This is wrong.. the CX50 is built at the Mazda Toyota plant which is a joint venture between the two companies, but just in terms of reducing risk and capital expenses.
The CX50 uses Mazda chassis, powertrain, design and components.
This car is definitely NOT a reskinned Corolla Cross. Same factory but totally different production lines and components. Shocking error for Motoman to make

My apologies . . . totally see the confusion I have caused in this episode. The goal was to hit the manufacturing JV hard - probably too hard - with an eye towards answering the question of reliability of a car with a badge that is not Toyota. My bad in trying to tie how similar they are in market position and execution.

@@MotoManTV Confusion? You said straight up in the video that it is built on the Corolla Cross platform. Unless every other source I’ve seen is wrong, it is not, and is instead on the Mazda 3 / CX-30 platform. My problem with the Mazda torsion beam rear suspension on the Mazda 3, CX-30, and CX-50 is the "kick in the back" that happens when they go over speed bumps. I would chose the CX-5 over the CX-50 because the CX-5's independent rear suspension doesn't beat up my back like the torsion beam suspension does. I'm a person with a chronic back problem, so the torsion beam "jolt to the back" is a deal breaker.

I disagree with MotoMan that the CX-70 will be a replacement for the CX-5. Mazda has said the CX-70 will be the same car as the CX-90 minus the third row. That means the CX-70 will be bigger than the CX-50, never mind the CX-5. I was hoping the CX-70 would be more akin to the European Mazda CX-60, but that seems not to be. I'd like to stay with Mazda in the future and the CX-5 Signature is perfect for me, I hope it sticks around and merely gets improvements instead of being discontinued.

Funny... I have a vanilla 2023 CX-50 Turbo and paid $37K. It's a good transportation "appliance", with surprisingly good handling & acceleration. My other vehicle is a 2017 Chevy Colorado with 105K miles, so the steering difference between the two is night-and-day (maybe, obviously). The CX-50 seems to be a bit darty on the highway, but drives like a Mazda on windy roads. With the rear seats folded I can put my (58cm) bicycle in the back with both wheels on and still have room for bags, shoes, helmet, etc.. With 16K miles on it, it gets about 26mpg on the highway, and runs very well on either regular or premium - although, the performance difference between the two grades of fuel is noticeable. It's taken me on two long trips of 500+ miles each way, and I find it acceptably comfortable - so long as I'm not on a concrete roadway with robust expansion joints. I bought this as an interim/temporary vehicle, but I just may keep it for a while. BTW... ZERO problems (knock on wood) with my Colorado... Did I just jinx myself?

But, with where cars are priced at nowadays, this seems to be right where it should be based on the market. Higher priced than a Nissan/Toyota but less than a comparable Audi/Mercedes.

I'm trying to make that decision. Looking to replace my 2017 Forester turbo. 137k miles and has needed about $10k in service with another $2k pending. I think I'm done with Subaru. Outback is bigger and softer, but I'm not impressed with reliability. Looking at CX-50 or RAV-4. If the hybrid was out, I'd just go with the Mazda.

You would buy the Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid for much better gas mileage, the Mazda CX-30 for a lower price, the CX-5 for a slightly lower price, the CX-50 for its firmer steering feel, or the Maverick for a truck bed. Or the Hyundai Santa Cruz truck for more money, just do not get the top trim with an unreliable dual clutch transmission. The Honda hybrids are another good choice for how they drive, the Civic, Accord, and CR-V; however they are too new to know anything about reliability now.

It's not bad, but it's just not worth the asking price, even in base trim. I like Mazda the brand, but they need to address reliability issues. No way are we keeping the CX9 past the lease end.

I had a 2016 CX-5 GT. Wonderful SUV. Didn't fit rear facing car seats with my wife & I's height... plus, I prefer cars, so I landed back in an Accord Hybrid. In the past year, to replace an older Accord (wife's car) I test drove a couple CX-5s and three CX-50s... I still liked both and I do agree, it seems the extra wheelbase helped the CX-50's ride a tad.
    BUT...
Having a family and looking for space... My Accord's trunk seemed to have more cargo space if you don't count the area above the seatback in the CX-50.
For a similar price point, we purchased an Odyssey EX-L. Loads more space, drives reasonably well, and similar fuel economy figures from an 3.5L V6 with 10-speed auto. Yes, I'll confess that Mazda's 6-speed is a better box than Honda's 10-speed (if you have to have a slushbox, and either vehicle - you do) and the Mazda handles better...But if the primary objective is family hauling, the minivan is hard to beat for the money.
Full disclosure - never try to make one vehicle do it all. I've got a garage of three. Miata for fun, Accord Hybrid for daily driver/fuel economy (and still fairly fun), and the Odyssey for Family/Stuff hauling and comfort. Each does it's intended purpose excellent and doesn't try to be all the things at the same time.

Hmmm...kinda scratching my head with this assessment. I just ordered a 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo PremiumPlus (Zircon sand and terracotta interior). After test driving the CX-50 twice, Toyota, and a BMW...my thinking this CX-50 at $45K has much more "bang for the buck" and looks better. If you want to save some $, opt for the lower trim level. If you wanna go all out like I am...this CX-50 is like a fancy Swiss Army Knife slicing through the alps with plenty of torque and "zoom-zoom" driving dynamics.

Good assessment. As stated, there are other, bigger options at the same price point, however you indeed get less content. I gave the Telluride example as something bigger but forgot to add badge example: GLC 300. The base price of that is about the fully loaded price of this.

Mazda has come a long way in the last decade & builds better ICE vehicles than either Toyota or Honda these days IMO. Also, the CX-50 is pure Mazda & a derivative variant of the CX-30 platform, NOT the Corolla Cross or any other Toyota. Future Mazda hybrids, however, will be using Toyota hybrid technologies/systems & such, since they are in a close partnership with each other.

That mileage is ridiculous, you're not driving an MX-5, sure its fun to zoom zoom, but drive like a non-New Yorker....also, this is a reason to NOT get the turbo, we have the NA premium trim and 've never felt a need for more power, even driving the mountains in Colorado, we routinely hit mid 30s mpg, our combined average at >5000 miles is 31 mpg. We drove this and CX-5 back to back, CX-50 is better in corners as its a bit wider and lower, and a bit stiffer due to suspension differences, we knew immediately we preferred the CX-50

These two most definitely don't share a platform. Economy of scale production makes sense in this case because the CX-50 is for North America only and still a relative rarity on the road. By styling it to accommodate mild off road use they cheapened the interior and made it blander looking than current Mazdas. Fifty lashes with a wet noodle for the author.

No, the Mazda CX-50 is not based on the Toyota Corolla Cross. The CX-50 is based on the Mazda 3/CX-30 platform and does not share any parts with the Corolla Cross. However, the two vehicles are both produced at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA plant in Huntsville, Alabama, which began production in January 2022.
The CX 50 is actually ten inches longer than the Corolla Cross and also has a seven inch longer wheelbase. I fact checked this video's claim while watching it and found it to be wrong so I ended the video early. Please get your facts straight before you start preaching as though it's gospel.

From what I've seen Toyota's interiors are HORRIBLE and cheap! Mazda seems to have hired some decent people to design theirs. The biggest reason I have for NOT buying a Mazda CX50 is that I see to many of them on the road! They are EVERYWHERE! But I guess that means they are pretty good LOL! I think I'm gonna buy one but we'll see after my test drive and I see if the colors look as good in person as they do online! Thanks for the review!
