  • MotoMan presents one of the worst kept automotive secrets of the past year, the all-new, 2025 @MazdaUSA CX70! In short, the @MazdaOfficial CX-70 is a two-row version of the Mazda CX-90 however, aside from confirming that the Mazda CX-70 will also be on offer with an inline 6 as well as a PHEV, that is about all Mazda shared with us so MotoMan takes deeper look into the Mazda CX-70 in order to understand all of the differences - even to the point of digging up a Mazda CX90.

    I'm just fascinated, from a marketing standpoint, as to why the decision was to make a new nameplate for this rather than just making the CX-90 available in a two row configuration and telling people about it.

  • @elspell44

    I feel like the automotive industry as a whole is trying to hard to fill gaps that don't really exist. The CX-90 I really do like and it gets Mazda some well deserved attention, but to make this CX-70 seems so unnecessary, just make a 2 Row option for the CX-90. The development cost, marketing, crash testing, licensing, etc, are expensive. Doing all that to basically make a carbon copy for a company we all know has been on a down turn for many years feels a tad irresponsible. But I wish Mazda much success, they make good cars if people would just look past the badge.

      Lmfao crash testing? It's the same platform. Also if they just called it a 2 row cx 90 they still have to do crash testing regardless

    • @elspell44
      @elspell44 4 місяці тому +2

      @@smok3sho587 The NHTSA does not require every variation of a vehicle to be tested, they are only required to be crash tested internally and also meet IIHS safety standards but the NHTSA will make it a public rating on their scale. And same platform doesn't matter, my Cadillac and the Camaro are both on the GM Alpha platform, you think they would try to skirt testing by saying they are technically the same underneath so it's fine?

      I have been itching to buy a new car since the one I have is going on 16 years... I wanted to upgrade from a 4 door sedan to a small medium SUV and the CX-70 stands out from the rest in the segment (at least for me). On one hand it's awesome that we get the same dimensions from the 90, but at the same time I was hoping for something a little bit smaller. Guess I'll have to see it in person. Bit so far I'm liking it. And if it's prices around 40-45k, I'll take it😂

      Don't insult Mazda like that! BMWs recent designs are so busy, aiming to be "eye-catching" rather than timeless, clean, good proportions.
      I agree it has older BMW vibes though. If only this had the B58 and ZF8, which is a far better powertrain.

    I'm sure it'll be a great success when people see the massive cargo space behind the rear row (because people for some reason find folding the rear seats abhorrent regardless of if the third row is used). X5 ditched the 3rd row option without issue.
    But given the large range of Mazdas' powertrains and the CX-90 pricing well both against economy and premium marks, if the wheelbase remains the same as the CX-90 then there is a missed opportunity to compete and outperform in the spacious 2 row SUV segment. The Passport/RDX/ XT5/ X5 (40i)/ Q5& SQ5/ VW Atlas CS/ Grand Cherokee (standard length) area, given pricing and power.
    Mazda may still try to market it against those 2-rows, and a discount of $2-3k from the CX-90 would likely be enough to keep it competitive. But even with Mazdas' sporty driving it will be hard to really argue that the driving and maneuverability matches the competition on such a long wheelbase.

  • @leoclement3801
    @leoclement3801 4 місяці тому +1

    Hahaha ..... remember a couple of years ago when Mazda announced that the CX-70 *"will not"* replace the CX-5?
    Back when everyone kept complaining about how silly it was for Mazda to keep the CX-5 alive, instead of simply replacing it with the upcoming CX-70?
    *Well folks, now we finally know why!* .... hahaha .... I mean come on Mazda, the CX-70 is simply a two-row CX-90, full stop!
    Hell, they didn't even bother removing the 3'rd row cup holders (lol). Gee, I wonder why nobody ever complained about why the CX-90 didn't replace the CX-5? Gimme a break! (lol). And so now we know EXACTLY why the CX-5 will be around for a very long time. After all, why wouldn't it? It has always been Mazda's best selling vehicle, Mazda's bread & butter!
    Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Mazda, which is why I ordered a new 2023 CX-5 Grand Touring from my Mazda Canada dealer last April (red exterior, white leather interior). I received it in early July and I absolutely love it! Before ordering it, I test-drove the Tucson, the Sportage, the Tiguan, the Outlander, the CRV and the Rav4. In my opinion, the CX-5 easily came out on top. I *know* that I made the right choice, no doubt about it!
    With that said ----> like a lot of other folks, I seriously considered waiting for the CX-70 to be release because, "like everyone else in North America", I was led to believe that it would be very similar to the European "CX-60", and so somewhere in between the CX-50 and the CX-90. Man am I ever glad that I didn't wait. What a waste of time that would've been!
    Based on a gazillion "previous" UA-cam vids about the *"upcoming"* CX70, it's quite obvious that *"nobody"* saw this coming! The CX-70 is a total surprise and a massive disappointment.
    So I say to Mazda ...."I'm pretty sure that you're about to *"learn"* very quickly what North Americans think of your CX-70"!

  • @mpv9137
    @mpv9137 4 місяці тому +10

    CX-70 = CX-90 - 3rd row = disappointment. Anyone with a CX-90 essentially owns a CX-70 when the seats are folded down? Why the BIG reveal?

