My experience with masking fluid is that it's like oil and vinegar salad dressing. The masking fluid repels the water. Using soap makes it easier to clean your brush, but it can partly act like an emulsifier, mixing the fluid and paint together in one goopy mess. It can be beautiful, but don't expect any control, lol. Many soaps are designed to bond with dirt and grease, then rinse away taking the grime with it. They don't actually "clean" the grime, they just make it slippery so it can be flushed off and down the drain. I suspect that the type and brand of soap needs to be very specific. I also need to remember that painting a lot of water over the dry masking fluid means it will pool on top or run off the edges, adding to the amount of liquid. If an area is half covered in masking fluid and I paint over it normally, it often ends up with twice the needed water/pigment on the exposed part. One trick I use is to blot the masking fluid as the paint beads up, taking it out of the equation entirely. If I don't, the edges around the masked area can end up darker and sharper looking, or do odd things with flow and drying. That said, it can be a lovely effect, especially when you let loose instead of trying to control exactly how the paint responds. If you want nice clean lines and very white areas, use the masking fluid straight from the bottle, on dry paper, and applied relatively thickly. I have only been successful when using a cheap or old clean brush, and synthetic bristles are a must. I don't expect to be able to use the brush for anything else after that. I have also had good luck using the handle, toothpicks, and other various items from around the house, and even sponges and stamps. Many people like to use ruling pens too, but anything works if it doesn't scratch the paper and leaves a thick enough layer. My biggest mistakes have been leaving it on for weeks so the paper was yellowed when I removed it, and trying to rub it off with fingers that were not as clean as I thought. I finally bought a "masking fluid removal tool" at the art store, which is just an eraser as far as I can tell. If your paper is completely dry, it's easy to remove. You can then soften the painted edges with water, add more paint, or whatever your heart desires. I have only been partially successful with using masking fluid over painted areas, as wax is used as a resist in batik. I highly recommend testing it with every single color, as it can pull off some of the pigment, similar to lifting. Don't spread it around on the paper agressively, but rather just apply a light layer without disturbing it much. Masking fluid can be intimidating, and needs to be played with a bit to understand, but it's absolutely worth it. It allows for a great deal of precision, but also for a lot of happy accidents. I can't imagine not having it in my supplies, and it's really fun.
@@patchoulicolt7093 I am rather new to watercolors myself, so I have made an entire set of recent mistakes, lol. Lots of freshly learned wisdom about the best way to not do things. The granulating colors a gorgeous! My tips for using masking fluid - use old brushes because it's hard to get the masking fluid out completely ; or use the silicone brushes to apply. Once you are ready to lift the masking fluid, use an erasure.

I listened to this video (and watched it on and off) while brainstorming an open-access art education resource for one of my summer classes. definitely felt the hope and joy you radiate making its way into my process. :) thank you for everything you do.
I saw someone else video these and they blew my mind. I had to go right out and buy them. They came in a few days ago and they really are MAGICAL!❤ I am so obsessed 😍!
I was so excited to see your creativity at work with inks and granulating watercolors. What a great idea to use masking fluid to paint the main subject of your art. Rangers spray inks in various colors is another cool way to create a beautiful background. Not as messy as pouring ink directly onto your paper.
I love your nail colors this time! They look like my collection of various handmade watercolors......earthy but bright but earthy and yummy----Ooooooh! Also, the paint is way cool! I love granulating colors and lots of Masha's Watercolors---a handmade paint maker--are granulating. Beautiful effects and I use them a lot, and have found that they work best with different technique than straight up watercolors. They like to be patted and poked and prodded and they create such fascinating textures. Love them.

Amazing product and super amazing video. Tons of info. You make it so much easier to jump into something new. Thank you. Have a super freakin' awesome day.
This particular set isn’t even popping up for me at all. The link shows 3 different sets, but not this one. I even went to the Kuretake Amazon store to click on the item shown and it sent me to the same 3 sets to choose from, none of which are these colors. Is this one brand spanking new and now on back order or something or am I missing something here?!
One thing about the masking fluid that I don’t think anyone has mentioned yet (apologies if they have), is that the paint/ink can pool on top. Because the paint/ink doesn’t adhere to the masking fluid in the same way as it does to paper, when you go to lift the masking fluid off you can end up with smears across the work from the pooled colours being pulled onto unprotected areas. Care is definitely needed! It is probably a good idea to blot the masked areas before trying to remove the masking fluid and possibly also whilst working, in order to minimise the amount of pooled paint/ink. People might also want to be careful with how they remove the masking fluid, rolling it onto itself as much as possible rather than dragging it onto areas of unprotected paper, in order to minimise the chances of smearing … which is, of course, way easier said than done.
Ugh!! I'm in Sweden and am dying to get ahold of those paints! What you did turned out gloriously, AND, I loved the sound effects you were doing with your voice - priceless!

