If they made the lenses ballistic and clear, opened up the field of view and added, an even semi decent infrared and thermal camera to it hunters would be beating down their door to throw money at them. Oh and a gps land nav app with shortrange mesh net coms with something like ATAK force tracking.
I always feel like i shouldnt like you but do. Your videos are well made and you cover all your bases with a personality that ends up winning you over.
Oof, $2,000+ AR tech that has been out for 2 years now and I've never even heard of it... no wonder enterprise is their new focus. This tech is actually pretty cool, glass-type AR could be full of new potential, but when no one knows about it, the implementation isn't super user-friendly and it's expensive AF... that's gonna be tough. Thanks for sharing this video, always cool to learn of "new" niche tech and I think I would agree in not recommending this.
I feel like enterprise does make a lot more sense too as a potential market. I used to work at a small electronics company and remember talking to my coworker about how some AR goggles would have been perfect to project expected test point resistance next to the board
Agree, agree, agree! A few months ago, I had the opportunity to "lease" a magic leap one creator edition headset for one week from the University of Florida library (free for students). After much experience with VR from the library, I was very excited to see what this headset had to offer. I used it for about two hours total. There's just not much to it on the consumer side of things. Like yeah some of it is cool, but as you said, there is no twitter app! It's just not there yet, and for $2,300 are you kidding?? It definitely has some commercial applications, but seriously magic leap, what are you doing?
I was super pumped to use one of these and yeah it's mind-blowing initially, seeing objects tracked into your environment in AR, but then it quickly felt gimmicky. I think that was the lack of truly useful applications at least when I got to Demo it. I have the say the Quest has been phenomenal, untethered really helps feel immersed as you said, and now with hand Tracking making its way into games, it's really becoming a strong competitor. If AR can get up to speed on the FOV and obstructive feel of the Quest I reckon it'll have a bigger chance for uptake, but there also has to be truly practical reasons for a consumer to want to continue to put it on and not let it collect dust on a shelf. Fingers crossed the ML2 brings some improvements 🤞
Does this kit come with a developer library so that the clients can write their own augmented-reality apps? (in any general-purpose language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, ...) If not, then I think that this technology is doomed to fail no matter who the manufacturer is.
1. I think you’re going to save ppl a lot of money, 2. Aesthetically speaking, I really hope our future selves have better style haha 3. Great video, thanks Sam
Good point. We have one in our lab to study human perception in AR environment. Otherwise I don't see why anyone would buy a headset with such a price.
It's so interesting to see people's opinions of a potential apple AR headset before it's release. The mystery and the hype made it incredibly interesting. In such an unexpected turn of events, Apples VR headset(It is not an AR headset) is doing worse relative to the magic leap, considering the size of the company and the scale of the project. Now a magic leap 1 is like $100 and some people are trying to revive it for other use.
I found this video because I saw that Magic Leap is hiring graphics programmers, specifically in "health data visualization and management in acute and chronic care settings." Which is an interesting niche to focus on for now. I agree that this will likely never become a mainstream product, but I feel the same way about most XR in general, especially head-mounted AR like Hololens. VR has a much more compelling consumer use case to me and even then that's always going to be pretty niche.
I’ll eat my shoe if Apple glass shows up in 21 or 22. It’s on the way but with Apples strategy on this kind of thing I’m betting they’ll hold off until 2024 at the absolute earliest before we see a full fledged AR headset. I’m betting they release a half AR product first though, like glasses that just do some basics like notifications and context and then later release a more advanced iGlass pro that supports holograms and a full AR experience.
Magic Leap was all hype and little else. Even when they finally got around to shipping, MS were already out with the far superior Hololens 2 and they knew that it’s just not a technology that’s ready for consumers.
Would be good to compare this with other AR devices as the draw-card of ML is the light-wave image technology which is very difficult to make hence probably the high cost. Supposed to be more realistic and natural. Wonder if Apple will come up with similar technology to ML or to MS Holo Lens.
