Hi Ashley, as someone that’s worked in dealerships, things can be a bit deceptive by the nice sales after sales manager etc. they’re always extremely nice to you, but the moment you leave.. it’s back to reality of them just dismissing you and your problem, leaving it parked up for a while, calling you back saying it’s fixed then being nice to you again.

I had a similar problem about ten years ago, year old car, bought through a dealership, endless running problem. I kept taking it back, they couldn't find anything wrong despite 'taking it miles on a road test'. So I stuck a hair from the dash to the steering wheel one day and left it with them. When I went back they said they couldn't find a problem, as you've guessed the hair was still there.
So I sent my Exocet down there. My 5'2" tall wife.
they were all sitting round doing paperwork when the door crashed open. "RIGHT, MY HUSBAND IS 6'5" AND WEIGHS 18 STONE BUT IT'S NOT HIM YOU HAVE WORRY ABOUT, IT'S ME, NOW GET THE F****** THING SORTED.'
They got the thing sorted. Sometimes there's only one approach they understand.

That's basically SOP for many. Get their valet guys to wash it, hand it back saying "we did X", when in reality they did nothing. You still have a problem and "we can fit it in, no problem. Bring it back, sir, In a month's time - but we don't have a courtesy car". They know full well you can't keep going without a car for days at a time and will eventually get sick of it. Then it's "we're waiting for parts from Japan/Germany/France/Venus/the magical kingdom of zodd" Keeping the car for 7-10 days just to inconvenience you into giving up. Or they'll just straight-up deny there is an issue. Eventually offering you a low-ball trade in deal that they will be astounded you reject.
It's all mind games to grind you down into giving up.

People these days just don't fight for what is right. When I bought my Astra in 2019 there was a big hole in the rear seat, the guy said, "It's just a cig burn!". I fought them and got the seat replaced! The burn was in an area where it would have worsened over time. I worked for a premium brand dealership for several years. This is common practice by management across the industry. Fixing a problem vehicle to the tune of a loss is an absolute last resort and normally forced by a court case threat or highly persistent customer. It's much more likely they just palm it off to a less knowledgeable customer and push towards their monthly targets, of which everything revolves around.

I worked in a Ford main dealership (a very well known one) in the 1970's. As someone has already said, they are as nice as possible to the customer's face, but once he's gone they have nothing but contempt. All I can say about cars and reliability etc etc is that I bought my first Toyota in 1996. I have had about 14 different ones since and I have never even changed a light bulb. The only "problem" I did have was a Land Cruiser that needed new batteries and alternator after 11 years and over 200,000 kms. They were the original parts from new. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Thanks for this video. Here's a quick odd story.
We traded in our VW to a VW dealer. The car was in my name. About 2 months later we got a letter from someone very kindly wanting to ask some questions about the car's history because something didn't add up on their end.
Here's the thing - the letter was addressed to my wife - no mention of me.
The only way this could have happened was that the log book was changed to my wife's name after we had traded it in to them.
I guess it gets a better price if it says previous female owner?
It was done without our consent.
Guess it fits in with the emissions scandal culture of the brand.
    Shady AF.
Thanks for confirming this is how the whole chain works and good luck on your next videos and cars.

We had loads of problems with it, kangarooing all over the place felt like it was out of control making it difficult to pull out of junctions ect. After months we rejected the car and as compensation because it was a problem with the engine they gave us the option to receive a new Octavia VRS with the 2.0 engine. I have in the past dealt with numerous dealerships, selling different makes of car. As my late father got older he would let me do or arrange his next purchase. My Dad in later years enjoyed buying a new car every 12 to 18 months. One particular car that cost over £21,000 new, he wanted to trade in when it was 12 months old. We went to the same dealer, but a different branch, we were aware that he would lose a out by about 30/35%, but weren’t prepared to lose £10,000 when the car only had done less that 5,000 miles and they had an identical car with over 10,000 up for sale at £16,950.
We then went to a different dealer, selling a different make of car, purchased a car for £25,500 and that dealer was more than happy to give us £15,500 on the trade in. It is always best to shop around for the best deal.

