This is not an April fools day video… it’s a very real running shoe here in Taiwan. To be totally honest… I don’t even think of the fact it is April 1st tomorrow… I was more focused on Easter… knowing the interest in this video would be low… 🤙🏻
5min in, I was looking at the date... fascinating, Cheers
I live in Malaysia and I can confirm that this particular shoe is very famous around here and yes, it's called Y-Sandal. I have two of these but different model, which is the one with heelcup. I usually use this for LSD or recovery run or just for casual walk. The EVA material throughout the shoe is dense enough to provide supple cushioning and support, not too squishy but good for miles, yes it lasts DAMN LONG MILEAGE as long as you use fingersocks. If you wish to have this, I suggest you go down 1 to 2 size. e.g; My Nike sizing is EU42 and my YSandal is EU39 for tight-fit, EU40 for roomy-fit.
Interesting. In the Gen 2 model I went TTS but in the Gen 3 I went up a full size to get the same fit. They changed the sizing between generations.
For a one piece EVA sandal… they do last a long time… but as with all flip flops… the thing eventually is what gives out.
I wear mine mostly for casual walking, around the house OR if I’m battling very bad blisters in the summer weather…
@@SagasuRunning Good to know that! Looking forward to their 3rd gen 👍🏻
The ones I’m showing in the video are all Gen 3… so the mold is similar (I have had Gen 2s as well) and I can’t tell a difference besides the sizing…
Amazing, in Venezuela wa have something similar called alpargatas, that are hand Made we have a Racing model to, that alpargata were quite light and very popular in the 70s and 80s were used for very fast elites, we have one runner that ran 2'18 marathon in them.
I had to Google those… but about 10 years ago in the USA a similar style l, popularized by “Tom’s Sandals” was popular for running in some areas as well as the social media thing to run a “marathon” in instead of Crocs…
2’18 in those though…. I mean… that’s impressive.
Better than anyone (I’m aware of) has done in huarache sandals…
I live in Viet Nam and we have a lot of runners running ultramarathons in these
Good to know. I figured they were popular there too. Local conditions are even more extreme there than here in Taiwan.
I just returned from a trip to Taiwan a week ago, and only wish I knew about these earlier. My kind of souvenir!
Oh man… bummer. A reason to come back!
There is a guy here that only runs in those running "sandals" . like barefoot, not like these slippers.
Since I do work in a performence diagnostic centre with orthopaedic manufracturing and also study healthcare administration (dual study, a german model) it is out of my mind how he does it.
Commonly said barefoot, sandals etc. are good if your transversal and longitual arch is in tact. Means, you got splay feet, flat feet etc. and then such shoes are actually a big no no,
And there I think come such Slippers as a really cool shoe for people who want a "free" feeling without destroying their feet completly. And also want to train their running form in a natural way.
I just need them... now... gonna search, now... alone for the logo itself I need them, thats so hilariously cute.. If I look on the website especially the ones with the little heelcup seem interesting to me. They also seem rather cheap. When I think about Hoka who wants 80bucks and more for such kind of shoes.
But I have the feeling that they dont ship ...
thank you
I come from barefoot running many years ago… and have very strong and developed arches. I also running proper “barefoot” sandals (I have a video on Luna Sandals from last year on the channel).
But these Taiwan marathon slippers are anything but… lots of arch and foot support. It is also why they are so popular here, they they are so supportive and comfortable for casual wear.
I’m not sure Taiwan will ship to you… but I bet Malaysia is Shopee will…
@@SagasuRunning My feet are a gigantic mess, splay feet from standing 7-9h per day with no break, low arch, hallux valgus (genetical), so barefoot was out of topic for me very fast.
I do foot gymnastic now and it helped to destress my beginning metatarsalgia.
So these shoes could be a funny training tool for me, especially for the upcoming summer 🤗
But ye I already see... no shipping to the EU :/
Gonna search in China or Malaysia thanks.
