Building a Custom Plenum on a Bearhawk Bushplane to help with high cylinder temperatures

- Using a press brake, shrinker and some other hand tools I make a plenum to help cool this motor. I use time lapse for the construction and explain the steps taken.

Nice work👌
I love how just like when I am working in the garage on a project your dog likes to hang out and sniff everything we are working on. Cracked me up to see it in fast forward.
Every time
Just properly installed baffle seals is all that is needed. The top cowl is a plenum when the seals are done right.
You’ll get more effective temp control by opening up & controlling the outlet on the bottom of the cowl with a lip to create a low pressure to
Really nice. That’s a handsome merle you have, too.
Thanks, he’s just over 1 year old so there’s lots of trining to do yet
@@flyweldfabricate We have a one-year-old female merle Border that looks a lot like him. Training all the time.
I like plane names, they sound like adventure is built right in. "BEARHAWK"!
They’re an awesome plane! Solid kits
Both Continental and Lycoming specify less than 1 sq inch of total baffle not sealing the high pressure and low pressure sides. 1/8” gap in the baffle seal equals a lot of lost cooling air. Low performance engines, not a huge deal, high performance (ie cowl flaps) is a huge deal.
Thanks for the info, I didn’t know that
@@flyweldfabricate I was working at a flying club, the Mooney 231 had excessively high chts. Climb had to have the cowl flaps wide open, in cruise they couldn’t even close the cowls...ever. I replaced all the baffle seals and closed every gap I could find. Afterwards the owner said he could climb with the cowls 1/2 open and in cruise they were always shut regardless of the conditions, he said it was like a new plane. I got all my info from the Lycoming and Continental factory reps. Air control is critical in high performance installations.
Pretty sweet metal break! Little too close to the ground for me to want to use. But still awesome none the less
It’s to heavy and I’m too lazy to get it on a table. I hate working that low too
man you are talented when it comes to metal working, class project in A&P school was to build a simple aluminum tool box with the metal brake, ya needless to say it wasnt right by anymeans, but it held tools hahaha
Thanks man, hoping to add some cool projects in the near future
Doing a plenum on our Bearhawk 5 as well. How did it help your buddies temps? We installed them also on our Velocity (canard pusher) and have no issues on hot summer days.
It helped a bit but he needs to evacuate the air from the bottom of the cowl now