My first car (which is also my current car) was bought through a big dealer, and fraught with issues too. Biggest standout issues were: buckled and badly welded alloys, a battery on its very last legs, a water damaged ABS pump, and air bubbles in the fuel lines which sometimes meant the car simply wouldn't start without manual priming. I brought the car back to the dealers, they then claimed the air bubbles were normal but "fixed" it anyway. The next day, my car wouldn't start: air bubbles galore. To top it off, the priming bulb was now dripping fuel and the "fix" amounted to a bit of gaffa tape...
All fixed eventually, some fought for with the dealer and some paid out of pocket. They do try to take you for a fool though!

It turned out it had been in a huge accident that cost over 15 grand and that's not counting the body parts. The carfax was clean which showed none of it. The only reason I found out was because I came into problems with the car and the dealership said to go through warranty which that dealership wouldn't handle. So, I took it to another dealership and they recognized the car and showed me the history.

I went through two Golfs in 6 months from a VW main dealer. Both under 2 years old.
The first (a Golf 8) had so many software/sensor issues and weird behaviour that I gave it back within 30 days. The second (a Golf 7) turned out to have been in an accident and repaired in a way you wouldn't pick up on initially, but became quite evident once you knew. With that one I went through a long protracted process before they finally gave me my money back.
Both cars were back on sale within a matter of days, although the second they didn't seem to be making an effort to sell (no pictures) and I think they were trying to offload via other means. Interestingly it still shows as untaxed 6 months later.
What I learned from this is that a VW main dealer can be happy to polish a t**d and put it on the forecourt and not to expect any genuine care and attention to detail that you might expect from the "approved used" process.
Will probably buy new cars in future as the stress wasn't worth the saving and my reason for going used at that time was the unavailability of new cars.

We own a VW ID.3. Now please folks, get over that it is an EV because that fact is totally irrelevant. I found the car used 27 months old with 11,800 miles sitting in the back of a BMW dealership with the price dropping almost weekly.
It was an extremely good deal at the time (March 3rd 2023) but it did have one problem, a faulty 12v battery. Yes, the 12v battery, not the 62kWh traction battery. We took it to the local VW dealer to have the battery replaced under warranty as it was less than 3 years old which to be fair to them, they did replace.
They also had the car on their ramp and did a video and came up with a list of things to do including replacing tyres with a claimed 3.8mm of tread but when I checked with my Sealey digital gauge it read 4.2mm of tread on them still. I found this shocking.
Their "we can do this work for you" in total punt was almost £900 with the added "plus service items". As a matter of course I was getting the car serviced by a fully qualified HEVRA independent who did the full service including a comprehensive brake strip, check, clean and lube for just over £200. Incidentally they too checked the tread depths as part of their report and their measurements agreed with mine.
What VW missed though was that the wiper blades required replacement. They were clearly focusing on the high return items imo.
VW send me emails regularly trying to get the car through their doors for servicing, an "end of warranty" check, etc. It is annoying. They seem less enthusiastic to book it in for the impending software update which remains outstanding though. Just as well that it is not critical, eh?
We really like the car and are very pleased with it. It serves our needs very well. Horses four courses.
We are not so keen on the VW dealer experience though.

This is why I avoid using dealerships, small or large. They're likely to cut corners, and more in it to make a sale. It's why I buy private or from a car auction, you know more or less what you're getting. Cars from dealerships can end up being sold to consumers with a supposed service done even though if you bother to check the most common thing that they skip is the pollen filter.

When I gained the means to buy from dealerships, I have done because the cars that I bought privately - though I admit that they were older vehicles than I would buy from a dealer - would be scrapped within a year or two of buying them.
I've had issues with dealerships too, putting two back in for repair after purchase and to reject one car, but all got sorted without any cost to me thanks to consumer protections.