Kristy I just received your 48 pan watercolor palette and wanted to tell you that it is absolutely beautiful. The art work on it is perfect. I adore the vintage sort of colors. Thumbs up!!! I would love to see you do some paintings with these colors.
I ordered the empty botanical theme palette, and it's awesome. The cover design is subtle enough to keep from being distracting, but much less modern and antiseptic feeling. The first two pallette I bought were plastic, and the mixing areas stained immediately. Also, one of them had areas for paint on both the top and bottom, so you had to wait for them to dry before closing it. This palette not only solved those problems, but also allows me to flip the lid shut whenever my cat is determined to step in paint or shed all over it, lol. I only have two tiny criticisms and hesitate to even mention them. First, the rose gold is gorgeous, but combined with the silver of the lifting clips, seems a little odd. I would make it all one color of metal, but others may like it better this way. Second, I don't like having text on the cover, but that is just personal preference. I really appreciate that it is just a short, cheerful phrase and that the name branding is on the back where it belongs. Overall, I would definitely buy it again. Being able to rearrange the color pans is awesome, there are good mixing surfaces, it holds a ton of colors while not bring bulky, and I enjoy using it. The price was also very reasonable, and I would have saved a lot of money by buying this quality item in the first place. ❤

How did you get the masking fluid off? It looks stunning, especially with the pops of gold!! ✨️ I love how you make it ok to play with the watercolors!! 🎨
I recently bought this set too and I absolutely love them! They're so fun to paint and play with. (Just curious, for having a moto "Art for Joy sake". the use of the word Bully, bulling etc is used a lot, the first 2 or 3 times was whatever but for some this can be distracting and maybe triggering. I could just be over reacting but for someone who has been bullied, it was kind of hard to watch and focus on the painting.)
I'm so sorry. I was and still am that little fat girl from school years who was physically and mentally abused because of my size, so trust me I get the bullying trigger. I've chosen to reclaim the word for something positive. I absolutely appreciate the feedback though :)
I really like the Aurora pigments, but I'm more into your beautiful red ceramic palette. I want to find one like it. Can you tell me where you got it? Or at least give me a hint so I can Google it? Thanks and thanks and thanks for all you do and your awesome and vibrant personality. BTW, I try to visit as time permits but I do not have the skills but love the medium. I couldn't do it even if my life depended on it, lol.
My dog died, so I didn't do art for a year (just too painful because she wasn't there next to me). I went to revisit a watercolor piece with masking fluid that was on my easel in the sun for a year and it sank into the page and now I can can't even work on it, it was a watercolor painting of my dog, too. All sketched out. Was using masking fluid so her image would look like it was sitting on top of her bed (which was finished). Anyone know how to peel year and a half old making fluid off that's sunk into the paper?😅
Is there a trick to ordering these from the Amazon link? All of the details show info on the other sets. I'm used to other products saying out of stock if they carry it but are currently out. How have others gotten this?
And…I’ve found these paints are more separating, then granulating, and the more water the better their effects. My dirty water jar usually separates into several colors and is pretty enough to paint LOL
I haven't even watched this and I tried to buy using your link but the gem colors comes up, not the granulating.... Ummm Houston we have a watercolor problem 😂😂... Now I have to find them and then finish watching 😁
I super enjoyed this video with the magical paints and the layering and the masking fluid. It sounded like you also put masking fluid on top of paint. Besides your batik experience, it reminded me of creating Ukrainian Easter eggs. Was this the highlights of a Patreon session? Will you be posting a final photo after the masking fluid is removed? This was so exciting. I haven't played with my set yet. Also, that ceramic palette is so beautiful.
You might want to check your description, I was looking for the link to the paints and there’s a lot going on in that description statement. lol auto correct failed you I think. All love tho!❤
@KristyRice Kristy, I did NOT mean to sound critical or snarky--you're my Watercolor Hero!! I considered buying that set but found a slightly larger set of White Nights granulating pans, and they performed very well with the swatches.

