As a gearholic, that was a very satisfying walkthrough! As a Greek studio owner whose wife insists in moving to London, it was very informative also! As a 40year old kid who's trying to laugh out of everything, minute 8:21 saying "surprisingly effective for" masked by a huge 330-350Hz resonance, did it for me! Thanks! Wish you to find the time and inspiration to do what's to be done in your space!

You've made a higher end version of Guy Michelmore's garden shed (or back yard shed as we would say here in the US)... a bit bigger as well... but a very nice space to say the least. The fact that it's not a dark space like your old studio probably helps a lot as it more than likely helps bring you into a more creative zone. Nice video... and nice to see that you're doing what you're doing in this video, Paul!!

Thanks Jim! I love Guy's shed! I'm not sure mine's bigger? and yes having more sunlight is a huge bonus for me, I thought about all the glass soundwise and decided light was more important and I'd work a way around the acoustic - it seems to be working fine so far touch wood!!

@@PaulThomsonMusic... when you look at what's stacked around guy, and the proximity to it all in his shed, yours is definitely a bit more spacious than his. Glass is all about angles along with distance. With near or mid field monitoring you'll not have nearly the problems with reflections. Overall, you've made yourself a great shed and a great place to work "from home." So happy for you.

Congrats Paul on re-establishing your older room. I too thought the studio you built was fabulous by design and space. And, I understand the need to re-invent yourself and work space at a time when priorities change. As well as the need for gear you once thought to be necessary. I have found over my 40+ years as an engineer, sound designer and part time composer, that I'v had to re-invent myself more than once. As well as either re-designing a space or moving to a new location. Phoenix, LA and now back home in Cleveland, OH. I am happy to follow you to gain more of your insights to score and sound. My watchword has always been... "The day you quit learning is the day uou die."

Beautiful space! Love the design of the building.
Really interesting about de-midi-ing your synths...I've found that freeing as well! Amazing to hear someone of your caliber confirming my experience. In my case I think committing to a take rather than waffling back and forth tweaking the midi notes hearkens back to recording sessions in the 80's and 90's (I might have a few years on you), and the loss of some of that organic feel when everything is clipped to the grid. Anyhow, Grats!!

Good luck Paul. As an upgrade from a spare bedroom studio, I've just built a similar garden room (less windows), GIK acoustic treatment, decent quality monitors, the aircon is a godsend. The simplicity of sitting at a desk, most things in the box with good quality output makes the workflow fun and absorbing. I can write so much faster and there is less fiddling afterwards. But because of the quality I can composed hear it well at much lower volumes so can go for longer.

    • @PaulThomsonMusic

You can hear the ringing especially around 9:27 thru 10:24 it’s comes right after you speak. You need more room treatment and then reset the room correction eq. It’s mostly when you are in front of the desk. I don’t really hear it near the back wall under the AC area.

Hi Paul, great update. Thanks for doing these types of videos. One thing i have noticed - there is a very resonant frequency in your room when you are speaking. In my experience with acoustic treatment, i do feel the space is lacking some initial reflection treatment, especially on the ceiling. I feel you would really benefit from adding some 242's or 244 GIKs to the room to remove it and tighten it up further. Anyway, great studio, enjoy!

Nice looking room. Sure hope you were able to sell your other studio to someone who could use it as a studio. I remember there was a LOT of work and planning that went into it. Your new room does sound a bit live, though, listening to your voice. Might it need more absorption? Especially with all of those reflecting glass surfaces?
If it were me, in addition to the nice, bright lighting you have, I'd put maybe a half dozen reasonably powerful PAR LED lights in the corner and along the wall (and hook them up to a DMX controller so you can program different scenes). It's a small thing, but having the ability to turn the light in the room to some other rich color(s) besides white really can transform your mood, and take you to a different place. I find it can be hard to get your mind into a dark, mysterious zone for creating dark and mysterious music when the lighting is so bright and office-like. ;)

Great idea thanks Lee. Room wise - I was just being lazy and used the camera audio for the bit where I was sitting down.. ! .. But it has a good balance of live/damped for me at the moment, everything seems to translate well and also headphones sound the same - maybe the Trinnov is doing some magic.

I know I'm probably missing a lot (of low end?) so what else would you maybe suggest bearing in mind I have neighbours? Thanks.

