So glad you stopped at firefighters memorial. It's so appropriate to honor all the hardworking firefighters, 1st responders, & volunteers fighting all the CA fires + all the ones coming in from other states to help. THANK YOUs are not nearly enough.

after you get on hwy 191, watch the vistas to the south and you will see the tetons, pretty spectacular as the are 60-70 miles away
This is still from the fire in 1988. When we were there last week Yellowstone Lake had white caps and foam. From what I hear it’s like that most of the time. It reminds me a little of the Great Lakes. They do have a marina on this lake. My parents would fish on this lake and it was good fishing when the lake had white caps. This lake is huge. I was amazed how long it took us.
In West Yellowstone don’t forget to stop at Firehole BBQ right on the main drag. So good. Especially the brisket.
Most of the trees that you were seeing during the climb to sylvan pass were from pine beetles the fire never went down that drainage and the little trees come up on their own after the 88 fires.

That is the blackwater fire memorial. In 1937 a number of fire fighters were killed fighting a forest fire there
So sad.

I grew up 75 miles from the east entrance of Yellowstone and we drove this stretch of Hwy 14 into Yellowstone every summer dodging mobile homes and tourists in search of bears and buffaloes. Your video makes me homesick for Wyoming (in the summer!!!) The dead trees around Yellowstone Lake are beetle damage. The fires (1988) were around Old Faithful and south towards the Tetons. Thanks for appreciating the beauty of Wyoming!
The dead trees were from a very controversial "let it burn" policy. BUT as you see new trees coming back, it takes fire to release pine seeds to grow. Natures way.

I never fly into Jackson Hole. I fly from Dallas to Bozeman, get my rental car (save $300.00--400.00 car and flight) then drive to Livingston, down to Gardiner (nice scenic drive) get my room for a week and the entrance is 2-3 blocks away. I am all over the place from there on. I go on up to Bear Tooth, Cody, and hit places along the way, I always have a good time. Head out early, spend the day come back at dusky dark. (in Aug. it dosen't get dark till close to 9:00pm)
I love the early morning sunrise. 💞 A few years back we did a crosscountry from AZ, NM, TX, OK, CO, NE, SD, MT, WY, ID, NV and back to AZ. At each new location I was up to see the sunrise I did not miss one. A trip never to be forgotten. Thank you for the fun time.

The dead trees are in part due to the Yellowstone Fires from 1989 or so, plus the beetle infestation... The "big lake" is Yellowstone Lake and yes, it's huge.
correction: 1988. Yellowstone gets a lot of big fires. The timber is largely Lodgepole pine, fir, and spruce.
We were there in 1989 after the fires it was pretty devastating but the new growth that you see was lime green against that black burned trees it was really pretty and unfortunately it consumed a lot of that park stayed a week there saw bears , moose and elk lots of wild life

Russ, you should also try the paradise valley drive. West on 90 to Livingston , then left. Beautiful drive . Living in Montana , i with my two shepherds have done practically every nook and corner in my Minnie Winnie .
One would think they would manage the dead trees better It is sad.. Hopefully with Trumps new executive order on national Parks, they might do something to improve the situation. Yellowstone (first national park) is huge. They cant really manage the dead trees, nature will, over the years. Your seeing history.

Was in Yellowstone May 2019. Entered through east entrance and it was snowing. We stopped in our RV at Sylvan Pass to make some snow pictures in the snow. The snow pack was above our head. It sure was cold but the snow wasn't sticking too much.
We were in Yellowstone in September of 1988, just after the fire that burned ONE THIRD of the park! It was a very sad thing to see. James Watt, Reagan's Sec'y of the Interior, decided not to fight the fire until it was too late. He was asked 'Don't you want to save Yellowstone for future generations?' And he answered 'There aren't going to be many future generations.' (Because he believed we were in the Final Days.)
I'm glad to see it's come back as well as it has.
My Aunt Linda and her family lived in West Yellowstone Montana. My Brother and I spent many summers there when we were kids(growing up in the 70's).
I really enjoyed our trip to Yellowstone. Seen Old Faithful the day we were there.
I had to check...193 inches of snow, on average.

1988, 36% of the park burned. Fire started outside the park. 2016 i believe 70K+ acres burned. We were there in 2005 and the results of the 1988 fire were very visible. Try to check out Mammoth Hot Springs at the North end and Norris Geyser Basin.
88 fires started in the park one was due to a campfire and the others were lightning and they all burned together
There is an old legend in Wyoming about a young warrior who was lost in the mountains. His tribe searched for years. He was the Chief's son and they felt their destiny would be bad if they never found him. The searched for many years. His name was Falling Rock!
My Grandfather always had us looking for Falling rock...(he got suck at kick out of it)

One of the more beautiful drives would be through the small towns of New England. I was born and raised in Maine but have lived in a number of places in the U. S. (as well as Europe). In those parts of the U. S in which I didn't live I traveled through, sometimes several times. I lived in California for nearly ten years while working for the federal government and attending Berkeley. California has wonderful state and federal parks. I now reside in St. George, Utah, in one of the most beautiful areas of the U. S. We're central to five of the most exceptional parks in the world. In fact, I just got home from trips through Zions, Gunnlock State Park, and Snow Canyon State Park. So, as Russ would say, "Keep on truckin."
This is the only glimpse of Yellowstone I'll ever see, at my age. I didn't picture it being
just highway. I know there are places you can go off the road, but it's not very apparent.
Hi Russ did a little research on why so many dead and downed trees in Yellowstone, several answers: *High altitude and dry climate, so trees get old but die out; *Great 1988 Fire; Acidity from volcanic activity and *Blowback from high winds...

