Antique Herbarium Press Restoration

- Late Victorian herbarium - flower press from 1890. Very clearly stamped ‘6893 Downie’s Patent’ number 2. Rest of the stamp is difficult to read. It is used for preparing herbs and flowers for herbariums, but also for pressing the books in some cases. It was really fun object to restore especially because it was a combination of wood, brass and iron.
Height is 9cm (3.5inches)
Width is 29cm (11.4inches)
Depth is 20cm (7.9inches)

What was the black power and fluid that you used to remove the rust from the screws and other small parts?
I enjoy watching your videos, because you do things the way they were done many years ago. A lot of people restore old things but they use moderen tools to do it, you do it the old fashioned way. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, thank you! That is wonderful to hear, much appreciated 🙏
I love the respect you give to the history of every single object.
I really admire you. ❤
Very kind of you, thank you so much 🙏
We entered the time capsule again. As always, detailed and meticulous workmanship. This video was a great Monday surprise, thanks to you, we had a pleasant start to the week. Thank you very much my dear friend. Stay safe and Cheers 🥃
It is always pleasing to read your comments! Thank you kindly my friend. Wish you an outstanding week ahead! Cheers 🥃
Excellent job Boris, a wonderful restoration. I've not seen that design pf press before, not that I'm any sort of expert on flower presses! Thank you for the video which are always a joy to watch. Cheers.
Hey 👋 😃
Glad you enjoyed it! My first thought was that this is a book press, but after finding the stamp and browsing it was an overwhelming discovery. Especially the age of the press.
You are welcome my friend, good to have you here! Cheers
That is marvelous how you restored the old flower press. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work I must say.
What a fine old machine, I still have pressed flowers from a long ago friend. Thank you for preserving this.
Wow! That is awesome 👍
My pleasure 😃
Yippie! A new video to watch-thanks Boris!
Hope you enjoyed it! Cheers
Beautiful job on the restoration. And the flowers at the end are beyond amazing 🤩. Love that you restore and not replace and all by hand. This was a nice treat to see today. 😊
Thanks so much Kathy 😊
Very kind of you, have a good one 👋😃
Excellent work and attention to detail. I also love the tiny tub!
Thank you very much! Yes, a tiny tub is awesome 😅
Nice job!! I have an old hand crank key duplicator machine from the 20’s I will restore this winter👍
Thanks a lot! Very cool! Best of luck 😃
PARABÉNS, é fascinante esse universo da restauração,uma sobrevida para uma peça que fez história.
Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
🤗🤗🤗
That is a neat press.
Many thanks 🙏
I have never seen a device like this before; thanks for featuring it.
As always, an excellent restoration and video (the captions are great!).
Awesome! Many thanks my friend!
Cheers!
Old is surely gold
I couldn't agree more, thanks for watching 👍
Nice work, beautiful object. Best to seal the wood with a film finish. As it seasonally expands it will absorb more humidity without finish. Since wood is fixed with screws to rigid metal bolsters it will likely crack on expansion. Hence the original thick varnish finish.
After watching this video, I thought of a very interesting matter. Namely, I can't find a video anywhere for a long time about the maintenance/repair of a classic typewriter and (more importantly) how to take care of it and how to apply ink to the whole mechanism. Would you be able to share such knowledge with us in the future? It would be great.
Best regards from Poland, cheers
Hey dear friend! Thank you for watching and suggestions for the content. Personally I don't have much of the knowledge to do elaborate video, but this guy definitely has wonderful content on the topic ua-cam.com/video/H4P5Y3RiSr8/v-deo.htmlsi=qukirzxrdp2m8KMJ
Best wishes from Norway!
Друг мой, у вас сказочная мастерская ❤
🤝👋😃
Beautiful build. Unusual restoration, but super interesting. 🎸🔪
Thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏👋😃
New restoration video! Sure takes the ick out of my Monday! What was the black substance in the jar? Thank you Boris! 😊
Hey Kathy 😀
That is good to hear! I used a sandblasting sand combined with a rust removal solution. Best results so far, next time I'll add small stones, sand takes a longer time and I'm pretty sure that I can get better results. Thank you for taking time to watch the video! I appreciate that!
I’ll have to try that. It’s really tough to remove rust from little screws. That sand looks like it worked great! Always great ideas 🎉 thx