@Chungdol I have Hallux Limitus… which is something I like flexible shoes to help me keep up my limited range of motion (though lately that hasn’t been working as well).
Shipping to the EU… that I have no idea. Good luck there!
@@SagasuRunning Seems impossible sadly, since there are also not on Aliexpress. I contacted them via Insta, lets see there.
Fascinating.
In Abidjan I have noticed quite a few young people out running in the cheapest imaginable flip flops and jellies. Often the jellies are obviously damaged. They are usually wearing an old le foot jersey (soccer). I assume the running is tangential to dreams of football glory.
On the other hand a lot of young men do manage to own a prized pair of football boots that they would never ever wear off the pitch.
The knock-offs I mentioned are VERY popular with the same crowd here… super cheap and you can save your “real shoes” for the Bball court (basketball is way more popular than soccer here). Or the super local/old school guys just live in these 24/7 and will jog around the parks in them. The jellies you mentioned are similar.
It’s fascinating how some things are universal.
In Malaysia we call this Y sandals. And it has lots of fans here. Quite comfy i assume. I also seen some runners run in ultra in this.
Yup, yup… Y Sandals, the company, is the main importer of this brand from Taiwan as well. Plenty of ultra runners run in them here too… including Wei-Ming Lo who has completed the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race multiple times in this sandal.
Was in Taipei in Nov and saw lots of runners in sandles running. Thought it was alot of them 20%+ runners in them as well. Looks pretty comfortable as well.
It’s quite remarkable that it’s consistently 20% or more you see in these anywhere in Taiwan. It’s even more down south. When run in Tainan I’d say it’s closer to 40% of runners I see in these sandals, especially in group training or weekends.
@@SagasuRunning yes and I was tempted to try them as well, though didn't have time to go find them. Will try to look for them the next time around.
Well I didn't know I wanted one of these but now I do
They are definitely unique. There are a few places out of LA that do import them. I also think they can be found out of Vancouver on Canada.
I run in this Y Sandals for a FM event and got sub 4. Very light and they make my heart rate down like ~ 10 heart beat
Enjoy them… they are alot of fun to run in.
Haha 😂cant believe you stayed so serious the entire time. Nothing like starting the day wondering about the Y of thongs. Cant determine if its a legit review or april 1st joke. Either way great job!
Haha. I didn’t even realize it’s April 1st. This is very serious… these are very legit running shoes here in Taiwan (and all over SE Asia). To be fair, only Americans really call them “flip-flops”…most of the rest of the world calls them “thongs”. The “y” is a good thong is important for lockdown for sure…
Now I wanna try them, do u need toe-socks for there or no socks at all?
They work with either. If you feet aren’t conditioned to them toe socks are the way to go. I’d say half the people I see running in these are in toe socks. Injinji socks are quite popular (I run in them often with shoes too) as well as the brand makes a tabi (two toe) style sock specifically for their sandals.
any news on the the carbon plated version 🤞
Hahaha… I’m honestly kind of expecting one. Given how off the wall the brand is sometimes I wouldn’t put it past them.
I remember running in 河濱公園 in a city in Taipei. I’ve seen some Taiwanese runners wear slippers and run in fast speed efficiently. I can’t keep up with them. I’m not sure if they’re wearing this particular brand. 😮
There are so many knock-offs out there it’s hard to tell… but this is the original.
They should make a super snappy carbon plated version of this. Would probably be kind of funny to run in😂😂
I don’t put it past this company… in fact I’d say it’s pretty likely… I’ll keep and eye out for them.
As a serious runner (check out that channel if you don't know it) I can't even consider this for running. But make it 39.5 mm of Peba, throw a carbon plate in it and sell it for 280 bucks and I'm in! At least if you can confirm that the toebox is breathable enough for raceday.
But seriously, I occasionally see people running marathons in barefoot running shoes or even literally barefoot, compared to that 30 mm of EVA must feel max cushion.