Whoa! I cringing you dipping those Fave Brush (by yours) in Masking Fluid 😩😫😵💫 ....even with soap. Sorry, but I would only use "bad brush" I don't care for to use for "painting masking fluid". How did you get the masking fluid off? It looks stunning, especially with the pops of gold!! ✨️ I love how you make it ok to play with the watercolors!! 🎨
White eraser :)
@@KristyRice Ahhhh!! 👍 Sweet! 🤗
Is Love ❤❤❤❤❤ theright word for this paint sure looks fun.
I think so!
Mine are on the way😊❤❤❤ can't wait!!!
Oh lucky you!! Think they’re sold out now!!
@@KristyRice grabbed them as soon as I saw them....I'm learning...lol FSS in full gear🤣
How have others gotten this?
eBay right now is best bet :( They are sold out everywhere
And…I’ve found these paints are more separating, then granulating, and the more water the better their effects. My dirty water jar usually separates into several colors and is pretty enough to paint LOL
Yes good point. There is some definite liberties being taken with the “granulating” description :)
i don't see these granulating colors on amazon? or anywhere!
They’ve been sold out for weeks :(
The day that everyone started posting videos about these they were no longer available anywhere. All gone. No magic for me! (Until they restock, lol)
They will :)
Gorgeous …..❤absolutely beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
I haven't even watched this and I tried to buy using your link but the gem colors comes up, not the granulating.... Ummm Houston we have a watercolor problem 😂😂... Now I have to find them and then finish watching 😁
I’m hearing from everyone that they’re sold out :(
How can I buy these? They don’t show up when I search Amazon. This video is there but no way to order.
They are sold out :(
Oh my god 😧 I love these 😍😍😍
They’re awesome
@@KristyRice I'm definitely getting them
I super enjoyed this video with the magical paints and the layering and the masking fluid.
Thank you so much! The piece shown at the end was the final with all the masking fluid off :)
Wow 😮 speechless 😲
Well thanks!! Have you tried granulating paint before?
@@KristyRice no I really haven't tried them. I'm due.
You might want to check your description, I was looking for the link to the paints and there’s a lot going on in that description statement. lol auto correct failed you I think. All love tho!❤
Ok thanks!
Also, did you not remove the masking fluid to expose the white??
I did :)
@KristyRice Kristy, I did NOT mean to sound critical or snarky--you're my Watercolor Hero!! I considered buying that set but found a slightly larger set of White Nights granulating pans, and they performed very well with the swatches.
I searched everywhere for these and finally found them IN STOCK(!!) at St. Louis Art Supply. I can't wait and I hope I have as much FUN with them as you do!!
Can’t find them even with your link? Maybe they stopped making them? 😢
They have been out of stock for weeks :(
Whoa! I cringing you dipping those Fave Brush (by yours) in Masking Fluid 😩😫😵💫 ....even with soap. Sorry, but I would only use "bad brush" I don't care for to use for "painting masking fluid". But you're braver than me, 🤭😆😂.
But oh so looks great!
I ordered this Kuretake Granulating set myself on a whim. But I've been sorta mixing W&N Granulating Medium on other Kuretake paints and "non-granulating" Watercolors.
❤❤❤❤
I retired that brush to masking only now lol!!!
Just Wow!!!
Hahaha they blew my mind!
Ohhh I need these!!!
So good
I barely have words too because I was supposed to be doing something when your video caught my eye, and now I can't remember what the heck it was I was supposed to be doing! AAAAAGGGGH ADHD brain. So guess I'll sit here and watch the rest of the video now hahaha
I feel every word of this. But glad you’re here!!!
How are they so reasonably priced?!
Kuretake always does a good job in that department :)
I am so freakin mad that I just found these two days ago and they're already sold out everywhere. 😭 Life isn't fair!😂
It’s crazy!
Where is that ceramic palette from!?
Everybody likes these
I now understand sweat and why!
bought supervision last yr.
Yess I grabbed supervision a few years ago from Aliexpress but these are even more… wild and unpredictable!
I cannot find these on Amazone
They are sold out :)
Why not call them Aurora borealis
Good question!
What’s the buzz? Fun is what’s happening!
Hmmmmmmmmm!!!
I like your channel 😃 so energetic
Thank you so much 😁
So I put those paints in my Amazon cart and waited till this am to purchase and they’re sold out 😭😭😭😂
I know :( Seems like they went obscure in the last few days
@@KristyRice they just became available again on Amazon and I ordered two lol
WOW🎉❤
Yay! So fun! Thanks for watching :)
I ran to find these to buy, and I can only find them for $35 on ebay. Where are they for sale that's not ebay? Is that even a fair price? Their other small sets aren't that price.
I have a link to them on Amazon in the description here. They retail for $25
@@KristyRice Thank you. I went and ordered it, I don't care if I have to wait weeks. It's weird that it doesn't come up on amazon if I do a search for it, but it does from your link.
