@JerryRigEverything Thank you so much for answering this question! You have no idea how happy this makes me. In your last teardown video of the S22 Ultra, I commented on this very concern. I have the S21 5G, and like a dummy I stabbed the wrong hole when trying to eject the sim card tray, and immediately thought I damaged my new phone before I even turned it on. Once I had everything set up I did multiple sound tests with the microphone, talking loudly and talking as softly as I can, and didn't hear any distortion that would give evidence that I had damaged the actual microphone. Your video gives me such a huge amount of peace of mind, and I sincerely thank you for making this video!
This "safe" design may not be deliberate but just a side effect of the components and their mounting method. They probably want to place the SMD package microphone on one of the PCBs they already have for the USB port. That would mean it's mounted parallel to the screen and always off-axis from the hole to divert the sound in. But hey, if it works to prevent accidental damage too, why not!
I remember in older phones, The microphone is a cylindrical thing that sits right upto that hole And 2 wires come out of it and are soldered to the board.

I repeat again: The balls are there mostly to reduce resonance. It is kinda also true about sounding a bit bigger but that is just a bonus. Dampening resonance is the main purpose. That is why it is litterly called "dampening" in a speaker box🤪

@Faça a Diferença - com André Gonçalves Hey I believe it has the same safety features. I can't imagine them taking such precautionary measures and placing it only into 1 of the 2 identical looking holes on the device.

You do such a great job speaking practically about structural integrity being important. Patiently waiting for you to drop some knowledge on us!
I have actually made this mistake in the past. I owned a Huawei smartphone and I was in a rush and accidentally stabbed the microphone hole instead of the SIM card eject hole. Surprisingly it didn’t completely destroy the microphone. Thankfully that won’t happen anymore as I own an iPhone
I'm very surprised at Apples design here. I would have thought they'd make it really easy to accidentally damage the mic, it's another source of "sorry we can't repair this, you'll have to buy a whole new device"
Part of me was hoping that one of the microphones would straight up break, because this is what many people think of as THE premiere phone destruction channel, but realistically, I'm glad that none of them did. People are people and people aren't perfect, so it's good that manufacturers foolproof their phones from being destroyed unintentionally while trying to do something that is otherwise intended.
I was sure i broke the top microphone on my cheap Motorola by falsely poking it HARD. Guess this is the reason it survived. Very nice video format, please make more like these
I just did that to my S24 Ultra by mistake. I was even using some considerable strength and thinking the tray was stuck, when I noticed it was a different hole. I imagine it works the same as the S22? The mic seems to be working still. EDIT: Just saw your S24 Ultra teardown. I'm glad it's safe too. Thank you!

Thanks. I am one of these people. Right after unboxing, I did the same, to make things worse I pressed and nudged it a little. Actually I was misled by the design of the sim tray of my old phone (a poco m2) from which I removed the sim. I hope vivo has the same design as these phone shown in this video. I've accidentally poked the wrong hole and luckily didn't force it on my Samsung. I don't understand why the SIM and speaker holes are so close together! This video made me feel better. Thank you.
Smartphone speakers are placed in locations that make them harder to cover up by accident when holding the device. On many different phones the speaker is on the bottom of the phone right along with the main microphone with the second one on the top or rear next to the camera. The hole that is often near the sim card tray is a microphone hole not a speaker.
@@josephbennett3482 I have a Samsung Note 20 Ultra, an A715G and previous S20FE. There are two holes on top. When the SIM card tray is flushed it's difficult to discern in dim lighting at times. Yes. I did same Thing. What u discovered?
Either my brain is too dirty 😭😂 or Zack has even more exceptional talents and is a brilliant writer 😂
Yesterday I bought a one plus 11 and omg, I stuck the sim card tray in the microphone and was worried it might damage the microphone but good to know it's intact thanks to these protections, greetings Zach
What a relief! Now I can sleep better. I thought I had damaged my new HONOR Magic 6 Lite. Thanks a million for this informative video!
Every smartphone makers fear JRE's bend test .
That's why they put SIM tray in downside of phone body.😂😂😂😂
1:52 lobster mode activated.
I repeat again:
The balls are there mostly to reduce resonance.
It is kinda also true about sounding a bit bigger but that is just a bonus. Dampening resonance is the main purpose.
That is why it is litterly called "dampening" in a speaker box🤪
Ohh! Ok!
I just received my s23 and did this mistake, my god your video really relief me😊
Me paso lo mismo con mi S23 lo habre dañado ?
Had done it once accidentally , was sceptical till date that i might have punctured it on my phone.. but thanks to you i feel more confident about it being safe now

