham sandwich joke at her expense, and then others repeated it, some of whom claimed to be her friends. Her life was an all-around tragedy simply because she was overweight but too talented to ignore.
@@crose7412 By today's standards she wouldn't be considered "enormous"... she was under 300 lbs. Morbidly obese, yes. It was the combo of weight, yo-yo dieting to lose the weight, drug use, and sedentary lifestyle... which all led to a heart attack.
Robert Wagner's career goes back to the 1950s, which didn't do that well in movies, but transitioned to several television series, including regularly appearing on NCIS as Tony DeNozza Sr.. He was twice married to actress Natalie Wood, who you saw as a very little girl in _Miracle on 34th Street_ , and who died in a tragic accident during their second marriage.

Despite the comments on Patreon, there's no need to stop watching the James Bond movies after seeing Austin Powers. There are still many great Bond films to come.
When an actor like Carrie Fisher have serious drug issues it's difficult for them to get work due to insurance companies not wanting to back them on a movie. For example, she was supposed to play Miss Scarlet on the movie Clue but was dropped due to the insurance issue even though the director wanted to work with her.
That's not why Fisher was in this. She'd had decent roles before this. She was probably quietly on the screenwriting team and heppened to be there - she's a well known "script polisher".
I had this on VHS, and there were some after-credit scenes, where some of the families of the nameless guards Austin killed are notified of their loved ones' deaths.
I SO remember those! Especially some edited endings like a James Bond movie. Like Vanessa and Austin on a rubber raft and Vanessa somehow got into a bikini.
I always forget how hilarious these movies are until I watch someone reacting to them for the first time and than I can’t stop laughing at both the clips and the reactions.

The guy playing the piano on top of the bus was a legend from the 50s and 60s, Burt Bacharach, who wrote songs for many singing artists, and his stuff was all over the radio back in the day. Also he wrote a few Bond 007 opening scores.
Hey Ashleigh, -Mike Myers plays both Austin Powers and Dr. Evil; Mike Myers is one of a handful of actors who actually shaved their heads for roles as he believed that when actors use "the skull cap" for shaved heads that it never looked real. He's wearing a wig for Austin. -The theme song that everyone's dancing to at the beginning of the song is called the "Soul Bossa Nova" by Quincy Jones and this is one of his many, many hits including Michael Jackson's Thriller, the theme song to "Sanford and Son" and "We Are the World". He's also the father of Rashida Jones. -The cowboy in the bathroom was Tom Arnold; he was married to Rosanne Barr and starred in "True Lies" with Arnold Schwarzenegger. -Scott Evil is played by Seth Green. He was Oz on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and is the voice of Chris Griffin on "Family Guy" "Is Burt Bacharach a real person?" Yo, you hurt my feelings with that one! -Burt Bacharach co-wrote "What The World Needs Now Is Love" and "The Look of Love" which was the name of the song that was playing when Austin got into the hot tub with Alotta. -Yes, that's Carrie Fisher! -Mama Cass sang with the "Mamas and the Papas" -Reebok had shoes that you could "pump up". -Liberace was a world famous singer and pianist who was known for his quick wit. -The photo shoot during the end credits made sense as Liz Hurley was an actual model. And finally, the entire persona of Dr. Evil including the pinky held to the mouth and his speech patterns are based on Lorne Michaels who was his boss on SNL...I think he still runs the place...
Austin Powers is less a parody & more a homage to Bond. Despite being born in Canada, Myers parents were from Liverpool, England. Myers said that the movie and the character were inspired by the British films, music and comedy of the 1960s and 70s his father had introduced him to as a child. “After my dad died in 1991, I was taking stock of his influence on me as a person and his influence on me with comedy in general. So Austin Powers was a tribute to my father, who [introduced me to] James Bond, Peter Sellers, the Beatles, The Goodies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore." Myers also said hearing the Burt Bacharach song "The Look of Love" on the radio led to him reminiscing about the 1960s, which helped inspire the movie.

The second Austin Powers movie is called the Spy Who Shagged Me. The title is a parody of the title of the next James Bond movie that you need to watch, The Spy Who Loved Me. The Spy Who Shagged Me introduces Fat Bastard and Mini Me. The Spy Who Loved Me introduces Jaws, the metal mouthed villain

