I love Ethel and I'm also a swiftie, they're both the best strongwriters and storytellers of the century but since one is mainstream and the other isnt you love to put one down and just because Ethel makes a certain type of music you consider it idk more deep or more meaningful. Art is always meaningful in pop or gothic and if you don't see that you're just elitist
@ Taylor’s music is not artistic at all. It’s commercial. Ethel’s is pure artistry. I don’t like Taylor swifts music because it isn’t good. Her lyric writing is not one of the best of a century. That’s like putting her on the same level as singers like Fiona Apple- a much more deserving lyricist than Taylor swift
@@canigetawhatwhat6729 Of course she is commercial as Beyoncé is, as Rihanna, Mariah Carey, every big female artist made things for the big media but that still doesn't undermine their work. I'm pretty sure you didn't give AN OUNCE of your attention to Taylor's best work like Cowboy like me, this is me trying, idk, How did it end? There is so much to her that is so out of the mainstream and of the commercial and you're judgemental, you are!
Some odd takes, esp to ptolemaea gotta say. If you don’t like it, okay, but like… that was a very odd rant. It’s meant to evoke distress, it’s about a girl being murdered. How else would you convey that? She’s dying and going to the ninth circle of hell and then going to heaven. Like, that’s gonna be disturbing. I love that song, people don’t just listen to it because they wanna “shock their friends”. 😕
To be fair, I did qualify that. They both have incredibly vivid ways of writing memories. To the point that I really feel like I’m there with them. To me, there isn’t any other artists really doing that right now, other than Taylor and Ethel
completely understand your reactions to some of the songs given it's a conceptual album that follows a storyline, and without context you can miss why certain tracks exist or are in the order that they are. was nice to hear your thoughts on it!
Thumbs up for reacting to the album. Debut LP album, but she has quite a few EPs. The disparity between y'all's reaction to the "mouth" line really made me laugh. Ethel, bit of an unreliable narrator. Also, Hayden has pointed out in live streams that the first and last tracks are tonal bookends and that although they add to the narrative, the story truly begins with "American Teenager" & ends with "Sun Bleached Flies." I highly recommend checking out some of their live performances clips here on UA-cam. *My biggest critique of the album is that the outro to "Thoroughfare" should have been a separate track, an interlude., especially since it acts as a sorta bridge between scenes, "Gibson Girl" feels like a hard-left turn w/ out that sort of space. Checkout Angel Olsen "All Mirrors" album; Waxahatchee "Tigers Blood;" Tommy Guerrero "No Mans Land;" The Civil Wars "The Civil Wars;" School Of Seven Bells "SVIIB" 🙏🏼😊 Godspeed
also, the interludes i think are two of the most important pieces on the album because august underground is basically ethel dying and televangelism is her ascent to heaven. if you listen to the album while following the storyline i think it's more clear on the intentions of where they were put and why and is actually very emotionally impactful:)
the whole album is a concept album that follows the storyline of ethel's life and death which is why there wasn't rlly any other places to put the interludes on the album, since they aren't JUST instrumentals but a representation of her death in that point of the story (after being drugged up by isaiah in gibson girl and ptolemaea)
Emo Taylor Swift is crazy 💀
Hahahaha, right?😭
Taylor swift wishes her artistry could match Ethel cain’s. Ethel is way above.
SAY IT LOUDER⏰️🫖⏰️🫖⏰️🫖
Yeah literally like the title alone made me so mad like WDYM AN “EMO” TAYLOR SWIFT???? She’s above Taylor in EVERY single way

oh never compare ethel to that woman ever again
Everyone is so feminist until they aren't. "That woman" is crazy

Like you guys missed the part where she was murdered and eaten?? 😭
Why does everyone compare everything to taylor swift, thats like comparing slipknot to beyonce.
To be fair, I did qualify that. They both have incredibly vivid ways of writing memories. To the point that I really feel like I’m there with them.

She’s proves that trans women can be goddesses
Taylor Swift???😭😭😭were you both of crack while reacting to this lmao. If anything there’s Florence + Lana influence than anything else.
August Underground: Ethel is murdered
Televangelism: Ethel’s soul ascends to heaven

I love this album so much. Thank you for reacting to it
