Paul Thomson: It was so refreshing and reassuring to hear you promote "busking [and] feeling your way around the keyboard," and "stumbling through" the composing process in search of the right sound. There are so many online promoters hyping every elixir from enrolling in their classes or buying their books that contain the secrets to improve (or "level up") one's ear training, improve one's technical knowledge, improve one's performance skills, etc., etc. Those are positive elements that obviously can provide a solid appreciation of some aspects of music but they don't necessarily translate into composing memorable music. We've all listened to interviews with successful composers whose musical education was little to none (not that one should intentionally avoid music lessons and classes). The key, it seems, is to love music, know what sounds good, and then create a flow and arrangement of those chords and notes that have never been played before.

Incredibly useful Paul, great content. I often find myself shackled by over thinking it rather than letting the juice loose and allowing it to progress more organically. This advice is inspiring, encouraging experimentation and hopefully leading to those surprise moments that make a composition stand out.
Very interesting and entertaining. I need to experiment more with the chords and their progressions and that will lead to a whole new outlook on my work.

I found it interesting to hear how film composers work with sound - being guided by ears more than theory. I think this is a valuable lesson - to hear the harmonic movement first - especially the bass movement and its relationship to the melody. A question - theory says avoid parallel (5ths and Octaves) because those match existing overtones and so mask / remove voice independence. Do you go through the actual score and "clean up" (especially) inner parts to avoid theory "clangers"?

And concomitantly the surprises, the unexpected, this fragile balance between comfortable and un-comfortable for the listener.
Passing notes is also a subject by itself as also how to use clashes and "wrong notes".

You are very kind! I don’t think I do know… but I’m the grand tradition - I spent my youth singing Howells - Gloucester, Coll Reg, St Paul’s - and only realised how jazzy they were when my good friend Rob Stringer pointed it out to me in my late 40s!! 😂

Its all about patterns. Every minor chord has the same structure as do the majors. Give it time!