  • @iscmgdr
    @iscmgdr 4 місяці тому +4

    I would also like the CX-70 to have bigger price delta from the CX-90, but I think Mazda is going to follow the trend from all other manufacturers and price this quite close to the 3 row option. VW, Hyundai and Kia are doing that, at least where I live. The way they are priced in my country, there's a gap between the CX-50 and CX-90, with the former at around $40,000 USD with currency conversion and taxes, and the latter at around $59,000 USD. We only get 1 trim of each, and it's almost the top one with the better engine. Hopefully the CX-70 is somewhere around $50,000 USD, but we'll see.

      Why can't the manufacturers set the specs in stone right at launch?

    • @hskrgrad
      @hskrgrad 4 місяці тому +1

      I think they monitor reactions at launch and then that influences how they will price trims. If they are indeed monitoring this launch I think they are going to see unless they drop price several thousand dollars vs the CX-90 there isn’t going to be as big of a market demand as they had hoped. Most people are just going to say I will pay a grand more to have the flexibility of a third row and just keep it folded down for storage until I need it. There is not a big market for what they did here.

    Dear Mazda, If you expect people to buy your top trim versions of the CX-90 and CX-70 on either 3.3 inline six or PHEV, you can’t leave the lower trim and cladding around the wheels unfinished. They need to be painted body color or the cars look like a cheap rental car spec. You paint them on the Canadian spec cars, why short us in the USA? I refuse to pay $60,000 for a top trim car that looks like the base model. I’m sure I’m not alone on this.

    I like Mazda moving up market BUT the CX90 is great in its class but it's not nearly quiet enough to be in the same plane as a BMW or even Acura. Great first attempt, things look great, are build well but materials need to come up a little more and it needs to be a little quieter.

It's only superficially different from the CX-90, and it misses the heart of the smaller premium two-row CUV market by a mile. At 200"+ inches long the CX-70 is more than a foot longer (and hundreds of pounds heavier) than some of its most formidable competition, yet I don't get the appeal of all that added size and weight. Well said and Observed. This CX-70 w/o the 3rd row is equal to the CX-90 with the 3rd Row down?? WTH Mazda?? They should have brought the CX-60 (in Eurpoe and Australia) to the US. I have a 22 MDX , and a 2019 MDX before that - I never used the 3rd Row in either (and a Infiniti 2016 QX-60 B4 that). I'm a 72 yo retired guy, kids are gone and married with children. I see this from the side of the enthusiast but I also see this from the side of the OEM. You have to look at these as an alternative to showing the car at an auto show. There, you get the same lack of information and it is really about 'premiering' the vehicle. I prefer this to an auto show any day because I get one on one time with the car and shoot at a realistic pace without a scrum. As you can see, I, too, am frustrated without details which is the reason I insert context to provide more insight. Hope it helps.

    There is, IMHO, no way Mazda can cut $15k of content (if you want the top trim of the CX-70 to top out in the high $40k range.) I hope it is true but I'm highly dubious. Since I'm not seeing the super-fancy interior with the hang-stitching (or whatever it is called) and the real wood trim, and of course no 3rd row, I could see $5k of content reduction. But I don't know much about the cost of the fancy interior bits and/or the cost of the 3rd row itself. Now, if I was dreaming, I'd put this in a sedan or hey, dream big, a wagon. Now *that* would be super-cool.

    Perhaps it IS more apparent in person, but if Mazda changed the shape/external dimensions of the CX-90, even in the liftgate area, it is AT BEST MINUTE and near imperceptible. CX70 looks the same size and other than removing the 3rd row, it's belts and mounts, the same curb weight.
    A 'destigmatized' (not a 3-row people hauler) version of the earlier model. Little more.

      2.) Mazda likes doing these fancy houses for reveals. Lovely to look at in the finished product but hell to shoot at. Why? Noise. This one was particularly bad because the next door neighbor was having a massive remodel done and we had to shoot in between nail guns and machines going the entire time. All that to say, they brought the Cosmo from the basement of the Irvine design studio to 'stage' in front of the garage. NO ONE else used it. Mazda made everyone believe that they were going to offer a widebody version of the CX60 for the US market. Instead we get the same vehicle minus the third row. I seriously planned to trade for this when it came out, but I don’t need anything this big. Why not at least a Coupe version like what VW/Audi did with the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport or the Audi Q7/Q8. Even that would have been an improvement over this. Did I really need a 3 Row SUV, at 72 YO, No. But I liked the redesign, the room, the comfort & the ride/handling of the MDX. I was hoping that Mazda was going to produce a new CX-70 in the US as the exact CX-60 in other parts of the world. A Bit smaller, a striking good looker, less heft, and better MPGs. And No Touchscreen! That's the major gripe I have with the Acura, its TTIP Touchpad based InfoT. system. Mazda (and Acura for that matter) should have provided BOTH - a touchscreen capability and either the Dial in the Mazda or the Touchpad in the Acura. This is now a Pass for my future consideration.

      I think people are less so confused and more so disappointed. There is a big group of people that wanted the styling and power train of the new CX-90 but in a slightly smaller package with a more sporty feel. Even though early reports suggested it would be a two row CX-90 people had hoped for more of a change. Me personally I expected (or hoped for) a very similar front half to accommodate the same power train and front cabin experience but with a slightly shorter wheel base and smaller back end to change the proportions. The disappointment is that they had an opportunity in bringing an all new model to market to fit a different niche and appeal to a different set of buyers but they decided to literally rebadge the 90 with one less row of seats. So instead of giving potential buyers a new model to choose from they basically said here we can take the third row out for you, enjoy.