I know the channel... I think you captured it well. This sandal is probably the most anit-barefoot running sandal one could find. Even a gas stations pair of cheap flip-flops will be more barefoot than these.
This shoes are definitely going to become Adios-Vapourfly killers. Like this serious April topics. )
Hahaha.
We also wear these kind of slippers in Pakistan. Soft and comfortable
I didn’t know that. Interesting.
It makes me a little bit giddy knowing that some relatively small company is able to come along with a $20 sandal and basically hold an entire market segment away from Nike and the other big sportswear powerhouses
Collectively all of SE Asia is a HUGE market… you’d think one of the big brands would… 🤷🏼♂️
Ive heard of barefoot running and those feet shaped shoes with the toes running
Today i learned that people run in sandals
I also have a video about Luna Sandals, a true barefoot running sandal, on this channel. Sandal running is quite common all over the world actually.
B&M Caimen = Baby & Mother Caimen?
That is the most likely, but the ordering is backwards from the Chinese name… which usually doesn’t happen.
… and the child would NEVER come before the parent in Chinese culture for a name like this either.
I was gonna make a lenghty comment but then I thought, “wait, it’s 31st March here in Malaysia, is this an April Fool’s Day joke?”😂 If it is, hats off to you, man! Just imagine somebody in the US thinks, “mmm marathon event but only using flip flops?”🤭
Nope… not an April fools joke… at all. This is a legit running shoe here in Taiwan.
@@SagasuRunning No way! That’s crazy! Nevertheless this reminds me of those pricey Hoka sandals. I might get this one instead in light of you mentioned of the price.
These are SOOOOOOOOO much better and more useful that those Hoka monstrosities. 😂
Why do u live in Taiwan and not US ?
My wife is Taiwanese and we travel frequently as digital nomads… Taiwan is very central to many of the other places we tend to go often.
@@SagasuRunning
Other words: you are living the dream 😁
@@SagasuRunningI love Taiwan. You can get food literally any hour of the day. Their food vendors in night markets are mind boggling! We don’t get that luxury of getting food after 10pm here in the US. Even their 7-11, Pizza Hut and dominos have so many varieties compared to the US counterpart.
I am from Singapore and I love these slippers. You can run in them and straight away shower with them as well. We wear 5 toes socks. Super comfy but it does attract attentions.
Exact same use case here in Taiwan... I see it all of the time.
Looks like my crocs flipflop
Similar idea… much better EVA foam…
If they could make the slipper out of pebex based foam, it’d be a game changer.
It wouldn’t withstand the forces for the “Y” holding onto the foots it would shear quickly. They could change the design from a one piece mold… but they it’s a different product.
The “lightweight” one I showed in this video, the one I said was too soft for me to run in, is quite soft and bouncy… it’s still EVA… but it does show you what a soft PEBA foam could feel like.
@@SagasuRunning I’m sure pebex can come in different densities.
Definitely… but the material shears very easily… don’t still wouldn’t work in this one piece mold design.
母子 boshi= B M=mother.....my best guess
That’s what my wife thought too…. But she is unsure as the language isn’t hire correct… it would make sense for this and me literal to the Chinese…
B+M= Baby & Mother. Guess ;)
That is mine too… though the ordering differs from the Chinese name, which usually wouldn’t happen. 🤷🏼♂️
@@SagasuRunning Maybe it's the sound of it, M+B sounds terrible and difficult to pronounce.
@yiann1sk Agree as well… this is what my wife and I have been thinking… but often with Taiwanese names for things, especially company names, logic doesn’t apply. 😂
Also the child would NEVER come before the parent in Chinese culture for a name like this either.
@@SagasuRunning The land of the Cute hahah. I have a huge desire now to pick a pair of these plus the recovery ones from Tao Bao. Or take a plane to Kaohsiung and stay a few days there too.
Hahaha… these are even MORE popular down south than they are up here in Taipei… by a lot .
