Proven BJJ Competition Strategy against a Strong Wrestler

  • How do you deal with the Takedown aspect of a Wrestler who's in a Grappling competition? Or what do you do when someone's better at take downs?
As a Wrestler who got into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I can tell you that I used to put a lot of focus on takedowns.
When I would go to a BJJ competition. I would do everything I could in order to get on top of the person.
Oftentimes if someone pulled me into Guard it kind of sucked the wind out of my sails. I wouldn't have the points for getting the takedown and it took away my forward momentum.
In this video I respond to a question from Cassie who has a son, Ryan, who is competing in local superfight matches.
His matches have been going well but she's now noticing that the area gyms are offering more wrestling in their BJJ training. And their gym does not offer it.
The question from them is how do you approach a situation in a competition when your opponent has superior takedowns.
Chad and I both show options as to how we deal with this situation in BJJ tournaments or competitions.
The main idea is to converse your energy on the feet and save it for once you get to the ground. In my case I use a Guard Pull into Half Guard for the sweep.
But I'll save the details and let you see them in the video. :)
    Hope the video is useful!

@Tom Evers Apparently you don't understand the capabilities of what can happen with a fireman's carry, to which I seriously doubt based on your claim. This is only the beginning to many different and very damaging possibilities once the fireman's carry has been executed properly. You, who have claimed to have coached for 20 years should already know this, as well as the damaging effects of the banned action of stacking or otherwise. Just to make sure everyone who reads my reply, I am including an example of a fireman's carry so they too can use their imagination as to what can be done when a fireman's carry is executed properly and what can be done once that has been executed. It might possibly help you to understand better to look at pro wrestling and the many different "gimmick moves" that are used once the fireman's carry has started, leading into the "gimmick move". It's not hard to understand the variables that can be execeuted from that position, and the damage it can inflict, depending on what move is executed once the individual is in the height of the fireman's carry.

This is so important for certain areas of the USA. In my area, wrestling may not be as big as football but it’s still a big thing so a lot of people in my area have grappling knowledge and you do have to adapt to what you are likely going to face most. It’s in fact so popular that at least half of those in the classes I go to wrestled in school, myself included.

What about working on sprawling and transitioning off a sprawl into a figure four giotine? Or using a kimura grip to counter a single leg attempt? Kimura against a single will either break their grip on your leg. It forces the wrestler to let go.Or give you a reversal into a kimura sweep. Which can transition into an armbar. How about sprawling on a double and working the anaconda choke. In mma their are sweeps that have worked well against wrestling bases. Newton vs Hughes 1 Newton used a situp or hip bump sweep to reverse him. Miguel Torres used the butterfly hook sweep and hip bump sweep on Demetrius Johnson successfully.

Most wrestlers know anytime the head is put in that spot that's the perfect situation to take what they've given you and pivot step grab the head and easy peezy to head and arm pin yet in jits to a arm triangle or arm intangle choke.

Hey Chewy, I have a question I've been starting to wonder.
So I am a white belt, been training for maybe a year now (on and off).
I am at a point where I can out-grapple 95% of the whitebelts, whether its passing, escaping, dominant position or submition.
Some are obviously harder than others, but many of them that have been training for less than like ~8 months, its like playing with a child, even though they are going all out. And dont get me wrong, i love to roll with people i know i can dominate because it puts me at ease to practice all my techniques and flow through positions, escapes, etc without relying on my strength.
On the other hand, there is training with the higher belts, where I will try to do my best and try to get a few tips on my weaknesses from that person, which is also useful..
and lastly there is rolling with someone who is more or less just as "dangerous" as you (if you wanna call it that), where youre kinda doing the best you can, but there is a bit more ego and youre going for the win, and a hell of a lot of more energy is expended.
So my question is: which opponent is best for improving my game ? or who should i focus on most ?
    1. under my level ?
    2. above my level ?
    3. at my level ?
Currently, when i roll its : ~40% with someone at my level ~40% under my level 20% above my level

as a wrestler I love these. One of the things I don't do as a wrestler when sparing with BJJ guys is go for takedowns. I've always been a defensive wrestler but a good option for wrestlers is to not go for a forward takedown. take the time to pop use an elbow to pop up an arm left or right... sidestep and go for a side takedown... Ideally (for ME this may not work for others) I want to be either coming in from the side right or left... and if I'm lucky taking them down onto their belly... Also another big thing for wrestlers... learn to use your legs. there are a large number of leg related wrestling skills that I notice many wrestlers don't utilize... and if it isn't obvious... learn some BJJ... we're grapplers there shouldn't be this huge divide between us rolling is half the fun I don't care if you do Judo, BJJ, or Wrestle there should be respect and a feeling of camaraderie between all grapplers.

For every time a person commits to an attack, there is always two or three ways to "react" to said attack. That's the beauty of self defense when done properly. In all reality, the option to react to a commitment (when realized in time) is far better being defense as opposed to offense where one has to commit with an action. The reaction can be more powerful than the action when one knows how to do so. This method of saying "or" simply points out options for the reaction, to where once an action has been committed to, it's rather hard to change until said action is completed.

