because boybands of 90's were overflowing "the market" and there was much more commercial aspect to them than the talent and the art of music. On the other hand, One Direction stands out because they had all three aspects perfectly executed there but general public only notices the commercial part of them, sadly. The more they're silent, though, the more commercial part is forgotten and it allows their performances and the music itself speak for them.
Love this performance. Peter Gabriel performed it so well on the original. The bar is set really high. Harry Styles has really given this song it's due. I'm impressed. The whole band is amazing.
Ok, I'll admit I am a fan of Harry. But not because of his boy band days, but because of his pure talent. He reminds me of David Bowie in the '70's. He's his own, unique person, expressing himself with a great feel for music, whether it's singing a song he wrote or songs from other artists.
What a fun funky song to cover. They did a great job too. Harry is one of the younger gen's who has grown emotionally and musically . He sees what he does now as art and not just a game to make money off of. Great job again Fil ! Harry just won my vote!!! Digging it man , if he is surrounding himself with the calibre of Peter Gabriel, and kicking ass with versions like this ....
Bringing me back to the 80’s “I want my MTV”! Just dated myself. You and Harry had my head swaying along with the groovy performance and your groovy analysis. I said it in Patreon and I’ll say it again, takes a confident man to wear pearls or a boa like he did in his amazing Grammy performance. Love it all, great analysis Fil!
This is Harry's band they travel with him Sarah on Drums Nyah and Charlotte on keys and synth Mitch on Guitar and Adam on base 1st time they did this Live
What a great Friday night video! I loved this. We' had One Direction blaring in our house for a few years because of my daughter. I came close to seeing them in concert myself. I remember this Howard Stern Show and I was so impressed with Harry. i love that he has an almost all girl band. He will be around for a long while!
I love your enthusiasm and appreciation for the syncopation and 'movement' in this oh-so-groovy tune (seems true for much of Peter Gabriel's work). You covered so many important aspects of both the composition and the performance/performers to really help us appreciate both even more (if that's even possible!). SO GOOD!
I absolutely love Peter Gabriel but that said, I was really impressed with Harry’s version. He sounded a lot like the original without trying to copy Peter. It’s such an iconic song so good on him.
Harry was only 16 when he entered the X factor, it’s quite incredible to see his journey since then In my opinion Sign of the times is a masterpiece. I remember tape players as I was born in 1984, when they got chewed up it was a nightmare
I'm not as familiar with Harry Stiles (a little after my time with the "Boy Band" phenomenon), but VERY familiar with Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer". Harry seems to also be channeling Peter's oddness in the way he's dressed. Incredible that they played that live and it stands up perfectly next to the original recorded version. So very rare, IMO. And he didn't even make any attempt to put his own signature on it. I really liked it. I turned 50 last Monday and I've ordered a Banjo as a present to myself. For years I've been tempted to learn to play, and this is the year I'll make that happen.
Fil, I respect your musical knowledge so much! I wish I knew you as a teenager because I would have learned so much about music from you. Never mind, I am learning now! Thanks for shining your light on Harry Styles and his band. So many people disrespect him for no other reason than he started on X Factor. He has worked very hard over the 10 years he has been famous to be this good. Your kudos gives him clout! He is brilliant and magnetic live,
I just love his taste in music. Listening to his album, I just know how much passion he put into it. I appreciate that he mostly uses real instruments in his music. I found him when he was in 1d, thinking that it would be cool if he could go solo and do some great rock songs. He just has that kind of raspy voice and tone that I love.
I like Harry. A lot. And even for those that don't like him for whatever reason, you have to appreciate his taste in music. And it brings this amazing song to people who may not even realize it is a cover. (I'm looking at you my wayward niece who thinks music was invented in 2002). I want to believe he is bringing new fans to Peter Gabriel's amazing catalog of music.
@@bradsmack1 The thing I find with Harry he just doesn’t seem to care about what others think about what he does or wears. That along with his obvious talent it’s what makes him different from most other artists around now. Harry just loves music and it shows with what covers he chooses and also his own music. Harry isn’t doing music that will put him straight into the charts but music he enjoys making and listening to.