So, NO, you SHOULD NOT be out of pocket by a sizeable amount! So fair play to you for what you have done, and what you are going to do. Using the car for 700 miles after taking a deposit on it isn't on, the paperwork is drawn up at the time of deposit and you get a certain amount of cover/right to withdraw within a week or 1000 miles, if theyve used up most of that allowance it could put you in a sticky situation, plus nearly new low milage cars hold a premium and having a near 1000 extra miles will affect the value

I’ve found so many genuine folks at main dealers and have been looked after plenty of times……
However, once you’re in the service / finance / trade end of the business, the staff are under SO much pressure.
Imagine a service manager with a sales target! They just supposed to be fixing actual issues and doing routine servicing yes?
No. They have to inflate and expand all jobs and tasks, increase costs above booked rates and sell additional ‘Extras’ or face disciplinary action.
My worst financial experiences have been at the lying cheating hands of BMW and Porsche dealers.
Not one off situations either. 5-6 identical episodes with Porsche. I’ve even tried hinting in advance that I’ll not be paying over their quote or taking service work not recommended. That doesn’t even work and they just brazen it out and force you to do something and make it awkward. Again.

So jealous of you having that FoST, as a 140ps Fiesta owner. It's like my ultimate. Although part of me wants to go clutched automatic for my next car. I have been a victim of dealer shithousery as well, although when their sales manager discovered that I knew a thing or two about consumer rights (through my grandad who was a senior trading standards enforcer) he has been doing everything he can for me ever since. Sometimes I wonder if the young guys at dealerships, who are trained to do absolutely everything they can for a sale, sometimes go too far with their autonomy and cause trouble for their firms.

I'm trying not to be overly critical but I find it strange that you wouldn't expect it to be put straight up for sale. Just because it is up for sale doesn't mean that they can't continue to investigate the issue, it is only speculation that they are not. Basically they need to market that car in order to sell it, why 'waste' that marketing time. The dealership will know how long a car typically takes to sell, I doubt it is measured in days. Also Caveat emptor doesn't apply to retail car sales so the next buyer will be covered by the various selling regulations, as indeed you were. They will also get a used car warranty from the dealer and so really there is no reason in my opinion why you should feel aggrieved by them simply advertising, marketing the car.
You could always send in a "Mystery Shopper" to see if the dealership is being up front on the car's history if you are really concerned that the dealership might be being underhand or economical with the truth. But at this point they have simply marketed the car, which they have every right to do an at retail price irrelevant to what they bought it back from you.
An issue I think that does need addressing with used cars is the use, or purpose that some are put too which are not transparent to any subsequent owners. In this regard I am referring to cars that were previously press cars, ex driving instructor, ex mobility scheme cars and Private Hire / Taxis or Car Rental cars. There should be a system in place that clearly marks a car as having previously been used in any of these categories, then the buyer can decide if that is something they want to buy into.

Customers taking their cars there for a service, the garage having to fix damage after being damaged by the workshop in the carpark. After my car got written off I went to see a car from a dealer, doing a round trip of 150 miles, when I got to the dealer I couldn't drive the car because the clutch was awful, they tried to fob me off saying that all cars of that type had high clutches. I told them I'd had 3 cars of the same make and never had a problem. They said they'd fix the clutch so I figured a new clutch would be a bonus. A week later I picked up the car paid the money and drove two miles down the road to get some gas whereupon the car went into limp mode and immobilised. I called them and it eventually started again again, they said it just needed a good run. It got me back home and then my problems really started. 8 weeks later after a lot of faffing with the ECU and the throttle body being replaced I took it back to the dealer, two weeks later the car was fixed. It was a £12.00 micro plug to the throttle body. I lost so much work and money, I got no recompense. The car's running fine now. It was a complete pain in the rectum.

Interesting that you said the focus is a better driver's car because I bet a lot of people would turn their noses up at that because of the perceived class (and real price tag) that comes with VW/ Audi. Personally I've not been impressed with any feature of the Golf GTI or Audi A5 other than their pace and find their interiors to be poorly designed an quite tacky. I currently drive 2017 Astra 1.4 Turbo with most of the upgrades in the cabin and it is the best car that I've ever owned. The only thing I would change about it is the engine size - I had it in for an exhaust just after buying it and the dealership loaned me a GTC which was amazing.
Again, a lot of my Audi and VW acquaintances wouldn't be caught dead driving an Astra, but I plan on owning this one until it dies because it is such a good car to spend time in. The car that I had before that was a Corsa SE which we also really liked apart from its lack of grunt - so I might be a Vauxhall loyalist for a while.