One thing to note is that if you watched the rubber guard video with the 10th pl black belt (forget his name), he talked about creating space to bring the knee up and keep him from flattening you essentially. One thing that I noticed is that wrestlers like to either smother you in the guard, with all the weight on their shoulders (yay for me), or they sit back on their base (towards their heels). When they sit back, they just create the space you want to create for the rubber guard. Just another option to look for if these other options aren’t working for you

I wrestled D1 in college and am learning BJJ right now. I don't collar tie while standing and all the BJJ guys are completely lost. Lmao.
John Smith at OSU teaches not to collar tie. BJJ guys get so nervous and they either rush to tie up which makes it easier to level change and shoot or they sit on their butts and don't want anything standing. 😅

My coach always tells us to grab the back of the head instead of the neck when holding the collar tie is there any advantage in not doing it?

    • @terryavery9918
      @terryavery9918 3 роки тому

The back of the head grab is only really good for controlling where the opponent can look as well as pulling the head into the chest. The back of the neck is the preferred location to where more holding strength can be applied to force direction and even momentum. Think about striking options as well when considering using these techniques in a real fight. To hold the back of the head with striking is far more dangerous, vs holding the neck and striking areas of the body and is harder to escape.

This is very good. Just be aware a good wrestler will be very difficult to get head position on (since it’s something that is worked on daily at the higher wrestling levels). But this is the way. I’d just stress the need to practice the head positioning. You made it seem like that’s easy to do. I know you wrestled so it’s easy to forget lol. But just remember to stress the head positioning part before people think it’s an automatic thing. Really cool technique though coach. Love it!

Just an observation: if you put your head inside my arm (3:19 in the video), I'd immediately pop my hips to the side (roughly 90 degrees from your head, same position as a standard hip toss) and attempt a headlock to throw you on the side opposite of your head. Hopefully that makes sense, it's pretty hard describing wrestling moves without being able to demonstrate. Come to think of it, why don't I ever see headlocks in MMA? Seems like they'd be great for choking people out (without the arm in).

New to BJJ so don't judge too harshly if I am totally off. Have not wrestled since Highschool but have used my grappling skills on the street as a LEO. So as a short wrestler, with tall Chad there, when he sits down I just need to recognize what he is doing and either step back, if I can, or drop straight down on top of him and slide down to his ankles and turn him over with a leg twist? What I don't understand about BJJ is how they score points in a match. Do you only win if you get a submission or what? On the street if I see someone has these skills I just go straight to a baton as the skill level of our criminals has increased dramatically and I can risk getting choked out and loosing my gun. So it's either stick them or shoot them.

Not a single mention of conditioning. When I wrestled, a huge part of it was keeping up the pressure. Because you're going for the takedowns and the pin, you're going full out the entire time. Compared to wrestling, jiu jitsu is slow and methodical. It's just a difference in the style, especially since wrestling is more of a pure sport vs. BJJ that was developed more with combat in mind and moved into being a sport. Not knocking BJJ in any sense either, I'm just pointing out what I see as differences.
Anyway, wrestlers are constantly going full speed and looking to takedown the other guy who is working just as hard to get you down. Takedowns are worth points and points win matches. Wrestlers get a lot of their conditioning from simply rolling a lot. The strong backs and iron hips come from constantly busting ass in practice. It's fighting fit, so to speak. Your conditioning has to be good, because you're going full blast for your entire match. The wrestler likes to be on top because it allows them to press that advantage of constant pressure and fast pace that lots of BJJ players aren't used to.
One thing I noticed in going from wrestling and trying out BJJ is that a BJJ player has an entire library of techniques that can take advantage of a wrestler trying to escape. Especially if the wrestler is wearing shoes. A heel hook can catch a wrestler out more often than you might think. Collegiate wrestlers simply don't train for that sort of thing very much, because an escape isn't something you're specifically guarding against. If your technique is good, escape isn't really all that likely. And if you do lose them and they escape, it's far more important to get reset to avoid the reversal. This all has to happen fast, because as soon as they escape, they want the reversal. You need to get defensive to avoid getting taken. A BJJ player is far more relaxed and capable of extending that scramble for it to come out in their favor. Especially since submissions are OK in BJJ vs. how you have to win in a wrestling match.

In MMA just don't pull any guard. Beeing on your back in MMA isn't a good idea. Look at MMA Fights, the most fighters will immediately try to stand up when they end up on their backs. Punching from above is a critical factor in a MMA fight. Maybe if you are very good at BJJ you have the chance to act calmly before the first punch landed. Once punches are landing on your face your BJJ skills will decrease fast. So be quick and get to top position or try to stand up.

Where i succeed against jiu jitsu guys is tie ups, scrambles takedowns, and top pressure all these combined i usually ride my opponent and wear them down for the bout.