@@wombats5128 I agree.....I'm afraid I was guilty of attempting to make a low-class inference, a lame piece of "comedy" worthy of neither of us! As for Harry, I also think he's a breath of fresh '21 air, and nothing at all like a dance-only auto-tuner, like many a boy band graduate! He not only seems like he appreciates music that was produced BEFORE 2007, but I fancy him to be a bit of a musicologist, a veritable student of rock'n'pop throughout the decades! I mean, he's covering Peter Gabriel, for crying out loud! If I told him to think about maybe tackling, say, "Carpet Crawlers" or "Get 'em Out by Friday," I don't think he'd look at me funny! Plus, his comfort level with himself is refreshing, as well, and as a fellow male, I'm not put off, at all, by his creative dress......or his creative dress (I saw that mag spread)! I would do well to dig a bit deeper into his current output; the couple songs I've seen the videos for at my gym are so refreshingly melodic and memorable! Maybe I'll start my trip down his rabbit hole, now....musically speaking, of course!😉🎶
I thought he did a wonderful version. This was on Howard's Stern show and the first time they performed this live. So many things to take into consideration about how Harry really did justice to this song. I am excited to see what he does next, real true artists are rare. He also writes much of his music, I just recently got into his solo music. My daughters were into his boy band days and I have went back and listened to some of their songs and his voice has just kept improving. I love Harry's band and the way they play a variety of music styles. Thank you for such a great video as always love seeing your breakdowns.
MTV video playing in my head....he really channeled Peter G. in this, well, well done . Kudos to the band for their perfectly timed parts too. There was a time when girls were not considered equal in bands, just pretty tambourine shakers......these hold their own....Thanks Fil.
Great video, Fil. Don't feel too old. As a kid, I had a wire rack that held 45s. In there were I Want to Hold Your Hand and Bus Stop, and many more. Cheers.
Core blimey !!! Sarah Jones does a fantastic job. She’s the one elevating this excellent cover. She reminds me so much of Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr in her approach to drumming. Concrete steady , keeping it brilliantly basic and not jeopardising the beat & tempo with anything unnecessary show offs. Only 1 real fill at the end of the song. To me , that’s the true mark of a master craftsman. I bow in admiration.
I’m a huge 1D stan and it always made me really uncomfortable that people would discredit any of the boys. It’s quite misogynistic when you get to the root of why people automatically dislike young male bands with large female audiences. All of the lads from 1D are insanely talented but are highly discredited because of people’s opinions of boy bands. When people do a little research and decide not allow their implicit biases to control their opinions suddenly they find out that all of them have an incredible impact on the music industry. Also Harry is proud of what 1D gave him, he always says in interviews how upsetting it is for people not take his career seriously, to want him to dislike his own band he worked so hard in and his past. His talent was there from the start it’s other people’s mistakes when they cannot realize this.
oh my God, this kind of comment is what actually I was looking for. you said it perfectly. like you, it also breaks my heart a little whenever I see people just don’t want to give 1D a chance just because they’re a “boyband”. people just don’t take them seriously because they have massive female fanbase. now that they all have their solo career, then people start noticing and realize that they’re all talented musicians.
actually I gave a try to them all and it's a complete lie that they all "have an incredible impact on the music industry", some of them are mediocre at best. Whatever floats your boat I guess.
@@hermionedannunzio9422 Negative opinions are unecessary. It boils down to your personal taste in music who you feel has better talent. Also you must know the advantages that were given to some and taken from others. For example Harry was given every opportunity whilst Liam and Louis wrote the majority of the lyrics that Harry became most famous for singing. Niall taught Harry to play guitar. Zayn has a remarkable voice but because of his Pakistani Muslim background he was less sellable to the majority islamafobic public . They instead went with Harry because he was more easily sellable. You also need to understand how the music industry works. Just because a person has the biggest financial backing doesn’t mean that they did all the work themselves. The person who is behind the scenes putting together the lyrics and melodies for the show deserves their share of consideration. The X Factor is designed for 1 person to be the stand out star so they put everything behind the easily sellable person. They will sabotage the others in the group to get the outcome that they planned on all along. Most people don’t want to pay enough attention to what is really happening.!They just want to see something shiny.
@@hannahnur6784 Jesus Christ , here we go again ppl discrediting harry again and taking it away from him . He has a whole voice , he's fucking talented and that's why he was chosen . Why can't you just respect him and the voice and talent he has ? You just ignore him and call him privileged coz he had a great voice since the beginning , have you not see him struggle with his confidence and health over the years ? Just bcoz he doesn't go out talking about his emotions and problems you can't just say that he is privileged . You can praise Louis for his writing , he got most of the songs but you can't appreciate Harry's vocals and voice and have a problem with his singing ?! I can also go around saying " they didn't choose any other boys songs ?! Partial omg " no , I don't . But you guys really have hard time appreciating harry and his talent and what he has done alone !