Thank you for the video! I upgraded to the s22 from my s9. The s9 had the sim slot up top and I just inserted the tool up there out of habit without thinking. Is it safe to assume the s22 will have the same safety measures in place for the top hole similar to the bottom mic like you demonstrated with the s22 ultra? Thanks for your time.
YES! Everyone thinks I'm crazy because I did this!
@@n646n Really appreciate your videos.
@@n646n thanks for the answer!
@Faça a Diferença - com André Gonçalves Hey I believe it has the same safety features. I can't imagine them taking such precautionary measures and placing it only into 1 of the 2 identical looking holes on the device.
Almost everyone did that mistake...i decided on the first day itself that i would never do that mistake and on 2nd day i put that into microphone🤣
I just made the same stupid mistake with my new S21 FE, I used SIM removal tool in the wrong hole. Lame!
Anyway, I subscribed to your channel. Thank you, great vid! 😁👍
Accidentally poked my new A51 on the mic hole during my SIM card insertion, good thing it still works and has no damage 😂
TL;DR: Putting it in the wrong hole ain’t a deal
I mean, the SIM ejector tool is made of metal and is pretty stiff. I would assume it would damage any phone with a small gap, tbh.
This guy exudes such a positive energy that he tends to lift everyone's spirit ❤️
That´s exactly what I was looking for because I put the SIM card removal tool into the microphone hole of my brandnew S22 ultra. Thank you so much. You safed my day.
Did it affect the water resistant ability?
Hey Jerry, can you please do a teardown on the new ipad air 5? There are tons of reports on the chassis being really thin and being able to hear the batteries shake around inside the iPad.
Since you own an iphone, do you have someone trim your wool?
I'm very surprised at Apples design here. I would have thought they'd make it really easy to accidentally damage the mic, it's another source of "sorry we can't repair this, you'll have to buy a whole new device"
Part of me was hoping that one of the microphones would straight up break, because this is what many people think of as THE premiere phone destruction channel, but realistically, I'm glad that none of them did. People are people and people aren't perfect, so it's good that manufacturers foolproof their phones from being destroyed unintentionally while trying to do something that is otherwise intended.
Shaft.....drain balls.....wrong hole........gave me a good chuckle, right when I needed it 🤣😂👍
4:25 Apple doesnot change anything but the name and price
LOL 😆 🤣 😂
I was sure i broke the top microphone on my cheap Motorola by falsely poking it HARD. Guess this is the reason it survived. Very nice video format, please make more like these
Me the entire video “THATS WHAT SHE SAID!!!”😂😭
3:38 - "...because there's considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists" - pure GOLD.
Thank you!
Can't wait for garden update video Zack.
Thanks
Thank God (New Samsung A53) i've been making mic tests for the last two days testing every aspect of the audio. Thinking that i missed up my new phone. Such a relief thanks a lot.
Thank Zach I accidentally poked the mic hole when trying to eject Sim for my note 10 plus. This video is great. I feel better now
🤣🤣🤣 I almost spit my coffee, when Jerry said the joke, about the iphone.
THANKS FOR DOING THIS VIDEO !
I JUST CALMED DOWN AFTER POKING MY SAMSUNG'S S22 ULTRA MICROPHONE HOLE.
GREAT VIDEO, THANKS AGAIN !
the amount of different and precise tech that goes into creating a smartphone is ridicules. weird how people just take it for granted.
So great to hear that my new S22 wasn't damaged. Great video, kudos
Hi Jerry! Can you do thr exact video but for Samsung S24?
Yesterday i was in a rush and put my SIM Ejector Tool inside bottom hole for microhpone and push it hard. Now it seems my bottom microphone record a strange noise...
Thank you! Waiting for the video!
Oooh that's a relief!!!, i have done this to my s22 Ultra and was frustrated about it. I love u man!!!
Did it affect the water resistant ability?
Knowing about vibrators and finding the right holes. The video we all waited for.
The commentary is on point. My man.
Oh my gosh you’ve heard the Yosemite ranger quote too!!! I love that!!
I think the fancy vibrator can do some neat tricks. Like the feeling of a bouncing ball or fireworks I don't notice the vibration while receiving a phone call or text message. Only while typing
Even though I assume it's the same, would love to have seen s22 ultra top mic, that's where I stupidly tried to eject sim card on my new phone
4:19 "And this applies from the iPhone 10 all the way to the iPhone 15 since Apple doesn't change anything but the name and price." Yes! Love it!
Words like "Vibrator" "Wrong Hole" "Balls" hurts my soul!!
Thanks. I am one of these people. Right after unboxing, I did the same, to make things worse I pressed and nudged it a little. Actually I was misled by the design of the sim tray of my old phone (a poco m2) from which I removed the sim. I hope vivo has the same design as these phone shown in this video. Phone's mic is working fine, but I don't know about waterproofing.
the miniaturisation and construction is amazing
THX for this video. I had my troubles with the S22 Ultra Sim-card hole.. 🙈 You provide peace of mind ✌️
Thank you very much and big hug from Romania, S22 Ultra here , also mistake the hole and inserted into mic , you save my brain 😅
Did it affect the water resistant ability?
@@vaibhavpadhiyar2648 I recommend minimum GoPro 10 for the movie underwater. Phones are good only in river clean water, not pool with chlorine or sea with salted water !
Glad to see this. I did exactly this when i unboxed my s22 ultra.
Well these videos got filled with a lot more innuendo since I last watched one.
Any update on your hummer? I'm really enjoying your new hummer project. I'm still waiting 😆👍
Wow the engineering that goes into these phones is just getting more amazing
I've been waiting for this and you've no fricking idea! YIIIIIIHAA!!! 😀Thank you ❤️❤️
I've accidentally poked the wrong hole and luckily didn't force it on my Samsung.
On the S22 Ultra the SIM tray is at the bottom making it less likely to be mistaken. My Hauwei phone the SIM is on the side as is the iPhone 13 Pro Max and no additional holes.
I assume Samsung S20 is the same with the upper noise cancellation hole as well!!! Thanks for the amazing explanation! Keep up the good work!!
I'm glad, Zack, did this video. I was a bit concerned about the microphone next to the sim trayon my 22ultra. Thx 👍🖖
Is the Mac Studio tear down coming? 👀 I know it would be 100% fun!
Thanks!