"It's my happening baby, and it freaks me out!" is a line from the movie Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, from a script by the late movie critic Roger Ebert. There are so many Easter Eggs and quotes/allusions/references in this film, it would take me hours to list them all.
Always reminds me of the song "L.A." by The Fall - "This is not happening, and it freaks me out." Which I guess was a reference to Valley of the Dolls.
Fun fact: the brunette seen in the little music interludes with Austin Powers fronting a rock band is Susanna Hoffs from the Bangles. Her husband was one of the producers for this movie.
The Austin Powers films also parody the spoofy American version, "Our Man Flint." The fembots were taken from that series, which are hilarious in their right.
The brunette guitar player in the band on the cut scenes was Susanna Hoffs from The Bangles. Frau Farbissina was based on the evil woman in From Russia with Love. She arrived in the hotel room at the end and tried to kill bond with the poison dagger in the shoe. The actor who played Random Task ended up being a legit, real-life Dateline Special monster. Another great Mike Meyers Movie is How I married an Axe Murderer.
The shoes that blew powder in Austin's face were Nike Airs. They were a real thing briefly. There were rubber bladders in them that you pumped up to the fit you want. They weren't great, hence, they weren't around long. There's also a joke about them in Robin Hood: Men In Tights.
Scott Evil is played by Seth Green who played a recurring werewolf character in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (TV series) and later voiced many sketches on Robot Chicken
The writing for this film was incredible, and the delivery was unbelievable. It really took over the zeitgeist for the following months. And because it was such an extreme spoof of James Bond, everyone was in on the jokes.

The secret agent genre was extremely popular in the 60s and 70s. This was due to the Cold War. There was more than just 007. When they talk about British agents there was Michael Cain who had a series of movies with a character called “Harry Palmer”. No joke. He was like Powers…wore framed glasses, wasn’t overly good looking and needed dentistry work based upon American standards. Then there was “Matt Helm” starring Dean Martin and “Our man Flynt” starring James Coburn. TV had its spies “The Avengers” starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg (who at least once wore a leather catsuit like Mimi Rogers did in Austin Powers). There was also “The Man from UNCLE”. There was also a western 007 type show called “The Wild Wild West” starring Robert Conrad.
There were also the spy novels of John Le Carre, the most famous of which was _The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,_ which was made into a film starring Richard Burton.
Yes, it's misleading for people to say this is a James Bond parody. It's more of a parody of those wild movies that were influenced by James Bond, and of 60s movies in general. Heck, the first time I (and many people) ever saw Mike Myers was in an SNL sketch that he wrote called "The 1960s Movie". There was a direct line between that sketch and Austin Powers, and Myers clearly has a lot of love for that era.
'North By Northwest' (1959), 'The Manchurian Candidate' (1962), 'Charade' (1963), 'Fail Safe' (1964), 'Our Man Flint' (1966), 'In Like Flint' (1967), 'The Day of the Jackal' (1973), 'Three Days of the Condor' (1975), and 'The Thirty Nine Steps' (1978).
The little groovy dance sequences are an homage to the variety show Laugh In, where everybody was very mod, and they always had those little segues between the skits.

He has forgotten more of his own hits he than other songwriters have songs! You probably know many of his songs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_written_by_Burt_Bacharach
And, of course, "What The World Needs Now Is Love" is one of his
For once, the term "legendary" is entirely deserved. Bacharach was a towering talent.
He wrote The Lok of Love which was used in the Bond comedy "Casino Royal"
And don't forget Hal David, who wrote the lyrics to most of Bacharach's hits.
The fembots came straight from Bond knock-off "In Like Flint" starring James Coburn.
Robert Wagner was in the series Hart To Hart, and plays Tony DiNozzo, Sr. in the NCIS shows. Jr. is a film fan as well as a federal agent.
Yes!

You're not far off. Guru Pitka was supposed to be a character in one of the movies, as Austin's guru, but he got cut.
He also recently did a show called The Pentaverate, on Netflix.
the working title for Austin Powers4 was "Thunderballs," and supposedly the plot was Austin going back to the 80s, scott being the bad guy [taking over for his dad] and dr evil's new lease on life as a popular tv therapist- like dr phil...
AP4 wouldn’t work because Dr. Evil became good after finding out that they were brothers.
Tom Arnold was surprisingly good in True Lies. But this movie has his funniest line ever.
They only get more absurd and funny as they continue in the trilogy, some of the very best comfort comedies ❤️
Liberace was a famous pianist and singer who wore very glittery clothes. He's actually the person who turned Elvis onto the more garish clothes he'd later wear.
And he was also very obviously gay, but because he was also very conservative, he never came out publicly, but the men he hooked up with told a different story.
back then people would say that Liberace & Little Richard were just "flamboyant." "You know how entertainers are..."
when i was a little kid, i didn't even know that The Village People were gay. i thought they were just bad ass dudes: a soldier, an Indian, a biker, a cop and a construction worker. so manly & tough!
@@chuckleezodiac24 "Manly and tough" aren't in opposition to being gay.
He also sued everyone that claimed he was gay.