Great update Paul and great to see you. Didn’t see a 5.1 monitoring in there (can’t remember if you had it in the old studio either?) did you determine 5.1 was not needed? Makes sense if it’s purely a writing and recording studio vs mix but I know a lot of writers are moving up to at least out some type of 5.1 in there studios to have the option. Cheers mate

Thanks Kevin! No I've been stereo only for the last few years, I have a workflow where I can take stems to a surround room to 'mix out' if I need to but I haven't needed to for a while now. Theres still some resistance to composers using the surrounds and sub in their music from dubbing engineers!!

I love this video, not least for its honesty, charm and generosity of information. It’s inspiring, thank you! Now, I'll be honest...
I never really dug the vibe of the Bullpen, Daddio. It thought it was overkill, with regards to some of the equipment. I didn’t understand the 2" or the drum kit, or even the grand (😱). It should have been a writing suite, not a hybrid recording studio. But is was a magnificent achievement. Still having problems with the guitars, here, haha, but it's kind of adorable that you are a total guitar nut, and have them there.Very cute :)) Me, I just do my Jan Hammer impression with samples and it fools 'em every time.
The acoustics. Even though it presently sounds like a large, empty bathroom, surely the detractors must understand that it’s obviously a work in progress. Duh….?
Loving those fantastic links, thank you. I'm intending to return to the UK, from Canada, and will definitely be looking seriously at Green Retreats and AKA. I'm using a Zaor Miza M right now, which is great but not...bespoke. Not sure about that orange slab Choi Sauce thing, though ;) But if you rate it, that’s good enough for me, Sir.
One final thing. I just don't how anyone can work with only one screen. Three is the absolute minimum for me. Just my take.
Many, many thanks to you, Paul, for your infectious enthusiasm, expertise, winning humour, great music and wonderful walkthroughs. Long may you prosper.

Thanks Michael!! Do you know what.. it was a big room, I was trying to lay it out like I thought a studio should look as I've only ever had smaller rooms! it was a bit of overkill. The piano I do miss! the drums were fun to learn and practice, and I made some samples (of course!) - which are in my album sample pack.. and yeah I've started adding some more room treatment to the ceiling, putting up nice big curtain across the back next! although it sounds great at the mix position thanks to the Trinnov..

Thank you so much for not taking my crits personally, Paul. I knew you wouldn't. Just my personal opinion on certain things; we're all different. Listen, I'd give a lot (literally) to own a grand.
Back in the UK, around 2001, I bought a house and got a blocks-and-mortar studio built in the top level of my rear garden. The foundations of it were already there. The next door neighbour built onto it and he even constructed a horseshoe-shape workstation. It was great and I loved it. So, what you wrote I understood exactly, but without the grand piano and drum kit. And my space was a bit smaller than yours, hehe. No bulls there.
As the equipment grew, it was my dream to get away from the house and have a purpose-built retreat. After five years I moved and did it all again, but this time the next place had a huge space, behind one of the two garages, so it all went in there. I wasn't there long, though....
Then I came to Canada in 2008 (bad idea), and 90% of my studio is in now boxes in lockers. Actually, it's rather heartbreaking, as much of it is obsolete. Now I want to return and bring it all back! Don't even ask. I've learnt what suffering for my art means.
I wish you well, and I'm loving your new space and your wonderful attitude, talent and expertise. I'll definitely be looking at Green Retreats and AKA on my return.@@PaulThomsonMusic

You have some serious room reflections just above your sweet spot listen at 8:12-8:17. Maybe because you are close to the ceiling where it is mostly bare. I can clearly hear it: not sure if because all the glass behind you or just up in the ceiling area. Also at 8:24 it’s not quite a ring, I am thinking it’s around 400hz with a tight Q.

If you get some long, thick curtains that you can slide over to cover the window panes, you'd probably get even better acoustics. I imagine huge areas of glass panes aren't great if you want to avoid acoustic reflections from behind you.

Thanks Paul - very enlightening. I followed your last (fabulous) studio build which inspired the design of much of my own barn-conversion studio build, even down to that gorgeous desk you had - so it's equally interesting to see your evolution into this streamlined version. ONE QUESTION: You're still using the M905 for monitoring (which I had been planning to purchase soon) - now you have the Trinnov - would you recommend from your experience not bothering with a Grace and using a Trinnov for monitoring as well?
PS. Keep up the great videos!

Thanks Angus! On the m905 - I still use that - if I'm checking on headphones they plug into that, and the Trinnov just sits between the m905 physical out and the speakers. There's probably a few ways of doing it but I'm familiar with the Grace and like the sound of it!
