- Dehooking tools are useful devices for catch-and-release fishing. In this video, Florida Sea Grant Agent Bryan Fluech demonstrates how to use a dehooking tool to release a fish while maximizing the fish's chance for survival. I have watched over a dozen of these dehooking demonstrations and yours is the best one! Great job! Now I know which one to buy!
great vid, thanks for the rubber fish demo, now I finally know how to use one!!!
this was a good find. i have been struggling taking hook out. thank you.....
Appreciate the effort with the rubber fish
Thanks cap. I think I got this now.
awesome video. ty
good video!
i got a ccatfish flipper yesterday and i dont know how the hell im suppose it. thats why im here so thanks for this FSG i needed to know how the hell i use the flipper
I would like order a few rubber fish like the one in the video for catch & release educational/training purposes. Where can you order them? Thanks!
Great, but I use circle hooks and damn near always hook the fish deep in its mouth (don't ask me how). I used to be able to dehook a fish caught this way quickly when I was using j-hooks or custards, but these damn circle hooks are nearly impossible to get out with this tool on a fish hooked deep with a circle hook (without seriously damaging the poor thing). What is your technique for dehooking a fish caught this way with a circle hook?
There’s several videos on UA-cam showing how. One has you carefully coming from the Gill section (without damage) and it was interesting.

Certainly, please credit Bryan Fluech, Florida Sea Grant. Tight lines!
What about gut hooked back in the throat? It won't work.
does it work with circle hooks?
yes, dehooking devices also work with circle hooks!
will this work on a deep gut hook?
The fish is dead at that point
Even if it is a shark, the method will be the same. The advantage of using a long-handed dehooking tool like the one shown in the video is that it keeps your hands away from the fish's mouth regardless if it's a mangrove snapper (like in the video) or a large fish like a shark. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to contact me at fluech@ufl.edu. Tight lines!
So after you snatch it's lip off, is it able to recover or just live long enough to be another fish's dinner?
Where can I buy this tool

Good, now I can dehook fish without touching them!
How to use a fish losing tool
What about if I was shark fishing on the beach and tried to de hook a shark?
It works
I never go fishing unless my goal is to catch a handful of fish to take home with me to cook.
It's more cruel to do the catch and release because sometimes the fish can die after you hook it and release it.
Only catch enough for the day's/1 week meal, not anymore than that.
As if catch and release wasn't pointless enough already. What's next? Dehooking a fish before even reeling it in?
Catch and release is pointless? What about catching fish that are out of season?