They probably rely on the manufacturer's warranty. Sell it and hope nothing goes wrong and if it does just let the parts center deal with it. My cousin had an absolute nightmare with a Ford dealership as the car he bought developed a bad squeak from the front left days after buying it. They sent him to the parts center under warranty who then refused to repair it as they had identified the exact same fault when the car was bought by the dealership from the previous owner. They had sent it for an inspection after buying it, but never approved a repair and just sold it to my cousin as is. The parts center would have been left to cover the job and said it should have never been sold in that condition, actually telling my cousin he had a solid case against the dealership if he wished to sue. Even the parts centers hate the dealerships. If the dealership hadn't sent it for the inspection in the first place, the parts center would have just fixed it through the warranty, but as they had already identified the fault and the car was then sold without being repaired, it voided the warranty! After around eight weeks of arguments between my cousin, the dealership and the parts center, the dealership agreed to do a straight swap and he got another car of similar value. Absolute nightmare.

A lot of dealers advertise cars even before they have arrived from auction and then fix and rectify issues before the sale. You would like to think that they won't let it go out the door without rectifying it. With its well known issues evident on youtube they would be hard pressed to fight a consumer rights case claiming they were not aware of a known issue for the next person that buys it

The dealer will put it through the workshop , some do it as it arrives in, some do it when it's sold, how much work actually gets done is another thing.

Dealership i used to work in sent cars out the door regularly with known issues. Mechanics would argue with salesmen telling them the cars not going nowhere till its sorted, Salesmen would send it out anyway so they get there numbers knowing the car is going to be back but its not their problem so they don't care. Also while I'm here i will i add i nearly got sacked because a close friend came into look at a car and i told him not to buy it, it had a lot of paintwork done and the panel gaps where horrendous. HR and everything got involved but why should i let a friend pay 9k for a car when it wasn't worth that. He ended up buying the same spec car for the same price from somewhere else but it was in pristine condition another problem with dealerships is a computer makes up a price for the car it doesn't reflect the condition of them in the slightest

Volkswagen customer service has been absolutely shocking for my family. My stepmum bought a Golf R-Line and it had a fault with one of the fuel saving systems, the 2 cylinder shutoff would cut in and out when moving off, causing kangarooing. This problem is common with a lot of Golf 8 cars, and the dealership we bought it from said “it’s a characteristic of the car” and refused to fix it. Ended up swapping it for a Mercedes A220d.
If you want a good German car, buy a Merc.

I had a Kings Red Mk8 Golf GTI and kept it 4 months. Unbelievably poor in terms of issues and faults. Simple message, avoid the new golf and I have owned and loved 7 other golfs. I wouldnt trust most car dealers any further than i could throw them. Most will do anything to make money. Just had a particularly awful experience with a trader in Whitchurch Hampshire who tried to convince me a full service history could be confirmed by text message and the handwritten service stamps in the service book from different dealers (same handwriting) were genuine! Call out to Matt at Stratstone BMW in Hull who replaced a 340i after the first car had a major failure in the 1st month of ownership. General rule of thumb, be circumspect and never ever accept the first offer.

Glad you are going after them & hope you screw every penny out of them, like they screwed you.
Shame you did not leave your contact details hidden in the old car somewhere where the new owner could find them, so you could give them the whole story.
Your army of 'viewers' will no be keeping an eye out for that car, to see where it turns up. My guess is that they will now put it though the auctions, so they can distance themselves from it.

Wonder what their answer would be if a customer asked who the previous keepers were… would they tell them it was a VW press fleet, thrashed about by TopGear & then used as a driving school car? 😂

As an 'alternative' viewpoint..... Just as you wouldn't want that can "stood about" neither do the dealership. So as soon as it's on the yard, it's for sale. Be fair, they haven't actually sold it, with a fault, yet. They won't be preserving it in amber and putting it on a podium out front because it is broken. It's for sale so it needs to be advertised as such. Why miss a potential sale by delaying the advert? Get it online, get some interest going. Ok so they may not tell the new owner it had a fault. But they will need to fix it and need to sell it and there is still time for it to be fixed before any new owner takes delivery. Oh, and no, I'm not the dealership ;) Just trying to put another viewpoint for purposes of the devils avocado.

They haven't fixed it in 20 months, so why do you think that's going to change quickly now?
