    Pete, I want to thank you you're encouragement has made it to where I feel more confident and I have painted a few paintings that I am incredibly proud of. Yesterday I read damaged the ankle that I shattered 2 1/2 years ago and so I am laid up in bed for a few weeks. However I did as a treat to myself so that I can still work a little bit get myself the museum aquarelle landscape set so that I can at least draw which is my specialty and activate them with water I have one of these pencils for 4 years and was finally able to get them because I had a gift certificate LOL I look forward to every video that you do and all the word art styles are very different I am so pleased to have you as an online friend to look to you for advice and encouragement. Thank you so much for everything you do for our community you are just so wonderful to listen to and watch.

    I really love all my Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints. I’m glad you’re testing them out. You know I’ve painted with mine quite a bit and framed some. None have faded, but then they are behind uv protective glass and no direct sun on them. Really fun paints!

    Thank you this is great information. I’m totally new to watercolour actually I’m a fibre artist and I’m looking for a watercolour look that I can paint on fabric. I was hoping these paints might work because of the different binders. The fact that it didn’t run might work to my benefit as fabric (cotton) tends to soak up pain5 and it’s difficult to keep it where you want. So your information will help but I’ll probably still have to buy and try on fabric to see if it works. If you have used any on fabric I’d like your opinion. I giggled when you spoke about your paint colour preferences as I agreed 99%. lol…

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  2 місяці тому +1

      I'm glad you found this useful! You may want to look at Derwent inktense blocks. They are advertised for fabrics and are fantastic with their color selection. They are bright and vibrant so if you want more muted tones you'll need to add a lot of water. I have used them as watercolor before and they do a great job but they are permanent. I have not tried these on fabrics though. I hope that helps. 🙂

    • @yp8dx
      @yp8dx 2 місяці тому

      @ yes, thank you I’ve used Dewent both the blocks and the pencils and they work but the colours (🇨🇦 spelling color with a u ha ha ) are intense and occasionally I’d like more soft pastel colours so that’s why I’m looking at Kuretake Gansai Tambi. If I add more water the fabric soaks it up and blurs the design too much. I’ll let you know when I give them a try but I’m glad I can subscribe to your channel as I really enjoyed this. I might have to buy some paper and have a go. Actually I do similar designs by painting the colour on fabric (or using coloured fabric) then I use black stitching lines to add the details like you do with a marker. Thanks for the reply and for sharing your art.

    in regards to the light fastness of the paints kuretaki says that they are like fast if used as directed. For example, these paints are meant to be used as opaque paints that are similar to gouache like the packaging says. However, when you dilute the paint, and use it as watercolor, the more water you use the less effective it will be as a light fast paint. i see a lot of people who use lots of water and say the paints are not lightfast, so the rumor is “its NOT lightfast,” based on improper use. i have yet to see someone test the paint at full strength. That’s something that i would like to see to confirm if kuretake is correct or if the artists are correct.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  5 місяців тому +1

      I went straight from the pan to the page so I might be ok. That is a little ambiguous though. What is "dilute"? It's not a specific amount so I probably wouldn't risk it if I was asking someone to pay money for a painting. However, I don't mind at all. I loved these and I have no problem using them in my sketchbook or on a scanned illustration. They are great. Thanks for the info. 👍🏻

      @@IllustrationsByPete You are welcome. I have no idea what is too much water. I was just summarizing what kuretake stated. As for the videos that I saw where it was stated the colors are not lightfast, it was a lot of water being used. That being said I love the paints also, but I wouldn't use it to sell original art. But that is why I want to see a full strenght lightfast test. I gave my paints to my niece with the intent of buying the big set, but when artists stated that the paint wasn't lightfast I have been hesitant in buying them.

    PY3 is better but dépends on a manufacturer but not as lightfast as PY175, the same for PV23. I think they used less ligthfast pigments for price reasons.
    Anyway. Their earth colors, yellow ochre no.44 (PY42) and burnt sienna no.46 ( PR101) are just beautiful❤.

      Reminds me of how the Belgian biscuit maker brand Lotus cornered the market with their speculoos biscuits and now everyone outside of Belgium thinks they invented them and calls them under the Lotus rebranded (for the foreign market) name of Biscoff. Speculoos are traditional Belgian (and Dutch) biscuits, btw. Biscoff is just a rebrand (and a recent one - in Belgium they used to be sold as just as generic speculoos by Lotus). There are thousands of companies, bakers and different people making different brands of speculoos in Belgium. But abroad… it’s Biscoff 😂

    👍 analysis. Some of the vintage Japanese color names are lost in translation, no doubt trying to be relatable to the modern western understandings. Ex. #48 is ‘hiwa’ color, a type of Asian finch. # 60 ‘ruri’ color, lapis or sky blue. #71 chestnut. Old days the colors came as pigments in little glass bottles one mixed with a binder as needed.

      @@IllustrationsByPete even Japanese water color artists get a kick out of the beautiful old fashioned color names, words not in everyday use now, but when written quite understandable as the complex Chinese characters mean things where the sound of the word is often secondary. A little bit like how you process pigment numbers. Fun!

      Absolutely. The tones and emphasis in Chinese and Japanese are definitely lost on a western ear. Poetic phrases as names can be wonderful. 👍🏻

      @@IllustrationsByPete I mean you can visualize a color by the pigment number, pigment being a thing, without processing words which is in a separate part of the brain. Chinese characters which Japanese borrowed, one sees the pictograph character & boom same thing, know without ‘words’. It can be faster and more precise.

    I received a tiny set of these in a sketchbox grab bag and absolutely loved them! I was surprised how beautiful they go down. My only reason for not getting a set was that the pans are so big. But I just found a half pan set today after watching your video. So now I have to get it but I don't need it because I already bought some other half pans for my a travel set. Quite the dilemma.

    That shade of Indian Red is the same as Crayola crayon Indian Red. These paints don’t really impress me much. I’ll stick to my buddies at Qor. I have heard that these really aren’t meant to be mixed a lot. Some of the colors they make are beautiful but I think they might mix too muddy for me and too transparent for gouache. They do make a tiny set that has something like 4 colors, including metallic gold, so I might try that set.

      They aren't for everyone. They mix differently than most other paint but almost all of the paint on my pages are mixed. They mix but also stay separate. It's hard to explain.

    If you compare an indigo or sap green to any other high-quality paint, you will see how off their colors are. No gradation, but I have serious doubts about the light fatness.

    These aren’t really traditional watercolors .They are more like sumi ink as they have a different type of binder which is lacquer or glue based as well as a higher pigment load . They aren’t meant to be layered like traditional watercolor . They are beautiful but my favorite are the granulating type .

    You cannot be sure a lightfast pigment is lightfast in a mix. A lightfast pigment might not be lightfast when it's tinted out. You have to look at the pigment itself, and see if it has lightfastness in tints. Sometimes you can tell by the color itself that it has a lot of a pigment that is not very lightfast when tinted. Then you know that as long as you don't tint too much the color will be lightfast. However, the only way to know for sure is to test the colors, it seems anymore that many companies are not testing their pigments and just relying on records of the ATSM or other testing companies.