This movie wasn't just a parody of James Bond movies, but of 1960's British movies in general, especially the comedies.
And the two "Flint" American playboy spy movies from the 60's.
Speaking of British comedy, I am reminded of Benny Hill.
Not knowing that Mike Myers was also Dr. Evil is something we'll chalk up to Covid brain 😂

Robert Wagner? Wasn't he in the Hart to Hart series?
@@AsehpeYup and very few years people start paying attention to His wife’s Natalie Wood’s death and claims he did it.

Also, the guy who plays the younger version of Number 2 is and/or was his son-in-law.
Dr. Strangelove was played by Peter Sellers.
She was also a regular on Julie Andrews' variety show.
And an awesome role/song in HR Puff'N'Stuff movie.
I believe the rumor was originally started so people wouldn't think she died from drugs...like a lot of other musicians were doing at the time.
Scott was played by Seth Green, who is well known for Buffy the Tv series, That 70's Show, Robot Chicken, and the voice of Chriss Griffin in Family Guy.
Your maniacal laugh was awesome...it cracked me up
28:20 - Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) was a member of The Mamas and The Papas, if you've heard California Dreamin' (among a lot of their 60's hits).
@Billis75 "Overweight"?? She was enormous. Great singer though.
More context for those interested:
The heart attack was brought on by years of dieting, and at the time, she was on her most extreme one yet.
@@j.munday7913 Was she skinny after an "extreme" diet?
@@crose7412 By today's standards she wouldn't be considered "enormous"... she was under 300 lbs. Morbidly obese, yes. It was the combo of weight, yo-yo dieting to lose the weight, drug use, and sedentary lifestyle... which all led to a heart attack.

The girls chasing him in the opening credits was a parody of The Beatles opening in the film A Hard Day's Night.
The old guy on the bus singing was Burt Bacharach. He wrote and composed most or all of the music back in the 60's used in this movie

In all fairness she had to go into rehab right before shooting began for Clue, that is why she was replaced.
That's not why Fisher was in this. She'd had decent roles before this. She was probably quietly on the screenwriting team and heppened to be there - she's a well known "script polisher".
@@dnish6673 Yeah she was a well known script doctor, and was writing novels at the same time. Girl was plenty busy.
I had this on VHS, and there were some after-credit scenes, where some of the families of the nameless guards Austin killed are notified of their loved ones' deaths.

The guy playing the piano on top of the bus was a legend from the 50s and 60s, Burt Bacharach, who wrote songs for many singing artists, and his stuff was all over the radio back in the day. Also he wrote a few Bond 007 opening scores.
You have earned this, Ashleigh, through your hard work on your Bond assignment!
Hey Ashleigh,
-Mike Myers plays both Austin Powers and Dr.
He was Oz on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and is the voice of Chris Griffin on "Family Guy"
"Is Burt Bacharach a real person?" Yo, you hurt my feelings with that one!
-Burt Bacharach co-wrote "What The World Needs Now Is Love" and "The Look of Love" which was the name of the song that was playing when Austin got into the hot tub with Alotta.
-Yes, that's Carrie Fisher!
-Mama Cass sang with the "Mamas and the Papas"
-Reebok had shoes that you could "pump up".
So Austin Powers was a tribute to my father, who [introduced me to] James Bond, Peter Sellers, the Beatles, The Goodies, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore."
Myers also said hearing the Burt Bacharach song "The Look of Love" on the radio led to him reminiscing about the 1960s, which helped inspire the movie.
Bob's Big Boy is a real restaurant. We had one where I lived growing up (not there anymore), and I always had to run up and hug the big statute of the Big Boy.

I think Fat Bastard is the one bad thing about the Austin Powers franchise. I can't stomach those gross fat jokes.

Robert Wagner is best known for his role in the eighties television show Hart to Hart. He recently had a resurgence in the television show NCIS where he played Anthony DiNozzo Sr. He was also known for being married to the actress Natalie Woods at the time of her mysterious death.
He is actually considered a suspect in the death of Natalie Wood.
And that movie was a not-quite sequel to a trite cliched dramatic movie called simply Valley of the Dolls.

The shoes that blew powder in Austin's face were Nike Airs. They were a real thing briefly. There were rubber bladders in them that you pumped up to the fit you want. They weren't great, hence, they weren't around long. There's also a joke about them in Robin Hood: Men In Tights.

Greene is also in the Weird AL "White and Nerdy" video
Seth Green was cocreator of Robot Chicken
Green was even in the Buffy movie, but his scenes were cut but there was a picture of him on a VHS box

Bingo!
The 1960’s also had the TV spy genre parody Get Smart co-created by Mel Brooks and starring Don Adams and Barbara Feldon.
23:41 That must be a nod to the classic Scottish comedy 'Gregory's Girl' where Gregory does the same thing.
The little groovy dance sequences are an homage to the variety show Laugh In, where everybody was very mod, and they always had those little segues between the skits.