Peter Gabriel’s original “Sledgehammer” was defined as much, if not more, by the MTV video with the song as it was by the music. The same goes for the Talking Heads “Burning Down the House” and The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah.” The release of those videos roughly marked the beginning and the end of my grad school career and the heyday of MTV. It’s nice to revisit the music as music and not just a component of a video.
Yes I remember cassette tapes.I.still have so many as I was in a record club.I gave a bag full to the thrift store and now they have made a come back.Love how you explain these videos to me!

Now you have to react to his other live performances too please ? Girl crush , kiwi at the late late show , kiwi × 3 in a concert , sign of the times at the Graham Norton show , medicine ( unreleased song) at st. Paul and a few more 😂❤️ Thank for your reaction
showing how little I know about music (I was an 80's teen) in Peter Gabriel's original I was impressed (though I shouldn't have been surprised) at how good the woman doing background vocals was amazing. I didn't realize till only recently when watch a live performance that she was the incredible Paula Cole. "and there we have it."
Paul McCartney was in a boy band too! 😁 LOVE this version of Sledgehammer--Harry pays proper homage to Peter Gabriel for sure!!!! Love your channel, Fil!
Fil ! ... I wasn't "tapping my foot". But my head did nod, while "playing drums" on my desk ! ... If I wasn't otherwise, dancing around my room. Harry, with the Band; succeeded in staying so deep in the Groove. You could say, " He was in the Pocket". It was Freakin' Brilliant ! ;-)
I'm can almost guarantee it's the blonde girl on the left who is doing tambourine, she's excellent and as a musician does all the extra sound work. I'm convinced she could stand in for any other band member, even singing lol 😆
LOVE the number of female musicians in his band. I would never wear pearls with a peter pan collar, but damn, he can pull it off. As always, thanks for the history of the band. All the members leaving to go solo makes WAY more sense now. I know of One Direction, because they were on James Corden ALL THE TIME, and they always seemed to be lovely boys.
In all fairness, remarkably good. Very fine drummer and HS himself sings well. It’s still a cover, but if you’re going to cover anything by anyone from the Genesis stable, you’ve got to be pretty damn’ sure of yourself. Credit where credit’s due.
Hi Fil. The new Bobby Dylan biopic trailer just released. Apparently he spent 4 years learning to sing and play like Bob. Director says it’s him singing. Can you please analyze. Thanks.
Great reveiw, as always! Agree on H song ability in this one of the best songs back in the day. Peter G is da shit! Love the drum sound and base. H and his band is really really good, tight and spot on! Take care be safe 💛 ps Walls with Louis Tomlinson is a goood song ds
I saw Peter with David Bowie and the Tubes in Vancouver in 1983...Bowie played so long the camera guy turn the camera to the clock got down and went home ♡
I agree.Peter Gabriel gives this song a much grittier, sexy quality to this very erotic song I dont get that from Harry at all. Thanks again Fil for showing us such diversity. You're enthusiasm and knowledge is so appreciated as always Dont cut you're hair too much ...More men should have long hair😎😉 You look fabulous!
I LOVE the original, but I also LOVE this version. I wish he would release it so I didn't have to always watch on youtube. 😄 I was never a fan of his boyband days because I was too old, but as an adult I really like his solo work. Just like someone else said, like George Michael. Im glad Harry got to break away.
I Love the sound of the Shakuhachi bamboo flute ! To bad Peter Gabriel used a synthesizer in the intro, instead of the real thing. Do you know what I mean ? It was a synthesized time in music though, so I get it. But a real one still would have been cooler ! Harry Styles was really good and enjoyed the analyses. Thanks Fil !!
Please, react to Harry Styles - Girl Crush (live at BBC). It's a lovely cover and I think that theoretically it might be interesting from technical perspective (harmony-wise at least).
Harry Styles is this generations' Bryan Ferry, but a far superior singer to the former. Bryan, to his credit, knew how to make up for his shortcomings by surrounding himself with fantastic players, same as this young gent. He's got the moves, charisma and confidence of some of the great frontmen of rock and roll's past.
