Farm fresh goat milk is a completely different food than the grocery store stuff!
I totally get it I was sitting outside on my back deck today eating lunch and reading a book thinking wow what a gorgeous day and thanked the Lord. I've had some hard health issues over the last 15 months so every day I'm thankful for this day the Lord has made let us be glad I'm rejoice in it. Another great video thanks Shayla
Love being here and watching all your crafting creativity raw family and momma life. Your homesteading journey I have been following and just so enjoy it all for a while now.
Thank you so much! God Bless you, Friend!! Your comments always are so uplifting. Thank you!
I stir in a 1/2 c of powdered milk when heating the milk to get a thicker consistency! Also - you can fill mason jars with the culturing yogurt & set inside a crock pot with about 2-3 inches of water on the warm setting. OR if you have a gas stove, fill the jars & put in the oven with the pilot light on. Keeps it just warm enough to do the trick.
Ooh! I’m really interested in watching this (though I’m firmly in the ‘burbs and keeping goats is nowhere in my future. 😂)! I also had to chuckle at the byline about goats milk products tasting “goaty”. I used to LOVE goats milk cheese, and then after having my son 7 years ago I’ve been super sensitive to the taste of goat and lamb products (it was a pregnancy thing that has decided to stay for good. So sad). 😢 I wish it wasn’t so, as I’m also sensitive to cow’s milk. (Basically I can’t win! 😂) But that’s interesting that the goaty flavor can be due to handling and age; all the goats milk products I’ve had are commercially made, so that might be part of my problem…
I’ve had goats for 3 years now and had no idea how to start with the milk I’ve made mozzarella and it was a flop. It was that goaty flavor, I kinda gave up. so my pigs have gotten the milk for the past few years. I’m so glad you posted this ❤️ thank you!
Hello Jasmine! Definitely look into mineral imbalances! If you contact your vet they can be a major help in this area. It's a good idea to work with a local vet as they will be able to tell you what land in your area is deficient in, and therefore what the animals that graze the area's around you are deficient in. They can also guide you with dosages as this is important. Selenium and copper can be toxic if given in too high of doses, so this is where the vet can be of great assistance.
also - having very high quality filters for your milk funnel with take out alot of that flavor. Same for cow's milk. Had a friend that would just strain thru cheesecloth & the milk tasted like the barn! I would not drink it. cooling it fast too, will improve dairy's flavor (& I have found that milk stored in a stainless steel REAL milk can, rather than a glass jar, improves the flavor). If there is even one stray hair, piece of straw or fleck of dirt the whole thing will take on a bad flavor.
Amen! Ty so very much.
We do have tillamook here in the Midwest, it’s just more expensive than most other brands
Hi! Check out the ingredients in the Tillamook cheese cus they recently changed from the natural rennet to a synthetic one. We discussed this on a recent Doug and Stacy vid. Most of us had no idea. Many called the company about it ….not sure what’s up next. Just an fyi in case u didn’t know! Thank u dear!
Is something wrong with the synthetic one?
So it’s genetically engineered. I found the info on spruceeats. I hate telling u this but u put so much time into ur work, I just wanted u to know they started doing this for the vegetarians, they don’t want the animal rennet. Well that’s a problem for us who are trying to eat right.
have you tried the cheese sauce with freshly shredded cheese? Pre shredded has a powder coating to prevent it from clumping so I wasn’t sure if that impacts the results if you don’t have the added powder. We typically buy Tillamook cheese in a big block at Costco and shred it ourselves.
Always so fun to see your goats and I’m excited for the Whey cookbook - I have so much whey and didn’t know what all to do with it! Thanks for sharing about that 😊
Lucy, that is a really good question! I don't know. I'm wondering if maybe you might need to let it cool a little more first. I'll have to experiment with that!
You are welcome, btw! Thank you for watching!
So excited for the goat cheese recipe! You’re making me want to give it a try! Thank you!!! Lovely video, very helpful!
You are so welcome!
One day I would love a cow!
I love goat cheese but have never had goat's milk to drink or put into recipes! I am curious as to how those would come out. It was so much fun to watch you making these!! Now I want to eat it all!!
It's so good!
I can relate a lot to your statements about thermometers! I tried so many, all different kinds, even thought about trying a construction one but read they are riddled with inaccuracy as well and then finally decided I should try to invest in a more expensive one. I got the 'OXO Good Grips Thermocouple Thermometer, Digital' off of Amazon. It was wayy more than I would have wanted to spend on a thermometer (100$ at the time, though I see it is on sale for a little less than 70$ now). The description claims it is within 0.9 degrees accuracy and it has performed great for me.. Hoping I don't ever have to buy another one! I enjoyed the video, made me want goats even more! Hope you and your family are doing well!
Thank you HappyFamily! I will look at that thermometer. That is a lot of money, but I have wasted at least that much in bad thermometers and overcooked food so I'm desperate 😅 😭!
Yes, the family is well!
You should try one of those "candy making" thermometers that is long and attaches to the edge of your pot. They seem to be pretty accurate and its nice not having to hold a thermometer while stiring.
Okay, I will! Thank you!
I've tried several fruits for flavor bit never tried honey. I must try this. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy your videos. Packed full of information. Uplifting and just what I needed today.
Where did you get your apron? I love it! I've been looking for a good kitchen/garden apron for a while now.
I regularly buy Tilamook at Costco in MN!
Love these ideas! We have a Jersey milk cow and I am always up for inspiration and ideas for dairy products! I didn't see a recipe for the frozen yogurt--do you have one that you could share?
Alright maybe I understand....you make the yogurt and strain it, add in the honey and vanilla, and then put it in your ice cream maker and it is good to go?
Hello! Yes, that is right! You can do this without straining the yogurt too though if you want. Straining it just makes it a little more luxurious and creamy!
" I kid you not ", says Shayla🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 No pun intended❤
🤣
How long is whey good for?
I'm not entirely sure, but a couple weeks at least!
