  • I have wanted this set since it came out so when I saw it back in stock I snapped it up! Blick has the best price and will be in stock 3/13 shrsl.com/3xwxe
I bought it from this listing on Amazon: amzn.to/3HLQigV they also have the new 100 set that contains all of the colors available as well as the original 24 sets so check to make sure you are getting the set you want.
    *also available here shrsl.com/3wwu7
    Pros:
    Price
    Gorgeous selection of colors
Smooth, streak-free finish on most papers
    Large pans for big brushes
No duplicates with the original 48 set
    Cons:
    Large footprint
No mixing area (moot point as these colors are not for mixing)
Bottom line: This is a nice addition to a watercolor collection if you like pre-mixed curated collections. These offer a fun jump-start to a project with colors that looks great together. They are a lot of fun to use.

Late breaking news: We just received the following from the manufacturer indicating that, aside from specific colors listed, these sets are now vegan: "Thank you for your email. Actually, we've just achieved changing the material of Gansai Tambi to vegan materials! As your customer said, originally the moisturizer in the Gansai was animal-derived oil, but we changed it vegan material from the February production. So now, you can say that Gansai Tambi is vegan product. But please note that only normal colors are vegan, some specialty colors like Metallic and Pearl colors in below sets are NOT vegan.

MC20PC/6V GANSAI TAMBI "Pearl Colors" 6 color set
MC20GC/6V GANSAI TAMBI "Gem Colors" 6 color set

As usual, the color swatches are spectacular! The color really looks more vibrant on watercolor paper, brighter than one might expect from the appearance of the cakes. Since animal-derived, oyster shell white came up as a topic, we thought we should mention that Asian traditional watercolors often use an animal-derived, protein binder (nikawa), as do Sumi ink sticks. Not all modern versions of these products use the historical formulas, and we haven't yet found the binder information for this brand (the SDS just says "resin, water-soluble) so we're going to delve a little deeper. When we get a definitive answer, we'll post it here.

I had to laugh when you talked about that "country pink" color trend of the mid-90s. Still remember my mom making a stencil chair rail border in the living room, of little potter's pink flowers with dusty green stems and leaves. 😂

Dusty Rose definitely started in the early 80s, I remember because I graduated in '86 and before that I remember having a ballet performance where we wore dusty rose leotards as part of the costumes. It was the most popular color!! Come to think of it we also did a piece celebrating the restoration of a local theater which was built in the art nouveau era and we used the colors they used to decorate the theater. Ahhh, memories 😅

It's now 4 months later and I still paid $43 and change total on Amazon. They cost less on Blick when in stock but with shipping for one item, it's about the same and Amazon is faster. I have this set too, but haven't really had time to play with it, just admire its beauty...! I just noticed though, the colors may look random, but they're actually color coordinated, side by side; 4 yellowish, 4 pinkish, 4 purplish, 4 bluish, 4 greens & 4 browns. I thought about rearranging mine too, but I now plan to leave them in their original order 🤩

Hi Lindsay. Thanks for this. I just received both my 48 set and this nouveau set. The kuratake website says yes lightfast as long as you do lot add too much water. And the full pigment chart for all the colors is available on the site too. I printed it off. They also have a download with extra swatch cards for all 100 colors. My understanding is that they are supposed to be in between a Watercolor and gouache. This is why I love them. The colors are rich or soft depending on how you use them.

I just got this from Amazon because they are just so beautiful and I love anything Art Noveau and vintage style. I love that they have amazing colours that match perfectly together just out of the tin. Sometimes you want to mix colours and do things "the right way an artist should" (I do not believe in this by the way but have heard it said like this) and others you just want to play and have fun and create art without having to scream your head off when you get 4 times a mud/sh1t colour. Don't ask... you don't want to know. 😉 Thanks for the review, I was about to buy from seeing other reviews but this totally convinced me. I would have loved to get the 100 anniversary set but it was way too expensive here and I did already have the other main colours which I still have a lot of, so could not justify it to myself.

  • @JennaGetsCreative
    @JennaGetsCreative Рік тому +2

"Gansai Tambi" the full phrase, basically meaning "aesthetic paint," is the line name yes. "Gansai" on its own though it's Kuretake's word, it's the Japanese word for this type of paint. They're based on sumi inks and they're glossy and more opaque than western watercolours because they don't use gum arabic as the binder. I'm not sure what Kuretake uses but gansai has been bound with all sorts of things including animal glues, beeswax, and sugar. This means anything labelled "gansai" is not necessarily vegan-friendly, for artists who consider that.

I have personally never used any of Kuretake gansi tambi paints but have always been curious about them. Do you think you could do a tutorial with them on rice paper? I know that you did a painting on crumbled up wet masa paper ( I dont remember what paints you used but im pretty sure it was just regular watercolors and also idk if thats spelled correctly). I just think it would be a cool video/tutorial but not sure what experience you have with painting on rice paper so maybe not a tutorial. Have a great day!

Oooo… I love these colors! I’ve been 👁️👁️ at these since I first heard about them. I’m in struggleville with justification. I also like the Graphite set. Still holding out for my biggest want-monster set - Mijello’s pure pigment. My birthday is next month, maybe someone will love me enough to get all 3. Dreaming! Thanks for the great review! ❤

I really am not a fan of this set, but I'll probably end up getting it because of all the reviews, ha-ha. It's nice. If you want to see these colors, visit some of the rooms of my house that haven't yet been updated. Thankfully the olive green was gone by the 80's. The deeper blue is actually somewhat current.

I just did some mixing with the Yusutomo Gansai paints. Smallpallette, the bright yellow was the only color that missed well with the rest. I'm going to do it again. I think something went wrong.

Welp, I just bought the 48 set, hopefully your affiliate link worked even though I navigated to a different page. The pastels just appeal to me so much and I considered just the small pastel set or this one, but alone they just aren't very versatile! So the 50 set has some pastels but I have to admit the greens are soooo nice in this one. It seems like it'd be good for soft landscapes.

It is worth noting that GANSAI is not really a brand name as much as a category of paint. They are extremely similar to watercolors and can be used as watercolors but are considered more a part of the Nihonga art tradition than as "watercolors" - a dear friend of mine gave me a small set of Gansai years ago and I love them. When I received them I said (in Japanese) "Oh - are these watercolors?" and she said "No - they are different, they are "Gansai". She explained to me that they dissolve in water just like watercolors, but that they were something distinctly different and profoundly Japanese in nature compared to watercolors.
I actually double checked and mine aren't even from Kuretake, the are from a different brand.

Hay Lindsay, I'm late to the game on this palette, $60 was just too steep for me... I just noticed today that the price has dropped to $36 and there's a 10% off coupon. That makes it about the same price I got the Kuretake 48 colors for last fall... but it's the lowest I've seen this set ever.