This is a great cover! Harry made it his own. The entire song is one big innuendo… unbeknownst to 12 year old me! I love Peter Gabriel’s videos, especially Sledgehammer, Big Time, Steam, amongst others.

What a classic!! It's always great to see a group of very talented people enjoying themselves.
Thanks, Fil! 🖤🤘🏽
He is the best artist I have heard in a decade. I appreciate his musicianship. He will.be around for quite awhile. Just my opinion.
I wasn't a 1D fan, but as solo artists I love all their voices especially Harrys and Nialls. They really are wonderful talents👌. Your voice too Fil👏.
Enjoyed this cover of Sledgehammer! Good to see a non-autotuned singer and a tight band!
Choosing Sledgehammer alone already shows he got good taste in music. Talented but without good taste is a handicap
Harry is a huge fan of the ‘70s and ‘80s music
Harry was only 16 when he entered the X factor, it’s quite incredible to see his journey since then
In my opinion Sign of the times is a masterpiece.
I remember tape players as I was born in 1984, when they got chewed up it was a nightmare
Ha-ha, have you ever tried to fix a teared tape? Like with duck tape? :D
I agree with you about Sign of the Times. That deserved a Grammy.
@@AnnaLujza82 Yes a few times 😂
@@cleopuma4322 Definitely did deserve one, one of the best modern songs of the last few years
@@evehosgood 😁
Wow! I don't know which one I enjoyed more Harry's cool performance or your cool analysis! Outstanding Fil 👏❤🔥😎
Heard this a week ago on You Tube absolutely amazing live performance by Harry and his crew a match for Peters original !
Thanks for your reaction. I really love his version of ‘Girl Crush’ live at the BBC. Maybe nice to check out or react to?
TJ Happy Birthday! Good luck with your banjo lessons!!
He is brilliant and magnetic live,
This performance doesn't quit! And your analysis and demonstration couldn't have been better, Fil, loved it.
Thanks for doing these!
Harry nailed this fun version of Sledgehammer, I love his little smirk at the end!
What a tight band! That was so enjoyable!
Gotta love a man in pearls.
I'm trying to decipher the subtle message he may be sending with the visual: Harry Styles.........pearl necklace.
Not really
@@AS-yz2iz Your well-thought-out, well-researched response is hard to argue with.
Love this version
Love the way Fil smiles at the big parts of the performance 😎
Again 💯great song, performance & analysis 💗
Great analysis! I'm with you on Harry. No lip synching or auto tune, he's got too much integrity.☮❤
love how you dissect the tiny nuances. Love the high hat shift for instance.
Amazing performance; his drummer is unreal!!
MTV video playing in my head....he really channeled Peter G. in this, well, well done . Kudos to the band for their perfectly timed parts too. There was a time when girls were not considered equal in bands, just pretty tambourine shakers......these hold their own....Thanks Fil.
I just love your explanations and please do more Harry reactions
Your smile always makes my day! 😁❤👍
I remember Peter Gabriel performing this song but this version is new to me. Thanks for the education!!
@@hermionedannunzio9422 I'm curious to know which ones you think are mediocre?
Harry is definitely doing his own vibe lol. I grew up with this on cassette lol.
Thanx for doing this! I love this collab and really love Harry!
Excellent performance and analysis. Enjoyed this.
This was a Groovy Analysis! nothing get by You Fil. love all the little details you point out. I've not seen this footage of Harry before Cool !
His cover was excellent! Loved watching you get into it too! Good time!
That's a lot of information, Fil. An enjoyable excursion through the best of histories;. ROCK 'N' ROLL history!!!
I enjoy listening to you! I think they did a great job. Would love to hear you sing it, also 😊 Hope you have a great weekend, Fil 💙
Great cover of Sledgehammer. Styles do it good. Thanks for sharing it Phil.
Hi Fil , how's it going ? I think this performance is a mix of great talented people . Just loved the drummer! I am always impressed by the amount of information you deliver us , just love when you demonstrate the guitar part. One day I would like to see you play and sing the whole song after the analysis 😁 Congrats 👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
We’re learning this. The sub and up octave on the bass is the bomb
An amazing version.....Love it. They are just amazing live.....