I was in Yellowstone in July 2019, the pictures just don't do it justice!
I find the burnt areas actually beautiful and are restoring quickly!

I was last here in 06. I remember the huge fires of 1988. It burned roughly 783,000 acres, and when we were there for 5 days, I don't remember seeing those dead trees. Beetles makes sense. I'm living in the Philippines now, but the Western United States has the distinction of having the highest concentration of absolutely stunning National Parks. What I admired most about Yellowstone was the huge assortment of wildlife. I remember during our time visiting, we saw 5 grizzly's, 4 cayote's, 1 fox, bald eagles, and countless bison. Truly a place of wonder!👍💖

We ran into a Buffalo traffic jam coming in from the east, they were walking down the middle of the road .

There was a big fire that went through in 1988, I drove through about 94 and there was NO green at all, mile after mile of just barren tree. I am glad to see its coming back green.

We went to Yellowstone a couple of years ago pulling a 35 foot trailer. No fun pulling that through the park, especially where they were working on the road. Anyway, we were on our way to Cody, thinking we could go out the East Entrance. Nope. It was closed due to threat of avalanche. We had to go out the North Entrance and drive to Billings, which was to be our stop after Cody. A very long day. Enjoyed your video. I finally got to see the East Entrance/Exit. Thank you.
I was pregnant with my first child during the fires of '88. The entire state was covered in ash and smoke and I was so relieved to visit relatives in Colorado that year. Also the little "pit stop" before you get to the east entrance is Pahaska Teepee, one of Buffalo Bill's historic hunting lodges. Probably the same in the group photo you saw in the museum. Take your time, read a little :) Enjoy your videos...Cody was my home for many years, then Hot Springs SD and now Sheridan Wy. Nice to see all my homes with you on the road.

I remember the '88' fire season real well. Sheridan had 4 fires around it from all 4 directions. There was the Yellowstone fire, the Black Hills fire, the Big Horns had a fire near Penrose Park area, and Birney Mt. had a grass fire going, and Crow Agency had their fire that jumpef the interstate.
Sheridan was so overwealmed with smoke that it looked like night hear, and Sheridan Memorial Hospital was full of patients with respiratory problems. What a year that was.
Also, Ritz Sporting Goods went up in flames that year from that female arsonist.

If you leave by the north entrance, you could take a mild white water raft trip in Gardner, Mt.

Love when you "let the camera roll..." There's always great things to view. Today's scenery & the spectacular spires on the mountains after you left the Firefighters' Memorial just seemed to fit an upward homage to those brave men & women who risked their lives so we could enjoy such beauty.
Amazed at all the dead trees. At the lake the trees in the distance looked like they'd been blackened by fire & had burn scars. Maybe?? Happy when you said you saw little trees growing. Back in mid 80s stopped in Cody with my kids on our way to CA. We drove into Yellowstone thru the East entrance. This entire drive all looks new because I haven't seen a single thing that jogs my memory of that trip. My mind must be going.

Was in Yellowstone last year, the first week of August. It’s a sad site to see all of the dead trees. But naturally Mother Nature is replenishing the forest! Hopefully you can check out the Mammoth Hot Spring and Prism Lake. It’s so beautiful! We also stayed in West Yellowstone!! Then did the lower loop! ❤️❤️❤️
Trees were not replanted. Totally natural. Fire actually opens up the canopy of an older forest and it that region a fire germinates lodge pole pine seedlings to establish. I am pretty sure you are seeing some of the historic fires of 1989.

I'm in Colorado and there are trees here like that too. Everyone is told it's the bark beetle but I have my own opinion which I do not want to express here. Anyway, these are beautiful videos Russ. In Yellowstone they don't mess with nature too much. So the little trees are not planted they are naturally grown post fire. You are seeing two different things: in some areas it is beetle kill, in some it is fires that killed the trees. In either case they do not "clean up" the trees. They let it be. This is different then how they manage forests in the National Forest areas. In Yellowstone they are trying to leave it natural as much as they can, which still providing access to humans. It's a tricky thing to balance.

You want a truly packed Yellowstone, go in July. I worked in the park for three summers. Your going at just about the right time actually. Nice camp ground at Pahaska Tepee. That long rig you passed, as you entered the park, was part Horse trailer. Big lake, called Yellowstone Lake, or Lake Yellowstone. Fished it a few times. Yes, Mother Nature has "replanted" the tree's, not people.

Love watching your videos Russ from Australia, I first watched the drive into Yellowstone and have kept watching your videos ever since, seeing as we have missed out on travelling to Yellowstone thanks to Covid-19. They have been great entertainment and a wonderful way to see rural USA. One quick question, what’s the name of the tune you use in your videos? .......I find myself humming it a lot!

We will be coming in from the East pulling a 22 foot trailer. Someone warned us not to take 14, but it looks very doable with lots of pull outs. Loved your video Russ. Love some opinions on doing 14 with a camper.
Just an FYI on the park planting seedlings to replace fire damaged areas. The Lodgepole Pine Trees there have a cool (well hot) survival technique. The seeds it drops will germinate when very high temperatures occur such as fire. They are not planted it is part of nature’s miracle regeneration.