The headset just looks so...obstructive? I can’t imagine having a conversation with someone while one or both of us are wearing the ML 😂 Great video as always Sam!
I don't think any Augmented Reality goggle will work soon. We have the Hololens at work. I'm very impressed by the idea of the goggle and AR but not like how this is presented right now. Maybe if apple presents their own device.
@@samsheffer i've tried both the first one and gen 2 and i gotta say the second one is much better, the field of view is bigger and the hand gestures are more easily recognized than the first one, also it's lighter so it didn't slide down my head like gen 1
I want AR Glasses so I can use my phone like a laptop. The laptop has a big keyboard and screen. If by using AR glasses you could give your phone a virtual big screen and a virtual full-sized keyboard then I could see people getting AR glasses instead of getting a laptop or smartphone. I want the AR glasses to become the new form factor of the smartphone.
It does not do projection, it uses a display that just draws images on your field of view. The pixel design is the major reason why this looks smooth. Though, if you use glasses they would not work too well. Also if you have sensitive eyes this give will you a huge headache, so wearing the glasses comfortably for a long time is questionable.
AR headset like magicleap and hololens has a specific us or application, which means it's not just buying and play or a just add simple content, you will need to be a developer to have your custom content in it, but once you do that there is nothing compared to it, I am using the hololens in work currently and slowly building my content, its so much useful that saves 1000s of USD of buying screens and the content is far more immersive and engaging than the normal screen, the whole XR AR VR world is lacking development because most company managers and CEOs in the world are old minded and they don't want to adapt and change even if it will change and transform their businesses to the better, I have been struggling with my management to adopt the hololens AR and the VR headsets almost a year now, the potential there is huge so huge and literally once you can develop your own use for it there will no limit of what you can create.
I remember a few years back when Magic Leap was putting out hype videos and only doing vague interviews making it seem like they were gonna change the world with AR , I was thinking there is no way this thing will be as great as the industry is thinking....it’s barely better than the Holo Lens!
This sounds a whole lot like Manna. That story where the person wears a headset and basically becomes the organic components of an AI running a store Eventually cutting out all management positions, causing mild increases in worker pay, but near maximization of worker efficiency This stuff going to enterprise is gonna fuck up the economy if it takes off. Your kids and their kids will all be directly controlled by an AI telling them where to go and how to do things step by step. Like us, but with less autonomy to goof off
I am here because Unity3D considering magic leap as good AR platform, but as Sam Sheffer says it doesnt make any sense at the moment, there lots of demos software, but the experience not nearly near the VR and the price is to expensive for such short experience
Google Glass flamed out, HoloLens hasn't exactly taken the world by storm, and now Magic Leap is a failure.. looks like this AR nut is tough to crack. We're still a few years away from any Black Mirror scenarios then. Maybe we should be happy.
The product is difficult to sell because it tries to solve a problem that does not yet exist, so seeing the benefit of getting something like this now, is not immediately obvious. And the fact that they expected to sell 1 million was a delusional target. Shame as the initial demos that I saw back in 2015 were so out there, I expected something mind blowing but instead we got a lame attempt at an AR headset.
I find it hard to imagine many real world practical uses for AR for consumers. Games are better suited for VR and most other digital content like movies or website browsing doesn't benefit AR. Outside of those very specific enterprise situations AR doesn't make a lot of sense past the "wow this is neat" factor.
AR seems cool but I really don’t see the purpose, Now VR makes sense. Oculus & HTC have proven it and developed great products. Magic leaps tech seems great though. It may succeed in the end but rn it’s not worth it
Yes, the unseen threads of the world emphasize mass manipulation. What did you expect from the new products launched on the market by the big corporations, a lot of money on special shit? Implementing good ideas requires effort and large companies suffer from the lightness in implementation.
They should market it to the entertainment sector first, IMHO, not manufacturing. I feel like they should have taken less funding and improved the tech for a while longer at a smaller scale.