This is such a awesome video to night, wow, thanks Fil. It's cooking on the burner.... oh ya😉😉
Now you have to react to his other live performances too please ? Girl crush , kiwi at the late late show , kiwi × 3 in a concert , sign of the times at the Graham Norton show , medicine ( unreleased song) at st. Paul and a few more 😂❤️
Thank for your reaction
showing how little I know about music (I was an 80's teen) in Peter Gabriel's original I was impressed (though I shouldn't have been surprised) at how good the woman doing background vocals was amazing.
Loved the inside musician info. Made me love this performance even more.
Loved this video!! Learnt something new as well ❤️
Fil ! ... I wasn't "tapping my foot". But my head did nod, while "playing drums" on my desk ! ... If I wasn't otherwise, dancing around my room. Harry, with the Band; succeeded in staying so deep in the Groove. You could say, " He was in the Pocket". It was Freakin' Brilliant ! ;-)
jknow its only in my head, but he even sounds like Gabriel. sounds incredible. the band as well.
I'm can almost guarantee it's the blonde girl on the left who is doing tambourine, she's excellent and as a musician does all the extra sound work. I'm convinced she could stand in for any other band member, even singing lol 😆
It continues throughout while she's playing keys so she would have to be using her feet which is possible.
Cassette? I migrated my vinyl to cassette just so I could listen in the car! Great version. Drummer is fantastic.
Her name is Sarah Jones
In all fairness, remarkably good. Very fine drummer and HS himself sings well.
It’s still a cover, but if you’re going to cover anything by anyone from the Genesis stable, you’ve got to be pretty damn’ sure of yourself. Credit where credit’s due.
Yes, Harry is a confident - without being arrogant. And that's one of the reason he got there where he is now
Car trips must have never been boring for your family!
Hi Fil. The new Bobby Dylan biopic trailer just released. Apparently he spent 4 years learning to sing and play like Bob. Director says it’s him singing. Can you please analyze. Thanks.
Thanks for the donation!
Great reveiw, as always! Agree on H song ability in this one of the best songs back in the day. Peter G is da shit! Love the drum sound and base.
H and his band is really really good, tight and spot on!
Take care be safe 💛
ps Walls with Louis Tomlinson is a goood song ds
I saw Peter with David Bowie and the Tubes in Vancouver in 1983...Bowie played so long the camera guy turn the camera to the clock got down and went home ♡
Just love that song!
You should react to Harry Styles - sign of the times live on Graham Norton!!
Vocally it's pretty good (8/10) but Gabriel's voice has so many harmonics it's almost impossible to replicate to that richness.
I agree.Peter Gabriel gives this song a much grittier, sexy quality to this very erotic song
I dont get that from Harry at all.
Thanks again Fil for showing us such diversity. You're enthusiasm and knowledge is so appreciated as always
Dont cut you're hair too much ...More men should have long hair😎😉 You look fabulous!
I don’t think that Harry is trying to replicate anyone. He is always showing us his own colors. And those colors are unique and wonderful.
Covers aren't usually meant to exactly replicate the original artists sound.
Wow!! I like so much your analisys 🎼🎶🎵♩🎤🎙👏👏👏👏👍👍 no more words 👌👌💯✔🤘👊
My family laugh at me because I love Harry Styles music. You have validated me!
Charlotte has a tamborine sound on the key boards and Nyah has Horns on her Synth
It's NyOh :) Naomi Ludlow
Re: the tamborine - the drummer has a Roland SPD sample pad on her right, and probably a trigger on the snare rim.
Agree
Love Harry👕📿and One Direction. Great rendition and band. Thanks Fil 😊🧡
I LOVE the original, but I also LOVE this version. I wish he would release it so I didn't have to always watch on youtube. 😄
I was never a fan of his boyband days because I was too old, but as an adult I really like his solo work. Just like someone else said, like George Michael. Im glad Harry got to break away.
Sarah Jones!
He’s an excellent singer.
Beautiful vocal tone.
@@AS-yz2iz indeed.
You need listen "she" by harry styles
Please, react to Harry Styles - Girl Crush (live at BBC). It's a lovely cover and I think that theoretically it might be interesting from technical perspective (harmony-wise at least).
He certainly does do justice to the original. I could see Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer music video playing in my mind as I listened.
The drummer chick is kickin some butt!!!
This is a great cover! Harry made it his own.
The entire song is one big innuendo… unbeknownst to 12 year old me! I love Peter Gabriel’s videos, especially Sledgehammer, Big Time, Steam, amongst others.
